Nathaniel Runnels isn’t a fan of life. He isn’t a fan of the news, which is a bust because he’s a reporter. He’s lost faith in journalism, in the truth, in civilization and in himself. So it’s quite the surprise when he gets swept up in a quest to save the world. Perception and reality collide as one man faces one question, would you sacrifice your humanity to save mankind?Only Human is a tale where the truth is revealed about vampires, about therians (make sure you don’t call them werewolves), about angels, about demons, the photogeni plant people and humanity as we supposedly know it. This isn’t your typical book, these aren’t your typical vampires and what has been said is fiction, may actually be truer than the history you’ve been sold.
After years of working in advertising, I figured there were better ways to write fiction. Born on August 13th, I share birthdays with Alfred Hitchcock and Fidel Castro... an interesting coincidence since mom is Cuban and I love a good story.
Truth be told, ever since I was a kid I dreamt about being an inventor, I just didn't know I'd end up doing it using words. Where some people choose to invent new products, I’ve chosen to invent worlds through words.
In college, I studied psychology for 3 years before realizing that if I finished, I'd need a psychologist for myself. Not being too enticed by the whole full circle nature of that trajectory, I switched to Marketing, Advertising... and Psychology. Seems I just couldn't let it go.
A lover of Science Fiction and Fantasy, I’ve always loved writing and connecting with people. Mind you, although I love these genres, my reading tastes are as eclectic as my musical passions. So from rock to salsa to classical music, I also read and write in a variety of genres and am just as satisfied writing a review or a poem as I am working on my next novel. My obsession with the human aspect of who we are is deeply embedded in most of my work and my first book is no exception. Only Human is the first link within the Human Cycle, a three-book exploration of humanity through fiction.
I’m currently working on several projects, consistently put out free material on the blog (jdestradawriter.blogspot.com) and I rant with zest on Twitter via @jdestradawriter. I also have and instagram account (@jdestradawriter) if you want to see what I’m getting up to or what delicious beer I may recommend pairing with the book your reading.
My favorite band is Pearl Jam, I was born in Puerto Rico, I bodyboard and to me, playing a guitar is as therapeutic as a bleeding into a notebook with my pen. So by all means, visit, say hi and connect.
I have never read a book with so many monsters and what not in it in my entire life! We have vampires, therians (werewolves) minotaur, angels both fallen and not, God, plant people, The Holy Spirit, goblins, wraiths, waters demons... oh hell, I can't remember them all! LoL
So poor ole Nathanial is a measly human that gets a visit from a dampyr named Daniel. He brings Nat into this world of everything mystical and such. Nat is commandeered to help in the quest to save the world.
Now there are so many peeps...er... things in this book I can't keep up with who all I like but some of my favorites were Daniel and a few from his vampire group named Liam and Indigo. Liam is a healer and can read minds. Indingo is just big and crazy :-)
--->EXCERPT<---
'Hit the floor.' All vampires obeyed and two mechanical banshees screamed with the arrival of Indigo and a pair of Gatling guns. Black chunks of flesh flew all over as bones broke, wings were severed and the hundred goblins faced what seemed like a thousand times their number in bullets. After a full half minute's worth of ammunition, the garden had been wiped clean of anything that wasn't vampire. "Miss me?" asked Indigo. He dropped the guns and helped his comrades get up from the floor while Liam walked alongside puffing a cigarette.
I just loved him and Liam :-)
So after this raid and such, the group of vampires and Nat board a pirate ship with all female vampires.
I loved all of the women on the boat but Captain Jane was my favorite, she got her all women crew from women that had been assaulted by men. They were turned into vampires and I think Jane did it, I was a little confused about that. Well, I was confused about a lot of things. I fell down the rabbit hole on this book :-D
Like I said, there are a lot of creatures in this book and they were so cool to meet. Well, not the evil ones. They just want to eat your face off, but I digress.
So they are all on the boat going to wherever and Nat keeps having these dreams and meet some guy named Bill in the dreams. They also encounter all kinds of creatures and Bill shows him premonition type stuff. It's sad because while they are on the ship they are attacked by demons and some of the people I liked get killed! No, just no!
There were some therians in the book I liked but can't remember their names! And some other creatures I can't remember either. --->Moral of this, take better notes when you have about a million monsters and ones that you like and don't like!
