The Four Princes of Nature are cursed with the power over life and death, but one being was never meant to carry both. As the princes succumb to the darkness flowing through their veins, the kingdoms reflect their changing hearts. A flicker of hope still remains, but only the Princesses of Disaster can reverse the curse and restore balance to the forces of nature.
Ember stopped believing in fairy tales a long time ago. It's hard to believe in such things as royalty or knights in shining armor when you're busy trying to survive your abusive father and save the family legacy. But some things are just too much for one person to handle. When things escalates to dangerous levels , Ember decides to fight for her life and escape, but she doesn't expect to end up in another world where princes and princesses do exist. Except, they are not like the royalty you know. They are Fae gifted with the power over life-and-death.... and she's one of them.
Thatch is the Prince of Forest, heir to the Forest Kingdom. He should be preparing to take over the throne from the King and Queen of Nature, but instead he is battling an ancient curse given as punishment for a crime his parents won't admit to. Instead of giving life to the forest, the curse twists his power into something deadly. He's meant to protect, but with his power becoming darker with each decade, Thatch has lost hope that he can be cured, and decides the only way to save his kingdom would be to remove himself altogether. It is prophesized that only a Princess of Disaster can balance out the curse, but after trusting the wrong person, Thatch finds it hard to believe that an act of love could reverse centuries of death.
Will a journey to save a kingdom bond and save two souls, or will they succumb to the darkness?
The Forces of Nature is a series of interconnected standalones, but for better enjoyment, it is suggested that the books are read in order.

Shaquilla (shuh-kee-luh) M. Lunsford, or better known as the "Dragon Queen", is known for writing fantasy worlds full of romance, magic, and majestic creatures. She enjoys the complexity and creativity required to develop an entirely new world with its own set of rules and characters. With her love of dragons, they usually make an appearance in her writing or daily life. She also draws inspiration from Greek and Roman mythology to create some creatures and characters, and sheer imagination for others. Despite Shaquilla's passion for fantasy, poetry is her first love, and those incorporated in her books are usually her own.

Shaquilla, you've blown me away once again! After reading Fall of the Dragon King series (and eagerly waiting for the last book!), I just couldn’t resist diving into this one.
Heart of the Forest was so unique and I absolutely loved the mythology in it!

Heart Of The Forest is the first book in Lunsford's Forces Of Nature series. This enemies to lovers fantasy romance features Ember Lanxter and Thatch Redwood.
Ember led a difficult life. She lived with her abusive father on their apple orchard. Her mother left when she was only 9 years old, and 5 years later her brother escaped with a promise to return and rescue her. Only he never did. Ember continued to suffer his mental and physical abuse until she hit a breaking point and fled into the forest to escape. When she finally stopped running, she had accidentally crossed a boundary into another realm entering the Forest Kingdom.
Thatch, Prince of Forest, was the youngest of the royal heirs. He and his brothers (Theseus, Prince of Sea, Therek, Prince of Mountains, and Torm, Prince of Sky) were cursed many years prior to punish their parents, King Hyperion and Queen Sequoia.
"A long time ago, a seer placed a curse on this family that affected each of our four sons. While each embodies the essence of a piece of nature - the life - they were then burdened with the opposite as well. With life comes death and with nature comes natural disasters."
Each of their sons was destined to one day rule over the portion of Alyvia to which they had an affinity but the curse led their darkness to grow. Only finding their fated mate would allow the balance to be restored.
When Ember somehow entered their realm, the king and queen were convinced she was not human. Rather, they said she was surely the daughter of the King of Disasters, King Zeus, making her Princess of Fire, and thus their youngest son's mate.
Ember and Thatch were therefore forced to travel through the Forest Kingdom while looking for adversaries and avoiding danger. This is their story, and a captivating one at that.
I enjoyed the push/pull dynamic between the main characters. Neither wants to be in the other's company and are simply going through the motions. Of course, with forced proximity, things have been known to happen. Thatch is a bit of a jerk, toying with her and trying to assess her limits. He is also protective and possessive and definitely a morally grey male. Ember is not only compassionate, caring, and understanding, but she is also a strong female who is used to overbearing males and does her best to fend for herself.
