Some books go beyond storytelling—they leave a mark, shift your perspective, and invite you to see the world through a different lens. Unplanned Journey is one such book. It’s written with such raw honesty and emotion that you feel like a part of Insiya Shakir’s story, walking beside her through every moment.

Insiya opens the door to her past, painting a picture of a young woman full of dreams, navigating the joys of marriage and the excitement of becoming a mother. But life has its own plans. Her journey is one of immense challenges, heartbreak, and the kind of resilience that can only be born from love.

What makes this book truly stand out is its unflinching authenticity. Insiya doesn’t shy away from the difficult truths—she speaks of society’s ignorance, the emotional and physical toll of raising a special-needs child, and the often overwhelming guilt and burnout that accompany it. Yet, even amid the struggle, her story is interwoven with hope, strength, and the determination to keep moving forward.

Reading this reminded me of my interactions with children with special needs during my school days. Those experiences taught me profound lessons about kindness, inner strength, and the beauty of individual journeys. Insiya’s reflections brought those memories flooding back, reminding me how life has a way of teaching us through the most unexpected encounters.

Unplanned Journey is a source of comfort for anyone facing life’s toughest challenges. Insiya Shakir offers not only her story but also a safe space to process, reflect, and find hope. This book is a powerful reminder of the resilience within us all and the incredible capacity of love to endure even the hardest trials. A heartfelt, inspiring read that will touch your soul.

"Unplanned Journey" by Insiya Shakir is a heartfelt memoir and parenting guide that delves into the life of a family raising a special-needs child. The book takes readers on an emotional journey, from the author’s marriage to the birth of her two children, and the life-changing challenges that followed.

The birth of the author’s second child, Ali, was especially tough. As a medical student, reading this book gave me a deeper understanding of the parents' perspective in such cases. It paints a vivid picture of the overwhelming experiences parents face when their newborn requires special care, leaving them feeling helpless except for relying on prayers and hope. The power of faith, prayer, and reiki, as described in the book, shines through and brings a sense of healing to their story.

The journey of raising a special-needs child demands an extraordinary amount of strength and resilience from parents. The misunderstandings, societal pressure, and the need to handle everything perfectly can be incredibly taxing. The book highlights the complications faced during Ali’s delivery, as well as the challenges that followed in his growth and therapies.

The pandemic further disrupted their routine, making it harder for Ali to continue with his therapies. Yet, amidst the struggles, it also provided the family with something invaluable—time. Time to grow closer, to bond as a family, and to support one another in ways they hadn’t before.

One of the book’s strongest messages is the toll this journey takes on the mother. Often seen as the backbone of the family, mothers face not only the pressures of caregiving but also the negativity and judgment from society, which fails to understand the nuances of raising a special-needs child. The author emphasizes the importance of self-care and nourishment for mothers, who need to recharge and care for themselves to better support their families. This reminder feels powerful and much needed.

"Unplanned Journey" isn’t just a story of struggles; it’s also a tale of hope, love, and resilience. It sheds light on the importance of understanding neurodiversity and the empathy required from society. For me, this book was both enlightening and deeply moving. I highly recommend it to readers who want to explore the emotional and practical aspects of parenting a special-needs child, as well as to those in the medical field to gain insight into the human side of such cases.

"There is a world within a world that often escapes the notice of ordinary families, simply because they haven't had the chance to understand it". Unplanned Journey by Insiya Shakir (Bootwala) helps us get a beautiful yet necessary insight on these special families.
Through this book Insiya has penned her entire journey on raising a neuro-divergent (special needs) child. In an attempt to not only provide a positive impact to the families who are going through similar experiences but also by providing practical advice learned through her personal experiences.

Like any other parent Insiya had been ecstatic about welcoming her second child and being a happy, healthy family. But unfortunately, her second born, Ali, suffered brain damage during birth due to unforeseen circumstances. As expected everything turned upside down for Insiya's family. But instead of being stuck in her own sadness & guilt Insiya makes up her mind to provide the best opportunities she can to Ali, so that he can lead a happy and comfortable life.

