IN THE YEAR 6969 A CITY CORRUPTED BY MISOGYNY AND FASCISM... A GENETIC EXPERIMENT TEAMS WITH A WOMAN BRED TO BE THE PERFECT WAITRESS... WILL THEY BECOME HEROES? WIL THEY BECOME BFFS? MAYBE THEY CAN BE BOTH
This book is a hilarious and an inspired social satire cleverly disguised as an over the top cheesy horror story with an exaggerated and preposterous look at the possible future of America.
It is a lot of fun and but you can also feel the authors frustration with certain misogynistic current events that have been happening. In that way this book reminds me of a movie from 2006 called Idiocracy which was also a social satire about a less-than-average guy who is frozen, then awakens in the year 2515 to find he is now the smartest man on earth. He's not any smarter - but the rest of the world has gotten dumber.
If you like Casey’s other works, or you just want to vicariously vent your frustration about misogyny then I highly recommend this book, it’s both fun and thought provoking.
Read and finished twice. The first time was for the jollies; the second time, it's for the message. I enjoyed it both times. It's a hilarious bizarro and a creature-feature story, but also a timely and smart satire piece, with a few lines that stuck with me. Brilliant. You bet I'll read (again!) the Shark-Squatch Holiday Special next!
Memorable (but oh-so-uncomfortable) quote: "i don't want to live in a world where your freedom of choice led me to losing the advantages I have because I was lucky enough to be born a certain way." (Just to be clear, this line made me flinch!)
Casey’s absurd and often hilarious dystopian tale reads like a lost tape in the Roger Corman filmography, complete with cheesy creature effects and ideas too outrageous for the screen.
At its core, Shark-Squatch is a fiercely political satire devoid of all nuance that reflects the WTF-ery of our present sociopolitical discourse.
An on the nose and timely romp that is sure to delight. Damien Casey manages to roll up humor, horror and hope into one bbq sauce coated story. Sharksquatch is the hero we have been waiting for. An entertaining reminder to revolt when it's necessary and never to speak ill of Meghan Trainor!
When you open Shark-Squatch, throw away any preconceived notions of a Roger Corman direct-to-TV monsterfest. Casey’s conscious of those elements, and he makes good use of them, but that’s cosmetic. This is a book with a mission and message. It’s a hilarious and inspired satire, wrapped in the costume of the preposterous.
Taking place in the year 6969 (really the 23rd century but revamped as a continual 6969 in the United States of Bruh), the story follows revolutionary-minded Tilly and her smitten friend, a Sasquatch with the head of a great white shark grafted on (both elements were discarded from a haunted house attraction), as they fight back against a world gone right-wing mad. Here is a nation where women suffer tremendous injustice and oppression, a state that makes Puritan rule appear mild by comparison. This mindset is embodied by the villain Tate, a cop with a brain that’s mostly lizard jelly and Kid Rock lyrics.
This was a impulse read, mostly because my BFF saw it while scrolling Facebook as an ARC and knows, i love fucked up horror and read ARCs so here we are.
This was a freaking hoot. It was hilariously cheesy and knew exactly the fine line to walk of being too cringe to be funny and being an absolute riot.
The one thing I really did enjoy is this is the kind of satire written where you actually see what is going on and its not just a joke, this happens, misogyny especially , its not all just a joke to be a joke, it actually puts a little spot light on some of the things wrong in the world, just with a funny wrapping paper, which helps people , not so open, digest it a little easier.
This is a new to me author, and after seeing how well they wrote this, but still made it funny, they are a must check out for me .
This made me think in a way i didn't think a satirical horror would.
Do not be fooled by the name Shark-Squatch. This book is political satire wrapped in humorous sci fi horror. Never has a dystopian future scared me more, while also feeling strangely plausible, than the world of Shark-Squatch.
Set in the year 6969, which is actually 2234, the male dominated society insists on the cooler sounding date. Shark-Squatch, a creature with the head of a shark on the body of a sasquatch, teams up with Tilly, a woman forced to work as a waitress because in the year 6969 women can only hold approved jobs, most of which involve serving men. This unlikely duo goes on a violent rampage to help smash the patriarchy.
This book is as wild as it sounds. The lore that Damien Casey has created is hilarious and clever. Casey does not hold back, and I appreciate that. The story has a lot to say, and I would highly recommend it.
I received this book to prepare for the Shark-Squatch Holiday Special ARC that came with it.
I adored Shark-squatch - I'd totally get matching pink heart tattoos with him.
Damien has something to say with this one and he is neither subtle nor quiet about it and I loved every moment. Shark-squatch blends horror and humor with fast pacing and pop culture references that fly at you a mile a minute. You can go from laughing to saying "ew" within a single sentence. Which is everything I've come to expect from a Casey Bubblegum Bizzaro novella. Genuinely loved all the fun poked at common tropes in this one. It was fun seeing some of the tie-ins from his other books and now I want to read them all together.
I just saw there's going to be a Christmas Shark-squatch holiday special and to that I say, PUT IT ON MY TAB!
This is a feminist anti-fascist horror-comedy novella that has Toxic Avenger vibes. It’s the year 2234, and Tilly, a woman who has been genetically engineered for her position as a waitress (because there are only certain approved jobs/roles for women) teams up with Shark-Squatch (shark head on a Sasquatch body) to exact justice on the male dominated society. If you want something totally gory and wacky but with real life concerns at its core, this one’s for you!
Damien Casey brings his unique Bubblegum Bizarro voice to his most satirical story yet. People have a lot of ideas regarding what makes great satire. For me, above all else, it's anger. Rage underwrites the best satire, and Casey delivers his angriest, most absurd work yet, a story equal parts Robocop and John Kennedy Toole.
Damien casey has such a unique writing style. It hooks you from the get-go. His ability to combine at the craziness happening currently and the instability of the world, with comedy and horror, is amazing. I have yet to read a Damien casey novel I did not enjoy and devour
Welcome to the year 6969. Things are radically different. Met Shark-Sqatch, he wants to make things right. He has an unexpected ally. Can they stop the madness and change the world. Delightful mad cap read.
Hilarious, in the best way. I genuinely laughed out loud multiple times. The gore was great bloody but still funny and the characters were ridiculous in that lovable, over the top way. It’s pure chaos, and I had a blast. Definitely recommend if you want something absurd and fun.
I LOVED THIS BOOK. It is the first one I had read by Damien Casey, and it did not disappoint. Laughed out loud multiple times. And now I have to read his entire collection.
Violence, a weird futuristic setting, and more satire than you can shake an intesti-pede at. Wonderful quick read. Damien’s books are always ridiculous and fun. Did not disappoint.
It's (always) the year 6969, and the United States of Bruh has been made great again and again. Misogyny and fascism are in charge, there's illegal pink, and a Shark-Squatch has been released upon the world.
This satire horror novella is a look at what the future looks like at the rate the US is going, and it felt like a night out with good friends. I started to highlight different parts of the book that made me laugh but it ended up being almost the whole book. The socio-political commentary was spot on and felt like a therapy session and an SNL sketch all at once.
The characters are phenomenal. Tilly in particular is someone to really cheer for, especially when she teams up with a crazy cryptid mix of a shark and sasquatch.
This was my first Damien Casey book, but it will not be my last.
