Duke's Diversion

Rate this book
He wears a disguise to discover the truth. She wears one to keep secrets.

Transformed from pub manager to the Duke of Rutland overnight, Xander Whitcomb sees a chance to help the working class through his seat in the House of Lords. But first and foremost, he must learn his newfound role to navigate the peculiar rules of the Ton and circumvent an unexpected marriage contract to a titled lady he’s never met.

Lady Evelyn Allen, betrothed to the late Duke of Rutland as part of a familial alliance, finds herself at the whim of his successor’s willingness to honor the betrothal. More importantly, she must ascertain whether she wants him to honor it. Masquerading as a maid in his household seems like the perfect cover to take stock of the stranger who holds her fate in his hands.

When Xander discovers his new and rather fetching maid understands the ins and outs of London society, he requests her assistance. As teaching leads to moonlit dancing and passion, Evelyn is trapped in a web of lies. She’s neither maid nor duchess, merely the duke’s diversion.

(Descriptions found at end of my review)

Should I read in order?
I think this one is fine alone! There are some mention of some of Sim’s other characters though, if you wanted to read more from her! (Lyon’s Lover has the stepbrother of this book’s hero, Althea and Evan have light page time from Althea’s Awakening, Charlotte and William from Charlotte’s Control, Penelope and Michael from Penelope’s Passion...)

Basic plot:
Evie was betrothed to the Duke of Rutland – and now wonders if the new duke will honor it. She works as a maid in his house to ascertain his character.

Give this a try if you want:
- later Georgian – 1821
- rags to riches
- former bartender, new duke hero
- arranged marriage-ish
- duke lessons
- secret identity
- employer / employee dynamic – he’s the new duke and she’s posing as his maid
- dancing lessons for him
- higher steam – 4-5 full scenes (I personally combined the scenes in the last chapter and epilogue because they were pretty close)

Ages:
- someone mentions the heroine is ‘about 20’, and I took the hero to be mid 20s?

First line:
Alexander Whitcomb fisted a pillow and crammed it over his head to shut out the repeated knocking.

My thoughts:
I adored this book so much! This had so many fun things going for it. I loved the ‘duke out of place’ plot line and Evie was so much fun. Secret identity can give me some stress but I love the positions it can get our characters into.

Now I see why in response to, “I love Cam and his big hockey hands!” (from Sims’ contemporary book/writing persona Dances with Pucks by Debbie Charles) she said something like ‘Well then you will LOVE Xander.” And I do, so so much. Xander worked at a pub before a series of events lead him to be the duke. He’s used to carrying barrels of ale and pouring drinks and the ducal ring won’t even slide over his knuckle unless he forces it….

But I loved so much more about Xander – I loved his personality and his playfulness. I loved his gentleness and his teasing. The way he strokes his lips to watch Evie squirm. And thank GOD we finally have a hero that has some chest fur 😂

This book really was such a delight. I lingered over so many cute scenes. Aunt Lou was so amazing too. But Evie and Xander were so adorable and playful together and just so much fun.

Few random reading stats for this author
# of books read: 11 (13 if you count her contemporary alter ego Debbie Charles)

Thanks to Booksprout for a copy of this story and this is my freely given opinion.

This is part of the Wayward Dukes' world, with connections with a couple of other books written by Sims, but can be read as a standalone story - but there are character and story links to Lyon's Lover, and the School of Enlightenment series. It is a hidden identity steamy romance, with differing social status/not fitting in themes.

Xander Whitcomb was raised a working class man with no love for the aristocracy - the closest he comes to them willingly is his new family, as his mother married an Earl. But circumstances change significantly for him, when he unexpectedly becomes the new Duke of Rutland. Against his wishes, Xander goes from being a manager of his brothers' pub to being forced to learn how to manage the dukedom, and needless to say, he is a bit of a duck out of water. Not only is he learning to manage his newly acquired estates, and political obligations, but he discovers that he may have to honour a marriage contract arranged by his predecessor.

Lady Evelyn is the fiancee of the previous Duke of Rutland, and relieved that she does not have to wed the prior duke, thanks to his untimely and unexpected passing. But before she is forced into another contractual arrangement by her family, she is determined to have some say in her future. Between her and her rebellious aunt, they come up with a scheme where Evelyn takes on the role of maid in the Dukes' household, so she can spy on Xander to gain some idea of what the man is like before committing to a betrothal.

Xander is frustrated and flustered after being thrust into a world and with responsibilities he was never trained for, and seeks to find his path in a way where he does not lose himself. He finds himself intrigued by a lovely maid who happens to know more about the ways of Society than he does, and engages her in helping him learn the rules of the world he needs to navigate.

