Returning to my small hometown was never part of the plan—but life has a way of forcing your hand.
I’m Gavin Wells—wealthy, divorced, and carrying enough baggage to fill this tiny town. My father’s funeral should’ve been a quick in-and-out, but nothing about coming home is ever that simple. Especially when it means facing her.
Lena Marshall—my brother’s widow, the girl I once loved, and the one I’ve never really let go. Seeing her again stirs up feelings we both thought we’d buried. But with the past comes secrets, and my family’s skeletons are clawing their way out, threatening to shatter Lena’s trust—and her heart—all over again.
Walking away would be easier. Safer. But I’ve spent too long running from my demons. Now, I have to prove I’m not the man who runs, but the one who fights—for her, for us, and for the second chance we both deserve.

***THANK YOU TO the author FOR MY COMPLIMENTARY REVIEW COPY. ALL OPINIONS AND THOUGHTS ARE MY OWN***
This book felt like a chose your own adventure expect the author chose the different paths. But the paths were so different that there was absolutely no consistency with the characters or the story line. Every scene brought out inconsistent reactions and levels of maturity that were quite perplexing. Because of this, there was no depth to the characters or their story. I did not feel the emotion of their circumstances because it was all rushed and superficially introduced. Also, about 3/4 of the way through, the genre changes from second chance contemporary romance to romantic suspense. And the suspense was a very weak story line that seemed to be added as an afterthought to add conflict and suspense. This story gives the impression that the author wasn’t clear on what direction she wanted the story to go so she just improvised as she went.
There were a few situations in the beginning that started to turn me off to the story:
This story had potential, but it unfortunately missed the mark.
4 stars Crossroads of Love is a wonderful small town, second chance, forbidden, slow-burn romance with lots of hidden secrets hiding a man they thought they knew. Lena stayed in a far from perfect marriage because of her daughter to a man who didn’t deserve her and a manipulative father-in-law who wasn’t a nice man. With both gone and a ton of secrets between them, it’s time for Lena to heal and move on. The girl needs a huge medal. OMG! I loved Gavin. He is the perfect guy. His father made him choose 18 years ago between the woman he loves and his family. Believing he was doing the right thing, Gavin broke their hearts and moved on. Now he is back to prove to her that they can be what they should have been from the very start. The emotions, sexual tension, angst, pain, hope, and want rolls off the pages. The suspense and tension are palpable as we go on this beautiful journey of two people finding love again, and let’s not forget the lovely Jayla. Kris Abbott is an author to watch out for if this was her debut novel then, I can’t wait to see what she does next. A beautiful tale that should not be missed.
Lena Marshall's life has not been what she had hoped, she can't say she is unhappy she has a beautiful daughter but she had enough loss and betrayal to live a couple lifetimes. When Gavin Wells arrives back in town to deal with the his fathers death he is less than thrilled to come back to everything he walked away from, especially the one woman he never got over.
When Gavin finds out he has to move back to Hicks Creek for a year, he is worried he wont be able to act on his feelings for Lena. With Lena and Gavin forced to spend time together, secrets are revealed and a future neither expected becomes a possibility but the past has a way of creeping back and threatening to destroy everything they are building, will it?
Pulled me in right away. I felt for Gavin and Lena, they had both been manipulated and although some good came of it so did a lot of hurt. I am thrilled with the beginning to this intriguing series. Can't wait for the next book.
Happy-end garantat!🦋
I love to look for debut authors, and Ms.Abbott has done a phenomenal job with Crossroads of love. There are twists, secrets, and a second chance for Lena and Gavin.
Lena has been hurt, and trust is hard for her. Gavin had made his choice, but driven away to the city by someone he trusted. Aaron, Gavin’s brother who has passed, is the golden child in the family. As layers are uncovered, we discover another story, the truth.
If you love small town, slow burn, a tad forbidden, with complications galore, pick up this book, you will not be disappointed. I am looking forward to the next book in this series.
Thank you to the Author for the advanced copy; this is my voluntary review.