From listening to Ali's doctors and therapists instructions & advice, to learning to trust her instinct and putting her faith in the universe, Insiya's perseverance had come to fruition in each of Ali's small yet significant milestones. Ali's milestones are a true testament of hardwork from his side, his family's font alongside wonderful teams of medical professionals.

One of the most wonderful things about this book, is that not only Insiya sheds light on the toll it takes on her not only physically, but also emotionally and mentally. She shares her struggle in juggling her role as caregiver parent for Ali, to be able to spend time with her elder son and give equal importance to her relation with her husband and the horrific realisation of losing herself. But also stretches the importance of asking for help especially in a society where women are taught that taking help as a mother easily equates to bringing a bad mother. But Insiya shares her journey of asking for help, having a self care routine, and doing everything to not lose herself anymore. Because an empty cup never pours. Which I think will help a lot of mothers. Insiya highlights the importance of letting go of the societal pressure of being "perfect" instead being the truest & happiest version of herself and her family.

The book is written really well. As someone who is not too inclined to read non-fiction, I was able to easily follow the book because of its writing being simple, straightforward and engaging. And this easy flow of storytelling style draws in the readers right away.

Whether you are a parent looking for some guidance and hope or you are a reader looking for some real life story of triumph over adversity, this book is what you all have been lacking. Unplanned Journey reminds us that no matter how tough the journey is right now, there is always place for hope, growth and sunshine waiting at the end of darkness.

“There is a world within a world that often escapes the notice of ordinary families, simply because they haven’t had the chance to understand it. This is the world of special needs.”

In the ordinariness of life, we often fail to notice the extraordinary specially-abled beings around us. Unplanned Journey by Insiya Shakir (Bootwala) serves as a reminder to appreciate these blessed individuals.

Insiya pens a heartfelt memoir, taking us on an incredible journey of raising a special needs child. Providing solace to the parents of special needs children, the book offers practical advice rooted in real-life experiences. At the same time, it extends beyond a simple parenting guide, offering a profound lesson on trusting your instinct and taking that leap of faith in the face of uncertainty.

The book chronicles Insiya’s experience of raising her second child, Ali. Ali suffered brain damage at the time of his birth. Naturally, Insiya and her family’s lives took an unexpected turn. Instead of losing faith and being stuck on ‘why me’, Insiya resolves to provide her son with the best life possible, supplementing strength from prayers and manifestations.

Ali’s small triumphs as a neurodivergent is a testament to the transformative power of therapy, speaking to anyone struggling with mental health issues.

Moreover, as Insiya juggles managing Ali’s special needs, caring for her elder son’s well-being, spending quality time with her husband, and handling daily chores, she realizes that burnout and exhaustion is real. Thus, offering a refreshing perspective on the lives of women, who stretch themselves to provide a perfect life for their family. Driving home the fact that one can’t pour from an empty cup.

As someone who struggles to read non-fiction, I found the book to be an easy yet profound read due to its simple and engaging writing. Its seamless storytelling instantly draws readers in.

Whether you're seeking guidance, or simply a moving story, the book delivers on all fronts. It beautifully captures the strength of the human spirit, emphasizing the importance of savoring each step along life’s odyssey.

I believe parenting a special-needs child is a learning that needs patience and resilience. This journey teaches you the true essence of unconditional love.

Insiya Shakir, in her memoir, 'Unplanned Journey', describes her life essentially after marriage. She describes her second pregnancy with Ali more significantly than her first. From labor to a complicated delivery to the birth of Ali, Shakir pens, her experience is beyond honest and raw. Born with Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy during birth, a condition where there's less oxygen supply to the brain and leads to delayed development. Shakir's second child was admitted to the nearest NICU and kept in observation.

Through her book, Shakir pens a heartwarming and tough journey of being the mother of a special needs child. She talks about the smallest of things from repeated therapies and hospital appointments for her child to her personal emotional turmoil as she juggles with giving time to herself, her husband, and her first child.
Shakir shares how inclusive and awkward she had become socially without realization, forgetting get-togethers and gatherings.
For most mothers, family becomes their utmost priority, and they tend to just get emerse in this life. But, the author practiced mental exercises of visualization that brought into her positive attitude and calmness to deal with the situations with strength and resilience.

