Oenone

When Oenone (eh-no-knee), a Princess of Troy, wakes up in modern day St. Louis, her last memories from ancient Troy are of dying. She's alone, confused, and reeling from her own death as well as the guilt at having refused to help her husband, Paris, who’d been shot by countless Greek arrows.

Aphrodite, who caused the Trojan War and the downfall of Paris, arrives to explain why Oenone has been brought back to life. Aphrodite feels remorseful for Oenone, an unintended victim, and decides to offer a second chance at the happiness she was robbed of 3,000 years ago. But as always with the gods, there is a catch.

While Paris has been reborn, he has no memories of his previous life, whilst Oenone remembers everything, but has no knowledge of the new and modern world she now exists in. Aphrodite instructs her to figure it out for herself, warning her not to waste the opportunity she has been given. She must somehow find her husband and make him love her again.

The cultural disparities and the losses she’s faced are a struggle. Divine retribution may strike with failure. Newfound friends and a budding attraction help her learn more about herself, but as she gains independence and a sense of self, she begins to wonder if another relationship with Paris is what she truly wants.

But how can she turn away from a mission given by a Goddess?

This was an interesting concept for a book! Quick and easy read with a lot going on and progressing the story quickly.
In this we the reader are posed the question, is a second chance for love worth it ? Or could your own happy ending be completely opposite and unexpected?
I’m so glad that Oenone finally got her happy ending, just not how she first expected
In this story we are also dealing a complex romance that is brought to life so well, asking if the what the goddess has granted us a second chance at, is actually the right step forward or could she be ignored and go in a different direction
I fully recommend this to everyone who wants a read that will keep you hooked and needing to know what happens next

I love, love, loved reading Oenone by Leah Rochelle! This was such a unique and creative take on Greek mythology, and I genuinely could not put it down.

I loved the decision to center the story on Oenone, a figure from Greek mythology who rarely gets the spotlight, and bring her into the modern world. Watching her navigate a completely unfamiliar life while carrying the memories and grief of her past was incredibly compelling. I especially loved watching her discover who she is outside of Paris and begin to question what she actually wants from her second chance.

Perfect for readers who like:
❦ Greek mythology retellings
✦ lesser-known women of mythology
❦ ancient characters in the modern world
✦ second chances
❦ forced proximity
✦ black cat × golden retriever
❦ love triangles
✦ self-discovery
❦ female empowerment
✦ finding yourself outside of a relationship

Thank you so much to the author for the ARC!

I have long been a fan of Greek mythology. So, when I heard this was a romance based on a little known character from that mythology, I was eager to read it.

I found Oenone to be a very empathetic character. She is given a second chance at life after going through unimaginable tragedy. The goddess Aphrodite brings her back to life in the present, letting her know that her husband, Paris, has been reincarnated too.

From the first, Oenone is faced with the challenge of navigating an unfamiliar world as she is also still reeling from what she went through in her past life. She is helped by a young man who realizes that she is a woman who was a statue brought to life. Leah Rochelle does an excellent job of weaving in Oenone's backstory with her current struggles as the story unfolds from there. I loved how she takes this little known character and echoes the story of Pygmalion to some extent, using that as a vehicle to bring Oenone back to life in a believable way in the context of the plot.

I also enjoyed experiencing Oenone's wonder and confusion as she learns to navigate contemporary St. Louis and Chicago. It simultaneously forces her to learn to be independent and self-sufficient to some degree, while also helping her get past her grief from her past losses. The character of Jasen, the security guard who helps her, also became one of my favorite characters. He is clever, patient and kind without being a total pushover. This builds a level of trust and understanding between the two of them that helps set Oenone on her path to personal growth. It also led to a story that focuses more on human connection than lust and physical attraction as Oenone's quest to find love unfolds.

While the mythology and characterization were both excellent so were some of the themes the book explores. It brings up questions about free-will vs. destiny or fate, learning to forgive yourself, recognizing one's own autonomy and worth, and deciding how your past experience should define your future life if you're given a second chance at one.

If you enjoy Greek mythology, slow-burn, sweet romance, and character-driven stories, with female main characters who grow and learn to be resilient and brave throughout the story, then you will love Leah Rochelle's Oenone.

For more than two millennia, Oenone has been dead. In case you didn’t realize, she was the first wife of Paris before he fell under the spell of Helen of Troy. Grief and confusion consume her as she awakes in modern day St. Louis. She’s in a museum and all alone. The voice of Aphrodite fills her head with an offer of a second chance at love with Paris. It appears he’s been reborn and all she has to do is find Paris in his reincarnated self. Getting him to fall in love with her once again is the trick but then again, when it comes to the gods, there’s always a catch. This new world is confusing and when Oenone befriends a museum security guard, he helps her navigate the modern world. He believes she is a reincarnated Oenone which is a miracle. As Oenone feels more confident in the skin she’s in and becomes the woman she’s meant to be, she wonders if Paris is the man she really wants or is it someone else. Can she turn against Aphrodite without consequences? Or is there one more twist she didn’t see coming?

