Ian Wallace is a physically imposing man who possesses a dark secret. Inside him exists a rage capable of committing unthinkable acts of violence. He allowed this rage to escape one night to devastating consequences. He vowed never to let it out again. After being axed from his job as an assistant brewer for a brewpub, Ian finds a bronze reliquary lying upon the banks of the Ohio River. The chest contains a torn piece of vellum. With the help of his best friend, Peter Keene, Ian discovers that the chest is known as Nehton’s Feretory and the piece of vellum contains part of Leann a’ Ghliocais, the Ale of Wisdom, an ancient ale recipe sacred to the Picts. According to legend, the person who drinks the ale will gain all-encompassing wisdom. Ian and Peter travel to Scotland where they join forces with the Lorg Dubh, or the Black Search, a shadowy organization also seeking the missing piece. But they are in a race against time for there are others searching for it as well, including an unusual but powerful man named Murdo Brown. Murdo believes the ale recipe belongs to him and him alone. The search leads Ian and company to Stirling and then northward to the Orkney Islands. There, at the Ring of Brodgar, Ian must control his rage and overcome Murdo’s otherworldly strength if he’s to gain possession of the treasure he seeks.
