Being enchanting as a bluebell tends to cause trouble.
No one knows the woods as well as Lady Bluebell Gardner—they are hers after all—and she likes to keep them to herself. When she meets a skeptical, handsome gentleman in her sanctuary, she attempts to usher him out only to find herself in a bigger entanglement than even her fanciful imagination could procure…which is saying something.
Logical Mr. Nathaniel Payne always has a plan, and he typically sticks to it—but he impulsively decides to pick some flowers for his grandmother in the charming bluebell woods as he travels to meet her. When an enchanting young woman emerges from the foliage, he is as shocked as he is smitten. His stunning new companion simultaneously makes him want to pull his hair out and kiss her. He chooses the latter…and now he is dealing with all the consequences of ruining a lady.
When Lady Bluebell and Mr. Payne are forced to marry, neither of them is happy with the arrangement. Will Nathaniel and Bell make each other miserable, or will they fight to make their dreams of family and true love a reality?
Oh, this book was just delightful! Full of swoony romance, beautiful messages, wonderful characters, and a whimsical feel.
Bluebell, one of the daughters in the Gardner family, believes in fairies, is laid back, and carefree. She reminds me of Luna Lovegood and my sister (my sister would go to a wooded part of our property and call it something whimsical; long story, but she is very much a free spirit.) I loved Bluebell's character. She is also so sweet and kind. I especially loved the parts when Bluebell is with her little brother. So cute!
Nathaniel is straight-laced, does things with exactness, and creates to-do lists. I am definitely more like Nathaniel. He is also thoughtful, loving, and wants to surprise Bluebell. Nathaniel has had some hard things handed to him in life, causing him to close himself off to others.
Together? These two are perfect for each other. They complement each other in every way. I found myself drawn into their budding romance as the story went along. I loved that Bluebell helped to crack Nathaniel's shell, so to speak.
There were many parts I did not anticipate and I could not put the book down the last half of the book.
I also found myself laughing at some parts, especially the pirate parts. So cute and fun!
Ugh! Her mother and his family are terrible! Her father? Well, you will just have to read this sweet story to find out.
I definitely recommend this wonderful, whimsical regency romance. Brooke writes beautifully and I look forward to reading book 1. Even though this is book 2 in the series, you do not need to read book 1 in order to enjoy this one.
My Favorite Parts: Marriage of convenience Carriage ride home Her sister, father and Little Ash Nathaniel coming to her defense Working together “pirate” Nathaniel Bit of Mystery and suspense Opposites attract
Content Guide: Closed door: passionate kissing, sharing a bed with one’s wife; mild-violence involving pistols, mild peril, bloody injuries; wine drinking (mild), other drinking to the point of being drunk (mild, side character); Societal classes; Christian: Belief in God; strained familial relationships, adultery (reference and mentioned from the past), death
Thank you to the Author for the review copy. All thoughts are my own.
This was such a beautiful story. It was kind of a new (or maybe the oldest) marriage of convenience where both Bluebell and Nathaniel are not only opposites but also have no idea how to make the marriage work.
I liked both the characters and also the cameos from Book 1 (you can read this book as a standalone, I didn't know about Book 1 until later).
Bluebell is highly imaginative, something she uses to run away from her loneliness and Nathaniel is practical, always making lists and crossing off the work to be done. It was good to see how Bluebell notices Nathaniel and tries to organise her thoughts and life and just how she softens up Nathaniel in the process.
I loved Nathaniel's notes and I wish we had a scene with that (maybe a bonus epilogue, sometime 😉) and how much he tried to make the marriage work.
The book was wonderfully written and I devoured it in 2 sittings. I would recommend this to all regency lovers especially to fans of marriage of convenience and opposites attract.
“I hope that one day, your life isn’t something you have to escape. That your reality is better than any story you could tell yourself.”
Bluebell’s Fate enchanted me with its whimsy, romance, & endearing characters. It’s a delightful Regency romance with a touch of fairylike magic, an opposites attract marriage of convenience, & surprising depth. This is my first book by Brooke Hampton & definitely won’t be my last.
Lady Bluebell Gardner lives for her woods. There she explores her imagination & revels in the stories she creates. When a handsome hero suddenly appears in her beloved sanctuary, she wonders if he’s real. All too soon though, he becomes more than a stranger when her presence alone with him is discovered & she’s forced to marry him.
