Sin city just got a whole lot bloodier

Fae trespassing in her woods is the least of Aileen’s problems when her best friend comes under magical attack on the same night. Aileen soon finds herself neck deep in trouble as news reaches her that the local Fae burrow has fallen and the werewolf pack she counts as ally has been taken hostage.

To save them, Aileen will be forced to travel across country to Las Vegas, the territory of a dangerous supernatural. And home to the secrets of one close to her. Soon, she’ll find her enemies have joined hands. Their goal—the death of Aileen and the entire vampire line she belongs to.

With the pack’s fate—and her own—in jeopardy, Aileen will need to seek out the darkness inside if she has any hope of surviving until dusk.

Writing is my first love. Even before I could read or put coherent sentences down on paper, I would beg the older kids to team up with me for the purpose of crafting ghost stories to share with our friends. This first writing partnership came to a tragic end when my coauthor decided to quit a day later, and I threw my cookies at her head. Today, I stick with solo writing, telling the stories that would otherwise keep me up at night.

Most days (and nights) are spent feeding my tea addiction while defending the computer keyboard from my feline companion, Loki, who would like to try her paw at typing.

Another epic installment to the Aileen Travers series!! I just don’t know how this author does it, but each book gets better and better. I love these characters so much, I’d love to dive into this world. Aileen is growing more powerful with each book and still it seems there’s more to learn about her. Liam is just so very delicious . I love the way he loves Aileen. Then there’s so many amazing side characters that push this series above and beyond. I honestly do not want this series to end. Keep them coming!!

Good, but a step down from the earlier books.

It was ok, certainly not as good as the previous books. Ending was pretty anti climatic. Seems like no one in this series e we learns anything and most of the story and plot relies on everyone refusing to tell each other anything.

I’ve waited and waited to write this review because I’m having trouble putting my thoughts to words concerning this story. First, I LOVE T.A. White’s work. Second, this specific book is a bit of a departure in “feel” than I’m used to with her. And that’s what has me perplexed because it’s hard to explain. The story is definitely darker. The overall mood of the book almost completely morose, with evil reigning supreme throughout, and the gory parts are longer and drawn out.

And, while I have enjoyed Aileen in previous books, she really irritated me in this installment. One would hope that by book seven in a series, the heroine would have grown and matured. Nope. Aileen is still just as stupidly stubborn as in book one and she still races into ridiculously dangerous situations just to show everyone that she doesn’t have to listen to their advice (she can make her own decisions!) In this book, it led her to heartache EVERY. SINGLE TIME!

So why the four stars? Well, the story is still awfully good (did I mention T.A. can sure craft a page-turner?) SO…. Therein lies my conundrum!

Another absolute gem by TA White! This has become one of my favorite series ever!!! The change of scenery in this installment was surprising and a good way to keep it fresh. A lot of progress was made and sooo many surprise twists were revealed. Even 7 books in, TA White is still getting us interested in characters that had been in the periphery and seem to be becoming more important in her life/to the storyline. I love the direction this series is continuing to head, and I look forward to any future additions!

I'll say it again...every book is better than the last. I'm in awe. Action, humor, romance, the supernatural, it's all here. If you want a boring, cookie-cutter, vampire romance...look elsewhere. Because in this book, Aileen's life takes a turn (several, actually!) that I never anticipated. Looking back, there were hints in previous books, but I still never guessed this was coming. I absolutely LOVE where this series is going. Hats off to T.A. White for her absolutely masterful planning of the series. It all came together beautifully. I can't wait for the next book! In the meantime, I'll be re-reading this one many more times...it was just that good!

I don’t know if I’m just remembering the other books wrong but I feel like Aileen had devolved into the worst version of the “not like other girls” archetype. It got hard to read at times for how badly I was cringing.

The saving grace was that I love the writing style and the story was still engaging beyond the cringeworthy dialogue.

REVIEW

A different vibe, but I dig it!

“You’re in the process of becoming.”
“What does that mean? Becoming?”
“That is yet to be determined.”

It is a miracle how Aileen doesn't go around smacking people on their head for being intentionally vague, wise guys. Because excuse me if somebody gives her a clue without shrouding it all in layers.

Anyhow, I did like the book. I swear.

“You’re a menace,” he informed me...
“And what does that make you?”
“Caught.”

More of the review to come when I have a working brain. I have spent too many hours reading this in a single go. I need rest for my neurons to fire again.