In her disguise, Evie and Xander become friends and closer, but Evie is reluctant to reveal herself, as she and Xander become closer, because she wants more time alone with him. As is always the case, the time comes when her secrets are forced into the open, and they threaten to tear apart the Xander and Evie as he discovers that everything about their relationship was based on a lie. Evie must then work to prove to Xander that not everything was a lie, and her feelings for him are real - but can he overcome his loss of trust in her?

Spicy, enjoyable secret identity romance. Xander has a lot of distrust of the aristocracy and disdain for their sense of entitlement and privilege, especially lording it over those below them, especially as he aligns himself with the working class. When Evelyn's lies are discovered, he feels betrayed and sees her as a spoiled rich girl using him for her own entertainment. It takes the likes of his stepbrother, stepfather, and their friends to help him see beyond his hurt, and the lies that started his relationship with Evie.

What a delicious treat this story was!! Witty, playful and heartwarming.

Xander was a true fish out of water. Going from the working class to nobility was a shock, but one he was determined to make the best of. I really appreciated how he looked at this as an opportunity to better the lives of his tenants and was fully committed to getting his hands dirty if need be. But in the social aspects of being a Duke, he needed a little guidance. How fortunate that his cheeky new maid was willing to teach him!

Having been betrothed once before and feeling like she was duped into believing they were a good match, Evie wasn't going to take any chances with her new, potential husband. With the help of her aunt, she takes her future into her own hands and disguises herself as a maid to do a little reconnaissance. What a perfect opportunity to get to know the real man without the constructs of society!

I loved how light-hearted this story was even knowing that the axe was going to fall once Evie's true identity was revealed. I usually dislike secret identity tropes but in this one I felt the reasons behind the secrecy was valid and was absolutely something I'd jump at the chance to do if I was in Evie's situation.

The verbal sparring between these two was so fun! I felt the joy that they brought out in each other and smiled right along with them. Respect, admiration and desire slowly built creating a closeness neither expected. My heart hurt right along with Evie's knowing that one day the bubble would burst and threaten the bond they were forming.

This is a slightly different vibe from what I'm used to from Maggie Sims but I enjoyed it just as much as the others. Excellent character development, uplifting, impactful, with delicious tension and chemistry. Fun, flirty and thoroughly satisfying!

I was honored to receive an early copy from the author (Thank you!) All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Another story in the Maggieverse! I had such a great time with this one, and especially enjoying Xander’s POV.
This can be read as a standalone, but the name dropping could become slightly overwhelming. I was screeching though the moment that Cheltie was mentioned.

Back to our main story though. If there is one trope that I have strong reactions towards, it’s ‘mc pretends to be someone else and the third act conflict is when they get caught’. There’s a type of feeling of dread that I have when I read these stories, and I get annoyed when characters are constantly convincing themselves to not yet revealing their real identity/secret. It all stands or falls with how said characters handle it when everything falls apart. And how Maggie handled this was incredibly satisfying for me. Evie is willing to accept the consequences of her deceit and that was quite refreshing. It made her so much more likeable.
Still though, I felt all the feels for Xander. I just wanted to hug him throughout the whole book. What a sweetheart he is, I think I fell a bit in love with him.

One thing that I felt was a slight missed opportunity was how there wasn’t a lot of mention overall about women’s rights. Especially in light of how the conflict was resolved, I wished there was a little bit to get Xander to notice that more.

Overall this felt like a more quiet calm lovestory and it’s something I haven’t seen from Maggie before. The meddling female family members reminded me of Mary Balogh’s books and I had a huge grin on my face the last third of this book.

Thank you to Maggie herself for providing an ARC.

Not for me. The h wants to know about the H so she pretends to be a maid in his household. He has a rule not to bed his staff but he’s temped by the h. It sounds interesting but the execution was lacking.

Xander's world changes after he finds he's inherited a country estate and a title after years of running a tavern, he finds that it takes many tasks to run the estate. As a young girl Evie s betrothed to the Duke of Rutland but wants to be sure of this match and goes into the estate in the disguise as a maid to learn more about who her intended is and gets caught out when her family reveals who she is.
After working out their differences there is a happily ever after. Some steamy intimacy moments in this story. I would thoroughly recommend.