I absolutely loved Crossroads of Love by Kris Abbott; it is a small-town second chance at love story. It is the first book in her new Hicks Creek series. Kris Abbott is a new author for me, this is the first book that I have read that she wrote but will most definitely not be the last. Kris Abbott is an amazing storyteller. I was hooked from the first page of Crossroads of Love; it was impossible to put down and I loved every moment on every page. It is one of the most enjoyable books that I have read recently. Who does not love hot sexy men, strong females, loving families, and friends, who always support one another? Crossroads of Love is the story of Lena Marshall, mayor of Hicks Creek, widow, and single mother of Jayla, her sixteen-year-old daughter and Gavin Wells, millionaire day trader. Gavin heads to Hicks Creek for the funeral of his father, Henry. Gavin has not been back to Hicks Creek or seen Lena in eighteen years, his father made him choose between the woman he loved and his family. Gavin believed that Aaron was a better fit for Lena and broke things off with Lena. Lena was married to Gavin’s late brother, Aaron. Henry’s will stipulates that Gavin must remain in Hicks Creek for one year or his estate will be sold and the proceeds given to charity. The farm is Jayla’s legacy. As Lena and Gavin spend time together, things change between them, they rekindle their relationship, but neither one of them is willing to admit their true feelings for one another. I love the sizzling chemistry between Lena and Gavin and the conversations between them flow so easily, with innuendos and playful banter, and Lena constantly flirting with dirty talking Gavin. I love all the little things that each of them does for the other. I love all the heart-to-heart conversations between Lena and Gavin, especially when Lena details the heartbreaking moments of her marriage to Aaron, and when Gavin discusses his marriage to and subsequent divorce from Sarah. I loved that Crossroads of Love is a more than just a romance, there are dilemmas that both Lena and Gavin are facing that need to be resolved, secrets that will be revealed, and there is a plot twist that threatens their relationship. I love how the storylines get so beautifully resolved. I love the ending of the love story, and how both Lena and Gavin change because of their love for one another and everything that Gavin is willing to do to have a life with Lena and Jayla. I love the ending of their love story; I especially love Gavin’s proposal and the significance of the engagement ring that he gives Lena. Another favorite part of Crossroads of Love is the letter that Henry wrote to Gavin to be given to him following his death. I love all the descriptions of the Hicks Creek setting. Crossroads of Love is filled with all those things that we have come to love and expect in a love story, Kris Abbott did not disappoint, especially with the poignant and bittersweet moments as well as the plot twist and surprises that filled this page turner. I especially love the bonus epilogue that takes place six years later and how it reveals the changes that take place in Lena and Gavin’s lives, I loved it and all the surprises it revealed. I really enjoy how the book is written in the first person from the perspective of the main characters. I love getting inside their minds and knowing their thoughts and how they really feel. I love all the characters in Crossroads of Love. They feel like family and friends. I enjoyed all the interactions between the Gavin and Jayla and the family dynamic, it feels like real family love and makes me laugh at their teasing. I especially love the friendship between Lena and Tatum. I am looking forward to reading the other books in this series. Who does not love family and friends that always have each other’s backs? I thoroughly enjoyed Crossroads of Love, who does not love a second chance at love story. It was such an enjoyable book to read. Highly recommend this incredible love story. Received an advanced copy from the author.
I knew Crossroads of Love was going to be a forbidden, small-town, second-chance romance, but I wasn't expecting the suspense and messy family drama that came with it. I thought this was a solid debut novel from Kris Abbott, with strong characters, an interesting story, and lots of secrets and lies.
Nearly 18 years after Gavin broke Lena's heart in college, he is reluctantly returning home to Hicks Creek for his father's funeral. What he thought would be a quick trip in and out becomes very complicated when Gavin realizes his estranged father left a very specific clause in his will. There are a lot of inconsistencies in settling up the estate of his brother, Lena's late husband, who died two years ago. Things don't add up, and Gavin is determined to get to the bottom of it.
It's clear that there's still an insane connection between Lena and Gavin, but it's not so easy for them to get involved again. She is still carrying around a lot of hurt from the way they broke up, she has baggage from the tumultuous marriage that everyone else in town thought was picture-perfect, and as the mayor, Lena worries about the optics of her getting involved with Gavin so soon after Aaron's death. Over time, Gavin is able to get Lena to place her trust in him again, and just as they work though the past hurts that lie between them, what Gavin discovers about his brother's shady past threatens to destroy Lena all over again.