So much better than the others. Aileen was still a stubborn twit but i do feel like she evolved into a better version of herself. I have so many questions at the end of this one. This better not be the last book of the series. I need to know! I like that Liam wasn't there for most of the book and we got to see more of her and Carolyn interact. The whole meet the family bit had me cracking up.

I found this 7th instalment in the series plodding and problematic.

It took me a while to warm up to Aileen in this series, but by book 3 I had managed it. She is stubborn, blinkered and bullheaded - but over the series, thanks to all the connections with others she has evolved, become a leader and more willing to recognise that her lone vamp attitude isn't the best approach to succeeding. But from the first page of this book, all her evolution is blown to smithereens, we're back to blinkered bull headed Aileen and it was boring... in fact the first 35% of the book is nothing but filler with a whole heap of repetitive crap thrown in, her relationship with Thomas, Connor's with Thomas. Aileen's with Ahrun etc etc

and shifting locale to Vegas, that felt clunky and unwieldy rather than interesting... or needed.

the repetitive warnings from EVERY other character that aileen is out of her depth wore me down quickly. She never listens, everyone knows she won't listen, she knows she won't listen - so why take up word space.
And the author has lost interest, or forgotten about a heap of characters - what about the sorcerer? Why did Connor just disappear for the majority of the book?

The last 40% of the novel is nothing but a game of - who gets to torture aileen next? Friends. Relatives. Enemies. All get a chance... and it was boring... sigh, more torture so aileen can have some magical revelation, she might die, no... next!

This book has been hard to read, I keep putting it down and then reluctantly picking it back up. I don't know, perhaps Aileen and I are done. This world, the threats, the storylines, the characters - everything feels repetitive and tired... not the book or direction I was hoping this series would take.

Hmmmmmm...very ambivalent about this book..Definitely not on par with the previous books. Started off with Aileen being over juvenile, way too much running around, and finally sooooo much violence - what is it with torturing the MC nonstop? Is it supposed to assist in the plot? Overall liked the fact that there where no lose ends left.

I definitely don't think this series is as good as the author's Firebird Chronicles, but it was an enjoyable action-packed read. The clairvoyance by the characters is always a little ambiguous and hard to understand. It's good to see Aileen having more confidence in her powers and decisions rather that always letting others push her around like the first few books.

T. A. White’s writing is truly something special. In Dusks portent her ability to create banter that feels natural and full of life is unmatched. Whether it’s a romantic relationship like Aileen and Liam or siblings like Aileen and Connor, every conversation feels real and meaningful. The dialogue between a brother and sister especially stands out—it’s so funny, sharp, and relatable.

What I love most about White’s writing is how she builds an entire world without overwhelming the reader with long descriptions. She makes even the most complex ideas easy to understand, drawing you into the story without ever slowing things down.
There’s never a dull moment in this book. You don’t have to push through slow parts to “get to the good stuff” because every part of the book is the good stuff. The action keeps moving from start to finish, making it so hard to put down.

I Loved the spontaneous marriage between Aileen and Liam, it literally had me kicking my feet and giggling the entire time.

I Love everything White writes, I especially love how she makes you fall so in love with every side character so easily.

I really hope this series never ends. It feels like one of those stories that could go on forever, and I would be more than happy to keep reading. The ending was perfect—satisfying and exactly what the story needed.

I have no critiques, just praise. I loved every page of this book and can’t wait to see what White writes next

I’m strangely conflicted about my rating for this book - I like this author and the series, nothing happened in this book to change my mind about liking the series. Yet I feel that the events in this book leveled up Aileen’s power and surroundings way more than necessary for how much time has passed.

Spoilery part coming:
We have some massive loose ends from the sorcerer’s mark from the beginning of the series, and a lot of other plot lines have opened - great-grand crazy vamp-pappy, Fae Uber-power grampy, vamp family, birth family, fae family, hunter plot lines, found family, work family aka lots of yummy character lines to pursue and follow and have just a few layers of characters develop and grow. Aileen’s power levels are ridiculous for her age, and she has no clue what to do with them. There an explanation for why so little is known about them in the fae storyline, yet since there’s so many plot lines, there’s so much left unfulfilled in the book.

I’m ready for Aileen to own her circumstances more - learn what her powers are and how to develop them, learn what having a vampire house means, learn the in’s and out’s of being an investigator; these all lead to a stronger Aileen who can chooses better how to deal with the unknown.

