His mission was simple . . . until he fell for her.
Trey
I watched my parents die in an explosion—and it was no accident. Now I’m determined to bring down the people responsible.
My mission is simple: get close to a woman named Arella and uncover the secret behind her immunity to my powers. If I can replicate it, I’ll finally gain the upper hand against the people who shattered my life.
But here’s the catch: Arella has no idea she’s immune—or that people with powers even exist.
As I get closer to her, I discover that her life is in danger. Now I face a heart-wrenching decision: complete my mission or protect the woman I never meant to fall for.
Arella
After escaping an abusive relationship, the last thing I need is to get tangled up with some bad boy musician with a dark and troubled past.
But no matter how much I resist, Trey’s playful charm and protective nature gradually tear down my walls. I want to give him a chance, but he’s keeping secrets from me.
How does he know things he shouldn’t? How do his wounds heal so unnaturally fast? And most importantly, why is he asking—no, begging—me to run away with him?
Ordinary Secrets is the gripping first book in the Secrets Trilogy, loaded with sizzling tension, steamy scenes, and a cliffhanger that will leave you wanting more. This dual POV contemporary fantasy romance is ideal for readers 18+ craving a slow burn forbidden love that will break your heart—and ultimately piece it back together.
Melissa Lam loves reading and writing romance books that take the reader on an emotional roller coaster full of mystery, suspense, and heartache.
As an extroverted introvert who doesn’t like to leave the house (because it requires wearing pants), Melissa enjoys playing strategic board games and taking long showers. When she does find the will to put pants on, she can be found traveling, enjoying bubble tea, or experiencing the world through food.
TL;DR I like to eat and write about heartbreaking stuff.

Mmm the tension and the spice are everything in this book. He shouldn't want her but he does. As things heat up and the story unfolds not only do we get to enjoy the show we also get the heart melting healing between the two of them. Trey is everything you could want from and MMC and the touch her and die vibes are just my favorite thing in a read. Arella is strong, smart and you are rooting for her from the start. I also really enjoyed the side characters and found family aspect of the book. Its also fun to have some great BFFs around. Loved the action, story building and intrigue. Overall really enjoyable and hot read. Thank you to the author for gifting me this book. I am voluntarily leaving a review.
Favorite quote: I kiss her as if I'm starving - because I am - for her.
This book has: Morally Grey MMC Fake Dating Forced Proximity Forbidden Love Touch her and die Found Family
This book/Series needs WAAAYYY more attention and hype!! It was the perfect amount of romance, comedy, fantasy, heartbreaking, feet kicking, and much more! Recommend to anyone that's every like SJM, Haunting Adeline, Twilight, or anything similar. Love love loved this read, and I can't wait to start the next book!
I went into “Ordinary Secrets” by Melissa Lam not knowing much about it… and I am glad! It caught me off guard in the best ways possible. This is a slow-burn contemporary fantasy romance that had me hooked from the first chapter.
In this world there are “ordinaries” which are just non-magic/non-supe type people. Muggles if you will. Then there are the “Zordis” which are are the humans with special powers that can befriend ordinaries… but are forbidden from being anything else with them.
The FMC is Arella, a woman who is just trying to get back her life after being with an abusive ex-boyfriend who won’t leave her alone. She ends up falling for a mysterious musician named Trey who has literal secrets that could get him locked up in z-prison if he reveals them to her.
This world feels very X-Men and Twilight-ish to me, which is not a bad thing – I love both! The Zordis are very much like the X-Men… and Arella is very much like Bella in that Trey can’t use his powers on her. There is even a secluded open meadow. There is political/family politics going on and a battle of good vs evil that is brewing in the background (which I suspect will come out even more in the next 2 books).
The spice is a slow-burn… but it does heat up! Just be prepared that there is not a ton. That is not the focus of this book, it has more plot than spice!
It felt very YA with nothing but make out sessions as soon as they decided they were a thing. I also didn’t care for just throwing a Z in front of things and making them different. By the end of the book everything just seemed repetitive and annoying.
Ordinary Secrets is a slow burn, paranormal romance, with a lot of action that you can't put down!
This world has regular humans, or Ordinaries, and then super humans with powers, called Zordis.