At the end of the book there is this huge battle between all of the good and evil creatures and Nat. It's funny, I always have to say and Nat since he's the only human. If you read the book you will get why it's funny when you read about the smorgasbord of creatures.
We have some fallen angels and demons in the fight along with everything else. I mean this really is a battle to save the Earth.
Even Gabriel came down to help :-) There were others there, but Gabriel talked a good bit of time with Nat after all of the stuff was over and more people..er.. things I loved were killed :-(
Other than the deaths that happened in the book, I liked it. I felt really bad for the ones that lost mates as well because they made me want to cry because they hurt so bad. DON'T JUDGE ME! I empathize with other people's pain, or monsters, or animals. ETC... I'm not really sure how Nat can come back from something like this, I mean how do you go back to the regular old world. I was thinking there was going to be a sequel, but how would you write a sequel after that battle. I guess you could have some other stuff happen in the creature world with Nat. ~Fin~
March 27 2023- It was great to dive back into the Human Cycle for notes on Book 3. Still think it's a decent book and even with its flaws, there's a lot to enjoy. - It's not every day you're able to read your own book. You'll see different reviews here though I have quite a different perspective. This isn't the first time I read my book, meaning the manuscript. It is however the first time I've read my own book in the physical version and it was quite an interesting experience. If you're expecting me to say this is the most awesome book you'll ever read, you probably don't know me that well lol. I will do my best to be as objective as possible although it's pretty hard since I did write this book.
That said, I did enjoy it as a book, not as my work, but as A work. Not as my baby, but as a story, the first installment of what will be a 3 book series.
So here's the breakdown of the story for me and how it unfolded: the first half of the book is very detail heavy and a slow burn of a read. I didn't feel the need to rush through it and that was the case until about Chapter 13... then the book picks up and it honestly gains momentum throughout most of the second half of the book. So if you're reading, I think my best recommendation is that if it's a bit slow, give it a chance. I honestly think if you give it to chapter 13 or 14, you won't be disappointed. Mind you, I'm not saying that the first half isn't good, It's just that after all the initial setup which was necessary, the story can finally take off and boy does it. Starting in a nondescript location in the US, most likely on the Eastern seaboard, the story takes you through Europe, parts of Egypt and Africa, the Middle East and Asia.
Throughout the adventure, various conceptions of vampires are broken and that's a good point to tackle: this ISN'T a vampire book. It does have vampires in it, along with Therians (never call them werewolves), demons, angels and creatures that echo Tolkien without repeating it.
The influences range from Neil Gaiman, to Tolkien, to CS Lewis, Frank Herbert, and others.
Regarding characters, my highlights are Daniel, Bill, Captain Jane and Liam... which is interesting since Nathaniel, one of the protagonists was interesting, though not as much as these others. The reason for this is that these other characters do have a more level development and come into their own in interesting ways.
Now for a perspective that only I can give as the one who wrote this book, there's a reason why I'll always love this book, even if it's uneven, at times too long, at times too wordy, at times too detailed or whatever other critique people can offer and it's this: I can see when I find my voice a writer. Right around where I tell you that the book takes off, that's where word craft ceases to be the focus and the narrative takes over. That's when the story began to write itself and I was just hanging on for the ride. To be able to read that and feel that moment when the story clicks... that is an indescribable sensation and makes me love this book even more.
As humans we are flawed by nature... and the title of this book is a reflection of a work lovingly worked on for 7 years and insisted on.
Apart from all of this, let me close with this thought and it's one of the clear cut compliments I can offer my work. At the very least, this book and the entire Human Cycle is very different. Sure it has the archetype of the hero saving the world, that aside, the development of the story, the dialogue, the characters, the locations and the twists and several surprises I think merit a read and that's me being as honest about the story as I can. This is not me plugging my book, this is me saying that I enjoyed a story, even if it was my own, and maybe, just maybe, you'll enjoy it too.
'Only Human' is a very detailed story with interesting facts and plausible history. The world building is excellent and thorough. It’s been compared to LOTR but I could see the influence of Robert Jordan.
Wannabe author turned reporter Nathaniel Runnels' life is about to change when he's abducted by a vampire named Daniel. Daniel explains that the humans are the last of the four dominant races and now there are seven offshoots of human. Nathaniel is The Chosen One (sort of).