Xander and Evie

“Duke’s Diversion” written br Maggie Sims is a fun, enjoyable read staring newly minted, out of his element Xander the Duke of Rutland, and Evie, that is Lady Evelyn, society gal hiding out as a maid in the duke’s household. Evie wants to determine if Xander is husband material. What Evie does find is a man who needs a lot of help understanding and learning the ways of the ton from etiquette to dancing. I like a strong female lead, and Evie fit the bill. She’s intelligent, well read, witty, progressive, and didn’t mind the hard work of a maid. In Xander, I liked that he accepted Evie’s help, her intelligence and opinions even though she was a female maid. Xander recognized his limitations in his new role and sought to remedy that. This story had plenty of steam and passion. Xander and Evie were drawn together causing sparks to fly. I liked that Evie embraced her passion and wasn’t shy about it. This story is well thought out and written. The pacing works as the scenes flow from one to the next. All of the secondary characters had a part to play in support of the story. I definitely recommend this steamy, witty, highly enjoyable read. This book is also associated with the multi author, historical romance series The Wayward Dukes and the Lyon’s Den Connected World. Also included are characters from Maggie Sims’s The Control series and School of Enlightenment series. Maggie Sims has done a wonderful job of building a cohesive world with a myriad of intriguing characters who encounter many different tropes as they find their true loves. Reading the other books is not necessary as “Duke’s Diversion” can be read and enjoyed as a standalone novel.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review, my thoughts and opinions are entirely my own.

Lady Evelyn ‘Evie’ Allen was betrothed to the Duke of Rutland until he passed away unexpectedly. Now her father has contacted the new Duke about honoring the marriage contract.

Xander Whitcomb is busy managing his brother’s pub. He is shocked when he learns that he has inherited a dukedom and doesn’t know the first thing about being a Duke.

Evie is not sure she wants the new Duke to honor the marriage contract since she has never met him. Evie and her aunt come up with the idea of her posing as a maid in order to get to know Xander better. Xander is having a hard time navigating his new responsibilities when notices his new maid seems to understand the ins and outs of London better than him. Xander request that Evie help him understand his new role and soon they both start developing feelings for each other. What will happen when the truth comes out?

When I read the description of this book I knew I had to read it because it sounded like a lot of fun. I was not disappointed and loved it!! This book was definitely fun, very entertaining and had plenty of steam!! I loved how Evie pretended to be a maid so that she could learn more about Xander and how Xander was welling to ask for help when he needed it. I really liked the chemistry between them and felt they were the perfect couple together. The secondary character were absolutely delightful and really added to the entertainment of the story. I highly recommend this book!!

I love the control dichotomy of this series. Men of power and the women who they inevitably serve, all done on a level playing field. This is not a domineering power but one governed by love and equality. As a reversal of the usual class divide here we have a pub manager turned Duke and a Lady in disguise as a maid. She holds all the power of her knowledge of society while he still retains the usual Lordly power. I love that Xander never changed who he was, learning to serve his title while creating a better life for the peers of his past, the working class. Evie in turn is a woman who believes in a freer future for all. The ruse of serving as his maid was nothing more than a young woman trying to retain as much control of her future as possible. Misguided? Maybe, but necessary nonetheless the less. Both of these characters are selfless, compassionate people who deserve nothing more than utter devotion. Seeing them battle their way to love was both entertaining and tender. This is another wonderfully written story in the world of Maggie Sims and what I love most in her books is that we are almost guaranteed visits from past stories. Getting so much time with Charlotte, Belle, Cheltie, North and so many of the others was a beautiful gift. This story will satisfy all your desires and leave you with a healthy glow of satisfaction.

Evelyn, a diamond deb who foolishly believed marrying a dashing duke was her dream. But once the papers were signed, his charm evaporated, and so did his patience for her progressive thoughts or unfiltered opinions. The man vanished, but the contract didn’t... Determined not to make the same mistake twice, she decides a bit of snooping on his heir – her new betrothed – is called for.
Alexander, pub manager with a distaste for nobs, suddenly turned duke and overwhelmed by his new station in life and its responsibilities. He wants to do better for the working class, but has no idea where to start – until a nosy little maid offers her assistance... but even he knows you don’t mess with the help, no matter how knowledgeable or enticing she is.

Of course he can’t resist, and of course her deceit turns into a big tangled mess of feelings once the truth comes out.

I loved the first half of the story; discovering the characters, them working together, the banter, the budding romance, his undukish hobby, her discovery of pleasure and his determinedness to break the contract and marry his maid. Evie & Xander’s chemistry really was top-notch.
Their concerns – his for his new status, hers for her potential husband – felt valid, believable, not overly romanticised. Also their grievance against social inequality. They all gave this story a very down-to-earth feel which I really enjoyed.
The second half was a bit too predictable, and while it was fun seeing some of my favourite old friends again, this short novel didn’t quite reach their heights for me. It was a fun read, deliciously steamy and entertaining, but I missed that extra little zing I’ve come to expect from and very much look forward to when reading this author’s books.