The MMC Trey is a Zordi, who has a tragic childhood, in which his parents died. The FMC Arella, is an Ordinary with the unique gift of immunity, which means she is immune to Zordi powers. It is Trey's current mission to figure out what causes Arella's immunity so the Zordi's can use it in their larger ongoing war.
You can guess that a human "get to know you" assignment is probably going to cause Trey to start having some kind of feelings. Especially considering he finds Arella to be so attractive, and vice versa. I enjoy how, as the reader, you are truly on this mission with Trey, because the reader does not know what causes Arella's immunity, so as Trey keeps uncovering secrets, it is exciting to start trying to unravel the mystery with him.
I loved Arella's character, after everything she has been through, she is still willing to open her heart to someone, even if very slowly. That takes a lot of courage. I love her friend Javina, the perfect opposite to Arella, really outgoing and energetic, and pushes Arella to not just stay at home by herself.
On the other hand, I liked Trey at first. But once things start happening (don't want to put any spoilers in here), he starts to get annoyingly overprotective of Arella. While I understand why, especially because he cannot tell her the truth of everything that is going on, which makes it that much harder for him to keep her safe, he also just gets a bit too much. Honestly, because Trey won't tell Arella the truth, the way he starts acting and treating her would be a seriously huge red flag to regular human relationships. I feel like a lot of women would have just left at this point in the story. And again, I completely understand why he is doing it, but from Arella's perspective, she has no idea, and he is just being a slightly creepily over-protective, and controlling guy. I also don't like how Trey constantly offers to basically be Arella's sugar daddy. Again, from his perspective, it makes sense, from Arella's it is annoying. I do like Trey's character overall though, just the way he starts acting in the end makes me not like him for now.
Trey's best friend Liz, she is a favorite character. I love Liz and Trey's relationship, and how Liz is able to be "free' around Trey in a way she cannot be with pretty much anyone else.
This story is so good, and I love the world building that the author has done. You won't be able to put it down! The end is a true cliffhanger, so be excited that the next book comes out so soon!!!
Some Fav Quotes: "If the crowd isn't impressed by how many instruments he can play, it's probably because they're too busy gawking at his arm muscles straining the sleeves of his leather jacket."
"I wave from the pizza table, hoping my boner isn't noticeable."
"I don't stop, I don't want to stop. If someone tried to pry me away from her, I'd blast them with a fireball."
"She tastes amazing - like honeyed watermelon on a warm summer day."
"Uncontrollable passion. It unearthed a deep intensity in my soul that I don't know how to explain."
Thank you so much to the author for a copy of this book!!
Alright, I finally had a minute to write a review lol. This book is Melissa’s debut novel and what a ride it was..
If you’re looking for a chill HEA with a sexy MMC & a simple FMC this ain’t it! lol
This book throws a lot at you, with twist & turns and when you finally think it’s done ah nope it’s not haha.
I enjoyed the storyline & I cannot wait to see what happens in book 2 & 3 (and 4-10 🤣)
The reason why it’s not a 5 star (quit reading if you haven’t read it yet) - miscommunication, that bothers me soo much and I want to yell & scream (not in a good way lol) - an oopsy (iykyk)
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

Wow. Just wow. This book completely blew me away! To say I loved this book would be an understatement—I'm officially a die-hard fan of the author and her writing. From the very first page, this story had me hooked. The plot is gripping, the romance is deliciously intense, and the emotional depth? Absolutely stunning. Trey and Arella’s chemistry is everything I love in a slow-burn, forbidden romance—equal parts heart-wrenching and breathtaking. Trey’s mysterious past and protective nature, paired with Arella’s strength and resilience, made their journey impossible to put down.
Beyond the romance, I truly appreciated the way this book handled difficult topics like trauma and abuse with so much care and awareness. It added so much depth to the story, making it even more powerful and emotional. And can we talk about the side characters?! Liz and Javina absolutely stole my heart—I need more of them ASAP. Her writing is beyond inspiring, and as an aspiring writer myself, I found myself completely in awe of her storytelling. And that cliffhanger? Absolutely heart-shattering—it left me reeling, desperate for the next book. I NEED to know what happens next!
If you love contemporary fantasy with a sizzling romance, high stakes, and characters that stay with you long after you’ve turned the last page, this book is an absolute must-read! 💜✨
3 ⭐️ The pacing is fast, the story is easy to get into, and the emotional tension had me hooked right from the start.