Oenone is one of the most creative retellings of Oenone I’ve ever read. I adore Greek mythology and the romantasy retellings that are being published. The descriptive narration is immersive. The world-building is flawless. Putting the character into a modern setting is original and had me whipping through the pages. But it’s the characters that makes this one of the best books I’ve read. Leah Rochelle has penned an unputdownable romantasy. Trust me, she’s a new voice in romantasy and you don’t want to miss out. If you’re looking for a fresh take on Oenone with humor, rom com vibes, and emotion, you’ll want to read Oenone. I can’t wait to read more from this author.

As someone who has always loved Greek mythology, I was incredibly excited to pick up Oenone, and it exceeded my expectations.

I loved how the author took a lesser-known figure from Greek mythology and gave her an entirely new life in a modern setting while still honoring the emotions and history of the original legend. It felt fresh, creative, and unlike any mythology retelling I’ve read before.

What stood out to me most was Oenone herself. She begins the story carrying the weight of loss, betrayal, and memories from another lifetime, yet watching her slowly rebuild her identity and learn to make choices for herself was incredibly rewarding. Her journey is just as much about self-discovery as it is about romance.

The mythology is woven naturally into the story rather than overwhelming it, making it approachable even for readers who aren’t experts on Greek legends. At the same time, those familiar with the myths will appreciate all of the references and connections hidden throughout the novel.

The romance develops with patience and emotional depth, and I enjoyed that it focused on trust, healing, and personal growth instead of relying solely on dramatic moments. The modern setting blended surprisingly well with the ancient mythology, creating a story that felt both familiar and original.

I also appreciated how the book explores larger questions about fate, free will, forgiveness, and whether we should allow our past to define our future. Those themes gave the story an emotional depth that stayed with me long after I finished reading.

If you enjoy Greek mythology, character-driven stories, emotional romance, and heroines who grow stronger with every challenge they face, I would absolutely recommend Oenone.

this book was unique in concept. i’ve only read one other Greek mythology retelling, so i can’t consider myself an expert on the subject 😅, but i thought to myself, “Wow. *in contemplative awe* Imagine if you lived thousands of years ago and you were brought back to find your husband and live out the rest of your days with him in the 21st Century.” that would be kind of wild haha! at first, it was a little hard to understand why Oenone wouldn’t understand some of the modern day things we have that thousands of years ago they may or may not have had. but then giving it some more thought, i thought about how overwhelming this would be to anyone if they were brought back and transplanted in a time they knew nothing about. i think the hardest, but most rewarding part of the book was when she found her husband, Paris. no spoilers will be given, but it was sad to see how all of that affected her so deeply (amongst other things). she learned some tough things about her husband, but that allowed for more beautiful, positive things to take root and blossom. also, absolutely love Jasen; he’s going to be added to my list of green flag, fictional boyfriends! the epilogue was so cute and so amazing 🥰! thank you to the incredibly talented and kind author for reaching out to me about her book!

eArc Oenone book review

Oenone by Leah Rochelle is a smooth blend of Greek mythology and modern day. The story flows effortlessly, not forced or rushed.

There are several layers to this story allowing the reader to easily follow the pilgrimage for the main characters and the complexity as the journey takes a few turns along the way.

I loved the way the author chose to handle some of the more “sticky” situations that could have ended in disaster for Oenone and how she revealed certain truths to the characters throughout the story.

There were many times I laughed out loud at Oenone’s reflections and perceptions mentioned in the book as she ingests more of what is “the modern world” versus her original time and location. It was fun to participate in her excitement over her discoveries. One of my favorite interpretations is of her very first bathroom experience.

Fate, self discovery, choice and love with a smattering of respect for the Greek gods is woven into this story. I enjoyed every moment and it left me wanting more of their story!

I highly recommend reading it, took me less than 2 days to finish. Please write more of their story, would love to see where it goes from here.

Oenone by Leah Rochelle is a unique blend of mythology, time displacement, and emotional rediscovery that reimagines a forgotten figure from the Trojan myth in a modern world.

Oenone wakes up in present-day St. Louis after dying in ancient Troy—only to find herself caught between two worlds, two versions of love, and a destiny she never asked for.

Her past is heavy: grief, betrayal, and the haunting memory of Paris and the Trojan War. But her present is even more disorienting—modern life, unfamiliar customs, and a mission from Aphrodite herself.

What makes this story compelling is its emotional conflict:

* fate vs free will
* divine interference vs human choice
* memory vs identity
* love vs self-discovery

The romance element is layered and complicated—especially as Paris is reborn without memories, forcing Oenone to question whether love can truly be recreated… or if it should be.

As she adapts to a new world and forms new connections, the biggest question becomes not how to fulfill a goddess’s command, but whether she even wants to.

It’s reflective, emotional, and quietly empowering.

As we have well established even before me reading this ARC, I am a Greek Mythology addict, and oh. my. gods.