Maggie Sims books make my heart sing and this one was no exception. I loved the book. Alexander (Xander) and Evelyn’s (Evie) story was a delight to read.

Xander was a pub landlord for his brother until one day his world was turned upside down and he is a duke who knows nothing about being a duke, his duties or how to run his estates.

Evelyn was betrothed to the former duke and is supposed to marry the new duke (Xander). She wants to see if they will be compatible, so she pretends to be a maid in his house to study her husband to be. What could possibly go wrong?

This was a spicy, steamy read with everything Maggie Sims does so well. She writes in a way that has me so invested in the story right from the beginning. There were most of the characters from her previous books which I really enjoyed catching up with them but if you haven’t read her previous books, this book is reads perfectly well a standalone.

This is the perfect book to snuggle up with in a cosy place and enjoy the time spent indulging yourself with the handsome, adorable and down to earth Xander and cheeky minx Evie’s adventures in falling in love.

Xander is a former pub manager who vows to use his new title to help the common people. Evelyn, betrothed to Xander’s predecessor, pretends to be his maid to assess this new Duke’s potential as a husband and decide if she wants to honor the betrothal. As Evelyn teaches Xander the nuances and logistics of ruling as a duke, Xander is determined to remain a man of the people. Duke’s Diversion is told from alternating points of view, with two intriguing characters that are equally compelling and would have been able to support their own stand-alone story. Together, Xander and Evie create a full-bodied, rich romance that feels very real while still bringing the spicy romance that is expected from a Sims’ novel. The latest in her Regency romance tales, Duke’s Diversion widens and deepens Sims’ world with mentions of other characters from other stories, however, this one can be enjoyed as a stand-alone romance.

We have Alexander Whitcombe a former Pub owner now a newly minted Duke!
He is to honor the previous betrothal contract with Lady Evelyn Allen, daughter of the Earl of Craven! Her aunt suggests she infiltrate the home as a maid to observe Xander and how he treats the staff and who he was as a person!
They have explosive chemistry and experience intimacy but not final act! Evie tutors him in the way of Ton and what political party to back! Her knowledge of politics is formidable! She is determined to choose wisely unlike her previous choice with Xander’s predecessor! But secrets have a way of coming out! Evie fears he may never forgive her! Xander is ready to call off the betrothal! Will love conquer all? Lots of humor in this story!.

I really ADORED this book! The best of this author so far in my opinion. The characters were both so intriguing and their interaction so interesting that I couldn’t put it down because I needed to see what happened when Evie’s ruse was discovered! Of course the second part was predictable, but I really loved how it was played out with the help of some known characters from the previous books. Xander trying to navigate his new role was quite funny sometimes and the little dose of angst was the icing on the cake. A perfect book.

Thanks to Maggie Sims for the review copy and this is my honest review.

This was an entertaining read and went down very easy. The main characters have playful interactions and seems to suit well together despite their class difference and the deception.

I did have a harder time connecting with the premise and the plot. Especially with this being my first exposure to the author, I had trouble staying focused on the story when all the previous characters started showing up. However, I am interested to read the previous books to find out more.

Another triumph for Sims as she adds this fun and steamy novel to her line of regency romances. The author’s portrayal of strong women in an age where they’re expected to be demure and silent kept me intrigued. I loved the budding attraction accompanied with verbal sparing between the newly titled duke and his maid in disguise. As familiar characters from Sims’ prior books wander into the setting, it immerses the reader deeper into the world of the Ton. While this book is connected to the others, it works perfectly as a standalone read.

Loved the story. Xander is a simple pub manager when he becomes the Duke of Rutland. He abhors the hobs as he calls them and struggles to accept that he is a duke. Evie was bethrothed to the late duke and decides to enter his estate as a maid to see what type of man the new duke is. This book has Xander liking the maid and Evie finds herself attracted to the man. When Evie's lie is revealed, it will test the connection that they have created as Duke and maid. I enjoyed reading this book.

Duke's Diversion is part of the multi-author Wayward Dukes series, but can easily be read as a standalone. It's a light-hearted, sexy romp with very likeable main characters and a wonderful cast of supporting characters who will be familiar to readers of Maggie's previous books. What a fun tale! Evie uses some deception to gain information about the new Duke of Rutland. She wants to make an informed decision as women have so few privileges. Xander, the duke, is swoon-worthy! He is kind. He cares for others. He is humble. I enjoyed the sparks of desire flying in their story!