I loved the author's juxtaposition of the literal tornado outside taking place as the characters "reunite" for the first time in years. I also liked how Lena's teenage daughter, Jayla, was written. She was strong and sassy and adored her uncle, yet she was understandably needed an adjustment to the thought of her mom and uncle dating. I also appreciated how mature she was when it came to realizing how happy Gavin made Lena after the half-life her mom was living when Aaron was alive.
Most of this book was a solid read, but then once the truth about Aaron comes out... it was just too quickly tied up. I felt that part in the end was rushed to get to the last chapter of the book, and I didn't feel like it was thoroughly explained. Despite that, I thought this was a really solid debut book and I'll be on the lookout for more from the Hicks Creek series!
Crossroads of Love was an emotional, engaging second-chance romance!
When I read the opening pages, I had no idea what journey I would take. It wasn't just romance. Some mystery sprinkled in made the plot deeper, and that little addition kept my attention. There were questions I had to discover the answers to.
Here is a little background without spoiling anything. Lena and Gavin seem so in love with one another, or that's what I thought until Gavin blew everything up. Lena leaves him, which I could understand why she did, and doesn't see him for another 18 years. In those years, she returns to their hometown and to Gavin's older brother, marries him, and has a daughter, Jayla. Gavin never returned home, not even when his brother died, leaving Lena alone with her daughter, until now after the death of his father. He hopes to avoid Lena as much as possible and wants to get back to his life in the city as soon as possible. He and his father had a complicated relationship, so he thought this return would only take a few days. However, his father had a little trick up his sleeve. Now, he has to stay for a year if his father's farm is to remain in his family and go to Lena and Jayla. As he spends time in his hometown, he realizes Lena is his future and will do whatever it takes to prove that to Lena.
The characters are complicated and complex, even Gavin's father, despite his death. He is a main character as he drives how the plot unfolds. Lena is the type of female lead character I love because she is strong and independent yet has some very vulnerable qualities. Gavin was the best! I hated him in the beginning of the book because of how he treated Lena, but not all is as it seems, as the author reveals to her readers in the book's first chapters. He is a great support system to Lena, giving her the safety she has never had. An excellent cast of secondary characters adds to the book.
The mystery is revealed as Gavin reads a letter from his father. He realizes who his little brother really is and how he has put Lena and Jayla in danger.
Crossroads of Love isn't just a simple love story with a dash of mystery. It's also a book about finding your HEA, making peace with your past, and looking forward to a future full of promise.
Crossroads of Love is the first book in the Hicks Creek Series, and debut novel by Kriss Abbott. I really didn’t know what to expect from Ms. Abbott, being that this is a debut novel- but I love second chances, so I took a chance and let my one-click finger loose to find out what lay between the covers. This might be a tried and true second chance contemporary romance formula - but Ms. Abbott followed the recipe faithfully, adding a little of her own spin on the genre. With a small-town setting, some romantic suspense elements, a touch of mystery, secrets, tension, angsty drama, chemistry, steam, family dynamics, flirting + banter, challenges, baggage +hurt, and a bit of a slow-burn- the story is about love finding a way even when the challenges, hurt, and pain seem overwhelming at times. And where there is love, there is also hope. Gavin returns to his hometown for his father’s funeral- the quick trip he had planned soon becomes complicated when the terms of his father’s Will are revealed. Eighteen years have passed since he also broke HER heart. But feelings don’t just evaporate, and seeing her again brings everything bubbling to the surface again- simmering, ready to ignite. But things aren’t straightforward, because not only is there the hurt and pain he caused between them, plus his fairly heavy baggage, she is his deceased brother’s widow – which really complicates the matter. When secrets begin to emerge, bringing trouble- the tension rises even more. Can love overcome all? While I did enjoy the story for the most part, there were quite a few times I got a bit of whiplash from the inconsistencies in the characters thoughts/actions. Also, after everything that happens and we finally get the revelations- the ending seemed too rushed. But I am curious to see what the next book holds, so I will wait to see if some of these issues will sort themselves out as the author ‘finds her groove’ as the series evolves. Happy Reading…
This is a good debut novel and I enjoyed it! It had just the right blend of mystery and suspense that hooked me. The emotional moments weren’t too overdone, but they tugged at my heartstrings. Plus, the spicy scenes were well-placed—not too much, just enough to be enjoyable. I also loved how the characters developed throughout the story.