A book like 'Unplanned Journey' takes a lot of guts to write as you visit the untalked memory lane and speak out to the world that needs the help. Insiya Shakir's writing is pure informative and simple. She describes her observations and learnings in a very fathomable way. Even the procedures from the hospital, her child's reaction to environment changes described is not from an author's perspective but viewed from a mother's eyes. Reading 'Unplanned Journey' makes you feel bittersweet, and you realize that her intention to write this book is for helping others in the same situation.

Overall, 'Unplanned Journey' is a must-read book for anyone who seeks strength during tough times and for someone who loves reading personal accounts

If you or someone you know has just begun caring for a special-needs child and feels scared, confused, and lost, this book is for you. Insiya Shakir has poured her heart and soul into writing it, sharing a story that is both raw and honest.

Unplanned Journey begins right at the start of Insiya's life-changing experiences. We learn about her transition from being a single, independent woman to a married woman uprooting her life to support her husband abroad, and eventually experiencing the joys of motherhood for the first time. Then comes the heartbreaking chapter of her difficult second birth and its far-reaching consequences, not only for her newborn son but for the entire family.

Unfortunately, as Insiya points out, our society often perceives special-needs individuals as "different" due to a lack of knowledge and understanding. She also highlights the importance of financial planning, sharing how her family made it work. The book doesn't shy away from discussing the guilt, burnout, and depression that can come with such challenges, as well as the strain these difficulties can place on a marriage.

This is a short, quick read. Insiya writes clearly and beautifully, managing to pack a wealth of personal anecdotes, valuable information, and practical tips into a brief yet impactful book. For parents and guardians of special-needs children, this book will feel like a warm, comforting hug.

A book that emanates resilience, self-belief, and dedication. "Unplanned Journey" by Insiya Shakir is a heartfelt story of a special needs family. While the book delves into personal accounts from the writer's life, it offers in-depth knowledge and serves as a guide for those experiencing similar challenges.

I appreciate how the writer mentions her early life in the first chapter, providing an account of how she met her husband, Hussain, and describing her life prior to marriage and her bond with her family.
Later we are introduced to Shamoil - her eldest son and her experience with the first pregnancy. The narration continues and we meet Ali - the youngest child who lives up to his name of courage and strength. Facing all the battles that comes along as a special need kid.

The chapters are extremely informative yet concise, making them both insightful and to the point. One chapter, titled "Creating Your Own Toolbox," is particularly equipped with pointers and tools a parent needs to guide, comfort, and empower themselves for various degrees of help and support. It emphasizes the importance of looking after one's health first in order to care for their child and discusses the delegation of work and how it helps ease one's burden without overwhelming them.

A follow-up chapter, titled "Crafting a Fulfilling Life for All," offers valuable knowledge to help balance professional and personal life.

There is also a thought-provoking segment in the book that discusses planning another child for special needs parents. The ending of the book highlights their current life, serving as a beacon of hope to everyone.

All in all, this book is a complete guide and fulfils its promises.

Book Review: Unplanned Journey by Insiya Shakir

Unplanned Journey is a deeply personal and eye-opening memoir that sheds light on the realities of parenting a child with special needs. Insiya Shakir shares her experiences with raw honesty, making this book not just a story but a guide for parents navigating similar challenges.

The book beautifully captures the psychological toll of raising a child with special needs, the self-blame, guilt and strain it puts on relationships, especially with a partner. It also highlights the importance of therapy, not just for the child but for the parents as well.

One of the most impactful aspects of Unplanned Journey is how it raises awareness. As a society, we often offer casual sympathy to special needs parents without truly understanding the constant struggles they face to provide their child with a near-normal life. This book challenges that mindset and works toward breaking stigmas around special needs children.

Written in simple, easy-to-understand language, it’s an empowering and helpful piece of literature, a blueprint for parents looking for guidance, support, and hope. It also touches on how COVID brought many people together, offering a different perspective on community and resilience.