I really loved getting the MMC’s POV—since I usually read books that focus on the FMC, it was refreshing (and swoony!) to see the longing and falling from his side. Trey’s protective nature and the small things he did to make Arella happy were so sweet.
That said, I’m not the biggest fan of the miscommunication trope, which is why this wasn’t a 5-star read for me. Still, the chemistry between them is undeniable, and the spice was so good.
This definitely read more as a romance with light fantasy elements sprinkled in. The magical aspects were simple and easy to follow, which I appreciated, but I do hope that side of the story gets fleshed out more in the next book.
As for the ending, I genuinely didn’t see that twist coming. I have mixed feelings about it, but it left me invested and wanting to find out what happens next!
Thank you to Melissa for gifting me this book. All opinions are my own!
I was gifted this book with no obligations except an honest review.
This book couldn't have come at a better time. I had just read nostop books with AH broody MMCs. Trey is a breath of fresh air!, outwardly confident but internally awkward, I loved the deviation of the cookie cutter MMC mold.
✅️ Contemporary Fantasy romance ✅️ Fake dating ✅️ Secret Identity ✅️ Mystery ✅️ Forbidden love ✅️ Musician MMC
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Ordinary Secrets by Melissa Lam is an enchanting blend of romance and fantasy, seamlessly intertwining elements of both genres to create a captivating narrative. The relationship between the two main characters is both tender and thrilling, and Trey is the epitome of a book boyfriend—charming, complex, and utterly swoon-worthy.
One of the standout features of this novel is how it keeps readers on the edge of their seats, constantly guessing and intrigued. With unexpected twists and a side of mystery, the story unfolds in surprising ways, adding layers of depth and excitement to the romance. Lam does an excellent job of weaving these elements together, ensuring that the story never feels predictable.
This thrilling read couldn’t have come at a better time for me. After reading a string of books with brooding, angst-filled male main characters, Trey was a refreshing change of pace. He’s outwardly confident yet internally awkward, a perfect balance that breaks away from the typical “cookie-cutter” MMC mold. I absolutely loved this deviation, as it made Trey feel real and relatable.
Lam does an excellent job of creating a unique and engaging character dynamic, and Trey’s personality adds a delightful layer of charm to the story. This book offers not just a romance, but a deeper exploration of character development and authenticity. For anyone in need of a refreshing take on romance with a hero who is both strong and endearingly human, Ordinary Secrets is a must-read.
While I want to share so much more about the plot, I truly don’t want to spoil the magic for others. All I can say is that Ordinary Secrets is a book that will keep you hooked from start to finish, offering a beautiful balance of romance, fantasy, and mystery. Highly recommend it for fans of both genres!
This book started out slow but eventually it picked up and I couldn't put the book down. It's very relatable and funny but also keeps you guessing on what will happen next. Secrets get exposed and soon everyone is second guessing who they can trust. For Trey, the lines between work and personal relationships get blurred and he is on a dangerous slope of getting caught. For Arealla, she thought she found the one but he is hiding something big that could change her mind on how she feels about him.
Thank you so much to the author Melissa for gifting me this book!!!! All opinions are my own!
I was HOOKED from the very first chapter! I connected with both Trey and Arella in ways that really helped me heal different parts of myself in a way. Trust me you don’t want to miss out on this! Trey is everything!!!!!
✅The spicy is 🥵🥵 ✅Add some slow and forbidden romance ✅✅✅ ✅POV - both Arella and Trey! ✅Let’s not forget about that amazing cliffhanger that will definitely have you craving more ✅ There were definitely some tears shed and pacing may have taken place!! ✅ Ordi who is immune and a Zordi who needs to know why
I felt like the book started off choppy but was able to get into it. I was interested in the plot and the pacing was fast. The biggest issue for me was the Zordi thing for unique world building the use of z before everything just felt cheap. Z-ordinary Z-prison Z-(v)irus Z-(s)ense 3.5
Musician and magic user Trey Grant is sent on a mission to figure out how a magicless Arella is immune to those with powers, while also hoping to use that information against his enemies.
Oh lawd 😣 😣 don’t mind me while I’m curled up in the fetal position cause whyyy 😭
Well yall it looks like I’m coming out of retirement and stomping on quite a few heads. Alexa, you already know, go ahead and place that order for some new boots boo. It’s showtime 🥾💥. Maybe I should make a new rating system 🤔 On a scale from 1-5 steel toed boots
Trey 😑 you and I need to have a discussion about boundaries and choices 🤦🏾♀️. I’m so disappointed. But I loved loved loved his inner dialogue.