Mr. Nathaniel Payne’s logical, meticulous about his lists, & loves having his life planned out. When he deviates from his plan & goes to pick bluebells in the woods, he meets a gorgeous woman & wonders for the first time if fairies are real. Discovered coming out of the woods with her by a societal mischief maker, he finds his carefully planned out life in chaos, & suddenly betrothed to Lady Bluebell.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story! Bell’s & Nathaniel’s opposites attract romance was so well done. There’s a spark of attraction between them from the very beginning, but to make their marriage work, they really have to get to know each other. I loved watching them fall in love as they learn how to communicate & work through their differences so that they compliment each other. The touch of magic with the bluebells, Bell’s stories, & the woods added a fairytale like quality that made this story even more amazing.
Nathaniel’s past poses a bit of a mystery & I enjoyed learning more about his family right along with Bell. I also adored Nathaniel’s grandmother/Bell’s godmother. The guidance & advice she gives is invaluable & I enjoyed how she helped these two find happiness together. Loved Bell’s brother Ash as well!
Highest of recommendations! Though part of a series, it’s easily read as a standalone. Looking forward to more books by this author! I received an advanced complimentary copy from the author but also purchased a copy through Kindle Unlimited. All opinions are my own & voluntarily provided. 4-4.5 stars!
~Being enchanting as a bluebell tends to cause trouble...
“I hope that one day, your life isn’t something you have to escape. That your reality is better than any story you could tell yourself.”
-Bluebell’s Fate, is book two in the Gardener Family Romance Series. While it could easily be read as a stand alone, it is even more endearing of a story following book one, The Perfect Rose, especially with dear side characters that make their appearances in book two. Bluebell’s Fate continues on with It another delightful and unique story within, that has such heart. It has endearing characters who are rather opposites yet, deep down truly want and dream of the same things, to be seen for the amazing persons they are, and to truly belong. Both have faced hard struggles within family dynamics and from their past but, watching them on an adventure and journey of the heart has all the feels. Watching them be brave, take courage, and then rise triumphantly over struggles, insecurities, and mishaps both individually and together was heartwarming! Seeing characters creating their own magic instead of waiting for the magic to find them shines bright in this story. The importance of hope, trust, love, beauty are weaved beautifully within this dear tale as well. This sweet historical romance that has twists and turns on its journey to home is one to not miss. It is worth the read and already has me excited for more to come in this dear series, my friends!🙌🏻📚🩷
“You are the heart. Without you, nothing would move and create the beautiful, masterful adventure that is our life.”
-Content: controlling parents, death (of past family members; present one), mild peril/violence, mentioning of mistress (past; side characters), kisses only.
Sweet historical romance with a hint of magical folklore spread throughout. I enjoyed this one and there were definitely a few plot twists I didn’t see coming! I would definitely recommend reading Rose’s book first because they really build on each other. Love how the girls in the Gardener family are all named after different flowers and how the author really embraces the flowers characteristics into the girls themselves. I feel like I got to know the Gardener family a lot more in this one but man their mom is the worst and Nathaniel’s parents were also pretty horrible. Luckily he has an amazing grandmother. Bell’s father definitely redeemed himself to me in this one. Loved Ash and can’t wait to learn more about Lavender.
(Bluebell) Bell has a love for all things mystical and feels more at home in the forest behind her home telling her stories of fairies and avoiding her mother than inside it. One day she happens upon a man in her forest and he isn’t sure if she is just a figment of his imagination or truly the most beautiful woman he has even seen. After an events force them into a marriage to save Bell from ruin they have to go through all the struggles of getting to know each other after they are already married.
Nathaniel is very practical and loves lists and definitely isn’t prone to fantastical thoughts or stories and having to learn to live with his wife and make her happy takes hard work but thankfully she enriches his life in ways he never could have imagined.
Loved getting to see these two grow to love and appreciate each other and communicate!
“Maybe, just maybe, she could be his fairy. The one who paved a way to happiness for them both. At the very least, it couldn’t hurt to try.”