More than just a memoir, Unplanned Journey is a must-read for everyone, not just parents of special needs children, but anyone who wants to understand, support and create a more inclusive world.

Reading this memoir felt like watching a biopic, so deep and honest.

This book works not only as a guide but also offers a practical and positive approach to raising a child with special needs. This book beautifully captures the journey of families with special needs children. I loved how the author shared her personal experiences, including all the ups and downs, joys and sorrows, achievements and vulnerabilities. It felt like I was living this journey with her, celebrating every little achievement of Ali. Her struggles and her belief were truly inspiring. This book offers much-needed hope and support to families facing similar challenges.

Not just for families, I believe this book is for everyone. It helps us understand the struggles of special needs children and teaches us how to treat them with equality and kindness, without making them feel out of place or upset. It provides valuable insights that everyone can benefit from.

I appreciated how the author gave equal care and attention to her other child. It must have been exhausting to care for a special needs child while ensuring the other child didn’t feel neglected. She managed her responsibilities beautifully. It was also heartwarming to see the support she received from her partner, friends, and family. I admired her courage to distance herself from negative influences when needed. Separating ourselves from negativity is so important.

Shamoil's quiet support and understanding were also commendable.

This book is a perfect read for parents of special needs children and for anyone who wants to better understand and support them.

As a physiotherapist who has worked with multiple special needs children, I was completely hooked on reading this bittersweet book. I highly recommend Unplanned Journey to all mothers and families of special-needs children.

This book serves as a detailed guide from an experienced mother to other parents.

Author Insiya Shakir writes about her journey starting from a normal pregnancy, a scary complicated delivery, and the tough challenges faced after Ali was born into our world. Ali was diagnosed with Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy at birth, a condition where reduced oxygen supply to the brain leads to delayed milestones.

She narrates the tough times her family faced and all the emotional turmoil she went through. Her aim is to guide families in understanding how to navigate the journey of raising a child with special needs, managing their long treatment process, and setting realistic expectations along the way.

Her simplicity in describing many of the difficult medical treatment  terms like Neuro-Developmental Therapy, Sensory Integration Therapy, Neuroplasticity, Speech Therapy, Augmentive and Alternative Communication — is amazing. She describes each treatment in simple words for any individual to understand and explains the positive improvements observed in Ali after undergoing the various treatment.

I love how the author narrates about the Art of Visualization and Law of Manifestation— [something i never thought i would be reading about.] She wrote many real life examples  of how she manifested positivity in her child's health and other areas of her life.

Toward the end, she shares some valuable tips and her very own special toolkit that supports her journey. She provides guidance for parents on choosing the best school, importance of balancing love and attention to both siblings, managing burnout, overcoming social stigma, handling negativity and distancing themselves from negative people and situations.

UNPLANNED JOURNEY by Insiya Shakir.

A journey of hope, perseverance & love, this story aims to highlight the strength & potential within each child & to remind the parents & caregivers that they are not alone in their journey.
In the beginning of the book itself, we are greeted with a disclaimer;
This book is not intended to replace professional medical advice or treatment plans, but rather to complement them by offering a personal perspective & a sense of community.
I am so glad, the author and/or the publisher put it right in the beginning.

Next, there's a heartfelt letter for the reader which instantly connected me to the author.

"Looking back, becoming a stay-at-home mom turned out to be the best decision for me. It allowed me to fully experience every precious moment & watch Shamoil grow."-
I could so relate to these lines & the feelings & emotions.

The part about childbirth, preferring a normal delivery to c-section, the curiosity to know the gender of the baby after delivery, the time he took to cry immediately after delivery, the going in & out of consciousness on the operation table, first time seeing your baby and reading a book during pregnancy & matching the milestones post pregnancy, self blaming at the drop of a hat are so so relatable to me. Then the section on Energy Healers, it's something even I have started believing in, recently. Visualization is definately a very effective approach but difficult to practice during exceptionally hard times.

The writing is in simple english & the narrative is very engrossing.

