A great novel of secrecy and destruction. Jonathan Hopgate hopes to better his life, and reclaim his ancestral home, when he marries the sickly Lily. Poor Lily hopes for a life of romance with Jonathan but all that she offers is revulsion. Agnes Slane appears to offer Jonathan what he really desires but can their love withstand the corruption of High Withens? A great, vivid, sensual read.

One of my favourite books. Found myself sucked into the heat, the sickness, the gothic darkness until I found myself gasping for breath.