I had some trouble with the first half because it's wordy. There is a lot of information coming at you in rapid fire form: Other species and races, wars, vampire myths vs. reality, angels and demons, other dimensions, magical stones, and female vampire pirates - Just to name a few.
Nathaniel got more believable as the book progressed (he takes being kidnapped by a vampire exceptionally well) And I really cared about him at the end. My feelings for Daniel ebbed and flowed but I also cared about him. My favorite character was "dreamy" Bill and his weird premonitions.
I think this is a hard-core fantasy fans dream book. You could really get into some heavy debates and offshoots and RPGs. If your new to fantasy it might be a bit much though.
Nathaniel is only a human. In the same way sequoias are only trees and this book is only a story. This is a very long book, and it needs to be as it turns every stereotype on its head, sets it in fire and scatters the ashes. The world is about to end, because of a man that had wanted to save it. Lucifer is giving humanity aid, god is sickened by humanity, angels don't know what to do, demons are afraid, and Time is one hell of a mother. While reading this book I spent half my time laughing, half my time gasping, and half my time pondering the ideas brought up. Yes that means I spent all my time reading this with conflicting reactions. It's a very complicated story with characters that are very easy to sympathize with. Which is extremely well done considering how alien most of the characters and concepts are to humans. This author crafted an amazing story that covers all of time and several dimensions that keeps you captivated right to the end when desperately hope he has already published a second book.
Only Human is a fantastic fantasy novel featuring vampires, werewolves, angels, demons, and many other mythological creatures. It is as expansive as Middle Earth (even if the novel takes place on planet Earth), and features locations probably not seen in your average fantasy novel: I really appreciated the parts of the book set in Ethiopia, for example. I have to appreciate the author's depth of knowledge and the level of research that went into this, as it takes so many mythological creatures and stories from across the globe and spins them into a compelling, rich and philosophically profound tapestry.
All of this serves as the perfect backdrop to a story featuring Nathaniel Runnels, who is wrenched from his ordinary life and into a quest for the salvation of the Earth.
I thoroughly enjoyed Nathaniel's relationship with Daniel, the vampire who guides him on his new path, and their journey across the globe to warn the other creatures of darkness of the encroaching doom. Nathaniel is drawn into a dizzying abyss of weird creatures, sexy vampiric women, as well as a psychological and reality-bending narrative that will leave you in awe of Estrada's imagination. The novel also takes you on a trip of familiar myths and legends from the bible and spins them into original characters, many of whom have a fun sense of humour.
I loved all the characters, especially how they speak to each other - so much fun. I particularly liked Bill, who features in some of Nathaniel's dreams, and enjoyed all the scenes he was in.
Estrada's writing is strong. Very descriptive with a powerful and dynamic use of language. His descriptions of characters, garments, settings and emotional states are great. His descriptions of action is also superb. It is a fairly long novel, but the language is fresh and vivid throughout.
The overall narrative works well and builds to a satisfying climax. Nathaniel Runnel's journey is compelling, interesting and surprising, and the vast collection of ancillary characters are strong and memorable.
JD Estrada’s Only Human is just that and so much more. Only Human is a crafty, intelligent, thought-provoking story revolving around intense characters racing toward the heart of humanity. The vampires held me captive until JD crafted multiple fascinating worlds to explore adding layer upon layer of long forgotten legends. There’s nothing I love more than to sink my teeth into a story that allows me to think about the meaning and purpose of life. With JD’s feral and touching characters, you get to explore humanity in many facets learning about times past and present questioning the purpose and balance of each. As one man’s quest for truth and understanding collide against his humanity, his fears aren’t far from your own. Well-researched, filled with tension and suspense, absorbing characters that leave you with more questions eagerly anticipating book number two. Great read!
Only Human is a high fantasy book with some science fiction swirled in there too. The main character is a human, and he get kidnapped by a vampire who enlists him in quest to save the world which may cause him to lose his humanity in the process. This is NOT - I can’t emphasize that enough - not a cliche vampire story. The scope of this world is huge and very well thought out. At the beginning I do think the author struggled a bit to lay all the groundwork for such a complex world, and at times the time travel was a bit jumbled. It’s like, the greatest strength of the book is it’s fascinating, large scope, and it’s where the book gets hung up a bit too. There are tons of monsters, there are real moments in history presented in a different type of universe which I thought was really fun. But I was definitely attached to the main character. He’s so loyal, and the ending was emotional. I’ll be getting the sequel for sure, bring it on. My full review is posted on my June 2017 monthly reading wrap up https://youtu.be/cM5VZfRSdW8?t=184
Nathaniel, human, and Daniel, vampire, unite to get all the warring races to fight the demons. This book starts slow and ends at a high gallop. I was intrigued, excited, and engaged from the beginning. It's high drama and classic battles of good versus evil will keep you thoroughly involved.
