The Alpha Art Gallery series continues with Love Sucks, the second witty supernatural mystery from USA Today bestseller Cynthia St. Aubin!

Someone is killing werewolves. At least, that's the way Vincent Van Gogh tells it when he shows up at Mark Abernathy's art gallery seeking protection. For gallery assistant and art history addict Hanna Harvey, meeting Van Gogh is a dream come true—until death follows the troubled artist to town and Hanna becomes the murderer’s next target.

When Alpha Wereboss Mark Abernathy goes missing, a new wave of murders draws the attention of drool-worthy Detective James Morrison, further complicating Hanna’s epic dating dilemma. Only absinthe-swilling bodyguard Toulouse Lautrec stands between Hanna and the malevolent murderer whose grudge runs deep and appears to be connected to the mystery of her bloodline.

Damning evidence convinces Morrison that saving Hanna’s life requires ending Abernathy’s, and she’s forced to choose between protecting the man who holds the key to her past, or spilling her secrets to the detective who could promise her a future.

USA Today bestselling author Cynthia St. Aubin wrote her first play at age eight and made her brothers perform it for the admission price of gum wrappers. A steal, considering she provided the wrappers in advance. Though her early work debuted to mixed reviews, she never quite gave up on the writing thing, even while earning a mostly useless master's degree in art history and taking her turn as a cube monkey in the corporate warren.

Because the voices in her head kept talking to her, and they discourage drinking at work, she started writing instead. When she's not standing in front of the fridge eating cheese, she's hard at work figuring out which mythological, art historical, or paranormal friends to play with next. She lives in Colorado with the love of her life and three surly cats.

Love Sucks by Cynthia St Aubin
Tails from the Alpha Art Gallery series, Book 2. Paranormal mystery / romantic comedy.
Someone is killing werewolves.
History addict Hanna Harvey meets a few famous artists while working at the art gallery. Who knew the paranormal world was so extensive. Murder and mystery has her in the middle of problems, conflicts and romance.

Hanna’s commentary is so flipping funny. I have to admit meeting Vincent Van Gogh and Toulouse Lautrec, not to mention thee others, might have me babbling too.
I can’t wait to continue this series!

Hilarious, sarcastic, romantic and bingable.

Okay I am LOVING this series and highly highly highly recommend it. This is the best thing I've read in a really really long time.

There are cliffhangers, BUT I still love it. Generally I don't like cliffs because it seems unfair to make readers wait SO long for the next installment but some stories really DO need to be told over several books. The story is that big and they have proper arcs in each book and in the series itself. Someone who KNOWS how to write a series and KNOWS how to write a good cliff... that's different.

Most of my objection to cliffs is that so few authors REALLY know how to do it. Often they're just stretching a book out or breaking it into smaller pieces to have more books to sell. This is not that.

Also, very often the cliff ends on the climax just in the middle of a scene for no reason.

St. Aubin KNOWS how to create a SATISFYING cliffhanger, a moment of shocking and important revelation that you actually almost NEED some time to process. And the revelation at the end of this one was CHEF'S KISS.

Additionally, the hero, Abernathy is SOOO swoon-worthy. He is the BEST. The banter is great, the dialogue is snappy and smartly written. The world is well-developed and multi-layered.

It's also been a while since I've read a book I'm jealous I didn't write... well, here we are!

I listened to this in audio (as I do all my books), and the narration talent on this one is phenomenal, as well. It's a single narrator audiobook, narrated by Stella Hunter who makes you forget only ONE person is narrating everything.

I can't wait to start book 3! I'm also very grateful that the love story itself is a slow burn and the author is properly building the tension. I do NOT care about couples who have sex in the first chapter. I'm not invested in them. I'm not invested in whether or not they have sex .I just DO NOT CARE. I need more than bodies just rubbing against bodies and tab A in slot B.

Even though there is slow build up, there are sex/sexual scenes and they are FIRE. They light up the page and make you really FEEL.

If you are in a book funk, I don't even care if you don't read paranormal, READ THIS. Thank me later.

Halloween Bingo

Hanna Harvey's life has changed beyond recognition in a very short time. She's divorced, living on her own with three cats, and working at an art gallery owned and operated by werewolves. Werewolves who insist that she's a werewolf too. Hanna refuses to believe this (despite her love of a good steak). Her boss, Mark Abernathy, keeps his cards close to his (drool worthy) chest, but finally reveals that Hanna is heir to an alpha werewolf line and that mating with an alpha male will trigger her transformation. Of course he then disappears, as he is prone to doing.