Gavin and Lena, have quite a history. They were once in love, and Gavin was even planning to propose! But things took a turn when his father urged him to stay away from her, leading him to break Lena's heart. As a result, he left town and distanced himself from his family. Fast forward eighteen years, and he returns for his father's funeral. But his father’s will brings an unexpected twist—he has to stay in town for a whole year, and that’s where the conflict begins.
Lena is Gavin's brother’s widow and a single mom to her teenage daughter, Jayla. She's the town's mayor and has a ton of responsibilities. I felt for her; she’s been through so much, feeling betrayed by those she should be able to trust. She tries to convince herself that she’s okay, but deep down, she struggles with her happiness. I admired the fierce protection of her loved ones and enjoyed watching her slowly open up to Gavin again.
Gavin and Lena are relatable with their flaws and challenges. They make mistakes and face moments of frustration, but it’s heartwarming to see how they work to make things right and grow from their experiences. They know they can't change the past, so they focus on looking ahead. I loved how Gavin proved his commitment to Lena, letting her rebuild her trust in him at her own pace. His protectiveness towards her and Jayla stood out to me.
Overall, I found this book to be a delightful read! The mystery and suspense were engaging, and the romance was heartfelt and warm. The chemistry between the characters felt real, and I loved the ending.
The author brings the reader a second chance romance. However it’s not the typical type I’m used to reading. This one goes deeper than that. Within a family, ultimatums were given, and consequences suffered. Is it enough to bring two people back together? Crossroads to Love brings the reader Gavin and Lena’s story. And to me it’s sad to start. Two people who love each other but can’t be together. He pushes her away in a way that hurts her to her core. What she doesn’t know or believe is Gavin was given an ultimatum by his father, to give up Lena or never return home. He essentially chose both. Because when he gave up Lena for his brother’s sake, he couldn’t bear to watch the woman he loved deeply be with someone else, let alone his brother. And 18 years later the decision still haunts him. Should he tell her? Will she ever believe him if he did? Lena was put through the ringer. Her fling with Gavin made her marriage to his brother Aaron a nightmare. But what choice did she have? Gavin broke her heart so much she ran back to her ex. Leaving her in a marriage to a man who resented her more than cared. However she stayed anyway, especially because of their daughter. Now that her husband & father in law are gone Gavin is back, but she can’t decide if it’s a good or bad thing. She still wants him, but does he feel the same? Would she even be willing to let the man who broke her heart back in? When Gavin is forced to stay in town to keep the family farm, at this point things start to get interesting. Will they reconcile? Can they co-exist if they can’t? So much to answer but feeling the hurt and pain hits close to home. If you’ve been put into a situation like this you feel closer to these characters. The author gives those like us a kindred spirit with the characters that were created. I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading other books by this auth in the future.
This small town, slow burn, forbidden, second chance romance between Lena and Gavin was memorable. I am surprised to realize that this was a debut novel! It was so well written!
Lena, who was married to Gavin's late brother is the town mayor. Gavin's father and brother were both the town sheriffs. After Gavin's brother's death Gavin's father notices some inconsistencies and begins investigating only for him to pass away, which calls Gavin home after 15 years. Where he learns settling his dad's estate wouldn't be as quick, easy and painless that he was hoping.
My heart hurt for Lena as we learned about all of Aaron's transgressions and the marriage she had with this man. Especially when you consider the relationship she would have had with Gavin, if they had been allowed. I loved how Gavin demonstrated his commitment to Lena, allowing her to rebuild her trust in him from past hurts. His protectiveness towards her and Jayla was touching. Jayla who is actually Gavin's niece has a hard time adjusting to their new relationship and the way that Gavin lets Lena handle it but supports her through it was very sweet.
Gavin and Lena are relatable, they make mistakes, have humbling moments and insecurities and some pretty big feelings to sort through. Together they try focus on looking ahead rather than dwelling on the past. Which is sordid due to Gavin's mistreatment by his late father.
There were a few things that were added into the book that felt extra, like, they weren't needed because they didn't go anywhere. But overall, there were quite a few memorable moments! There was great pacing and a great balance of plot to spice, leaning slightly more towards plot given the hint of suspense that meandered through the storyline.
I would definitely recommend this book to friends. Congratulations to this author for a wonderful debut novel!