Absolutely fantastic and solid read. Just the right amount of fantasy with a real world feel. You'll find yourself identifying with several characters and you will not be able to put this book down!
Only Human is the debut novel by JD Estrada, and the first in a series. The world-building here gets five of five stars. There's a very rich imagination churning through these pages which kept me reading when otherwise I might have fallen off. I was confused and uncomfortable throughout the first third, stumbling alongside our courageous protagonist, Nathaniel, a human minority in a world full of demons, vampires, angels, therians, and a conscious plant kingdom. The story is 'high fantasy'. An about-face for this career journalist turned author. You find yourself transported to various places (some on earth), from oceans to battlefields to forests to strange labyrinthine settings where shadows come to life and god knows what else. Step aside Naked Lunch, it's time for dinner! The characters are quirky. Some are clearly dark and demonic, while others are beyond good and evil, and have settled into a murky (and endearing) gray area. A few fallen angels. And good news: the tired old morality play is mostly shoved in the trunk. Estrada emphasizes questions over answers. But there is a ripple through his universe which demands that an alliance form between disparate groups to defeat a vile enemy force, if only they can all get along for a minute.
Many of the characters enjoy deep and abiding friendships, particularly the vampires who have lived long enough to form them. I particularly enjoyed the interplay between Liam and Daniel and Nathaniel. Wonderful, cheeky dialogue. The main characters are robust. They cover a lot of ground, both physically and metaphysically. There are an awful lot of periphery characters (I had trouble keeping track of them all), and yet there is an unspoken ground always beneath them, which has something to do with mother's lemon cake. The protagonist was endearing from the start, as he blunders his way through confusing new worlds and experiences; Nathaniel is an inquisitive human with a compelling sense of loyalty and justice. From the gate he is challenged by vampires who for some odd reason have decided to let him live (they will need him). He goes through many manipulations of body, mind and feeling, all of which are very well described. I got especially hooked when nature began to manifest around him in all sorta fascinating manner, just past the halfway point. Only as the story evolved did I begin to feel attached to his struggle in having to dig down deep to survive.
Nathaniel has to contend with the chaos and everyone around him, and when he exceeds everyone's expectations, it does not go to his head. You get the sense that what he really has to contend with is himself. < sigh > Don't we all? This is where he grabbed my heart. I really liked how loyal he was, putting his life on the line for his new friends. He has a wry sense of humor, I laughed many times. By the end I was pleasantly surprised by my own attachment to this story. I guess the emotional connect crept up on me. Which is good! I look forward to more adventures. This is an impressive and ambitious start for JD Estrada, and author with a talent for world-building and dialogue, and a most expressive imagination.
In all honesty, I was surprised that this was J.D. Estrada’s first full novel. To me, it was so well versed, that it seriously hit me like a Neil Gaiman work of art. Written with great depth, a cast of characters that will never be forgotten, and the richness of philosophical explanation, it truly will captivate you from the very beginning.
People might be skeptical because it does deal with vampires and the ever interesting therians(not werewolves) but it will embark you on a unconventional and exotic path. One that will keep you enthralled, enlightened and so spellbound, that you won’t want to put it down!
I have become bewitchingly enamoured and cannot wait for the sequel J.D. Estrada!
Bring on the sequel! This is a fantasy-adventure ride into myth, religion, and horror stories mixed up with random 80's and 90's pop-culture mentions. Follow Nathaniel as he goes from being only human to becoming a hero worthy of an epic movie.
Bored with life, Nathaniel gets picked up by a vampire, but instead of drinking his blood, this vampire enlists him in a world-wide quest to save humanity and all the other creatures that turn out to exist on earth. Try to keep up and guess who all the characters are, all the song lyric mentions and bits of culture the author weaves into the story. I'm sure I could read it 4 times and still catch new stuff I missed before. I'm an instant fan!
