He doesn't know how to train the cat, what to feed the cat, and what to do about all the yellow puddles the cat leaves behind!

In a Nutshell: A collection of three cute chapter books featuring a dragon with a big heart and a bumbling mind. Quite entertaining. Lovely illustrations as well. Recommended!

I knew Dav Pilkey as the creator of some of the silliest and funniest children’s book series with hilarious characters such as Captain Underpants, Dog Man and Cat Kid. My younger daughter is a big fan of his stories. So when my GR friend Darla added this book to her shelf, I knew I had to read it too. And what a fun experience it has been!

Each of Pilkey’s Dragon stories is a chapter book featuring a loveable blue dragon named… well… Dragon. We can see right away that he has a large heart that longs for company, but after a few pages, it also becomes clear that his common sense is inversely proportional to his heart. 😅 It is funny to see him goofing along, and also heartwarming to see him always come out on top despite the stumbles.

The story is divided across five chapters and written in simple text in a large font size. None of the pages are densely packed with text, making these books perfect for beginner independent readers who have just transitioned to chapter books.

This book collects three of Dragon’s Chapter Books in a single volume:

1. A Friend for Dragon: where our lonely lead makes an unusual new friend and teaches us several things about friendship. This has one slightly upsetting scene though. I am not sure how little readers will take it but it could go either way. - ⭐⭐⭐

2. Dragon Gets By: where Dragon wakes up in a groggy mood and somehow gets through the day, though not very successfully. As someone who is equally groggy on most mornings, I loved this story best! 😅- ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

3. Dragon’s Fat Cat: where Dragon finally finds a friend to offer him genuine company. I wasn’t a big fan of the adjective ‘fat’ being used to describe the cat, but there’s a reason for the same, so I can let this slide. - ⭐⭐⭐⭐✨


The back matter contains a lot of interesting content such as situational questions based on the three stories and a step-by-step tutorial on how to draw Dragon.

Overall, this is a fun set of stories. Children are sure to enjoy at least the second and third books. While the prime focus of the tales is on entertainment, they still offer several important points to discuss and ponder upon.

Definitely recommended. This would be great for kids aged 4-8 years.

This book combines A Friend For Dragon, Dragon Gets By, Dragon's Fat Cat and into one book. The stories are short and silly, perfect for beginning readers and the illustrations are colorful and cartoonish, complementing the stories nicely.

I really like the Dragon Tales stories, even if some find them problematic. This is the first book in the series. It has three stores, all of which have short chapters. This book is truly a beginning chapter book. It is easier to read than Magic Tree House, but longer than most easy readers.

I used to love Dav's books when I was younger. I saw this new series on my library app and thought I'd give it a read. Snow days require some fun reads to pass the time! This was a cute book collection and the illustrations are adorable.

These tales about Dragon are classic Pilkey and a must read for fans of his books.

It's hard to believe this collection is 25 years old! I have read a few of Dragon's individual books, but two of these were still new to me.

A FRIEND FOR DRAGON🍎
Dragon is lonely. When an apple falls on his head, Snake hides behind a rock and makes him think the apple is talking. So Dragon takes Apple home. There is an unfortunate incident in the Dr office, but kids will recognize the natural progression of things.

DRAGON GETS BY🚗
We spend a few days with Dragon. He sweeps his dirt floor a bit too much and digs a basement. His shopping for a balanced diet includes cheese curls from the dairy group, doughnuts from the bread group, catsup from the fruits and vegetable group, pork rinds from the meat group, and fudge pops from the chocolate group (my personal favorite).

DRAGON'S FAT CAT🐈
Dragon rescues a cat from a snow drift and learns about being a cat owner. It takes awhile. Then his cat is getting so fat. You can guess why and Dragon loves the surprise of having kittens. He doesn't spend much time worrying about names. The mama is just Cat. All the kittens are named Kitty.

As a parent, I liked it because the pictures were vibrant, it had short pages but enough pages and chapters to count as a chapter book, and I thought it was perfect to read to my four year old son. As I read it to my child, he seemed very engaged, could relate and comprehend what was going on, and enjoyed the illustrations. He wanted to discuss the pictures and I really felt the level of this book helped him to graduate his understanding of reading comprehension to the next step because he would identify things that he hadn’t been able to before. Not all the credit goes to this book, however, as I have been reading to my child since birth and some things just “click” after a child has enough exposure combined with getting older, but it helped the natural progression.

What a wonderful book for my son and I to read together. We took turns reading the pages, talking about the fantastic illustrations, and laughing at some of the predicaments Dragon was involved in. We especially loved the dirt pile and the Cat storylines. This was so much fun to read together, though he could have easily read it on his own. Thank you, Dav Pilkey, for another wonderful series for kids.

Adorable and hilarious. Dragon would be good friends with Amelia Bedelia, I think. Dragon's stories are both ridiculous and sweet. Dragon himself is very cute (I want to buy the plushie), and the swirling backgrounds are works of art. I think both adults and kids would enjoy this!

My kid (and I) thoroughly loved this series! They are so funny and sweet and ridiculous. It was a great change of pace from his other obsession which is superheroes. It was also really neat to see Dav Pilkey's other (non poop related) work. He has a real knack for creating worlds and characters that connect to both kid and parent. We've re-read and re-checked it from the library twice now. I think we have a winner here.

Super cute and very funny ideal first chapter book for the average first grader. We're in second grade but didn't discover this till Christmas. We just had to have it to complete our Dav Pilkey collection. Not gross at all like the Captain Underpants but easier to read. Would have been perfect last year. Very sweet and silly so should appeal to girls and boys this time. Of course it's so nice to have the collection in one book. Doesn't include the Christmas stories though. My 7 year old liked it okay but had to be prodded and poked to finish.

Fun stories. The space-filler poems between the stories were wonderful as well. Artwork was great with lots of bright colours and even though the stories themselves were not connected, aspects of the illustrations were. This made it easy to believe that all the stories and poems take (took) place in the same world.
