Realms of the Three Rings

Rate this book
“In Eregion long ago many Elven-rings were made, magic rings as you call them, and they were, of course, of various kinds: some more potent and some less. The lesser rings were only essays in the craft before it was full-grown, and to the Elven-smiths they were but trifles – yet still to my mind dangerous for mortals. But the Great Rings, the Rings of Power, they were perilous.”

In the twilight of the Third Age, three realms of the West-elves still endure in Middle-earth. By the power of the Three Rings, they exist as a testament to a time that was. But not only the Elves remember. As Sauron gathers his strength to bring war to Middle-earth once again, he plans a devious vengeance against those who humbled him long ago.
Realms of the Three Rings™ is a supplement for The One Ring™, the official tabletop roleplaying game based on the works of J.R.R. Tolkien.

Chapter 1: Where The West-elves Still Linger describes the realms of Lórien, Rivendell and Lindon and those who dwell there, including the Elf-lords who are their guardians.
Chapter 2: The Days Darken provides the Loremaster with details about Sauron’s schemes against the Immortal Folk, including possible events, Adversaries, and Loremaster characters.
Chapter 3: Landmarks outlines twelve sites of interest, including locations mentioned in The Lord of the Rings™ and others created specifically for the game.
The Appendix contains rules to play High Elves of Rivendell and Elves of Lórien, and introduces guidelines to create Elf-lords, powerful characters especially suited for solo play.

Basically the Elf sourcebook for The One Ring, this book follows the same format as The One Ring: Ruins of The Lost Realm. A description of the three main Elf lands in Eriador: Lindon, Rivendell, and Lothlorien. Then a description of three elf-themed threats, each of which could be fleshed out into a campaign, plus three more threat seeds in lesser detail. Then twelve "landmarks": location based situations following the format established in the core rules. Finally, rules for playing Elves from Rivendell and Lothlorian. Also rules for playing an elder elf in solo play.

While I think this is a good book for helping flesh out Elves for the setting, I didn't find it as useful as the other 2nd edition books I've read. The three threats seemed less fleshed out than those in Ruins of the Lost Realm. Most of the Landmarks are located on the extreme West or East edge of the map, making them harder to integrate into a more centrally located campaign. Although the final three could be placed almost anywhere in Eriador, which was a nice touch.

Weirdly, one of the Landmarks is actually a description of the Dwarf holds of the Blue Mountains, making this effectively the Dwarf sourcebook of Western Eriador as well as the Elf one.

I still recommend this to anyone running The One Ring, or anyone playing an Elf in a One Ring game. I just was slightly less impressed than I was by the other books I've read. It may partly be because this is the one book, other than the core book, that doesn't have Gareth Hanrahan as the lead writer. With him having control of the other books, they feel a bit more unified and I feel as if I could easily incorporate parts of Ruins of the Lost Realm, Tales from the Lone-Lands, and Hands of the White Wizard together, while much of this book seems harder to use with those books.

I love these books. So well written in the spirit of Tolkien's writing and themes. This book covers more about the Elves, specifically from the regions of the Three Rings (Grey Havens, Rivendell and Lorien) and adds several more locations of interest to the grand map, this time with a more elvish theme to them all.

Can't wait to get my hands to the next book they release.

Extraordinary. Realms of the Three Rings is not only an incredibly useful sourcebook for The One Ring, it is also a beautifully written text dripping with spirit of place. Filled with a beautiful melancholy, it perfectly encapsulates the elves, immortality, pursuit of art, and trying to remain joyous in the face of sorrow.