I loved this book ! Such a great story ! Nathaniel Runnels is the reluctant hero, who after being kidnapped by an enigmatic vampire, embarks on a quest to save the world. The book is full of unforgettable characters and an exciting plot that leads you to the four corners of the world and the very edges of reality ! J.D Estrada is a new writer and someone to watch out for in the future. He writes with humour and a darkly compelling edge that leaves you wanting more. Can't wait for the next book in this brilliant series!
This was such a journey to read. I admit I was a little sceptical when I started this book as I don't read vampire books usually. But this is not a vampire book. It's an amazing fantasy read that I completely lost myself in. The characters are so engaging, I found myself willing them on and falling a little bit in love with them. The plot is fast paced and gripping. I urge the author to write the sequel, quick! Loved it!
Quick review : If you want to read a better version of American Gods, read this book. Currently reading American Gods and this is what it keeps reminding me of.
The world is lush and J.D. Estrada has done his homework. His biblical and supernatural references delve deeply to create an interconnected world of angels and demons interacting with vampires and goblins.
The globe-hopping nature of the story gives vivid descriptions to make me feel like I was traveling across Europe and the Middle East.
Nathaniel Runnels is a great point of view character, being the only human surrounded by these awesome displays of power. He grounds the story in a way which makes it relatable, interesting, and more than just epic forces clashing in the battle of good and evil.
This book is long, but it does not feel overly burdensome. The pace flows well, with alternating action and introspective moments.
There are deep questions being asked about the nature of life and love, which mold and reform across the story.
These are my opinions, but at the end of the day, I am only human.
This book made me laugh, made me cry, awoken my childhood sense of wonder, and overall provided an experience I won't forget. It succeeded in making me want to read more books in general and got me back into writing which I hadn't done seriously in over a decade.
For full disclosure, I read this book because I think the author is an excellent individual and wanted to support him, so with that, I may be kind of biased. This is also the first book review I've ever written.
I'd be hard-pressed to choose a genre this novel most fits into, but above all, it spoke to my sense of adventure. It has elements of mystery, drama, horror, action, fantasy, but adventure is what continually comes to my mind. As the reader, you join Nathaniel Runnels on a worldwide journey along with a collection of supernatural characters who may leave you asking, "How can Nathaniel hope to contend in this world when he is... Only Human."
The book isn't the next great American novel, but it hits all the notes for me required in a beautiful 'hidden gem.' Like a B-Movie that you cherish more than a shining Oscar winner, the book managed to charm me with its simultaneously roguish and sincere grin. At times I felt like the main character nearly became a "Mary Sue" in my eyes. In other occasions, the sheer improbability or absurdity of what I read risked taking me out of the story. Through it all though, the novel's enduring charm managed to keep me along for the ride until I fell in love with the adventure I had become a part.
The author touches on a variety of issues and struggles in the book and usually manages to do it in a subtle or engaging way. The author is also fond of pop culture references and various easter eggs. Some are gently woven into the tale and will only ever be known by a select few, others are dramatically obvious, and the reader can just imagine the enormous grin that must have been plastered on the authors face as he committed to including them into the story. That's okay though; they put a massive grin on my face just the same.
The book uses modern fantasy in a way that is most appealing to me. While supernatural beings and creatures of fantastic power exist, it is, for the most part, hidden and secret. Cars are still among the most practical forms of transportation and guns are just as potentially deadly in this world as our own. Magic exists, but not in the form of wizards casting spells with wands; it is something much more rare, organic and visceral.
Overall I found the writing was comfortable, I wasn't continually being assaulted with smarty person words that I needed a thesaurus attached to my hip, but the vocabulary was robust enough that my mind was able to paint vivid pictures of the people, places, and things I read.
Initially, the sheer amount of characters I was introduced to was a bit intimidating for me, especially as someone who doesn't regularly read fiction. By the end of the book, I found I enjoyed most of the characters, saw many of them stand out on their own and my biggest complaint in that regard was that each character, even the side characters hadn't been given more pages to shine.
Ultimately the books I read play like movies in my mind and inevitably I compare the books I love to the films I love. In that sense, I'd say Only Human played out in my mind like a delightful marriage of Big Trouble in Little China with Indiana Jones then enjoy with a biblical garnish and a dark fantasy dessert.
Only Human is the first in what I believe is currently intended to be a trilogy. The second book has been released, and I was just as pleased by the second. I'm confident I will enjoy the third and whatever bubbled up from the author's mind from there.
