Silent Country

Rate this book
When the bodies of two biker gang members are found, Detective David Wolf finds himself caught in a lethal environment, where truth comes at a price.

Two members of a ruthless biker gang called the Sons of the Void show up dead at a cabin in the woods, and Wolf and his team learn violence in a neighboring county has bled south into their jurisdiction. Despite the easily explainable crime, the brand new sheriff in office is hard-pressed to look active on the case and sends his ringer—Wolf—to northern Colorado to help investigate.

Unwanted and unwelcome by the locals, Wolf finds he’s plunged into a territory where fear and silence reign supreme, and as he unearths more details about the crime, learns there’s much more going on than meets the eye. More danger awaits, and not just for the criminals. Innocent lives are at stake, and the only man standing between them and certain doom is David Wolf.

The latest installment of the David Wolf mystery-thriller series takes the reader on an explosive adventure through the lung-pumping thin air of the mountain west, keeping you turning pages until the final word.

*This book is the 18th in the series but can be read as a standalone novel.

Fast paced.
Intense.
Exciting.

Great story, well written and flowed well.
I read the entire series. I think this is the best “David Wolf” novel of the series. It can be read without reading the previous books; however, to understand the relationships & depths of characters, I suggest reading the entire series from book 1, Foreign Deceit.
Silent Country is the 18th book in this series and supposedly the last.
I’ll miss David Wolf and his supporting characters.
Yet, I can’t wait to see what Jeff Carson writes next.

I highly recommend the David Wolf mystery/thriller series!

An 18 book series I accidentally got myself into and couldn’t get myself to not finish. Super solid 3-4 star books all the way through. Fast paced, mystery, and lovable characters

Other people seem to really like this book but I just found it boring. Not for me.

I wait for these books. They never disappoint.

Another great story. Well, really two. Both had all a good mystery needs and the characters never let me down. This series never lets me down.

A fantastic story and series!

This series captured me from the first book, and I love how the stories continue to get better and better. I enjoy reading long series like this one as it allows you to see the characters in the beginning, how they live their lives, the changes that happen, as well as how much they've grown since the first book. I really enjoy reading mystery/thriller stories, and this series certainly has had some interesting and unique stories. I like how Detective Wolf never gives up on solving whatever mystery is happening, just like he never gives up on the people he loves or cares about. It makes him and the series more intriguing. It's definitely a must read book and series for those who love thrillers!
I would definitely recommend this book, series, and outstanding author.

☆☆ The only negative thing that I have encountered in this series (which is not bad in any way!!) is the name of the main character. I read a lot more than the average person, usually between 5-7 novels a week, but because of that it makes it difficult to read ongoing series. It's hard to remember everything going on in a particular series months later when the new story releases, and it's not easy to go back to read the previous book to get a refresher. However, what makes it even more difficult for me is that I literally have approximately 10-12 ongoing series that I have decided to read, but of those, there's 6 series where the main character's last name is Wolf, 4 or 5 where the first name is David, etc... There are sooo many mystery/thriller series out there right now that have the same name ~ either first or last name ~ that it makes it very difficult to find something about the series or the character that makes it different from the other series, as well as makes it easier to remember. What makes it even harder is that they're all in the same genre, so I can't even use that to separate them. I don't really understand why the authors have chosen to select names that are so similar to the other ones. I would think that with the mass variety of names in the world that they could find something to set their series apart from the others. JMO!!
Mr. Carson, I apologize if I have offended you in any way, as that was not my intention. I really don't have any negative opinions about your books or the characters, I'm actually quite fond of both, but it's the similar names that have been used lately that make it difficult to keep the series separated. I love this series, and highly recommend it to everyone. Thank you for sharing your amazing talents with us readers! Can't wait for the next release!

This is a review of the audiobook. The description made this book sound like it would be thrilling, but it was actually pretty dull. The narrator, tho talented when he chose to be, was very inconsistent with his voices. Half the time, it was so noticeable it drew me out of the story. For example, at the very end of the book when there is somebody in tears because he's about to die and has a gun to his head, he's just reading about it in a sing-song lackadaisical voice. That doesn't really inspire the listener to want to keep paying attention.