Ari girl what are we gonna do 😐
The friendships in this one will make you smile. Between Ari and her bestie Javina, and Trey with his bestie Liz you can definitely feel the love
If you like obsessive mmc’s and books that take you through a range of emotions then go ahead and grab this one loves
I was drawn in immediately and couldn't put it down. The author does a great job developing the plot and adding just the right amount of spice and intrigue. I look forward to book 2.
Ordinary Secrets is the first book in a new contemporary fantasy romance series. In this world there are two types of people Zordinary and Ordinary. Zordinary people have magical abilities and they are not allowed to let the ordinaries know about their existence. Trey is Zordinary. He is a hot, motorcycle riding, rock band singer who appears to be just another playboy to all the ordinaries. The only person who really knows him is his best friend and fellow Zordi, Liz. Liz is that friend that everyone needs. She’s loyal and supportive but will call you out if she needs to. As close as Trey and Liz are, he still has secrets and he is on a mission to solve mysteries that have haunted him since childhood. Trey’s mission leads him to Arella. Arella could be the key to everything, the answer that he has worked so long for. I had so much fun absolutely devouring the story of Trey and Arella. Trey is a clueless cinnamon roll. I mean he googles date ideas, but he tries so hard. Arella has a traumatic dating history and she is rightfully slow to trust. Her experiences and story are unfortunately very relatable and will resonate with a lot of readers. These two have obstacle after obstacle placed before them but you will root for them to figure everything out. The supporting characters are so fun, Liz and Javina are the besties everyone needs and they are so important to Trey and Arella’s story. By the end of Ordinary Secrets you will be fully invested and probably want to throw something, like I did. Just make sure it’s something soft like a teddy bear or a pillow. Don’t throw your kindle and don’t worry book two will be out soon!! I can’t for you all to join me on this journey!

In a Zordinary world with powers comes an ordinary girl who will rock Mr Grants world!!! In Book 1 we get so much info into the Zordinary universe "Zordi’s"- have powers Ordis-no powers While Ordinaries don't know that Zordinaries exist. Trey is given the mission to investigale everything about Ordinary Arella. While his sole purpose was to find answers, it turns into an actual relationship. While Zordis need to stick to their “own kind" we will witness what happens throughout this new territory. So put your helmet on and join us for a ride into this universe that you won't regret reading!
I honestly couldn’t put this book down! I love the writing, the story the EVERYTHING!!!! If you love a slow burn this one is for you! 🖤🖤🖤🖤🔥 Trey has been added to the list of my book boyfriends! If only to find one in real life!

Trey lives in a world of Ordinary and Zordinary humans. He's one of the later, equipped with powers and knowledge of both parts of society around him - even though Ordinary's don't know his kind exists. Trey has been assigned a mission to try to help stop the same pointless violence that took his parent's from him. His task? Get close to an Ordinary that seems to be completely immune to Zordi powers. If they can figure out how she's blocking them, maybe they can use that power to destroy the Zordi's that took the only people he loved from him. The only problem is, she's as captivating as she is confusing.
*****
This was such an interesting concept for a novel and I loved that it's in a world we know, with small tweaks and insights that give us enough information to carry forward, but not to expose everything. Trey is fighting to not only figure out why his parent's were taken from him, but to also cease the pointless violence between Zordi elite. He's left in the dark about what they were doing and why, and his current mission opens him up to not only question what he knows of society, but also of those close to him, as well as himself.
There were moments when the leads felt younger in their thoughts than they were supposed to be and it took a bit to realize they were more established young adults. That being said, their actions (even if sometimes frustrating) absolutely fit for them being in their twenties. I really enjoyed seeing Arella slowly grow into her own strength after recovering from an abusive ex boyfriend, and use that growth to push back against Trey when he was being ridiculous.
I loved Trey for most of the novel, he was sheltered, naive in his own way, and he also was partially infuriating because I wanted to shake him and yell JUST COMMUNICATE. If anything, he adequately showcased a 20-something year old man obscenely well with how he assumed Arella could understand what he meant and felt without explicitly saying it, and I can absolutely continue seeing this biting him in the ass in future novels. It was frustrating, annoying and SO great to have a lead I loved and also desperately wanted to see grow.