When I first found out that J.D. Estrada was going to have a book of his published I was overjoyed as I have been privileged to read a lot of his work over the years. When I was told about what the book was about, I was instantly in love - vampires! Who does not love vampires? Anyhow, once I got the book and started reading it, it became apparent to me that the book, Only Human, was not just about vampires. The book is about so much more than that! The book in composes many different entities: angels, demons, vampires, therians, photogeni plant people, as well as humans.
The book is very detailed, but has an even and smooth flow. The book begins with an abduction of a human named Nathaniel Runnels who is bored with life. He is given two choices: help or die. Naturally, anyone with those choices would choose to live, as Nathaniel did. Nathaniel plays a huge role in the book and essentially (SPOILER ALERT): becomes the hero. I will not divulge how he becomes the hero or of what he is the hero of, but just know when you are reading the book and you are trying to figure out everyone's role that Nathaniel's is big!
You will encounter some unexpected references in this book. They are by no means out of place and fit well into the story and what is currently happening. References include: Pearl Jam lyrics, other book references, and 80s and 90s pop-culture.
As I said I was drawn in when I found out the book was about vampires, but J.D.'s writing makes you NOT want to put the book down. This book is part of a series and personally, I cannot wait to get my hands on the next book! I want to see where the author takes the characters and learn more about them. This book is highly recommend to anyone - get yourself a copy today, you will not be disappointed!
I love it when find a book which takes me completely by surprise. I read Vampire and usual thoughts spring to mind, that will teach me to jump in with preconceptions.
This isn't a standard any other kind of story. Nathaniel, might be an ordinary man, yes like many he is disillusioned with pretty much everything. Of course I knew when he got himself kidnapped by Daniel a sarcastic, intelligent, scheming Vampire it would end or change his life eternally. A thought provoking, challenging, and wonderful unusual story transpired.
As I joined Nathaniel on his journey, slowly and steadily the story enticed me, and gently whispered to me "are you sure that is the truth." I started asking myself questions, yes I do that, a lot but these were questions I have never thought of asking myself before and the fact a book inspired me to do that was amazing.
As this tale ideas skillfully drew me in, I found myself loving characters I really shouldn't, wanting to playing chess with a monster is a castle (and yes I am sure I would win), heartily wishing to slap Elliot into the ground, he is that obnoxious and then there is Bill. If he leapt out of the book to join me, I wouldn't be surprised, I would offer him a beer and endeavour to keep him here for as long as possible, although I may just regret wishing for that!
Do I like a work of fiction that makes me stop and think, honestly, I do, it's a little scary, but I like being scared.
Only Human is skillfully seductive ... don't say I didn't warn you.
J. D. Estrada’s first novel in his The Human Cycle Series is a well-constructed, imaginative, thought-provoking story. As a reader who usually stays away from the vampire genre since sparkly vampires had been introduced, I am extremely happy I decided to overlook their mention in the synopsis.
It’s been a while since I’ve come across a novel which has a world so exceptionally constructed, characters that are realistic in both relationships and dialogue, that not only has you thinking, but evokes so many emotions as you follow the journey of our main protagonist, Nathaniel Runnels—a human amongst what’s supposed to be of fairy tales and folklore. It’s rare to find a new author who emerges with such a superbly written book. To the movie folks: instead of the remakes of the remakes, here’s something original and worth your consideration!
I have to admit, though, I found myself waning through the first third of the book or so. Finding more questions than answers, I easily envisioned myself being trapped within the underground maze of halls and never-ending doors. But don’t let that dissuade you; it has its place, and it all comes together once you reach the end. Highly recommended!
Already have book two, Shadow of a Human, and can’t wait to read on.
This was definitely different from other urban fantasy books I've read! This had a more philosophical feel to it than I expected, and it definitely made me think about things. There's a ton going on here with lots of action-packed moments. I really liked all of the supernatural beings and mythological aspects. We actually get dampyrs/dhampirs here, so that's fun! There's also angels, demons, and plant people, so that was cool. There are some really interesting references here! While some are explicitly mentioned (like Calico Jack), others felt more implied (like Wendy/Peter Pan possibly?).
I'm honestly not sure why I didn't love this more! It does get very complex, and I felt somewhat confused in places. I guess I just generally struggled to really get into the story, despite liking so many of these elements. However, I still think this is worth reading if it sounds interesting!
