I absolutely loved Eddie the Duckling by Molly Arbuthnott, and I highly recommend it! It’s such a sweet and heartwarming story that really stays with you.

The main character, Eddie, is a little duckling who’s always felt different from his siblings. He can’t quack or paddle like they can, and he’s always lagging behind. I think a lot of readers will relate to Eddie’s feeling of not fitting in.
But what I loved most about this book is how Eddie’s differences end up being his strength. When a hawk shows up and Eddie can’t warn his family, he gets so scared that his shaking creates a beautiful melody. That moment was such a surprise! It shows that even what we might think of as weaknesses can be powerful in unexpected ways. The hawk even gives Eddie a “lighting bolt of brown courage,” which made me smile. It’s a perfect reminder that we all have something special, even if it doesn’t look the same as everyone else’s.

The writing is just lovely, and the story kept me hooked from start to finish. It’s a simple, sweet read with a message that I think everyone, young or old, can appreciate: embrace your differences and find strength in being yourself.

The quirky moment with the hawk’s poop was funny and unexpected to me haha. Sometimes, even the awkward or embarrassing moments can lead to something good. Eddie’s family celebrating his courage at the end was such a joyful and uplifting part of the story, too.

Oh, I almost forgot about the illustrations! They're absolutely beautiful, and the colors were so mesmerizing that I found myself staring at them for a while, almost forgetting to finish my read!

Eddie the Duckling is a beautiful and inspiring book, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a story with a positive message about courage, uniqueness, and acceptance.

I'd like to thank Booktasters and author Molly Arbuthnott for this lovely read.

This is a children's story about Eddie the Duckling, who is different from his peers.
It was a short read that I really liked,
Even though the story was short, it was impactful, filled with them of acceptance and embracing our differences, which are important themes, especially for young audience.
The drawings were beautiful, too. They matched the ambiance of the book.
This story is highly recommended to read for young children,

It’s such an inspiring story! It reminds me of myself and introverted friends. We are all different and sometimes we have to try so hard to fit in. Eddie’s persistence is precious and encouraging. The paintings are colorful and warm. It’s a good book not only for kids but also for adults.

Eddie, the duckling that you are!

Yes, it is a story for children, but it sang to adults like me so beautifully too! You'll be reminded not to think small of yourself, even if you're born different. You just have to keep trying and do your best for in the end, you'll discover your purpose and your gifts that you can share with everyone.

On the other hand, this story also teaches us how to be supportive and kind to others, as shown by Eddie's family.

A calming and inspiring read, I love the illustration too! It's a great book, for children and adults both!

Eddie is a duckling different than others. He can't keep up, can't fly, can't quack... he's not as courageous as the other ducklings.
But when danger shows up, his time has come.
This beautifully illustrated cute story teaches us to never give up. Things always turn out alright at the end. It's about finding your voice and making it heard and appreciated, no matter how hard it seems - it's worth fighting. It doesn't matter if you're different. On the contrary, it can be very good.

Review posted on my blog The Writer's Library.

When I was a child, I often took comfort in stories about children who stood out from the crowd, those who needed to find their own place and where they felt they belonged. I’ve often – both as a child and as an adult – gravitated toward stories dealing with these types of ideas because I felt like I could understand where the characters were coming from.
Because of this, Molly Arbuthnott’s Eddie the Duckling hits a lot of right notes for me. At the same time, I think the story’s subjects are equally relatable for children, and I think it’s worth looking into them further.
Before I talk about how this story is built, let’s look at what it is about. Let’s get into it!
Summary
Eddie the duckling lives with his family in a pond but struggles to fit in with those he loves and finds himself searching for ways to keep up with his loved ones. However, when a hawk flies by, he realizes he needs not only keep up with them but protect them as well.
Will Eddie be able to help his family?
Thoughts
As I said, I find the message of this story deeply relatable and worth discussing. Eddie’s struggle to find his role in the world with his family trying to help him is so wholesome and sweet! I think protagonists like Eddie are incredibly important for children, because they show someone going through trials and tribulations that aren’t so easy to overcome. At the same time, though, Eddie has the support of his family as he tries to cope with his challenges. I love that he has individuals who care for him and want to see him get through this. It is very touching.
I want to pivot away from the story for a second to talk about the artwork. I love the illustrations in this story! The vibrant colors and playful imagery are beautiful, charming, and amusing! The color completely immersed me in the world of the story, to the point where I found myself looking for details even on pages where Eddie isn’t shown! I also love some of the more humorous situations depicted and what Eddie and his family are doing in them because the activities are very memorable! Overall, the artwork is one of the best aspects of this entire story for me!
Now that I’ve discussed those general thoughts, let’s move on to the story’s structure.
Structure
The way this story is built is fantastic, too! I love that the narrative is presented in the order in which things occur, and it is done so in a way that is easy to get behind. How Eddie’s journey progresses is perfectly clear. However, I also love that the progression of his thoughts and emotions are just as clear. The structure shows how his character is affected by the things that happen to him, and it is easy to understand how the conclusion is reached.
I love how the story is built, and I think it works perfectly given the theme and ideas presented.
Now that I’ve talked about the structure, let’s move on to the writing!
Writing
The writing also works well in concert with the artwork! It conveys exactly what Eddie is feeling in a way that made me feel for him. The tone of the writing shows exactly what the situation has done to Eddie’s confidence along with how others react to him. The mood and tone of the story convey Eddie’s true feelings regarding his situation.
I also like the setup of the situation and its ultimate payoff. Everything talked about in the beginning comes together in the end in a satisfying manner. This is because the writing guides the reader event by event, showing how the story reaches the payoff. The tone shifts from setup to payoff, but it is done so in a slow enough manner that it feels gentle and easy to get behind!
All in all, I think the prose works perfectly along with the art and shows how everything comes together!
Well, I think I’ve discussed everything I wanted to talk about. Let’s wrap this review up!
Conclusion
I really enjoyed this! The story is touching, the artwork is beautiful, and it’s easy to get wrapped up in Eddie’s journey! I think the message is important for children to hear and that Eddie’s plight will resonate with readers. For all these reasons, I will be awarding this story five stars.