I’m also super disappointed that she married Liam on a whim and is going to just go with it. There just might be issues with a lifetime marriage expected to last centuries when you’ve known someone a few years. It also circumvents Aileen developing her own knowledge and power building by defaulting to Liam dealing with security rather than Aileen building her own circle of trust.

I’m still team Aileen - I’d just like to see more character growth along with the action.

3 stars — because I liked it, but not enough to forgive it.

So this is it. The last published book in the Aileen Travers series — and with no word on whether we’ll get more, I closed this one with that familiar mix of satisfaction and mild betrayal. Because while this book had some seriously great moments, it also came with more than a few “wait, what?” decisions that dulled the shine.

Let’s start with the good — because yes, there was good.

The plot? Twisty, layered, unpredictable. I never knew what was coming, and that’s something I’ve craved from this series since Book 1. It had that tangled, slow-burn mystery vibe I love — where every answer unearths three new questions, and no one’s telling the whole truth. It kept me hooked.

But… it wasn’t clean. There were plot decisions that felt forced — you could practically see the author’s hand shoving Aileen into situations she wouldn’t have walked into on her own. And that makes it hard to believe in her as a character when she’s constantly being moved by the needs of the plot rather than her own logic or instincts.

🔄 The Shift from Books 1–4 to 5–7
Honestly, the difference between the first four books and the last three is whiplash-level. Books 1–4 were a hot mess of weak worldbuilding, flat relationships, and an emotionally muted FMC. But starting in Book 5, it’s like T.A. White remembered how to write again — and suddenly I cared. About Aileen. About the side characters. About the plot.

That streak continued here… kind of.

😶 The Emotional Shortcuts — Again
This book took some cheap shots — the same kind of emotional shortcuts that drove me crazy in the early books. We get glimpses of meaningful conflict — real emotion — only to watch it all get brushed aside by a kiss, some bloodlust, or an overly convenient sexy distraction.

Let’s talk about Liam for a minute.

If my boyfriend pulled half the crap Liam did in this book, there wouldn’t be a steamy scene — there’d be a dramatic monologue, a slammed door, and a very cold couch in his future. Aileen had every right to be furious, heartbroken, done — and instead? We get a few lines of tension before she melts into him again like her spine was a temporary accessory.

Aileen — the character who has always been defined by her stubbornness and refusal to be controlled — suddenly lets everything slide. No consequences. No shouting match. No satisfying reclaiming of power. Just... submission. And honestly? It felt like a betrayal of the growth she’s finally earned in Books 5 and 6. She wasn’t a strong lead here. She was a puppet, and Liam was back to pulling the strings.

❤️ Side Relationships? Still Carrying the Book
I did love seeing Aileen’s connections with Caroline, Nathan, her sister, the pixies, Deborah, Thomas, and even Anton. Those relationships felt real. They gave her depth, humor, warmth, and grounded the story in something emotionally authentic.

But her dynamic with Liam? In my opinion — damaged.

Instead of seeing them as partners, we see Liam slide into a supportive-but-controlling role, making choices for her again. It’s not the team dynamic I hoped for. I wanted equals. I got Liam the fixer and Aileen the object being fixed.

❓ Gaps, Confusion, and Unexplained Weirdness
There were definite gaps in the story — plot points that felt unresolved or murky. Secrets hinted at but never clarified. Decisions made by characters that didn’t match who they’ve been this whole time.

Inara’s early behavior made zero sense. It was out of character and went completely unexplained.

Connor, who has been nothing but protective, suddenly makes choices that contradict everything we know about him — and again, no reason is given.

It’s like the emotional logic of the characters got sacrificed in service of the plot — and while the twists were good, I need more than shock value. I need sense.

💬 Final Thoughts
This book was good — but also frustrating. I saw what it could’ve been, and that makes its flaws even more obvious.

I’m giving it 3 stars, because it had strong moments, brilliant layers in places, and character relationships that mostly worked. But it also smothered emotions, flattened character growth, and dipped its toe back into the same messy habits from earlier in the series.

I still believe T.A. White is a brilliant writer. I’ve seen it. I’ve felt it. And if she chooses to continue this series — to give it the real closure it needs — I hope she leans back into the emotional depth and character consistency she showed us in Books 5 and 6.

Because when she gets it right? It’s magic.
When she doesn’t? It’s chaos with pretty dialogue.