Kris Abbott’s Crossroads of Love is an emotionally charged second-chance romance that delves into the complexities of grief, love, and redemption. Set against the backdrop of a small town brimming with memories, the novel follows Gavin Wells, a man burdened by past mistakes and unresolved feelings. Returning home for his father’s funeral, Gavin is forced to confront the ghosts of his family’s past — and the woman he never truly stopped loving.
Lena Marshall, Gavin’s former flame and his brother’s widow, is a character of remarkable resilience. Abbott paints her with sensitivity and depth, capturing the weight of her loss while exploring her tentative hope for healing. The chemistry between Gavin and Lena is undeniable, and their journey toward reconciliation is both heart-wrenching and hopeful. The author’s portrayal of grief and the enduring pull of first love adds layers of emotional authenticity that resonate deeply.
But Crossroads of Love is more than just a romance. Abbott masterfully weaves in the tension of family secrets and long-buried guilt, heightening the stakes as Gavin confronts the painful truths that threaten to upend his chance at happiness. The novel’s small-town setting enhances this sense of intimacy, with a cast of secondary characters that bring warmth and complexity to the story.
With lyrical prose and heartfelt storytelling, Crossroads of Love is a testament to the power of forgiveness — both of others and oneself. Readers who enjoy second-chance love stories with emotional depth and plenty of small-town charm will find themselves captivated by Gavin and Lena’s poignant path toward healing and happiness. Kris Abbott delivers a tender, compelling read that lingers long after the final page.

"She's always been the woman I would give my life for. A woman like Lena is a breathtaking contradiction of fire and softness."
Another debut author that is destined for greatness if she continues to write. Ms. Abbott had me addicted to Gavin and Lena with the first paragraph of the prologue! When I read the blurb I knew this was going to be a good one.
Gavin is such a good man even though he believed otherwise much of his life because of how his father treated him and the lack of communication skills. He is selfless and has basically spent the last 18 years going through the motions of life because he felt he was doing the right thing by his brother's family. Once he finds out the truth though, he is a determined man that is willing to do anything for the only woman he has ever loved.
Lena deserves Gavin and the way he dotes on her. She spent 18 years in a marriage that was anything but perfect because she thought she was doing right by her daughter, Jayla. She deserves the dang moon after what she had to deal with in her marriage. At the same time she still has a sliver of anger in her heart where Gavin is concerned and yet one look at him and her heart starts to flutter back to life.
Gavin and Lena with their history made for one beautiful story full of so much angst, heartbreak that shouldn't have been there in the first place, anger, and best of all the heartwarming moments. The chemistry between them is undeniable. The bond that Jayla and her Uncle G (Gavin) have and build on was great. I loved that the author had Jayla's feelings at the forefront when it came to Gavin and Lena exploring their attraction.
I am very excited to see what Kris Abbott gives her readers in the next installment of the Hicks Creek series.
Ok let me start off by saying this book made me angry in so many ways. This was the first book by this wand oh boy was I so angry ay a lot of crap in this book. Ok let get to it. First and foremost the whole you have to stay for a whole yea in order for someone to inherit something that is plain stupid. Second I don’t understand why the heck Lena married Aaron so yeah I would understand why Gavin, felt how he felt about the whole thing. His dad was a jerk to him the whole darn time never showed him an ounce of love or respect and then the first chance of hard times between Lena and Gavin, she goes back to his brother. No thank you. Sure it was crappy of him to say the whole F-buddies thing but that was just something stupid that could have been worked out. I hated that every one was against Gavin like what the heck it was way too much. I thought Lena messed up a lot and was putting blame on Gavin wrongly. Like marrying Aaron that alone was enough to make Gavin feel some type of way and the fact that she from the beginning knew Aaron was a jerk yet she kept making excuses for him and still married him come on that is stupid. Then to make it like it was Gavin’s fault in a way no ma’am. This was a story that made me super angry yet it was not a in a bad way it made me love Gavin want a fan of Lena but I loved Gavin. Sure I wanted him to end up with someone else but he loves her nonetheless. I wanted to know what ended up happening with the whole other women thing and the money but that didn’t happen so there is that. I will be reading more by this author.
Years ago Lena when away at college fell in love with the one true person who knew her the only problem was he was her ex's brother, but when Gavin says there relationship means nothing to him, Lena is heartbroken and lost.