I really enjoyed this book! This story had such a magical and enchanting feel to it. Bell’s imagination reminds me of Anne of Green Gables' imagination. Though they were forced into marriage, Bell and Nathaniel do their best to grow to love the other. It’s doesn’t happen quickly and it’s a slow burn. But watching their friendship grow and eventually become true love was magical to watch unfold. Nathaniel was so sweet to Bell. And “pirate Nathaniel” was my favorite. 🫶🏻Brooke is a new to me author and I really enjoyed her writing. It was easy to read and captivating. Now I need to go back and read book 1. 🤩 If you love the regency era, you will love this book.

Thank you, Brooke, for the ARC!! I’m so honored you asked me to be on your team. All opinions of this book are my own.
One of my favorite things about indie books is how they can dig into details of several stories within the primary story. It’s not just one or two conflicts pushing the plot or characters, it’s several.
This sweet historical romance that twists and turns on its journey to home. I thought it would go one way, then nope. There it went. I was hooked. There were things I loved and things that aggravated me and more than a few thoughts to discuss with friends who pick this up.
While I loved the first book more of the two, this was a beautiful entry in the Gardner family stories. Bluebell’s story definitely needed telling.
Keep the stories coming, Brooke!!
**I received a free advance ebook from the author. All words and opinions here are my own. As well as my decision to not share spoilers.
The Brief: Nathaniel and Bell had an enchanting meet and greet that had life changing consequences resulting in a marriage.
The Debrief: This is a new to me author and I was so pleasantly surprised with this delightful story! It gives regency fairy tale vibes with a dose of danger. Characters to cheer for and a handful to boo very loudly. I especially liked Bell’s siblings and godmother. But my favorite thing is how real it felt. I’m not talking about real fairies, but the challenge of choosing to love someone as they are - and without conditions. So enjoyable!!
The Rhyme: Nathaniel may have been enchanted with Bell, but now life is not following his plan. Can Bell find the magic inside of herself and build a life with a loving man?
“And I hope that one day, your life isn’t something you have to escape. That your reality is better than any story you could tell yourself.”
When I first started reading this book I was struggling to connect with Bluebell. She is so different than me, she daydreamed and talked about fairies. Im more like Nathaniel. I gravitate towards logic and lists 🤣, but I’m so glad that I kept reading, because as I understood her more, I found myself really loving her character. I love the dynamic between the two opposite personalities, the romance was a nice slow burn, and the hint of mystery and suspense was really great. This is my first book by @authorbrookehampton and I cannot wait to go back and read the first one!! Thank you Brooke for allowing me to read and review this book. I adored it!
🧚🏻Regency Romance 🧚🏻Book 2 in Series/Can Standalone 🧚🏻Kissing Only 🧚🏻No Swearing 🧚🏻Death, Mild Violence, Adultery
Fairies, pirates, and magical woods all in a regency book?! Yes, please! This book is an incredibly delightful marriage of convenience that starts with a single kiss in the woods. It kept me entertained up until the ending! Bell is the very essence of fairies and magic and everything found in the woods while Nathaniel is all logic and list making. So much to love with this story! It’s book 2 of the series but can be read alone (and I’m definitely looking forward to reading the first book). Other things I loved: 🧚 Bluebell magic 🧚 Bell’s little brother, Ash 🧚 Godmother 🧚 Pirate Nathaniel 🧚 The love of outdoors 🧚 The plot twist ending!
Oh. My. Word. What an adventure this book was! Opposites attract meets regency romance meets marraige of conveince? Um, yes please!
Lady Bluebell is a creative soul, prone to daydreaming, wandering, and doodling, while Mr. Nathaniel Payne is precise, punctual, and logical almost to a fault. When fate (or could it have been fairies?) throw Bluebell and Nathaniel together for a magical moment in the woods, the whole course of their lives changes. It seems as if the moment they leave the woods, the magic of their connection evaporates in the face of a hasty marriage that is forced upon them to prevent a scandal. Nathaniel is left feeling unsteady by this drastic change of plans and uncertain of how to connect with a woman so different from himself, and Bluebell is left broken from the fear that her marriage might not be the love match she had always dreamed it would be. As the two of them fight to make their marriage work, will they be able to recapture the magic of their first "meet cute" and forge a marriage better than any fairy tale they've dreamed of?
This romance really had so much depth to it. Although Nathaniel and Bluebell had chemistry from the beginning, they quickly discovered that that wasn't enough to sustain their relationship. It was so heartwarming to watch them work through their difficulties and fight for love and friendship. It was even more rewarding to follow their journey because the two of them were such opposites!