P.S. I hate the covers. Hate them. They don’t even remotely match the character descriptions — like, not even a little. Aileen’s physical traits? Ignored. Tone of the story? Missed completely. Honestly, they are some of the worst book covers I’ve ever seen. I’ve seen better fan art on Instagram made with free apps. T.A. White deserves better — and so do her readers. Please, for the love of character accuracy and aesthetic standards, hire a new designer.

I thought I enjoyed book six in the Aileen Travers series but I really enjoyed book seven, “Dusk’s Portent” even better. The problem is this book was just released and I am already craving more!!!!!! Now, I am going to have to wait for my next Aileen fix.

This time Aileen finds some unruly far on her premises demanding she turn over their prey. Unfortunately, she doesn’t know who that is and what’s worse, Inara and her consort leaves suddenly and without explanation.

Soon Aileen learns that the Alpha of the local werewolf pack as well as his pack have been taken by the fae. Her best friend needs her help and Aileen is not one to turn her back on her friends. This is a slippery slope since they need to go to Vegas. The fastest way to get there is to get Thomas to loan her his jet. He ropes her into a deal but what she doesn’t realize is that he going o the trip with her including his enforcer, Nathan as well as others. Where the heck is Liam when she needs him? Oh, she is soon to find out!

Once in Vegas, it is clear that there is a lot of trickery, subterfuge and just plain awfulness going on. Someone is being hunted and you already know who that is! Yep, Aileen.

The question is Aileen has been fortunate, skillful and lucky in the past, will that continue to be the case in the city known for risks? Well, you are going to have to read it to find out.

This installment was chocked full of teeth biting momenta as well as surprises. As much as Aileen is skillful and creative she is also outwitted by those who are closest to her and often in a good way. I enjoyed all of the surprises and cringed at the near death experiences of so many of my favorite characters. The cliffhanger ending was also a treat and I can’t wait to see where this series is headed. Kudos, T.A. White, you have outdone yourself!!

It is no secret that I am a massive TA White fan and that I love everything that she writes. While her Firebird series is probably my favorite (if you have not read it, run don’t walk), the Aileen Travers series is a very close second.

With this being the 7th book in the series, I keep thinking that at some point I am going to feel like it is time for this series to ramp down, but nope, if anything it keeps getting more interesting.

This author has a way of creating strong female characters that are over-the-top loyal and fiercely protective of the ones they love. They can hold their own in any situation, but are never cold and are surprisingly likable (even when they are grumpy and so hardheaded you sometimes want the strangle them). Aileen does not have a submissive bone in her body and is able to inspire intense feelings of loyalty and affection from the alpha men that surround her.

This book (like the previous books in this series) is full of humor, heart, kickassery of the male and female variety and enough romance to keep a diehard romance reader like me happy (though I would classify this series as more of a supernatural mystery with a strong romance theme, not strictly a romance, especially the early books).

The previous book in this series ended with a whopper of a revelation and this book starts off running. It is fast paced and full of action from start to finish. I devoured it and loved every minute. I love Aileen and the entire cast of merry (or not so merry) devious beings that surround her.

This is a great addition to the series and I can’t wait to see what happens next. I did receive an ARC copy of this book, but I also bought a copy for myself because I loved it and want to support the author.

TA White was writing four series in parallel at one point - and she has yet to drop the ball. All her books have been enjoyable. The Aileen Travers series is her first series and her best. When we first meet Aileen Travers, she is a recently-turned vampire with a penchant for running head-first into trouble.

Six books later, she is a more-senior, more-powerful, more-important recently-turned vampire with a penchant for running into trouble. But she has had six books worth of opportunity to accumulate that much more trouble - and this book starts with everything trying to go wrong at once. We start with assassins, vampire hunters, werewolves in trouble, and elder vampires who are trouble. (Some authors start with one thing going wrong and work from there.)

But it's okay, Aileen has a plan. Step one is to borrow a jet so she can fly to Las Vegas to rescue some kidnapped friends. That's okay, because they people she's borrowing it from have a plan. Step one is to join Aileen on her trip - she can't say 'no' because it's their jet - because powerful beings who shouldn't be gathering in Las Vegas are gathering in Las Vegas. That turns out to include Aileen's biological father (a possible misnomer, as that branch of the family is only vaguely biological). He has a plan.

The book doesn't slow down.