As expected, I have once again been pulled into Lunsford's wonderful writing and I am keen to read the other brothers' stories, and discover their own fated mates. I welcome the company on this ride. While the books in this series will be interconnected, it seems they're best appreciated in order so grab your copy of Heart of the Forest and jump right in.
4.5 Stars! The Heart of the Forest takes us into a magical world where Thatch, the Fae Prince of the Forest, is on a mission to break a curse that’s also affecting his three brothers. The only way to lift this curse? Find their destined mates, who turn out to be the daughters of Zeus, the King of Disasters.
The story really shines when it dives into Ember’s backstory. She’s had a tough life, dealing with neglect and abuse from her stepfather, which makes her journey with Thatch all the more powerful. As they travel through the kingdom dealings with trials and struggles, they realise that Ember is in fact Thatch’s mate, the Princess of Disaster who controls fire. Their relationship naturally develops, and you can really feel the connection between them, even if Thatch can be a little misguided. Their romance feels genuine and evolves as they face challenges together.
The world-building is rich, and the idea of the brothers’ curses adds an interesting twist. I’m curious to see how the stories of Thatch’s brothers and their princesses will unfold in future books. There’s a lot of potential for exciting adventures ahead!
Overall, The Heart of the Forest is a captivating read with a mix of fantasy and emotional depth. The story keeps you hooked. I’m looking forward to the next adventures of Thatch, Ember, and their fated siblings.

Heart of the Forest is the first book in Forces of Nature series, a Romantasy series of standalones where each book will follow four cursed fae princes of the Sky, Mountain, Forest and Sea Kingdoms. The hopeless romantic and lover of cursed love interests in me is soaring.
The story follows Ember, a (seemingly) human girl who runs away from her abusive father and lands in another world. Ember then finds out that she’s one of the Princesses of Disaster, destined to break the curse of one of the princes and be his mate. Her cursed prince is Thatch, the fae prince of the Forest Kingdom, who believes his curse is unbreakable and wants nothing to do with Ember. But as they’re forced to work together and travel his kingdom, things begin to change.
Heart of the Forest is one of those books that you sit down to read an all of a sudden you’ve read a quarter of the book. The beginning was full of tension, given Ember’s situation. She’s one of those characters you can’t help but root for and want to wrap up in a hug. The things she goes through with her father are horrendous! Her banter with Thatch quickly lightens the mood of the book, and perhaps that’s why I particularly enjoyed it so much! I also enjoyed the world, which is directly connected to the four princes and therefore affected by their curse.
Here are some tropes! 👑 POC fae royalty ⚔️ enemies to lovers 🩶 morally gray characters 🔥 slow burn romance with some spice ❤️🔥 forced proximity 🔮 curses & fated mates
Thank you to the author for gifting me a copy. Opinions are my own.
❤️ Nature is divided, a sickness, a curse plaguing and killing the forest… until a daughter of disaster can heal it from within.
This book made me feel things. The pain the female protagonist, Ember, endures and her recounting of her mental struggles and actions had me in tears at times. While some parts were challenging to read, it wasn’t in a negative way. It was a reminder that such events occur in real life and the genuine heartache it evokes. The author’s sensitivity in writing was perfect during these moments.
On a lighter note, the back and forth between the main characters was delightful, and when the one-bed trope hit, it was simply perfect. Has it been done before? Of course. But is it my favourite every time? Absolutely! The unexpected sweetness that follows, utterly heartwarming.
This was such an incredible first book in a series, and I can’t wait to see what comes next. 🏔️
💔 This may be because I loved the book and simply wanted more (so, maybe it’s just me), but at some points, I felt like the story rushed through certain points and missed out on opportunities to delve deeper into the details. __________________________________
I want to say a massive thank you to @indie_visible_services for allowing me to read this beautiful novel, and for the invaluable work you do in promoting the voices of indie authors. ♥️
Thank you BookSprout, and Shaquilla Lunsford for sending me this advanced review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I really enjoyed this book. It was interesting, and fairly fast paced. I liked all of the characters, and they each had strengths, flaws, and trauma to overcome.