If that wasn't enough, Hanna, an art history major, has discovered how many famous artists are also werewolves and she can hardly contain herself. Despite this newfound delight, she is being determinedly and forcefully pursued by a crowd of hopeful male werewolves, all convinced that she will choose to mate them. Hanna has news for them, she is going to London to track down Abernathy and get the truth out of him.

Hanna's devotion to food, especially cheese, is amusing, as is her reaction to a crowd of men in hot pursuit. Her snark is fabulous as she deals with secretive men, drunken artists, jealous women, art shows, and threats to her life. And you have to know that Oscar Wilde would make an excellent vampire, yes?

I can see book 3 in my future. Abernathy is doing his damnedest not to take advantage of her, despite her current lack of control. I think I need to see how that works out for him.

I read this book to fulfill the Urban Decay square of my Halloween Bingo card. It is also number 21 in my 2024 Read Your Hoard Challenge.

I’m not sure about this book. I enjoyed the storyline; it was a little ridiculous but fun and easy. My biggest beef with the book is Hanna herself. She was extremely juvenile (especially at the beginning of the book). I mean she’s 28 and she was acting like a high schooler. It felt like the author was trying to make her just like Steve, the ridiculous sidekick. It got even stranger for me bc she was like Dr Jekyll and mister Hyde. One min she’s self absorbed and juvenile and the next she’s waxing poetic and is beyond smart. Plus the long monologues in her head where annoying. We get it, she’s an art nerd but a poet she is not. They were long winded and sometimes rather confusing with her metaphors. And don’t get me started with her cheese obsession. I mean she even misses the opportunity to find a guy she flew thousands and thousands of miles to find bc she wanted to eat a cheese soufflé. Ridiculous. That being said I enjoyed the storyline and will probably read the next book I just hope her character improves.

Also there’s the whole thing with Morrison. He’s a complete jerk in my book. In the first book he totally used her and slept with her. All while trying to pin murders on Abernathy. Granted the signs pointed to him. But in this book he does the EXACT SAME THING!!! Using her just for sex, accusing Abernathy of murder even though there was no proof or connection. Then becoming this enraged “protective” man who beats up Abernathy bc he thinks he was abusing Hanna. I just, what? I didn’t like him from the beginning and his character is just slowly getting worse.

My review :

When new threats and crazy werewolves follow her every steps, whom to trust ...

First thing to say I hate the author, she had me on edge for almost the whole book because of the opening scene.
After, I loved this book even more than the first one. When I often think the middle book in a trilogy is the weak one as it just ties some knots but leaves most for the last installment.
But here, the story was going better and better chapter after chapter. I did even forgive her Morrison’s lapse.
Sorry I felt like Hanna was cheating on Mark.
I still had my moments at being upset because of Hanna’s denial and blindness. Yet, Abernathy is so uptight at revealing nothing, I can also see from her point of view how trusting him is not an easy thing.
When things looked like crazy in the first book, here it reaches an other level. From the many artists showing up, the werewolf alphas in a frenzy hunt, a new sleuthing with an other unexpected villain and Hanna’s past getting a new top-notch revelation, it was quite a rollercoaster ride.
My only complain was Abernathy being an absentee for a too long part of this tale.

4.5 stars for a tale loaded like a cheese platter, so many choices and options, suspense, murders, threats, paranormal beings, secrets ...

Now, the end of the year seems very far away to await for the last book.

I was granted an advance copy by the publisher, here is my true and unbiased opinion.

A tad annoying (Spoilers)

This book got on my wick by the end, I was sick of all the food references, yes we get it Hanna likes eating move on! Most of the energy was used describing a meal than the actual relationship between her and Mark, there was far more chemistry with her cheese selection than her male lead. Hanna seems to get over and move on from situations with lightening speed without reaching out for help or even having a mental breakdown, I mean she gets molested/sexually assaulted several times, gets death threats, dead animals left on door step, someone breaks into her house, almost gets raped, attacked by vampire and so and so on and yet is more focused on getting into Mark's pants even though she's been with Morrison anyway. I mean Mark ditches her all the time with no explanation, tells her nothing about anything of importance or about himself and It's all good because he's sex on a stick, she seriously needs to get some self worth and not be so shallow, she has more in common with Morrison. There were little errors throughout like how Mark's car is now a Phantom when it was a Wraith in the first book, said euro's instead of pound sterling for British currency etc also it makes no sense about Hanna suddenly being 'fair game' as she came of age 10yrs prior and now that she is aware she is a werewolf heir, everyone now seems to be a werewolf and making themselves known to her. What did they do? Put an ad in the paper saying go get her boys! I thought the whole Theo Van Gogh thing was a poor storyline and didn't really see why the whole Oscar Wilde vampire scenario was necessary. I enjoyed the first book far more, this book didn't really add anything to value apart from the last couple of pages about her family. Despite all the negative comments there are funny anecdotes and one liners throughout the book and overall Hanna's character is entertaining even if a bit dense on times. These books are quick easy reads, I will read on to the next book hoping it expands more on her becoming a werewolf and Mark in general but this is based purely from the first novel.