"eddie the duckling" is such a fun and sweet story! i loved reading about eddie because he’s so different from the other ducklings, but that’s what makes him special. it was kind of sad to see him struggle at first. he couldn’t swim fast... couldn’t quack... and even got tangled in worms when he tried to eat! but i silently kept cheering for him because i wanted him to find out what made him amazing.

my favourite part was when eddie made music with his feathers. i didn’t expect it, and it made me so happy to see everyone stop and listen, even the scary hawk! the ending was funny too, with the hawk pooping on eddie’s head. that made me laugh. i also liked the pictures a lot; they're so colourful and beautiful.

this book makes me feel like it’s okay to be different and that i can find my own special thing if i keep trying, just like eddie. i think the children will love it too because it’s about never giving up, even when things are hard. eddie is the best! i will use this book for my volunteer activity too.

i think for improvement, the author could expand on eddie’s climactic moment, adding more details about his emotions and the reactions of those around him. developing the personalities of the supporting characters would create richer dynamics too and make eddie’s triumph feel even more meaningful. including additional motivational elements or dialogue could further reinforce the story’s message of perseverance. despite these minor shortcomings, "eddie the duckling" is a charming and meaningful story with great potential to become a cherished children’s classic.

This delightful little children's story is about a little duckling named Eddie. Eddie feels as though he's different from the other ducklings, and it makes him feel insecure. One day, when Eddie realises that he and the other ducklings are in a dangerous situation, he wonders what he can do to help. He realises that he has to be brave.

This is a story about courage, and facing your fears. The illustrations are cute, colourful and striking, and the story delivers an inspiring message. In particular, the last two sentences of the story resonated with me. I would have loved this book as a child, but even while reading it as an adult, Eddie was a character who went straight to my heart.

This is a heartwarming short story to read with young children, and I think it will make them smile.

Thank you to the author for sending me a copy.

One of my life's mantras is to “never let go of my inner child", and I can candidly say my inner child is blissed out after reading Eddie's story.
Besides how entertaining I found the short, compact piece, I've taken a well-understood lesson in perseverance, courage, inner strength and individuality. The best thing about Eddie for me is how despite all odds, he continues to try. His journey reminds us—especially children—that there's great reward in effort and persistence, and that our true strengths lie in the things that make us different; even when the world around us takes a while to adjust to these differences. The lights at the end of the tunnel are closer and brighter than we assume.
I recommend this glorious picture book to all and sundry, and can't wait to read it to my own little uns someday!

I read this book the moment I got it. I loved the drawing, due to bright colors and the simple yet encouraging story it tells. It's a story about never giving up and always giving it your all, even when things do not go your way. I love the encouragement it gives young people who read it. It shows even in the darkest moments there is light. All we have to do is believe, and keep trying. This story is filled with hope and encouragement as Eddie the Duckling learns to build up his hope, he is taught a very powerful lesson. The lessons is never quit. I gave this story a 5 out of 5 due to its fulfilling message. I encourage all those with young children to read this to them for it will give them hope. Thank you.

An excellent story of finding your hidden talents against all odds.

Despite being slower, not so brave and clumsy, Eddie was able to save his family in an amazing and unexpected way.

Apparently, he has a good heart and wants to help others.

The support given by his parents and siblings was very important for Eddie.
He felt encouraged and motivated to go on and not give up.

The story sounds quite metaphorical and is very thought-provoking.

The language is somewhat poetic, the illustrations are colorful and enhance the storyline.

Recommended to children and teenagers.

Cute book, nice for kids, my brother is 7 years old and he liked the story but was a bit scared of the drawings and the color scheme. However the story itself is nice. Its about a little duckling who has always felt different in a silly way. Slower, goofier and always getting into troubles. The language is easy and helpful for those who wanna learn English or for kids.

Eddie the Duckling is a charming children’s book that offers a fresh take on celebrating differences, much like a modern Ugly Duckling. The story follows Eddie, a unique duckling who learns to embrace his quirks, and it warmed my heart to see such a positive message delivered in a fun, engaging way. The colorful illustrations are a standout, bringing Eddie’s pond adventures to life with vibrant energy that captivated my 5-year-old. My favorite moment was when Eddie helps a shy turtle join the group, showing kindness and courage. This book is perfect for parents reading to kids aged 3-7 or teachers looking for a story to spark discussions about self-acceptance in the classroom. A delightful read that left us smiling!
