Grace Peregrine had only one more year of high school left before she’d be off to college where she could start a normal life, a life where no one knew her as ‘pumpkin’. But a month into her senior year a suspicious package shows up at her front door and soon her life is out of control. After a fire leaves Grace and her sister, Amy, orphaned, they move in with the wealthy Greene family. There, Grace could feel at home if it wasn’t for Wesley Greene, the boy who rendered her an outcast. He’s supposed to be off at college but keeps stopping by unexpectedly. That all becomes trivial after Grace overhears the fire marshal tell Mrs. Greene that the fire was set on purpose making Grace question if there is a connection between the fire and the two strange bumps that recently appeared on her back. The only solace from the constant worry and questions, and Wesley’s prying eyes, comes when Justin St. George, the cutest boy in school starts paying her attention. But when the bumps grow into bright red wings, and two mysterious men follow Grace home from school, she sets out to find the truth no matter what the cost.
I've been writing since the second grade when my teacher and family told me how good my story about the panda who had lost his spots was.
I went to Radford University, where I majored in English with a concentration in business and technical writing and minored in media studies. The last part was encouraged so I'd be able to get a real job.
I live in Southwest Virginia with my husband, daughter and five animals: a cats, two dogs and two guinea pigs.
Other than writing, I enjoy reading and crafting. I sew and crochet.
I wish I had a green thumb, but unfortunately for my plants I don't. Truth is, I'd rather read a book than work in my flowerbed.
Let me start off by saying this author is clearly pretty darn good. This book is not something I'd ever dream that I'd actually read. It's just....totally far off different.
I'm not a science fiction/fantasy reader. I don't know why I picked this book up to begin with. Wait, yes I do... It was free.
Anyway, as I said this is science fiction/fantasy. (It's fantasy. I just don't read sci-fi much either.) What makes this book fantasy? Spoiler alert: (Though not really, because Goodreads says it too.) The main character, Grace, grows WINGS! Yeah, I know. Weird right? Totally a bummer thing to happen to a senior in high school too. Yikes.
One day a strange looking plant is delivered to Grace's father, but she keeps the plant for herself because she is just so captivated by it. The next day while she's at school, her house burns down and they can't find her father.
So Grace and her sister Amy move in with the Greens, a wealthy family much different than the one they're used to. Grace hates their son Wesley, who started a nickname for her when they were younger and would constantly make fun of her. She also is worried that he's trying to get in the way of her and a boy named Justin.
Nope, it's not going to be Wesley. It's going to be the WINGS YOU JUST GREW! Haha, yeah. I saw it coming, but it still surprised me when it happened. But, I kept reading.
You get to read all about how she learns to adjust to her wings, how she keeps it a secret from everyone, and what the wings might mean about her past and her future.
It was actually pretty interesting, I'll admit it. I don't want to say too much more because I don't want to give anything away.
Firebird by Dana Rose Bailey was a pretty good read. It captivated me from the beginning, and stayed engrossed all the way through to the end. My only complaint was the time gaps. Something exciting would happen then a new chapter would start with a large time gap, leaving you hanging as to what happened in between. This happened a few times. All in all though I really enjoyed this book!
I received the book for free through Goodreads Giveaways, which had no effect on my review.
This book was completely engaging and kept me up later than it should have. I really enjoyed the authors style and storyline. Will definitely read book 2!