The novel ends with an abrupt moment that sets us up for so much angst in the future novels as deceit, confusion, betrayal and miscommunication are left open-ended. I can't wait to see where the leads take us!
Thank you to the author for gifting me this book. All opinions are my own.
A Favorite Quote: “I thought I was the one calling the shots. Nope. It’s her. She’s destroying me, and I want her to keep doing it.”
Self-written Blurb: Trey Grant. A singer. A Harley rider. A millionaire. A man with a secret past. A Zordinary? Trey is just a guy with supernatural powers who has been tasked with discovering an important research question: Why does a random woman seem to be immune to all of the zordinary powers. He must investigate and uncover the truth by any means necessary. Naturally, formulating a plan to bump into her and make her fall in love with him so she spills all of her secrets is the best plan. What could possibly go wrong? What happens when the answers to which he seeks only materializes more questions. How is Arella Rance immune to the zordinary effects, and better question, is she aware that she has this immunity? Is she blind to the secret race and has no idea of their existence, as the rest of the world, or is something else awry?
What I enjoyed: What a ride! It has been a while since there was a twist I couldn’t predict. Indie author, Melissa Lam does a fantastic job at drawing you in from the beginning and doesn’t let you go until the very last word. While this story is in dual POV, I would say the majority of the book is from Trey’s point of view and the plot was driven by Trey’s character. I feel like this is unique, as usually we get a majority female perspective. It was definitely different and a breath of fresh air from the typical romance genre layout. It was easy to get submerged into this world as it was a well written blend of action, banter, spice and twists.
Any struggles?: I went into this expecting it to be a fantasy romance but I think it ended up reading more like a romance in a fantasy world. I struggled with Trey towards the end as he became a little overbearing and Arella really had to spell things out for him. But I also can appreciate that perhaps this was part of the learning curve of him not being able to sense her and her feelings.
Will I recommend and to who: I would recommend this book to any one who I know loves a knight in shining armor, over protective, who did this to you kind of MMC.
I’ve been waiting for so long to read this! Thank you Melissa Lam for gifting me a copy of Ordinary Secrets prior to release. All opinions stated are honest and entirely my own.
After being teased with blurbs, tropes, micro tropes, and excerpts, I was finally able to get my hands on Ordinary Secrets!
I thoroughly enjoyed the character development of Trey and Arella. Trey is portrayed as a bad boy, hard ass, “don’t f with me” kind of guy who absolutely melts at the hands of Arella. Arella is a broken, sweet girl, broken by an abusive ex-boyfriend, but shows strength in her aspirations of becoming a bakery owner, and willingness to move forward in her life. Minor characters definitely left an impact on me too; like I would totally want to have a best friend like Liz!
The plot was great! Trey is a Zordinary, a humanish being with powers, living in LA. Arella allegedly has immunity towards these Zordist powers and it’s Trey’s mission to figure out how she’s immune and if her powers can be used to protect the Zordis from Royal. As he inches towards attempting to complete this mission, he inadvertently falls in love, and this is where things get interesting.
The ending? Oh it had me saying “WTF?!” The cliffhanger killed me. I was pretty upset knowing it dropped off like that, but also relieved that the next book comes out shortly after the first so the waiting period isn’t too long!
This isn’t necessarily a negative, but it should be said since it’s advertised as such…this isn’t a fantasy! It’s a romance with fantasy elements (Zordi powers). Melissa even stated on her social media that she doesn’t have the imagination to conjure up a full fantasy world, but I felt I had to mention that since there are lots of romantasy readers out there and they’ll probably expect dragons or something like that 😂
All-in-all, I definitely recommend reading this book!
Thank you to author Melissa Lam for gifting me this book. I am voluntarily leaving a review.
This book! It is a ride on its own but the start of an even bigger one! First thing is I love a unique magic system. And although we haven't gotten all the information on Zordi abilities, the parts that have been revealed are really good. I look forward to reading more about it.
The second thing is that I love that this is mostly told from Trey's POV. While we still get to hear from Arella's side of things, most of it has been told from Trey's POV. I love the MCs. They both have their demons that they have to deal with but still gravitate towards each other anyway, even though it all starts with Trey's mission... get close to a woman named Arella and uncover the secret behind her immunity to my powers. He is such a softie and helpless romantic... he wants to find ways to get her to trust him for his mission but ends up falling for her even though he shouldn't.
