Where to begin with this fascinating book? As someone who was captivated by space travel as a child when I was younger (my father woke me up to watch the moon landing), I found it completely absorbing. Readers are introduced to the Red Planet and its moons, gaining an understanding of Mars’ atmosphere, climate, orbits and gravity, alongside an overview of past missions. The book then delves into the challenges of establishing a colony - such as pressurisation, extreme temperatures and radiation - and explores possible solutions grounded in science and current technological advances. There’s an exciting glimpse of what life on Mars could look like, from the development of underground cities and residential areas to transport systems and food production, and the resources needed to sustain a human settlement. Packed with diagrams, charts, drawings and facts, this is an ideal read for budding young scientists and future space explorers. Informative, imaginative and inspiring, it’s perfect for middle grade readers (9-12 years) and a must-have for any school library.