The world building was great, and I had no problem following what was going on. It was really hard to read a few of the more traumatic scenes, but they didn't feel like they were there for shock value at all.
I loved watching Ember grow from a terrified broken shell of a woman, to a strong confident partner. I was lovely to watch Thatch emerge from his dark pit of despair, and return to his old self. Living with depression myself, it felt so real to me.
This book does contain physical abuse, SA and detailed on page r@pe, along with drugged date r@pe. I know those are a hard no for a lot of people, and wanted to make sure it was mentioned in my review.
I was lucky enough to be part of the Arc team for this novel. I loved every single second of it! I devoured the remainder of this novel in a few hours. It’s such a unique story and I cannot wait to continue the series!
Shaquilla has once again brought a fantasy series to life in such a unique way. This time using nature. In Heart of the Forest we have the Prince of Forest, Thatch, and Princess of Fire, Ember, who are thrown together. Together, as they travel through the forest realm they have to learn from each other and trust one another. It’s a beautifully crafted story that goes through the seasons of a year.
This novel also touches on some heavy topics such as abuse and neglect. It also touches on abandonment. It’s an enemies to lovers romance with curses, fated mates and forced proximity. Thanks for the ARC Indie Visible!
The third book in the series and it sucked me in. There aresnyntime books rapper off when s series continues but this one did not. It's dark and a little spicy. Just what I look for in a book. The author continues to grow the characters and pull you in to their story. This is a fun series to read and I look forward to future writing of the author.
Thatch is the prince of the forest who, like his brothers, is inflicted by a dark curse. Ember is left with her abusive father after her mother and brother left her behind. One thing leads to the next and Ember finds herself in the arms of Thatch. The prophecy states the Princess of Fire can cure the Prince of the Forest's curse. Is Ember this princess the prophecy speaks of? Is Thatch even able to love past the darkness? Find out in Heart of the Forest. I did not want to put this book down. I was hooked from the beginning. The characters are relatable and loveable. The setting is beautiful and the writing makes the reader feel as though they are in the story as well. I cannot wait to read more of the Nature Kingdoms.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ – This isn't just a fantasy… it’s a reckoning. Okay, y’all. Let me catch my breath before I dive in—because Heart of the Forest by Shaquilla Lunsford hit me like a magical freight train wrapped in vines and emotional devastation. From the very first page, I connected with Ember in that fierce, quiet way you do with a heroine who’s just trying to survive. No crown. No ballgown. Just grit, bruises, and raw hope. Her life? It’s not fairytale material—it’s trauma and heartbreak, and she’s done pretending everything’s okay. I felt her soul-deep need for freedom. And when she finally ran? Oh, I ran with her. Then BOOM—she ends up in another world, and I was right there beside her, wide-eyed, soaking in all the Fae royalty and elemental magic. But this isn’t a sunshine-and-rainbows kind of realm. It’s haunting. Broken. Enter Thatch, the Prince of Forest—broody, cursed, tortured, and drop-dead lethal. His power should be nurturing, life-giving… but instead, it devours. Honestly? That man broke me before he even said a word. Thatch and Ember? It’s like watching two shadows slowly find the light. Neither of them believe in fairy tales. Neither think they’re worthy of saving. But Shaquilla Lunsford takes that pain and wraps it in thorns and prophecy and fate, and suddenly you’re rooting for them to find something neither of them thought they deserved: peace, love, purpose. Also, let me just say—the worldbuilding? Chef’s kiss. The forest is practically its own character, pulsing with life and death and secrets. The pacing builds like a storm—quiet at first, then violent in all the best, most emotional ways. And that curse? It’s not just magical fluff—it’s a metaphor for the rot that comes from trauma, guilt, and generational pain. But don’t worry—there’s light, too. And fire. And healing. And a romance so tender it actually made me tear up. Because this book isn't about perfection—it's about surviving when you weren’t supposed to, and learning to thrive anyway. So yeah, if you want: • a heroine who claws her way out of hell and finds her crown, • a forest prince with too many shadows in his soul, • curses, found families, and fated love that burns slow but bright... …then Heart of the Forest isn’t just worth reading. It’s worth feeling. One warning, though? Your real-life forest walks will never be the same. You'll be waiting for your own cursed prince to step out of the shadows. And honestly? Same.