Nope. Nope. Nope.

I really liked book one in the series. This book, however, was really hard to get through. The FMC experienced SO MUCH sexual harassment and assault throughout the book and nearly all of the male characters are just terrible. I was unprepared for the sexual harassment storyline that would just not end—it really wasn’t necessary. The author could have gotten the point across about the desirability of the FMC without all the grabbing, groping, forced nudity, and attempted rape.

I really liked about 95% of this but the other 5% was multiple SA attempts by multiple people that the author and main character just seem to shrug off as though it's just par for the course. No content warning, no consequences for the aggressors, not cool.

O.M.G.!!! I just finished this, and I was completely blown away by the end of this! I totally did not see that coming, and I’m completely, utterly gob smacked! So, this second book in the series is even better than the first book, and I really loved that one. Someone is stalking and killing artist werewolves, and now they’ve set their sights on Hanna. This series is a little romantic, a dash suspenseful, a tad gasp-worthy, and a whole lot of fun. I am hoping to continue this wonderful series soon. Definitely, definitely give this series a try! Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

I absolutely loved this book! From famous historical figures coming to life as “monsters” to Hanna’s witty commentary to the twists in the story, I couldn’t stop reading. And of course, that cliffhanger at the end 🥹I hope the rest of the series can keep up this momentum!

What a fucking waste of time. The first book was fine, good even.

This book was garbage. Absolute unadulterated garbage. The werewolf lore? Insane. Makes no sense. Is not based in any folklore. The twists? Make no sense and come out of nowhere.

The biggest annoyance is Hannah as a character. Out of all the crazy, immature, unfunny, and unfeminist pick-me’s of the world, I think she takes the cake.

Everything about this book could be solved with basic communication and the characters feel so unrealistic and their reactions are completely insane and disproportionate to the situation. Honestly, it feels like the author has never talked to another human being (or gay person) in her life, that’s how unrealistic it is.

The only thing she got right is that all cops are bastards.

"I felt a twinge of satisfaction. If I couldn’t be right, I could be irritating." - Hannah This is my new favorite quote of all time

I can not even begin to explain to you how much I love this book. Hannah has just found out that her world isn't as simple as she thought. She now knows there are paranormal creatures living right beside her.. and working with her and that some of her favorite artists are still alive! But maybe meeting your heroes isn't all it's cracked up to be. Vincent Van Gogh doesn't seem to like her and she can't fathom a world where Vincent van Gogh doesn't love her.

Honestly you guys, I love this series. Hannah is hilarious. I couldn't stop laughing.

I loved this book. It was such a fun read. Although the overall theme was serious, the humor and banter of Hanna and Mark and the quirkiness of the other characters made the book a fun and light read.

I thought the addition of the "dead" artists was a unique touch that worked well for the overall atmosphere of the novel. Hanna is awkward, but she definitely found a back bone and began showing her true colors in this novel, which was a great thing! I will definitely be reading the next book.

Hanna is back in all her smartassyness glory! With famous artists are being threatened and her boss is no where to be found. Hanna feels lost, but she’ll get to the bottom of it. No matter what! Love Sucks is charming, witty, and laugh-out-loud funny. Cynthia St. Aubin has created a another must read series!

I'm giving this a low rating because I cannot stand when wolf books make the only unmated female wolf a flashing target for horny men. I do not find creepy strangers harassing women humorous. I think if the book didn't follow this side plot, it would have been more of 3.4/5.

After devouring the first book in the Tails from the Alpha Art Gallery series, I immediately jumped into Love Sucks. Now that Hanna knows the paranormal world exists, she needs to come to terms with her own supernatural heritage. Meanwhile, something is killing werewolves, which draws the attention of Detective Morrison who continues to believe that Hanna’s boss, Abernathy, is getting away with murder.

Love Sucks is another exciting and fun tale. The inclusion of famous historical people as supernatural creatures is hilarious and a delight. I love when history meets fiction in silly ways like this. There are a couple twists that are good - I didn’t see coming. I did get confused a couple times, but the events are explained after the fact, so I do eventually get there.

Despite a few annoying aspects - the non-stop attack of the horny wolves, I loved it. The stories are silly and fun, but engaging. I, along with Hanna, get so frustrated with Mark, but thankfully by the end of this one, we know why and so much more about the paranormal world.