There was a bit of miscommunication between them, which was frustrating for a little bit, but I felt like the worst of it was resolved quickly enough to my satisfaction. And anyways, I feel like a little bit of miscommunication is mandatory in a marriage of convience! It makes the payoff of finding love and connection that much sweeter and feels authentic to real life relationships. I also loved how the story had a bit of unexpected suspense towards the end. I don't want to say too much to avoid spoilers, so I'll just say I loved how everything tied together.
One more random thought, I loved the research and time the author put into bluebell and fairy lore. Pay close attention to everything you learn about bluebells, you don't want to miss the layers of meaning in each mention!
Other Favorite highlights - The slow burn marriage of conveince - Lord Gardner and Nathaniel - Little Lord Ash - Bluebell's Godmother - Cameos from Rose and Frederick
Overall, this was a great regency romance that I would highly recommend. I'm excited to see if we get Lavender's story next!
I adored Bell and Nathaniel’s first meeting. It is from this that their lives get turned upside down and now must marry.
Nathaniel is a practical list maker. He thinks things through thoroughly before acting.
Bell lives in stories. Her mind is full of fanciful fairies and daydreams.
Nathaniel and Bell have a lot to learn about each other and marriage. They come from very different backgrounds and this lends to some frustrating situations. They both must let go of what they imagined for their futures. They are both so caring and I loved watching them learn and grow, even through some struggles. Sharing fears and heartaches.
I adored Bell’s relationship with her godmother and her brother. What a sweet relationship it is.
I loved seeing Bell’s sister Rose and how she handled certain people IYKYK. Now I must read her story!
This was such a delightful treasure and I adored it all.
Thank you to Brooke Hampton for the copy. All opinions are my own.
“I’d make every choice a thousand times again so long as it leads me to be here with you.”
* Ooh! We’re getting right to it! * Oh, man * Ah yes, a man who loves lists * I’m thinking a conversation between these two would be great… * Maybe you could try talking to her… 😅 * These two *facepalm* * Her sister is the best 😂 * Stoppp. That’s so cute of him! * So much longing * Them pretending is so cute! * Oh my gosh, what?? * Awwww
I have some mixed feelings about this book.
Overall, it was cute and sweet and fun. I liked both Bluebell and Nathaniel as characters.
However, the entire thing was basically just one huge miscommunication trope which is definitely not my favorite. So that was frustrating for sure.
There was also a lot going on and some twists and plot things that I feel like were kinda unnecessary and maybe not described the best/most clear. So that was a little strange in my opinion. Especially all the action that just popped up at the end.
But like I said, overall I did enjoy it and think it was a sweet story!
“What is a heroine without an obstacle to overcome?”
“We all have rough days, but that doesn’t mean we stop trying to have good ones”
“You are vibrant, and humble, and astonishingly beautiful. But most importantly, your kindness and compassion spread to everyone around you.”
Thanks to the author for the ebook. All opinions are my own.
This story was utterly magical and the beauty within was unlike any story I’ve read. I so enjoyed the whimsical dream this read created. Bluebell is now one of my most favorite FMC and the way the MC’s grew in their circumstances and supported each other warmed my heart.
“I’m starting to believe that these woods are not entirely normal.”
Bluebell Gardner was given extra freedom because of the way she could comfort her brother and her highly imaginative personality made the woods her favorite place to be so her father gave the woods to her when she was young. Always a part of the magic inside she guides others and when a man is lost and needs her assistance she chooses to help him and it changes her life forever.
Nathaniel Payne is a man of Logic and Lists and oblivious to the tales of the woods. When Bell appears he isn’t sure if she is real. As she guides him to his carriage they find out they have been in the woods for too long to be proper and they are forced to wed.

Absolutely adored this read! If you love sweet romances filled with love understanding, and the will to face dragons, this is the story for you. Thank you so much Brooke for the opportunity to get lost in the magic of this story!
Bluebell Gardner is the most at home and happiest when she is in the woods by her house. This is her magical place, complete with flowers after which she is named, and her created stories of fairies.
Bell is a breath of fresh air with her outlook on life and her off-key singing. Using her imagination to escape harder things in life makes her someone you’d like to spend time with. She is wise, has a tender heart, and never puts on airs. I love how she enhances Nathaniel’s life in ways that he didn’t even know he needed.