Thank you to the author for the gifted copy of the book. Opinions are my own.
Heart of the Forest is the perfect fantasy read for anyone looking for a book that is diverse, original, romantic and deeply connected to nature and elemental magic.
It follows Ember and the prince of the Forest Kingdom, Thatch. She is a human woman who runs away from an abusive father, only to find herself in another world. Not only that, but apparently she belongs to is as one of the "Princesses of Disaster", fated to break the curse on the Prince of Forest, Thatch, and be his mate. Too bad he doesn't believe there is a cure to his curse, and wants nothing to do with Ember. But when they're forced to work together and travel his kingdom, perhaps he could change his mind...
Despite there being some heavy moments in the beginning where my heart repeatedly broke for Ember, there were a lot of fun moments once she meets Thatch. The fact he was so opposed to having a mate and so far gone in the corruption of his curse created fun banter, but also great tension between him and Ember. It was a refreshing way of seeing a mating bond unfold! Though I would have liked a bit more information to how the human world and the magical one are connected, I was obsessed with the world building in the magical world. The kingdoms are directly tied to their princes, so the curse is corrupting the land, and there are some pretty interesting political situations that I can't wait to explore in the next books.
Here are some things to anticipate: - POC fae royalty - Enemies to lovers - Morally gray characters - Fated mates - Curses - Forced proximity - Slow burn with some spice
Wow, Heart of the Forest really blew me away. From the moment I started reading, I was pulled into this world that feels so alive and rich. Shaquilla Lunsford does an amazing job creating this magical forest where nature is as much a part of the story as the characters themselves. I loved how the forest feels like it’s a character all on its own—both beautiful and a little bit dangerous, always keeping you on edge.
The main character’s journey was so relatable. It’s about so much more than just navigating through a forest; it’s about discovering who you are and how you fit into the bigger picture of the world around you. There were moments where I felt like I was right there with her, struggling and growing alongside her, and that’s something I always love in a book.
What I really appreciated was how the story balances action with introspection. There are moments where the pace slows down, and you get these really beautiful descriptions of nature and how it ties into everything. At the same time, the story never feels too slow, because there’s always a sense of mystery or tension that keeps you reading.
The characters are fantastic too. They feel so real, flaws and all. The relationships they build—both with each other and with the forest—are so meaningful. It’s clear that this is a story about connection, not just to other people, but to the world around you. And it’s such a powerful message.
Overall, I loved Heart of the Forest. It’s a perfect blend of adventure, self-discovery, and an important message about the environment. I’d definitely recommend it to anyone who loves immersive, thought-provoking stories. Can’t wait to see what Shaquilla Lunsford writes next!
This book is incredible. The way it is written made me want to keep reading even when I got to the end. I loved how the seasons were part of the storyline. Ember grew up in a very abusive household which only got worse as she got older and when her mother and brother both abandoned her and left her alone with her abusive dad. Things took a very dark turn for Ember whilst she was at the orchard. Financial struggles, staffing problems and it was all her fault according to her dad. Nothing to do with the amount of alcohol he was consuming or the lack of money. So one day she had enough, and set him on fire along with the orchard and ran. She ran as far as she could until she tripped and passed out. Thatch is the forests prince and was out fixing problems he had caused previously when he saw Ember just appear out of nowhere with flames surrounding her. Unsure what to do he put the flames out and took her to the king and queen. Something strange happens to him when he touches her which starts off a chain of events and you see the progress of this throughout the book. Assassins, love, hatred, deep secrets, hiding feelings, there is absolutely everything in this book and I don’t think I can find anything to complain about.