In this book, she has shared some personal anecdotes, struggles & strategies that helped her overcome her darkest thoughts & feelings. She has also mentioned how another family who had transversed a similar situation gave them hope & reassurance.
It also discusses how things change after the birth of a second child, the rapport with the first born, with the husband & for self care, basically managing quality time in all the areas. Another thing which is discussed is the behaviour of society towards such children & their parents.

My favourite part of the book is chapter 10, Turning into the Magical Universe, where The Law Of Attraction is discussed. It's something I thoroughly believe in & have seen magic happen. Also I loved chapter 11, Creating Your Own Toolbox. I have adored Michelle Obama & Oprah Winfrey for the being a source of inspiration always.
Chapter 13 gives a special focus to a parent of a special-needs child. The author has also mentioned books for reference that helped her in her journey.

I liked the cover & it's colour scheme, the paper quality is good & each chapter begins with a flowery design which looks very inviting & pleasing to the eyes.
To conclude, I would say this book is anything but full of hope. I recommend it especially for someone going through a similar situation but it can be read by anyone who wants to experience the real life story of a warrior mother & her child.

I just finished reading this book and it's been a really emotional/rollercoaster ride for me. The book is about the author's own journey as a mom to a very cute special-needs child, Ali. She wrote the full journey of how she was married & gave birth to her two beautiful children.

I loved this book because of how honest & open the author is about her experiences: the good, the bad, and the really tough times. She shares her story in a way that's easy to understand, even for someone like me who doesn't know much about medical stuffs.

What I really loved the most is how she talks about the importance of visualization, gratitude, and manifestation: a girl like me who believes in all these powerful things, or a girl who practices this on a daily basis, is what I connected with the most in the book. I loved how she used these techniques to help her son, & guess what, it actually worked for them, just like it always works for me.

What also really touched my heart was how the author talks about the importance of family & love. Even when things seemed really hopeless, she found strength in her faith, her family, & her own resilience. She also learned many new things & taught us everything she learned from her experiences. It was really heartwrenching to read some parts.

The book also made me realize how much we take things for granted and how important it is to be kind and understanding towards people who might be going through tough times. Because we don't know about the other person's struggles, what they've been through. We shouldn't judge someone before knowing their complete story.

The book is for the parents/families who are going through very tough times in their life, especially those finding it hard to deal with a special-needs child. It was about the transformation phase of Ali: from his birth to his present life. And also for both parents, how they learned everything and grew more as a family.

This book offers numerous valuable tips for maintaining a healthy & happy family especially if you're facing specific issues. Remember, when faced with challenges, people with negative attitudes may surround you, but to stay strong and move forward, you must ignore others if their negativity is draining your energy. Always trust your instincts, and amidst the hustle and bustle, never forget to prioritize yourself.

Overall, this is a book that everyone should read, especially if you're interested in understanding what it's like to be a parent to a special-needs child. I learned a lot from this book, and I think you will too. So, go ahead and read it; I'm sure you won't regret it!

Unplanned Journey by Insiya Shakir is a heartfelt account of life as part of a special-needs family. The book offers more than just a glimpse into the daily realities of raising a special-needs child—it also shows the emotional and societal pressures parents face, particularly mothers, who are often seen as the anchors of their families.
The author not only talks about the impact on her family but also bravely shares the misunderstandings and judgments she endured, shedding light on how these challenges took a toll on her mental and emotional well-being. She also highlights the importance of self-care, reminding mothers that they need to nurture themselves to better care for their families. This empowering message is both timely and essential, that will resonate deeply with readers.
What sets this story apart is its perspective. It isn’t written as an outsider’s observation but as a deeply personal narrative from a mother who has lived every moment of the journey.
The author’s vivid descriptions of medical procedures, therapy sessions, and her son Ali’s responses to his surroundings are infused with authenticity and emotion. We can feel the weight of her struggles and the depth of her love in every word.
Some of the most poignant moments come when the author reflects on the impact of the pandemic. The disruption of Ali’s therapy sessions and routines added to their challenges, but the enforced togetherness also brought an unexpected gift—time. This period allowed the family to grow closer, to bond in ways they hadn’t before, and to strengthen their support for one another. Amidst the chaos, this silver lining shines brightly in the narrative.
The book also emphasizes the healing power of faith and prayer. This story is imbued with resilience and optimism, illustrating how she and her family drew strength from their belief systems and each other. Her journey will remind readers that even in the darkest moments, love, faith, and hope can light the way forward.
Unplanned Journey is not merely a memoir about raising a special-needs child. It is a celebration of love, resilience, and hope, shedding light on the importance of understanding neurodiversity and fostering empathy within society. It also serves as a gentle guide for parents navigating similar challenges, offering practical insights and emotional solidarity.
Whether you are a parent, caregiver, or simply someone seeking a deeper understanding of the complexities of caregiving for a neurodivergent child, this book offers a profound and moving perspective. It is a story that will linger in your heart long after the final page is turned.