Nathaniel is a man who has a huge heart. Time and again he tries to please his parents, but no matter how many times or how hard he tries, his efforts are never good enough. He never holds a grudge and always forgives. His parents don’t see the treasure they have, but I am glad his grandmother did. After a rough start in their relationship, I am sure that he and Bluebell would be one of those couples that people would use their marriage as an example to their children.

This is the second book in the Gardner Family Romance series but can be read as a standalone. I received a complimentary copy of the book. All opinions expressed are my own with no obligation to write a positive review.
This was a sweet romance with some memorable characters and a happy ever after. Second in a series, it was fun to see the Gardner siblings, especially Rose and Frederick make an appearance (though this can be read completely as a standalone). Read this for: *Regency romance *Lovely cottage setting *Memorable meet cute *Bit of magic (fairy legends/bluebell flower superstitions) *Marriage of convenience (and some forced proximity) *Dual POV *Secondary characters (Lord Gardner, Ash, a godmother, and a loving housekeeper in particular) *Nathaniel with his genuine heart *Whimsical heroine
I liked a lot about this book, but there were also some things that didn't feel completely developed and pulled through in the story for me and some missed opportunities in my opinion that could have really made the moment. I felt like the twist at the end felt abrupt and not in tune with the tone of the story. It could have been, but the ground work for that extreme moment didn't feel well developed or established prior. It didn’t feel consistent and fully resolved after for what the impact should have been. I also felt like the story leaned a little too much into the whimsical with the fairies for me to an extent it ended up pulling me out of the story instead of enhancing it. I wanted a little more communication earlier on and a bit more consistency with Bluebell's character. I still enjoyed the story though. This is a clean romance.
Bell has a vivid imagination but never had she imagined she would be forced to marry a stranger after her reputation has been compromised. She and Nathaniel seem to be opposites in almost every way and though she finds herself falling for him, he does not seem to feel the same and giving him her heart would only lead to heartbreak.
What you'll love: Regency era dual pov marriage of convenience opposites attract touch of whimsy and magic slow burn unforgettable meet-cute cottage setting plot twists Bluebell's godmother five-letter words sweet epilogue
I love the marriage of convenience trope in Regency romances and Nathaniel and Bell are so perfect together despite Nathaniel being more practical and Bell who loves to create and daydream. It takes them time to figure out how to communicate and to overcome misunderstandings, but when they do, it is was so sweet!
I loved the family dynamic between Bell and her siblings and father (I'm just sorry they all have to put up with her mom!) and the story of her and her godmother was so incredibly heart touching. I also loved the cameos of Rose and Frederick!!
This is the second book in the series but can be read as a standalone. If you love sweet Regency romances with quirky heroines and protective, pragmatic heroes, this book is for you!
I received a complimentary copy but a positive review was not required.
“Use the magic inside of you, and this marriage will be a grand adventure.”
I was completely enchanted by this tale and couldn’t quite decide if the magic was real or perceived, but why not? I’m going to believe because don’t we all have a bit of magic inside of us?
When a whimsical and mystical meeting happens in the woods between Bluebell and stranger Nathaniel, reputations are compromised and a marriage is forced. I was intrigued throughout this whole story, immersed in the whimsy, attraction, and characters who don’t quite know what to do with one another. Trying to make sense of a complicated situation and struggling to come to know each other was a process…and a grand adventure at times…but also an extremely fun journey.
I loved the fairy and bluebell aspects, as well as Godmother. This whole book is so dreamy and is such a unique twist on a Regency story.
Content: mild romance

Bluebell and Nathaniel meet by chance in the woods near Bluebell’s home—the woods that feel magical, where she’s free of expectations and can weave stories. Their first meeting was so cute and had me hooked.
The story is a little like mixing the enchantment of Sleeping Beauty with the realism and steadiness of Mr. Knightly in Emma. Nathaniel is too level-headed and methodical to understand how he finds himself with a baffling beauty who is creative and spontaneous. He gets momentarily caught up in it before returning to a stark reality—her reputation is compromised and he must do the honorable thing and marry her.
The two find themselves at loose ends in their hasty marriage. I love how they muddle through as they struggle to understand someone so completely their opposite. They begin to appreciate the strengths and help the other offers.