I am enjoying the slow burn chemistry developing between Mark and Hanna. I was worried there would be a love triangle, but lines are drawn and by the end of the book, it’s clear.

The Tails from the Alpha Art Gallery series is perfect for fans of light-hearted urban fantasy and slow-burn romance. They should be read in order.

My Rating: B+

Audiobook Review:
Overall – 5
Performance – 5
Story – 5

OMG is this book ever good!

This is my second book by Cynthia St. Aubin and the story blew me away. I listened to the audiobook and once again Stella Hunter did a fantastic job. I really love all of the different voices she uses for the characters.

Love Sucks picks up where Love Bites left off and let me tell you I couldn’t put this one down – OK I couldn’t stop listening. LOL There are many new characters introduced which made things interesting and there were more than a few breath-stealing scenes.

We learned things about Abernathy and Steven that I sure didn’t see coming. I can’t wait to listen to the next book in this series.

My poor husband had to suffer with me ignoring him on our road trip from Texas because once I started Love Sucks by Cynthia St. Aubin, I had a hard time putting down this book (or, in my case, stopping the audiobook). After the crazy cliffhanger from Love Bites, I needed to know how Hanna was handling the news from her boss, Mark Abernathy. I also couldn’t wait to find out what other adventures or issues Hanna was going to have to deal with due to working with a boss who was a werewolf, as well as the werewolf artists who worked for him at the gallery he owned.

Poor Hanna is not only going to deal with her broody boss, Mark Abernathy but the fact someone is killing werewolves. The only reason why she knows this is that Vincent Van Gogh lets Mark know that werewolf artists like himself are being targeted, and he needs Mark’s protection. Poor Hanna is going to get caught up in another murder/mystery to figure out, but she’ll be targeted, too.

I loved the storyline of this one and how it involved famous artists coming into the picture. Hanna’s reaction to Vincent Van Gogh was downright hilarious, and I would have been the same way if I had met him in person. The way Mark had to calm her down was also funny. What wasn’t funny was the fact that poor Hanna was being targeted again. The poor girl can’t catch a break. Then, there was the issue of her boss, Mark Abernathy, disappearing, leaving her to deal with the artists that he was supposed to protect. He has an excellent reason to leave, and poor Hanna is going to find out that maybe what Mark told her in Love Bites was true because she’s going to have some unexpected visitors showing up to see her in Love Sucks.

I loved this installment, just like the first. It’s full of mystery, murder, and romance and was hard to put down (or stop the audiobook). It’s also a fast-paced story and doesn’t take long to read (or listen to). I love Hanna’s character and how she handles things, especially with how she handles certain characters in this one. (The other werewolves that kept bugging her.) Don’t mess with Hanna, people. I loved how she handled her boss, too, and I hope that the romance grows more with these two. It’s obvious how much Mark and Hanna are into each other when they get jealous.

Yet again, Cynthia left me another cliffhanger, which means I need the third book immediately. I will make time to read it when it comes in the mail, and I’m probably going to binge the rest; that’s how much I’m enjoying this series. I need more of Hanna, Mark, Steve, Hanna’s three cats (who steal the story sometimes), etc. I give Love Sucks five stars and wish I could give it more.

If you enjoy reading funny Paranormal Romances with a murder/mystery storyline and unforgettable characters, then check out this series.

Audiobook Recommendation: If you enjoy listening to your books, check out this one in audiobook format. Stella Hunter is the narrator for this series, and she’s become a favorite of mine. I love how she brings the story and characters to life.

Oooh how I love this series! It is my favorite type of romantic suspense. It is sexy and dangerous and hilarious and dramatic. I love being inside Hanna's head and honestly think she deals with everything she's discovered much more calmly than I would. She is always up for adventure and I can so relate to her anxious running commentary, especially when she meets an idol. There is a lot, A LOT of yearning in this book which really amped up the spice. I was shocked by so many of the twists and felt so many emotions about the end of the book. I already cannot wait to see where this series goes!

WHOA! I didn't see that ending coming. I am loving all the famous writers and artists that pop up in this story as does Hanna. Hanna of the no filter mouth, who gushes over all these famous people and the one who can't decide if she should sleep with Morrison or Abernathy. I am loving the audible narrator who I'm pretty sure is Hanna! Jumping into book 3 now.

Oh this was so fun and what the FUCK was that cliffhanger I’m LIVID WHAT. Didn’t expect that at all, I can’t WAIT to see the implications of how all this unfolds in the next few books. The main character not knowing anything means that I don’t know anything either and I WANNA.