The biggest letdown was that I simply didn't care about the characters much. There's hardly any character development, and though I understand this is an entry many volumes deep into a series, it is still possible to write about familiar characters in a way that's compelling. For example, the Agent Pendergast series never fails to draw you in with odd character quirks and things that keep you interested in the main character, and I have listened to 25 of those books over the last year.

There was very little subtext underneath the plot and stakes. The only character who was a vaguely interesting was Mitch, the father whose daughter is kidnapped, and it's a stretch for me to say that because he and everybody else were just kind of one-note. Uninteresting characters are the book equivalent of eating dry white toast.

Unless you're a die-hard fan of this series I would give it a miss unless you need some fluff in the background while you're doing things like cleaning your house. I was really hoping for a juicy new series to sink my teeth into, but sadly didn't find it with this book.

This book started with a local murder that led to incidents from another town. Overall, the story was good but what captivates me is the feeling that you are there in Colorado. It almost feels as if I have a relationship with the characters and am a part of what goes on in their lives. It’s almost like a moment visiting good friends.

Aside from the murder investigation part of the novel, there is a story about David and his fiancé. Their relationship kind of seems riddled with nuances…you know they love each other but their thoughts on the actions of each other keeps them going through second-guessing states. More entertaining than anything else.

This book is a decent read, not as good as some of the previous books in this series but entertaining enough to check out.

Two bikers from Son of the Void gang are found in a cabin in David's territory. Even though he routinely solves his cases, the new sheriff -Waze tells him he needs a win in order to stay in the dept.
Wolf follows the biker trail to another jurisdiction and although the sheriff there "seems" to help, he comes off as hinkey right from the start.

Meanwhile, one of the other detectives is battling demons after having been shot and seems MIA to friends, plus David's engaged and has plenty on his mind at home.

I enjoy this series but there always to seems to be a threat to someone's job for some reason.

4.5 stars ✨
18 books later and Jeff still doesn’t disappoint. Especially the pacing of the books - they’re perfect. I stg though I need Yates back full-time in book 19 or I’ll riot.

The only reason it’s not a full 5 stars is because the characters felt a little one dimensional but I just think that’s cause Wolf was elsewhere for most of the book. Also that last chapter was weirdly passive aggressive but maybe that was just me because I never really liked Lauren anyway. (him and Pipes better be endgame, Jeff!)

love David Wolf and Colorado!

Thank you Jeff Carson for another Davis Wolf book! Set in a small ski town in Colorado, anyone who’s lived in that state will love the character and the references to Colorado life. This book is no exception. Wolf is a detective dealing with bikers who bully the locals and have kidnapped a little girl. I especially love the descriptions of Colorado thunderstorms and the smell of pines in the mountains.

Great as always!

I’ve read David Wolf’s stories from the very beginning and love that he is finally finding happiness. Of course I love all the dangerous adventures he takes us on. I’m hoping for more Wolf adventures and will wait patiently for another great story from you.I also love how far Rachette and Patterson have come. Hope Yates makes it through his rehab and comes back stronger than ever.

Entertaining

If you are a fan of the Wolf Series, this will be an enjoyable, quick read but not nearly as good as several of the earlier books. The story was fairly predictable, but I still found it entertaining. Wolf books are like watching aa western; where you always know the good guys will win in the end. I'm glad to see that Wolf finally got a little bit of relationship luck in the end.

Thank you Jeff

Another great chapter in David Wolf series please don't stop, I read the book in 4 hours non stop couldnt put it down which has been my experience from the very first book. Your books are so well written I feel as if I'm the fly on the wall watching everything transpire in real time. That's what makes this series so great, you immerse yourself into the story and can't stop reading until the final period. Thank you

Every installment of this series is like visiting an old friend. Without spoiling anything, I'm so happy things seem to be working out for David...things have certainly been rough going.