Gavin has been a estranged from his family for years so when his father dies and he needs to return to his home town he is not sure what will face him especially when the only woman he ever loved is his ex-sister in law. So when he arrives and the feelings are still strong can he get through this visit or will he escape without telling Lena.
Lena is battling the demons of heartache and lost years but when she is plunged into her dead husbands problems and indiscretions she starts leaning on the one person who she trusted, Gavin.
This is a story of loss loves and understanding not everything is what it appears, Lena has lived a life of looking like the ideal family when in reality it was full of lies and abuse. Lena's character is one of strength and courage, with her interactions with each important person in her life you get a rounded version of her which is brilliant and determined to prove to herself she is worth the things she has strived for.
I loved the character of Gavin as although he was outwardly confident in his life he was always wanting the validation of his father, although in life he did not quite get that in his father's death he saw that he truly was loved by his father.
This story is full of action and is a great story, with twists and turns it will have you wanting to race to finish the book. With the secondary characters adding an extra layer in the story it was a great read.
Crossroads of Love is Book One in the Hicks Creek series. It is a contemporary romance set in a small town full of angst, drama, tension, secrets, lies, mystery, manipulation, passion chemistry, love, loss, hurt, hope, family relationships, and second chance romance. The story centers around the MC of Gavin who returns to his hometown to attend his father's funeral. Once there he crosses paths with Lena who he hasn't seen for close to twenty years. Eighteen years ago, Gavin's father forced him to make the decision between the woman he loved and his family. Although reluctant to do so, he made the painful decision to leave it all behind him. Lena stayed behind and remained in an unhappy marriage being forced to deal with a father-in-law who was unkind and manipulative. Now, with both her husband and her father-in-law deceased she is trying to move on and heal. For Gavin, Lena is the one that got away, and he has never quite gotten over her. Old feelings come to the surface but it's not as simple as reconciling with her as she is his deceased brother's widow. It would be easy for Gavin to once again just run away but one of the stipulations in his father’s will is that he must remain in his hometown for one full year. When Gavin and Lena are forced to spend time together long buried secrets are revealed which force Gavin to face his past demons and fight for the woman that he has never stopped loving. Can Gavin and Lena overcome past hurt and give love a second chance? This was a well written story with characters that you really empathize with and root for. Both Gavin and Lena were manipulated and taken advantage of by those that were supposed to love them.
Have to say this first - Crossroads Of Love is such a great debut novel and I loved it. So if you love small town second chance romance with a dash of suspense then this book is for you . And it's practically unputdownable. Because you'll want to know what happens next with Gavin and Lena . And Jayla is the perfect teen girl , so smart and witty and sometimes sixteen going on sixty. She's that wise and understanding. But first thing first. Gavin is such a great character. He's selfless and caring , smart and hardworking, loving and so swoony. And he's still in love with Lena. Now he's back to his hometown to fix things after his father's death . And nothing is simple and easy because for years he was the bad person in his family's story. And now he's back to fix past mistakes. Lena is my hero. She's so strong and smart and is finally ready to tie all the loose ends in her life . They were perfect match with Gavin and they have a crazy chemistry. The angst and the tension were killing me and the suspense was keeping me on edge till the end. And I didn't expected that plot twists but it made the story interesting and intense . Loved it that Gavin and Lena and Jayla got their happily ever after. That bonus chapter was the perfect sneak peak in their future. Now I can't wait for the next book in the Hicks Creek series.
Thanks to the author and The Author Agency for the opportunity to read and review an early copy of this book.

The chemistry reignites for these two as they are brought together and there is an element of forced proximity. I loved the banter between these two and emotional heart to hearts. Lena wants to keep the farm for her daughter who loves it there. Gavin and Lena find their way back into each other’s arms but there is more going on than either suspected. As the mysteries unfold, Gavin learns the truth about his brother and must tell Lena the truth about her husband. This book captures life in a small town and introduces wonderful characters. I can’t wait for the next book in the series to learn more about this amazing town and the people in it.
Crossroads of Love is Book 1 in the the Hicks Creek series. I can't wait to read the rest of this series, because I didn't want to leave these characters.