I love Brooke Hampton’s storytelling—it’s fresh and fun. I loved Bluebell and Nathaniel’s story!
Nathaniel and Bluebells’s journey is bumpy, as one would imagine a marriage of convenience between two very different personalities would be. Yet, the way is made sweet by a handful of wonderful, secondary characters who lend help and support, as well as the fact that both Nathaniel and Bluebell genuinely desire to turn their arrangement into more. This stories shines from the kindness and care both main characters show each other, and their willingness to work at understanding each other. 💙 This felt realistic and romantic- seeing the relationship that you have to work at, and be intentional to water and grow, is even more relatable and meaningful. 💙 “I’m asking you to let me come along. Allow me to be a part of the magic that fuels your hopes and dreams.”
“We all have rough days, but that doesn’t mean we stop trying to have good ones, dear child.”
“I’d make every choice a thousand times again so long as it leads me to be here with you.”
This is such a fun historical fiction book with a touch of magic.
Lady Bluebell is getting ready for a visit from a woman who she knows as her Godmother. I loved all of the ways she thinks the bluebells help her or hinder others. That was such a fun part of the book. And it was even more fun that she was named after them.
Nathaniel is on the way to meet his grandmother to escort her home. Only, he's early so he decides to go for a walk in the forest. He picks a bluebell and is instantly lost in the forest. Until he finds a young lady to sweep off her feet. But...society's rules dictate that couples who are alone this way must marry. Nathaniel is very much of a rule follower. And that helps some things, but it does make his relationship with Bluebell a little tricky.
I loved watching these two figure out their lives together. They have many ups and many downs, but the ending is so worth it!
Pure whimsy! Dear Bluebell lost in her fantastical woods happens upon a stranger that is instantly enthralled. Torn out of her fantasy world she is now married to this stranger. How do they get to know each other? How does fancy and practicality work together in a marriage? How do they learn to love each other?
I loved every single page of this book! I loved the whimsical nod to fairies. I loved to see Nathaniel put aside some of his practicality and allow some fun and whimsy into his life. Oh and did I mention duals and family secrets! Please do yourself a favor and read this book!
Awww this was a very sweet story. Nathaniel and Bluebell are really cute together. Total opposites attract, which allowed them to round each other out in just the right ways. This is my first read for Brooke, and I really enjoyed it. The writing had a very whimsical, almost fairy-tale feel to it, which I thought matched Bluebell's character perfectly. And of course, who doesn't like a good marriage of convenience with characters you can love and ones...well, you can just hate XD A good read!
I enjoyed this book! Brooke Hampton weaves a magical tale of love and learning. I'm always a sucker for an unexpected marriage and thus some forced proximity. Bell and Nathaniel are great examples of compromise and learning to make a marriage work. I love how fairies and magic make a foundation for this story, and we even get a fairy godmother to boot! I absolutely recommend this book if you're looking for a cozy read and a dose of magic and love.
This was such a sweet book with loads of magic and adventure!! Bluebell and Nathaniel are so different yet they work so well together! They are learning to make their marriage of convenience work and to understand each other!! Definitely read this book if you’re looking for a take on regency romance like you’ve never read before!!
Things you’ll love: 🧚 Forced Marriage 🧚 Opposites Attract 🧚 Instant Attraction 🧚 Well done Family Dynamics 🧚 Her active imagination 🧚 He calls her a Fairy 🧚 She calls him a Pirate
Too much tell and not enough show. Lots of scene and day jumps in the narrative without adequately finishing the scene in progress. Lack of communication plays a big part in the story, which worked at the beginning but got old.
An enchanting regency romance! 🧚♂️ Bluebell and Nathaniel's story is entertaining and sweet; with just the right bit of a dark element, overall it was magical.
Bell is a dreamer, a girl of the forest and the woodlands. Nathaniel is a realist, a man of logic and thinking. But when one impulsive moment between them ends up tying them to each other, they will have to find the ways they are similar. I loved the chemistry between these two! The romance was very sweet and realistic. They are very different, so there were some complications between them, but what made it so special was the determination of both to work through their differences and learn to be there for each other. The way they would prioritize each other and their needs was so romantic! The side characters were great, never over taking the story but adding so much to it! And of course, it was so wonderful to see Rose again! I can’t wait to read more in this series!
Thank you to the author for an arc copy. All thoughts are my own.