The Zordi World series has two types of people, the Ordinary and the Zordinary. Ordinary people are just that... normal people. But the Zordinary have powers and live amongst the Ordinary who don't know they even exist. Arella is an Ordinary who doesn't know about powers or anything and is somehow immune to them. It's Trey's task to find out how. And the story takes off! But more than that... the ending of this first one is a super cliffhanger, so be prepared to want book two immediately because... WHAT!?
There is tension and some steamy spice to add to the mix. Some tropes/microtropes include: Forbidden Love Forced Proximity Fake Dating - but one sided "My girl" Forehead Kisses Slow Burn
I absolutely love where this story has started and I have my theories on what could happen in the next book so I look forward to reading Captured Immune. Great job Melissa!
Let me make one thing clear: I don’t finish books in a day unless they refuse to let me go. Ordinary Secrets did just that—wrapped me up in mystery, romance, and emotional whiplash, and didn’t loosen its grip until the final word.
This isn’t your typical “boy meets girl” story—it’s Zordie meets immunity, and from the moment Trey and Arella collide, the tension is magnetic. Trey’s abilities, his status, his secrets? They should’ve made Arella run. But instead, she draws closer, oblivious to the chaos that clings to him like smoke. The chemistry is intense, and rooted in so much more than just attraction. It’s layered with danger, denial, and that breathless pull you can’t explain.
The setup is beautifully twisted—Arella isn’t your damsel, and Trey isn’t just some tortured power wielder. It’s pop star meets “nobody”… except this nobody is powerful in her own right. That inversion? Delicious.
The world is grounded. Lam doesn’t overdo the magic or dump lore on your lap. Everything felt real. I could see the rooms, the streets, the damn teddy bear (which, by the way, I’ll never look at the same again).
And the emotions? Baby, I’m not okay.
My throat and stomach? Same thing now.
My heart? Somewhere between crushed and combusting.
And goodbye? Yeah... that word hits like a punch I didn’t see coming.
The best part? I scored the full trilogy in a special edition box with interactive goodies tied to the plot. Opening those items while reading? Chef’s kiss. It pulled me deeper into a world I didn’t want to leave.
📚 Do I recommend it? Absolutely. Without hesitation. 💯 Worth the emotional damage. 💔 Worth the goodbye.
Now excuse me while I clutch this book to my chest like a lifeline and dive headfirst into Book 2. Trey and Arella aren’t done with me yet… and I’m not done with them either.

I was given a copy of this book from the author. All opinions are my own.
With elements of urban fantasy, this is a solid first installment to what's shaping up to be an excellent trilogy. We get a romance frought with secrets that threatens to tear it apart and a hidden world of gifted humans (Zordis) living beneath our radar.
I liked the way we uncover layers of Trey's past with him. I wasn't as keen on his playboy ways and somewhat promiscuous lifestyle, but once he's actively dating Ari, he's not cheating, thankfully. I really liked Ari and her being cautious and reserved (a bit like me lol). She's very in tune with Trey and picks up (sees beyond) his bad-boy cover image. Slowly he begins to let guarded truths reveal to her. He can be a sweet goof sometimes too!
He has elemental abilities and it's neat how they differ for every Zordi. What makes it tricky is since he's so empathic sometimes that actually ends up controlling his decisions, but not with Arella. And that's part of her allure, he can be himself with her.
This book is very much focused on him being an undercover agent getting close to her trying to find details about her to explain her immunity to Zordi powers. Him coming to terms with feelings of love for the first time towards someone is crucial to his evolution. A reveal at the end I think I would've preferred to wait till book 2 (to allow more groundwork in their relationship to build in this one), but it definitely is an effective cliffhanger!
Highly reccomend starting this new series for lovers of star crossed romance, hidden abilities, secrets and mystery...it's a quick paced supernatural tinged drama that is sure to please!
I received a copy of this book from the author and am voluntarily leaving this review. All opinions are my own.
His mission was simple… until he fell for her.