I was hooked from start to finish. Very compelling & complex characters, vivid imagery, amazing world-building, and a very intricate intriguing magical system. I found both MCs very relatable, scarred and haunted by their traumatic pasts and afraid to hope for a better future. One where they are each other's salvation and safe place. Ember was a FMC that I truly fell in love with. She was beautiful, flawed, simple yet complex, rightfully afraid of men yet still called them out especially Thatch. Thatch made me mad at times while reading but it wasn't long because he was just simply tired of hoping for change and salvation. Thinking he didn't deserve it but he does despite what he thinks. I'd probably feel the same, exhausted, from centuries of fighting against something dark eating away at my strength and sanity. Thankfully, they got their happily ever after and found each other. I'm excited for Therek's story; because considering what a brute he is. I'm already chuckling at what a stubborn uncompromising beauty his mate will be. Because I'm 1000% certain she's gonna tame and turn him into a giant burnt cinnamon roll, possibly teddy bear 🧸☺️😆 I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I can’t wait for Shaquilla’s next book. I loved the give and take between the main characters Thatch and Ember.
Fire is a destructive force, so what happens when the fire meets the force that gives life to the forest? What happens when the forces of life and death reside in one person? What happens when life gives up and lets death take over?
Weighed down with an ancient curse that he no longer wants to fight, Thatch plans to leave his kingdom and his people behind before he destroys everything he loves. Escaping a life of abuse, loneliness, Ember finds herself in a foreign land and faced with fantastical creatures she’s only dreamed of. Forced on a long journey together, Thatch and Ember butt heads the whole way. Only when Ember makes a deal with Thatch do they both finally start understanding the other. Will Ember be able to push out the darkness that Thatch has faced for centuries? Will Thatch help Ember find the power that’s within her?
I would 100% recommend this book to everyone I know!

If you love lush worldbuilding and a strong connection to nature & elements this one is for you! ❤️ it also has some dark topics so check out the triggers.
Ember works hard in the family’s orchard but gets only violence & abuse from her father. One day after a long hard day at work she finally had enough of his abuse, so she put him and the orchards on fire and ran for her dear life 😱Collapsed at the forest she is rescued by Prince Thatch of the Forest kingdom. 😏 I can’t resist the forced proximity trope!
Ember is transported to a parallel world, where Fae and other incredible creatures dwell. As I dove deeper into the story I too was transported through this veil between worlds. Prepare yourselves for some plot twists ! 😍 ember discovers she is not only a Princess of Fire but also the mate of the Prince of the Forest 😱 however they detest each other! These two must work together to defeat the curse that is destroying their world. I love the banter filled dialogues between these two!
What you can expect: ⚔️Enemies to lovers ⚔️Forced Proximity ⚔️Fated mates ⚔️Slow burn romance ⚔️Fae ⚔️Curses & parallel worlds ⚔️Black Royalty & POC ⚔️Only one bed ⚔️Morally Grey MMCs ⚔️Grumpy/Sunshine
I could not put this book down! (No, really, I picked it up after my morning coffee and finished before dinner.) Dark and spicy (check your trigger warnings!) with excellent character growth and story progression. Still some minor edits to be made (not to mention my personal dislike of the excessive use of "female" and "male" throughout) but solid storytelling. I'm looking forward to reading more.

Heart of the forest was such a cute read. It gave off fairy tale vibes with a twist. Cursed princes, a dangerous journey, monsters, and magic🪄 but with unexpected turns and a banger of a cliffhanger.
Ember definitely had more patience than me because I would have said “eff Thatch and his brothers” 🤣 curse or not 🙅🏾♀️
Even though Thatch had that cruel side it was apparent he was a good male deep down 💙. I could only imagine the pain and heartbreak of knowing the power that used to bring life and health now brought death and destroyed 😣❤️🩹
I certainly understood where the hesitancy to believe came from, especially from Ember’s side but that didn’t mean I wasn’t rolling my eyes and shaking my head at them 🙄
And as mad as the brother Therek made me I cannot wait to read his story. I’m seriously looking forward to his smart mouth pissing me off 😂
If you like grumpy mmc’s and who did this to you moments then this romantasy is for you 💖
Lots of good to talk about with this book - the set up with Ember in "her" world before entering the forest, gives you good background to work with later in the book, the introduction to the world building is gradual and continues to build throughout the book. The romance was a bit more YA vs. adult for me, and honestly would have rated a 4 star if this was targeted at YA readers. While there is an enemies to lovers trope, it's a bit shallow and predictable for what I'd expect in an adult romantasy book. The journey across the forest seasons is great to build the world out, but there aren't many characters outside of the main two that get much air time to develop enough complexity to be memorable. Very solid plot line, and a wonderful YA fantasy read, but looking for more twists and surprises for an adult romantasy.