BOOK REVIEW - First of all I would like to give a standing ovation to all the parents and special needs families for their love and support they give to their children in this world. Speaking to the author personally made me feel her strong and resilient personality, a strength of sword like mother and ofcourse an emotional author. Reflecting one's own flaws yet restructuring your life and accepting the fate of God, narrating it to the world of judgements ; is something amazing the author has done through this book "Unplanned Journey ~ the heartfelt story of a special -needs family".

When the author wrote;
"As a mother of a special needs child, I've learned to harness the power of prayer and affirmations to stay strong and resilient" , she definitely impacted many lives.
The author portrayed strong faith in God stating "My prayers are a daily reminder that I'm not alone, that a higher power is guiding me and my child."

This book is a challenging task as a reader as it takes us through a journey of "Why me?" To " Demonstration of Trust " as a resilient mother.

The author truly connected with her audiences through these lines.
- "I am capable and strong."
- "My child is unique and precious."
- "I trust in my ability to care for my child."
- "We will navigate challenges together, with love and courage."

These affirmations helped people to stay focused, positive, and empowered, even on the toughest days.

By combining her prayer and affirmations, she found a sense of peace, hope, and determination that carries me through the journey of raising her special needs child."

Having another child , a trip to lonavala, the lockdown series are a proof that they didn't just survive but are living through their life God has given them.
The book enlightens the readers with emotional preparedness, genetic testings , social support, siblings bond and financial considerations of their lives.

Every reader connected with the author in her last chapter "How this book came to me".
While I thought the special needs children are " Taare Zameen par" , this book portrayed that the supporting hands of these souls are truly stars of this planet!

RECOMMENDED - Every special needs families must read this.

Insiya Shakir’s Unplanned Journey is a poignant and deeply moving memoir that chronicles her life as a mother raising a child with special needs. With unflinching honesty, the author shares her transformative journey, recounting her joys, struggles, and triumphs as she navigates the unexpected challenges of parenting her son, Ali.

The narrative is beautifully structured, offering a window into Insiya’s life before and after Ali’s birth. This contrast enables readers to appreciate the depth of her transformation—from a young woman with a dream job and a picture-perfect life in Dubai to a resilient mother redefining her path. Her ability to find strength in adversity and her unwavering dedication to her children make this story both inspiring and relatable.

The memoir captures the emotional complexities of parenting a special needs child, including societal perceptions, personal sacrifices, and the sheer grit required to balance the needs of her family. Insiya’s candor in sharing her struggles and triumphs makes the book deeply personal yet universally relevant. Her emphasis on awareness, acceptance, and resilience resonates powerfully, offering lessons not just for parents of special needs children but for everyone.

What sets this book apart is its inclusivity and balance. Insiya ensures that her other child feels equally loved and valued, demonstrating the delicate art of parenting amidst extraordinary circumstances. "Unplanned Journey" is a memoir. While reading this book, I felt many emotions, such as happiness, sadness, and anger. Insiya was living a simple and happy life, but a turn of events turned her life upside down. However, her belief and love for her children made the impossible possible. Ali fought back for his life, and he won; in the future, he has many more battles to face, and his parents also play a major role in his tough situation.

Reading about Ali's birth was very emotional, especially for Insiya. We can never truly compare that feeling, and I really appreciate how she became strong for her children. All her emotions and struggles show how a family with special needs feels in that moment.