My review for the book is for the newly released audiobook. Sean Patrick Hopkins is always a favorite in my ears, I'm amazed at how he transitions so seamlessly from one character voice to the next. Truly a pleasure to listen to!

Great 18th Novel

After reading all 18 David Wolf novels I must admit that this is one of my favorites. It has the usual high intensity drama of the war against crime but the ending makes you really appreciate the fact that you followed Detective David Wolf through his many years, watching him grow older and more lovable despite the many aches and pains resulting from his service to Rocky Points, Colorado.

Another great book from this author. This book is part of a series but, you could read it by itself. Reading it in order would give the reader a better background of the main characters. The story moves at a good pace and keeps the reader guessing and wanting more. When you finish the only problem is waiting for the next book.

This book checks all the boxes.

David Wolf seems to be jinxed when it comes to love. All set to marry his gorgeous fiance' and then everything goes crazy.
A lie of commission seems to derail his happiness, and meanwhile, a dangerous biker gang is retaliating for murders.
Fast-paced with plenty of subplots!

Couldn’t Put It Down!

I loved this new addition to the David Wolf series! I was hooked on the story line immediately. The main characters of the wolf series just fell into such a beautiful web of conversations and care for each other. I wanted to be part of the team. The story for this series was engaging and suspenseful ! I was sad when it was over!

This book has a lot of “main characters” therefore I don’t feel like the character development was fully there. The characters felt one dimensional to me and I wasn’t attached to anybody. Early on you find out who the killer is so most of the book is finding out where he is and why he did it. It was average for me I wish it had me more on my toes.

Probably should have not read this book without the others 😅.

Kinda felt like I’d jumped into a random episode of a sitcom where the plot made sense but the character development had been done 17 books ago. I’m not even sure what wolf looks like, but maybe that’s on me.

Probably would not recommend as a stand alone but I see how a longtime reader could fall in love with the series.

I hope to see more David Wolf et al in the very near future!

Really enjoyed all 18 books and I’m sad the stories have come to an end! My son got married in Salida (CO) this past Saturday and the majesty of the collegiate peaks reminded me of Jeff Carson’s ability to paint the Colorado mountain landscape with his words and stories. Thank you for the wild ride!

Book 18 finished and just can’t get enough of this series! Detective David Wolf is investigating the murder of two bikers in his county. As the investigation widens he heads into northern Colorado to follow the violence this gang has delivered. It’s filled with surprises, twists and turns, and ultimately he solves the crime.

This is my second Jeff Carson police mystery. A great narrator on the audiobook combined with a very likable protagonist and good clean writing, and made this an enjoyable novel. I rarely read or listen to series, but I may return for more in this series. This was a much better than average mystery-thriller.

As good as usual

Thoroughly enjoyed the book. Wolf's come a long way as his story has developed. I've enjoyed each and and every one. Glad I discovered the series years ago. Have followed the adventures, seen the characters age and develop. Well done.

Action packed

Wolf is sent to a neighboring county to find clues to a murder in his county. He finds a sheriff there who is not particularly helpful but gets some assistance. He finds a biker gang who impedes the investigation at every step and finally the facts gell.

Silent Country

This story, as the preceding stories in the series just makes you keep turning the pages and hoping you can figure out what's next, before it happens and then it goes to something else, But, you keep turning the pages! Great Read, What's next Jeff ?

Silent country

Good story without a great deal of philosophy or mystery in the crimes committed or the people involved in them. You have to have read some of the earlier books to know the characters and the relationship between each, so it's an excellent follow-up tale.

Non-stop action in a great story!

Best series which rivals authors such as, CJ Boxs' Joe Pickett series and Craig Johnsons' Longmire series.
I hope to see this series in film as well!

Murder and Mayhem

David Wolf is at it again. He just can't help himself when it comes to a murder investigation. I love his character and his supporting team. I envision a young Tom Selleck. It is a good entertaining read and I loved the ending.