This is the first book in the Forces of Nature series. In the fantasy romance we follow Ember Lanxter and Thatch Redwood. Ember escaped her abusive father and when she fled to the forest she ended up crossing into another realm. Thatch, Prince of the Forest, is the youngest of his brothers, and he is in a mission to break a family curse.
This story is an alluring read with the fascinating world building and intriguing characters. The depth of the story and characters drew me in, I was hooked from the start. It takes you on a journey of abuse, loneliness, angst, despair, betrayal, lust and love. Be ready to be consumed! I can’t wait to read the next book and see where this story goes. What a great start to this series! A romantasy you don’t want to miss out on! 4.5⭐️/5
Heart of the Forest is the first book in the Forces of Nature series, an interconnected standalone series where each book follows one of the four cursed Fae Princes of Nature. The book grabbed me right away with its captivating nature and didn't let go until the very end. Having read a few of Shaquilla Lunsford's books before, I knew I could rely on her writing, which is immersive and vivid. The story itself is fantastically written and I loved the slow burn romance between Ember and Thatch. The characters themselves are also very well developed and I grew to love them. I can't wait to read the next book in this series!

A beautiful rich world and incredibly complex and engaging characters. This broke my heart, tore me open and then mended and healed me. I’m still not sure how I feel about the MMC- love to hate? He was frustrating, infuriating, lovable, and intense. I think it speaks to the author’s amazing writing that I felt so much and so deeply for the characters. The FMC is a survivor with strength, resiliency, and love. As the MCs journey unfolded so did the secrets, trauma, love, and mysteries. This couple really suffered through it to get to their HEA! I was captivated from the start and can’t wait to read the next book in the series. Amazing book that I highly recommend!.

Thatcher is the prince of the forest, cursed to destroy everything. Ember is a girl fleeing home. what happens when the two meet? Is Ember the Answer to Thatchers curse or will they part ways from each other? This has been my favourite book of the year so far! The way we watch Ember grow as a character and Thatcher develop as well. I was on the edge of my seat for so much of this story. If you are looking for a fast paced story with plenty of plot development then look no further. The prince and his princess? This is a beautiful twist to that dynamic and I can't wait for the rest of the series.
I adored this book. The series is going to be epic. Our MFC knows nothing more than pain and suffering and yet this forest she looks to brings her happiness and hope. What happens when she decides enough is enough? What happens when she meets our MMC? The growth of our MFC and our MMC is exceptional and the hook at the end!!! It’s not over yet. Fate is nothing to mess with. Don’t try to manipulate it, you will get burned in the end. Enemies to lovers, one bed, a little spice. An adventure to take on.
I was hooked from the cover and description and so glad I was able to get into this fantasy romance novel. It was a great start to the Forces of Nature series and how it was used in this universe. It uses the enemy to lover concept perfectly and had that element that worked overall in this. The overall concept was what I was looking for and enjoyed the feel of this world. Shaquilla Lunsford has a strong writing style and was glad I read this.

This story took me by surprise. I love the way you are draw into the world. You get to meet Ember and see what she has gone through. Then you meet Thatch. He is everything that would think of when you picture the forest. You see him change and the way Ember reacts to him. It is Ember that pulls him from that. It is such a unique and vivid story. I cannot wait for the next book. I want all four of them now. Thank you for such any amazing story, Shaquilla Lunsford.
I absolutely loved this book! The characters background, the world building and the beautiful story. I enjoyed reading about Ember, her tragic past and how she managed to overcome everything that has happened to her. I also loved Thatch story and how he was becoming darker every day.. This book has everything: 🍃Enemies to Lovers 🍃Forced Proximity 🍃Fated Mates 🍃Morally Grey MMC 🍃One Bed 🍃"Who did this to You?" 🍃Curses, Royalty and Nature I really recommend it ❤️🔥
Ember was in a terrible situation with her abusive father until one choice had her in a new world. When the queen said she was thatch's destined mate ember thought she was crazy. However on their journey together not only did each person discover more truths about themselves they discovered how much they mean to one another! This was a great read!.