I really hate it when people blame Insiya for her children's situation. I was like, seriously? We are living in the 21st century, and people are thinking so backward about these types of situations. It is disheartening to see how people can be inhumane, using harsh words against Insiya in her struggling situation.Sometimes I think about why people hide their special needs children. They don't support them, but by saying and showing awkard behavior, they create a tougher situation for the children and their parents. I really appreciate how she manages to balance both children because they are different from each other, and their needs are also different. In every situation, she makes time for Shamoil, and she doesn't decide his future for him.

In all this, one more person who plays a major role is Insiya's husband. This situation is also tough for him, and he struggles in his own way. However, all of Ali's therapy needs money, and he is the breadwinner who makes it possible for Ali to access all the therapy. It's a harsh truth, but it's true that taking care of a special needs child requires more resources. I really appreciate Hussain as well; he stood by Ali.

I really hope all your struggles will turn into a beautiful life journey.I am really thankful for and appreciate this book because people need more of these types of books; they need to know they are not alone in their journey.

If you're a parent, particularly one raising a child with special needs, Unplanned Journey will speak to you on a personal level. It’s comforting to know that someone else understands the struggles, the tears, and the small victories that make up everyday life. Insiya’s honest storytelling offers a sense of camaraderie for those who often feel like they're going through this journey alone. Her reflection on her experiences, like when she says, “The journey is long, but the love is endless,” is both soothing and empowering. It reminds you that despite the challenges, there’s always something to hold onto - your family’s love. She also openly discusses the challenges of navigating a world that is often unaccommodating, but she also highlights how Ali's life has been full of joy and progress, thanks to the love and support he has received.
Now, Ali is thriving in his own way, and the family has learned to embrace his unique journey. The author’s insights into adapting to life with a special-needs child provide valuable takeaways such as finding beauty in small milestones and advocating for greater awareness in society. Through Insiya’s words, readers are reminded that even when life is unexpected, there is hope, growth, and joy in the unplanned moments.

As someone who has a close friend raising a special-needs child, I found myself deeply connected to this book. It gave me a clearer understanding of my friend’s struggles and triumphs, and how I, as a friend, can be more supportive. Insiya’s insights on how friends and family can show up and help in meaningful ways truly opened my eyes. This book has helped me reflect on how we can all contribute to making life a little easier for those walking a similar path. It’s a heartfelt reminder that empathy and small gestures can go a long way in supporting families in need.

Unplanned Journey by Insiya Shakir is an emotional, heartfelt and informative memoir that helps you peek into the life of raising a special needs child. But it’s also much more than that. It’s a story of resilience, love and transformation that touched me on so many levels.⁣

At its heart, the book is about her experience as a special needs mother- how she journeys into new lands of the unknown, how she finds incredible power in adversity and how that teaches her to relish the small victories that make this trip worth it. The kind of love, patience and audacity to fight for her child is just incredible. Her story comes out with raw honesty which makes it not only relatable but very empowering for parents/caregivers who are in this journey.⁣

What I loved most about this book was how this journey not only alters her motherhood but her position as a wife and a woman trying to find herself. The advice on manifestation, positive thinking, law of attraction, affirmations and gratitude was so strong. A little mindshift can do so much to make the bad times better.⁣

The book pulls no punches when it comes to the personal struggles, either. Shakir candidly speaks about the importance of self-love and the need to take time for yourself, especially when the demands of caregiving can seem unmanageable. Whether you’re a special needs family or not, her message about nurturing your own passions and well-being is one that will resonate with everyone.⁣

A beautiful memoir filled with lessons and reflections about motherhood, family, and self-care with a heavy dose of practical advice. Shakir’s vulnerability and wisdom make this as much an educational text as an emotional one. If you’re in the mood for an inspiring, hopeful, human-hearted story, Unplanned Journey is one you won’t want to miss.⁣