Gavin Wells was deeply in love with Lena Marshall when they were in college, and likely even before, when they were growing up just down the road from each other. Lena had dated Gavin's little brother, Aaron while they were in high school. Gavin's father, who was the sheriff of their small town, convinced Gavin to leave Lena because he felt that she was a steadying presence in Aaron's life and his life was going very off the rails. What Gavin's dad couldn't have known was the depths of problems he would be creating by forcing this outcome.
When Gavin and Aaron's father passes away, just two years after Aaron passes away himself, Gavin comes back home for the first time in nearly 18 years, to face Lena, his niece Jayla, and to say goodbye to his father. Lena is angry at Gavin for just disappearing from their lives, but doesn't realize the depths of betrayal between her former father-in-law, in orchestrating their break-up, and Aaron, lying about many things over the years to ensure animosity and a lack of wanting to connect between Gavin and Lena.
Once they are brought back together, it doesn't take long for the flame to rekindle and Gavin and Lena finally find their HEA.
Crossroads of Love is the first novel in the Hick's Creek series by Kris Abbott. I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I absolutely loved the characters and their growth throughout the book. This small town, forbidden love, second chance romance was a quick and enjoyable read. One aspect I especially loved about this book was that it was realistic and relatable. I loved that the characters were middle-aged and not young adults. I loved the chemistry and love between Gavin and Lena. Their love story was their destiny. Lena's daughter (and Gavin's niece) Jayla, and Lena’s best friend, Tatum and her husband Mike were also great supporting characters throughout the book. Gavin was sweet and sexy. The romance was hot and spicy. I look forward to the next installment from Hick’s Creek.
This is the first book in the Hicks Creek Series. It is a beautifully written small town second chance romance. It contains everything from steamy passion and desire to heartbreak and loss and all the complicated feelings and elements in between. My heart really went out to Gavin, at first he wanted to be a good brother and broken the heart of the woman he loved and then to appease his family he broke it again when he left her and his family behind him with plans never to return. However fate has other ideas. 18 years after he walked out of his home town Gavin never thought he would return. But with his father's passing he has to return to sort out affairs. Returning home with all the additional baggage of his own failed marriage wasn't a great idea especially when he will run into the only woman he ever loved. After breaking her heart, she had moved on to marry his brother, but now his brother and father have both passed could this be their chance at a happy ever after or has to many years and to much heartache happened for them even to consider it? Both Gavin and Lena carry baggage and secrets from their separate lives but can they learn to heal together? This was a really beautiful story about losing love, being forced to choose between family and love and then rekindling it years later. I was completely invested in Lena and Gavin's story.
I felt so sorry for Gavin and Lena. I can't believe that Gavin's father could be so cruel to one son and have nothing but praise for the other son. And Lena put up with a lot of sh*t from her husband .., I just don't understand why she never left him. And why did it take Gavin 18 years to come home and face Lena? All their lives would have been totally different if Gavin had stood up to his father. This is a great start to a series and I can't wait for the next book.
Lena and Gavin had a secret romance in their teens. Then Gavin's father told him he wasn't right for Lena and that Gavin's brother Aaron was perfect for her, Gavin left Hicks Creek. Lena marries Aaron and they have a daughter, but Aaron ends up getting killed at his job as the town sheriff. Eighteen years after Gavin left, his father dies and Gavin comes home for the funeral. Gavin doesn't plan on staying, but there is a stipulation in his father's will that has him stuck on family farm for a year. Gavin hasn't seen Lena in all these years, and when he sees her at the funeral, it's like no time has passed and she still belongs to him.
This was a fantastic debut romance, and I can’t wait for everyone to read it too!
This is a small town, slow burn, forbidden, second chance romance between Lena and Gavin.
I absolutely loved Lena! She’s been hurt by so many people she thought she could trust; seeing her open up to Gavin, trusting him with her emotions when she didn’t think she’d be able to feel again was such a beautiful journey to go on with her. The way she fiercely protects the people she loves is something I deeply admired, and seeing her heal from her past was so beautiful to watch.
Gavin is one of my new favorite MMCs! I loved how he’s so patient and understanding with Lena, knowing she has to fall in love at a slower pace, to protect herself and Jayla after everything she’s been through. This man would never allow anyone to hurt Lena or Jayla, if anyone tries, they’re swiftly taken care of by him, it was so sweet and swoony to see him so head over heels and wanting them to be his family!