This book has me in a chokehold. I picked it up and was immediately captivated. I read this book in 2 sittings and was not bored for a second. The world that this book is in is so fucking intersting. It's not so complicated that I feel like my brain will explode, but it is still unique and interesting. This world does not feel like any other fantasy/romantasy book I have read. This book isn't a romantasy but a contemporary romance with a good side of fantasy, which makes it work so well. I love the zordinary world, and I love learning about it. Everything feels so thought out, and I am sure there is foreshadowing that I have not noticed yet, but the world feels so well thought out, and everything feels like it has a purpose. I also love Trey. I just want to hug the man; he is such a green flag book boyfriend. Reading from Trey’s perspective is so fun, and I genuinely think this man's inner monologue is funny sometimes. I also love watching how his thought process changes, and with where I think this series goes, I am so excited to see more. I also relate to Arella on such a deep level; I love her. The ending is fucking cliffy to say the least but i have trust that it will be worth it. I was shocked when the book ended because I was so immersed in this world that I did not notice how much I had left. I am so excited for the rest of this trilogy. I have so many theories, and I think I would give anything to read the next book now.

It started out pretty good but the writing/prose felt a bit superficial and surface-level. A lot of times the descriptions (for settings, people, etc) were brief and didn't really give enough to know what was happening. I also noticed that in both POVs the character tended to over-explain what they meant, especially in Trey's POV--he ended up info dumping a good amount of background info for the secret agency and the power/magic system. It was a lot of telling instead of showing, and repetitive language that could have used another once-over from an editor or beta reader.
Also, the thing that really made me put this down instead of looking past the clunky sentences that popped up sometimes was the way Trey treated Arella less like a person and more like a prize to be won. I know he had his mission and was determined to succeed (partially for his uncle's pride/attention) but there was a few points where Arella actively said she wasn't interested in dating and Trey pushed *hard* back on that.
I don't care if he had some other goal, he should have backed off when she said she wasn't interested. There are a ton of other ways to get to know someone than to force them into a date after they agree to meeting up as friends. He kept pushing her boundaries over and over and they had a whole conversation where he pretended to be dumb about understanding women so she would give him a "hint" about what he could do to "win her over" as if her saying no is not a hard stopping point but a line than can be smudged and redrawn.
I don't mind a morally gray character but when this is supposed to be a romance, when the characters are supposed to care about each other genuinely, it's frustrating that the continued trope of the guy readers are supposed to swoon over pushing the boundaries of the woman he's attracted to. She owes him nothing, even if he has a mission, she does not owe him his success on that.
I was gifted this book from the author. Thank you, Melissa! I formed these opinions all on my own.
My first thing to say is… if you want something that you’ll fly through because you are sitting on the edge of your seat to figure out connections to all the things happening, this is for you!
I literally could not put this book down once I started because I wanted to figure out what was going to happen.
I really love the characters in this book. The humor, the banter, all the personalities.. *chef’s kiss*. There was a lot of diversity, and I loved that.
This book was SO well written. It was so easy to follow and read, and that’s a big thing for me. I never once had to be like, “wait? What did I just read?”, and have to go re-read over and over again.
The spice level was perfect for me. Not over the top, and not too little to where I wish there was more.
If I were to point out anything, and this is just a personal preference… I did feel like there was a lot of things left unfinished. I understand that it’s necessary to do that to have a good cliffhanger (and the ending was great), but throughout the book I kept wondering when one thing would close, but instead of that, just a whole bunch of things left me saying, “wait? What ended up happening with this certain thing or person?”. And I love the twists and turns, but for me, there were a lot of those not tied up when I feel like they could’ve been and left an even better cliffhanger.
All in all, this book was great. I highly recommend if you need something fun, easy, and perfectly paced. The modern day romance meets fantasy, and it was beautifully done.
Thank you to the author for gifting me a copy of this novel! I am voluntarily leaving a review and all opinions are my own.
With that out of the way… woah! GIRLIE! THAT ENDING!!!! OMG! This may be a bit backwards, but the intense cliffhanger that Ordinary Secrets leaves off on was not at all what I was expecting. I’m not sure if I’m mad, reeling for more, or both! An absolutely delicious read, from mystery to spice, I was consumed with this novel. I cannot wait to read the second novel.