I'M FINISHED!!!! I honestly thought I'd never have enough time to sit down and actually read a decent amount at a time with this book.
Absolutely wonderful to read. You really need to pay attention to what's going on or you will miss something, and trust me, ALL of it is important.
You'll fall in love with this book after the first few pages. Nathaniel will really surprise you in the end. And come on, it's full of vampires and therians, what more could you ask for?
That THE END was very emotional and surely unexpected (HOW DARE YOU JD HOW FRIKING DARE U) The combination of all mystical creatures was very well balanced and placed. Also I got lost in some travels like had to read 3 times same thing to get the point. and as for Bill...... I have to say nice disguise with that fellow.
I had to literally stop reading to see what he really was until that ending that destroyed my mind.
I have to say i EXPECT!!! to see someone back from the heavens U HEAR ME! so i will not read other book until i can swallow what happen here! SEE YOU ON THE NEXT BOOK!
I enjoyed the story immensely; tho I got lost in trying to remember the whole cast of characters and who belonged to what faction. Love Bill, he seems to hold many of the keys that would open the door to enlightenment of this story. And I can't wait to see what problems Nathaniel causes/gets into/solves...I loved it!!!
Even though I am only human, this was great, a pleasure to read, especially since the writing became better the further I got into the book. Despite a few small grammatical mistakes in the beginning of the book (just remember seeing them, but not clue anymore where in the book exactly), it was still amazing to read.
The story was extremely enthralling and took on an epic journey around the world. It was also magical, especially in the fantastical places in the story. The descriptions were perfect, not too extensive in the real world, and beautifully written in the magical places. Written sometimes in beautiful, lyrical writing. The Halo Maze, Raelis and purgatory just suck you in. What I also liked was the twist on god (or the mother-father) in this book, it just felt like the way it should be.
There were clear distinctions between the characters and between the different paranormal races. And the writing in general was just a pleasure to read. It flowed, which is important to me and at places had a certain, very nice, poetical/lyrical ring to it. Some sentences were just beautifully poetic and the spells were pure chants that felt like very well written lyrics to songs. Not long, but very clear.
One of the most important things that made me love this book so much was that it gave me stuff to think about more and more as the story went on. The whole idea of Earth withering and suffering from our behavior and god ailing because compassion is leaving earth just send such an important message more people should take to heart. Live life with compassion, help your fellow humans (and non humans) out and take care of nature. Please think about the effects your behavior can have on the environment we all live in and share.
4.5 stars because I have to leave some room for the next book, but this was such an amazing read!!
Usually I try to give books more of a chance, but the prose is just so circuitous and opaque — I have to reread almost every sentence twice to understand even its superficial meaning, which should not be the case when so much of it seems to be physical descriptions of setting or characters. (By the way: who popularized "orbs" as a substitution for "eyes"? I just wanna talk.)
Here are a few examples:
I try to avoid judging writing as "good" or "bad", so I'll just say it's not working for me. And I'm honestly not sure whether this was proofread/edited: in the (short) first chapter alone, the verb tenses switch between past and present like five times.
I must confess this is my first experience reading fully in English, so I thought I could’t understand the history but for my surprise, I could!! This book was really impressive to me, besides all the new vocabulary, each word unveiled an outstanding fantasy history. Only human encompasses the supernatural elegantly. You’ll read of Angels, vampires, demons, Goblin race and a lot of mythological creatures… what else can you ask for? I could keep going but I’d start giving spoilers away 😂😂. Great reading experience though! My favorite part “promise to kill…but also promise to live. After all, you’re only human” JD Estrada.
I'd heard so much about this novel that I couldn't wait to buy a copy and I'm so glad I did. Mr Estrada is one of those rare breeds of author who are more like painters. Every word he writes is like a brush stoke of intense colour. His descriptions have the power to completely submerge you within each page. The story begins with the protagonist and hero Nathaniel Runnels, a down and out disillusioned journalist. He is chosen by vampire Daniel to be the saviour, not only of humanity, but all the species who are only thought of as myth. J.D Estrada then takes us on a whirlwind journey around the globe where we meet vampires, werewolves (known as Therians) , Angels, Demons and living plants. Each species is brilliantly written with a full and rich history and the demons are suitably hideous and frightening. This is a powerfully woven piece of literature which is brilliant in both it's scope and depth. I can't wait to start the second book in the Being Human cycle.