Aileen is back! I really enjoyed this book as it’s almost nonstop action. This is book 7 in the series and you definitely need to start with book 1, Shadow’s Messenger, if you’re new to Aileen’s world. From book 1 to book 7, Aileen has had quite the transformation. She embraced her vampire side and now is finding out new and important things about herself and her world. I like that she’s becoming more involved in the supernatural world as a whole and I adore the world the author has built and the twist and turns of the plot. This isn’t a simple girl
-turned-vampire story ad it’s glorious.
In Dusk’s Portent, Aileen takes on a job for a friend and ends up with almost more than she can handle. There’s plenty of scheming going on around her (as always), some family issues, and some friend issues but Aileen has learned to roll with the punches a bit more and has built a family that has her back. All the many issues keep the plot moving quickly and Aileen, and the reader, barely get a breath before the next reveal happens.
I really enjoyed the book and highly recommend it.

It’s been a couple of years since I read the previous instalment in this supernatural mystery romance series, so it took me a little while to reacquaint myself with the characters. Fortunately, the cast is as strong and engaging as ever—not just Aileen and Liam, but the supporting characters really shine too.

In this latest book, the ‘family and friends’ rally together to rescue Brax and his wolf pack in Vegas. As expected, Aileen faces her usual share of capture, torture, and psychological warfare at the hands of various enemies. There’s also plenty of emotional tension and strategic mind games among both friends and family at play, which adds depth to the story.

I did find the pacing a bit slow in parts, but the action ramps up nicely toward the end, leading to a satisfying and dramatic conclusion. I’m enjoying the direction the series is heading, especially as Aileen continues to grow stronger and uncover new abilities. I just hope we won’t have to wait quite so long for the next instalment!

As Dusk's Portent is the 7th book in the series it makes only sense to read the series from the beginning. You won't get the references.

It was a lot of fun to read this book. Trouble my name is Aileen and getting herself into and out of it spectacularly. This never happens completely unscathed and always a little bit changed. Each book she is something different and ‘more’

I can't say much about the content as that would be spoiling it. But here are a few small tidbits:
Aileen's love story with Liam takes on a new dimension and made me smile a lot.
Ahrun is now part of the story. He's an interesting character and unpredictable.
Deborah continues to develop and is an important place in House Travers.

The ending promises interesting things for the next book, which I am very excited about.

solid but nothing rave worthy

i was thrilled for this to come out so soon after i finished reading the others in the series, and it was an enjoyable read, but it wasn’t on par with the others unfortunately. it felt like a lot of exposition and not a lot of character growth or development, and honestly i still have a lot of questions. i would really like to see a book where there’s some heavy duty relationship building - between aileen and liam, thomas, etc - and even the consequences of the actions taken at the end. everything just seems to work out so well and without any negatives, that it makes it difficult to read when the relationships are also surface level.

having read white’s other series, i think this is fixable - but hopefully it’ll come soon. i’ll read and look forward to the next in the series, but this 3.25 will round down to 3 stars im afraid.

So, I read all 7 books within a week. So, addictive. Are they problems??? Oh, totally. Nothing too great, but a few little things itch my brain as not being right or people evolving in a way that makes you wonder if they were just a convenient character or did White really have this potentially planned books in advance.

Also, could we get a book where Aileen isn't abducted? lol that would be a nice change of pace tbh. Gosh, I really hope we get more because there is just so, so much potential here for all manner of things.
It is really cool how the main characters isn't the only one changing and evolving. Like, her changes are the greatest, but no one is stagnant.
And I love how funny the enforcers are.

Well, I've now caught up in two of this author's series, very much enjoyed them both. I'm looking forward to starting another one soon ^_^/ .

This is her best one yet! She totally nails the character stuff and foreshadowing, making it super compelling.

The Aileen series is one of my faves – it used to be my third fave, but this one blows the others away. It's faster-paced, and the characters – Deb, Nathaniel, Anton, Jenna, and Drake – are so much better. There are little hints about what's going to happen, but I won't spoil it. If you haven't read the others, start with the first one. But if you're a fan, you're probably already reading it!

Aileen's growth is amazing. She finally deals with her denial, and it's so powerful watching her journey – you'll totally feel what she's going through.

This one's the best, most emotional, and most captivating of the whole series. It's so good, it'll make you forget about work, food, and sleep!

Don't let me keep you from this, go purchase now!!