Thank you so much to @krisabbottauthor and @theauthor.agency for trusting me with this beautiful arc! I can’t wait to see what Kris has in store for future books💗
Be sure to check out this gorgeous book in KU on March 4th!
Gavin Wells is a millionaire day trader, who goes back to Hicks Creek for his father’s funeral. He hasn’t been back home in eighteen years when his dad made him choose between the woman he loves, Lena, and his family. Gavin thought that his brother, Aaron, was a better fit for Lena and broke things off with Lena.
Lena Marshall is the mayor of Hicks Creek, a widow to the previous police sheriff and Gavin’s brother, and a single mother to sixteen-year-old, Jayla.
After Gavin’s dad put a stipulation in his will for Gavin to stay in Hicks Creek and his family home for a year, no matter how much Gavin wanted to leave, he stayed because in doing so he would finally be able to have Lena as his.
This is the first book by Kris Abbott’s that I’ve read and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s full of angst, secrets and second chances! I was immediately sucked into the deep connection that Lena and Gavin have. I could feel the angst rolling off the pages and the sexual tension was through the roof! I liked that Gavin got to get to know his niece better and how their relationship grew. And the secrets that lie within Lena’s ex! Oh my lord! I loved how everything unfolded at the end and how Lena and Gavin finally got their happily ever after.
Lena was the girl next door, only she was torn between two brothers. Lena and Aaron ended their relationship once the reality of a long-distance relationship became too much. Falling into a relationship with Gavin (Aaron’s brother) things took a turn when she wanted them to attend a party back in their hometown.
Lena eventually picked back up with Aaron and started what appeared to be the perfect relationship, however inside their home there was a different story entirely. Lena’s world was turned upside down after Aaron was unexpectedly killed while out on patrol.
Gavin had stayed away, only seeing his brother and niece on the occasion when they ventured into the city. Gavin didn’t return to the small town, even after his brother was killed due to a falling out, he had with his father.
After another family tragedy Gavin took a chance and returned just for the funeral service but turns out his father had other plans aside from a short visit. Gavin was forced to face everything he ran from, including the one girl he had always loved.
Will Gavin be able to make up for everything he put Lena through? Will Lena allow Gavin to know the full story of what her “perfect marriage” to his brother was?
I love second chances and I absolutely adore when it’s the deceased brother’s spouse. The book had me reeling. My two favorite tropes. Lena dated Gavin’s brother but they broke up. When Lena started attending the same college as Gavin, they met up, sparks flew and they were deep into it. However, Gavin’s father has told him that he cannot be with Lena because she belongs with his younger brother. So unfortunately Lena and Gavin have a miscommunication and they end their relationship. Years later Gavin returns home for his father’s funeral. Lena is now his sister in law although his brother has passed away. Lena is the Mayor of the town and mother to a teenager. Upon seeing each other those sparks are igniting once again. However, this time when Gavin tries to explain what his father had done, Lena doesn’t believe him and believes that he just didn’t love her enough. But, Gavin’s father left a surprise in his will that will cause lots of turmoil for all parties. I loved and enjoyed the angst in this book so much. The story really resolves around a lot of miscommunication (easily solved) but I didn’t care. I loved the characters and the spicy, dirty talk of Gavin and I’m eagerly awaiting book two in the Hick’s Creek series.
Welcome to Hicks Creek. A small town with small town drama, and second-chance love. Gavin, a wealthy, divorced man from New York City, returns to Hicks Creek for his father’s funeral. There, he reunites with Lena, the girl who got away from him once. Will they find a way to make their second-chance encounter into a romance? I loved this book! I feel the characters are well developed and believable. I love Lena and Gavin’s story! Have you ever had a love get away and you wondered what would happen if they came back into your life? This is definitely a book for you. Throughout the story, we not only get to know Lena and Gavin, but also her daughter, Jayla, his late father, Henry, her late husband, Aaron, her friends, and the town’s people. Having grown up in a small town, this story really felt like coming home, for me. I loved the suspense in finding out about Aaron’s life little by little. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series. I hope it includes Lena and Gavin, as well, because I want to find out more about their adventures in romance. One note: this book does contain more descriptive romance scenes than I usually read, however, I feel they really added to setting up the connection between Lena and Gavin.