Unplanned Journey by Insiya Shakir is a heartfelt story about a mother’s life-changing experience. When faced with unexpected challenges, she must change how she views the world to embrace her new reality. The book starts with her childhood and career achievements, moves through her marriage and the birth of her first child, and then reaches a pivotal moment-her second child is born with brain damage due to a difficult delivery.
The story captures Insiya’s emotional journey as a mother. From the pain of seeing her newborn struggle, to her prayers for his survival, and eventually accepting that life has taken a new path, her resilience shines through. She balances her role as a mother to her elder son and as a wife, always keeping her elder son’s needs in focus. She demonstrates emotional maturity by not expecting him to shoulder responsibility for his brother, allowing him to grow up and decide his own role in the family dynamic. Her parenting is deeply thoughtful and inspiring.
Though the story begins with sadness, the author leads readers through a tunnel of hope and strength. She challenges societal labels like “normal,” “special,” or “different” and asks readers to see people as individuals, not by these restrictive categories. Insiya’s reflections encourage us to question and change the rigid ideas we hold about beauty, abilities, and identity.
Beyond her personal journey, the book offers insights into therapies and techniques for children with special needs. It’s not just a resource for parents and caregivers but also a meaningful guide for anyone seeking to break free from the illusion of perfection and learn to value people for who they truly are.
P.S. This beautiful journey of hope and resilience reshaped how I perceive individuals with special needs. I send my heartfelt wishes to Ali and his family for a life filled with courage, joy, and inspiration.

Unplanned Journey is a deeply moving memoir and parenting guide that captures the emotional highs and lows of raising a special-needs child. Insiya Shakir’s authentic storytelling offers a rare, compassionate insight into the life-changing challenges faced by families navigating similar journeys.

The narrative begins with the author’s marriage and the birth of her two children, culminating in the life-altering experience of welcoming her second child, Ali. His complicated birth and subsequent developmental challenges tested the family’s strength and resilience. The depiction of the helplessness parents often feel, relying solely on faith, hope, and healing practices like prayer and reiki, was both poignant and eye-opening.

What stands out is Shakir’s candid portrayal of the complexities of raising a child with special needs. The book sheds light on the societal misconceptions, the relentless pressure to "get it right," and the emotional toll this journey takes on parents—especially mothers. Often the cornerstone of the family, mothers are depicted as silently carrying the burdens of caregiving while facing external judgment. The author’s emphasis on the importance of self-care as a survival tool for mothers resonates deeply and serves as an empowering reminder.

The pandemic added a new layer of difficulty, disrupting Ali’s therapy sessions and creating additional challenges. Yet, amidst the chaos, the family found solace in togetherness and renewed their bonds of love and support.

Unplanned Journey is a testament to the power of resilience, faith, and love. It’s a must-read for parents, caregivers, and anyone seeking a better understanding of life with a special-needs child. Shakir’s story is a powerful reminder of the healing strength found within families and the importance of nurturing oneself through life’s adversities.

In Unplanned Journey, the author Insiya Shakir shares her personal and transformative experience of raising a child, Ali. One might wonder what can be so transformative here. Ali was diagnosed with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy at birth—a condition that led to delayed milestones and required intensive care and therapy.

This memoir transcends being merely a tale of resilience; it stands as a tribute to the power of unwavering love and the strength of hope. The emotional highs and lows, minor triumphs, and major revelations acquired during her experiences as a mother, partner, and person are elegantly articulated. She has described the physical, emotional, and psychological impacts of caregiving, along with the importance of self-care, gratitude, and visualization in achieving balance during difficult responsibilities.

What distinguishes this book is its significance and practical approach. The author simplifies intricate medical terms and therapies, such as neurodevelopmental therapy and sensory integration therapy, employing straightforward, understandable language, providing essential support to families encountering similar issues. As a psychologist, I found it so well explained, and I also learned from her. She also offers tips for dealing with burnout, overcoming cultural stigma, and developing connections with other family members. I am also going to use her tips for my clients in the future.

Unplanned Journey isn’t just a memoir; it’s a beacon of hope for families navigating the world of special-needs parenting. It’s filled with practical advice, personal anecdotes, and reflections on love, resilience, and growth. Whether you’re a parent of a special-needs child or someone seeking inspiration, this book offers a powerful reminder that even in the face of adversity, there’s always room for hope and joy.