Back to the beginning: chapter one started with a subtle hook, but unlike some novels, it offered a stable beginning and set up for the story to flow, which I quite liked. I really didn’t have many notes along the way as I read (I normally jot notes as I read a novel, however, I was simply too consumed by this one for that), but from what I did jot, I loved the character depth. Watching Arella heal was somehow healing for me as a woman who has dealt with an abusive partner/past. I use the word “watching” because this entire novel is described exquisitely, it practically played in my mind like a movie as I read—and don’t even get me started on feeling the characters emotions as they felt them. I was thoroughly swallowed whole by the story and characters. This novel is also very well written, which gave a nice “cherry on top” boost while reading.
Again, a big thank you to the author for giving me the opportunity to read this by gifting me a copy. I devoured this novel faster than most. I am definitely impatiently waiting for book two. I strongly recommend this novel! I’m picky with my 5 star ratings, but this novel more than earned it.
I am honored to have received a complimentary copy of this book. This review is voluntary and all opinions are my own.
THAT ENDING.
This book unexpectedly roped me in. It was an easy read and I became attached to the characters quickly! I enjoyed the progression of Trey and Arella's relationship. I have a feeling like I might know what's going on, but I think it's more likely that I'm going to get smacked in the face with a plot twist I never saw coming. The slow burn tension is amazing. The side characters are some of my favorites - both of their besties and the band! I loved how much Trey showed Arella respect when it came to what she was comfortable with. He was so genuinely concerned about her well-being. Despite his inability to read women without his power, he was sensitive to Arella's past and proceeded slowly, with so much caution. He wasn't a savior, she wasn't some super human. Their relationship was relatable and realistic. The only annoying thing was his inability to be honest with her about his secret mission (I know I know, it's a secret) and I wanted the story to progress a little faster. I also found it weird that his relationship with Liz was so important and deep but near the end he hardly talked to her about anything that was going on (perhaps there's a reason for this). I figured she'd be involved more, especially after certain events happened in her personal life.
Overall fantastic read!! I cannot wait to find out what happens in the next book - and lucky for me all three books of the trilogy are being released this year!!
I was given a copy of this book from the author. All opinions are my own.
When I say this book will take you on a ride, boy do I mean it. We start in a version of LA where there are people with supernatural gifts (Zordies) that live in secret among the normies (Ordies). Our MMC Trey is a hot af Zordie who also happens to be in the hottest band in the city. He is assigned a mission to get close to our FMC Arella (an Ordinary) and uncover the reason as to why she is immune to all Zordinary powers.
While their “friendship” started as means to accomplish a mission, things take a turn when Trey realizes that Arella is more than just a mark. She is strong, gorgeous, and affects him in ways he can’t explain. Is it just because he can’t sense her emotions as he can everyone else? What makes her so special?
This book had me glued from start to finish. I cursed my real life for getting in the way of me finding out what was next for Trey and Arella.
This book is heavier to the romance aspects than the fantasy, but the supernatural aspects were unique and left me with an equal amount of understanding and perplexity.
It is fast paced, full of excitement and will make you giggle and kick your feet. Probably make you steal all your significant others hoodies too…
I can’t wait to continue the series and see what happens next!
Stand out moments/tropes: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 🌶️🌶️🌶️ 🫦Tension 🥰He only feels peace when he’s with her ❣️Against all odds 💪🏼Healing trauma
LOVED this book! Wow, I started reading this on my flight and I flew through this book. When a book is the first thing I think about when I wake up in the morning and the last thing I think about when I go to sleep, I know it is good. That was the case with this book, I was on a work trip and all I wanted to do was read this book. I also had to do a 5k and had there not been 18,000 people walking in this event, I would have found a way to read this. This is the first book in what I think will be a 3-book series and I NEED book 2, like right now.
Spoilers!!!!! Proceed at your own risk!!!!
Seriously, spoilers…. Stop if you don’t want them….!!!
She is Trey’s assignment; he is not supposed to fall in love… but he does. Arella (if that really is her name) has a “power” that she doesn’t even know she has nor does she know it puts her life at risk. Trey is sent to find out how she can block the Zordi powers… he is told it is help protect them from the Royals that killed his family. He begins to realize that might not really be the full story but is it too late to save Arella? We are left with not knowing how things will turn out. Trey starts by being intrigued by Arella and wants to abide by his order and the laws put in place but the Zovernment but slowly he begins to fall in love with Arella. He wants to do everything to he can to protect her, but she doesn’t know the world she is really living in. Such a fascinating storyline, I truly cannot wait to read more of this series.