Oenone doesn't get the love and attention she is due in mythology. This book dovetails her story with that of a modern day Oenone, plucked as-is from Hades' clutches and plopped into the modern world. Already adore THAT experience, as she is endearing and curious, sweet and full of wonder. But now she gets to explore history and culture in all new ways and she will not pass up the opportunity

Paris can die in a hole, disrespectfully 😀 the juxtaposition of a self-important, weak-willed, controlling man-child against those who value others, love selflessly and protect all, is the best kind of whiplash.

Oenone's journey of self discovery and learning to love and value herself is heartwarming and tender. I love her dearly.

Oenone was a delight to read! Her journey from the ancient past to being abruptly dropped into the present was beautiful, heartbreaking, and inspiring as she gains independence and strength. The characters each brought their own spark to the story, tying in a unique blend of modern settings with rich art history and Greek lore.

Combining comedy, grief, love, loss, and an inquisitive baddie of a main character, Oenone stands out as a story that brings myth to life and teaches valuable lessons along the way.

Read this if you:
-Want a full-circle female empowerment moment
-Love a green flag guy who is patient and kind
-Appreciate the joys of good friends and found family
-Are looking for fun date ideas and incredible art history references
-Enjoy McDonalds

Thank you to the author for the advance readers copy

I’m a BIG fan of Greek mythology and I devoured this book! I enjoyed the modern twist to the story.
The author did a great job with the character development and growth for Oenone. And unfortunately she did learn her lesson about Paris, the man she fell in love with thousands of years before. I really enjoyed reading Oenone growth as an independent woman and most importantly emotionally. She falls in love with a modern man that knows how to value and respect women. Since it is modern world there wasn’t a whole lot of magic, but do like that Oenone was still able to have a little bit of her magic.
This is a perfect book if you’re looking for a quick and sweet read

Thank you to Leah Rochelle and Rowan Prose Publishing for the ARC.

I'll be honest...I know nothing about Oenone's story or ancient Greece but now I really want to know more because her story was brought to life in such a unique way. I was really intrigued, and I found myself googling things as I was reading.
I enjoyed how consistent Oenone's voice was, and the characterisation throughout. There was a certain character who I wanted to slap. Repeatedly.
I don't want to give any spoilers but the romance was very sweet and well executed. I'm so glad that Oenone finally got her happy ending...with the right guy!

Sometimes it's hard to get a Greek mythology retelling right...but that's not the case for Oenone. This was such a fun and equally emotional read that offers a fresh perspective on Greek mythology. I especially loved that the author chose to re-imagine a female character who was kind of done dirty in the mythology. I also love how it's set in the modern midwest. While reading it was giving me sort of "Kate and Leopold" vibes so I highly recommend if you enjoy stories that have that time travel/fish out of water, wrong century/right person kind of romance vibes. I thoroughly loved it and can't wait to see what she writes next!

I was so excited to read this reimagining of Oenone - the wife I didn't know existed! I'm not normally into romance novels but I loved the historical and paranormal twists that this story had. I absolutely flew through it and loved it - it was easy to read and follow and such a breath of fresh air from other novels. I would definitely enjoy this as a beach read! Oenone and Jasen was a bit predictable but I felt so much comfort by it :D After Oenone had her self awakening with Paris, it was just a matter of time before she came to all of her senses and saw what was right in front of her.

Absolutely loved this book and will be checking out anything Leah Rochelle writes in the future!

This is really a wonderful story. Oenone is brought back to life (via a museum statue) from the time of her death during the Trojan war by Aphrodite. Aphrodite feels guilty that Oenone’s death was partially her fault. So she is giving her a second chance. To find her husband and find the happiness she so wishes. The downside is that she is brought back in the year 2026 in St. Louis museum. And that her husband is ‘nearby’ and unknown to Oenone, has no recollection of her and their past life. Aphrodite leaves her to figure out the rest on her own.

I received a review readers copy of this story, and this is my honest review. Between the new take on a Greek myth, of a lesser known character from it no less, and the way this was written I was smitten from the start. It really delved into the complexities of life and growth. I also loved that it was more focused on the characters growth rather than pure physical attraction, and that the story had so much depth and detail to really pull you in and keep you engaged!

Even though I’m not a huge fan of Greek mythology, I did enjoy this. Loved the descriptions the author used to explain what modern objects looked like to the main character. The story was straightforward and easy to follow. Enjoyed the character development of Oenone from the beginning to the end. Overall, a fun, cute read.

This was such an interesting concept, I was really excited to explore an Alternate History/Second Chance of Greek History. Oenone has the true to mythology personality of not believing what's right in front of her, frustrating the reader to wish her into practicality, so this was very accurate for the author. Unfortunately, the writing style didn't vibe for me. There was a lot of telling, not showing. Fans of books like Circe and Song of Achilles may enjoy this one!

Such a cute and fast read. Great twist in greek mythology and I just watched The Odyssey so it was great to read this right after that. This gave me 1980s the movie Manniquin vibes with Oenone getting brought back to life and given a second chance at love. I like the character developement and the FMCs growth story!

I adored the premise of a Greek princess being thrust into modern day and given a second chance to find love, from none other than Aphrodite herself. From page one, you feel for Oenone. The hurt of her past, her confusion, and her determination to find Paris, her husband. Paris, however, has been reborn as someone else. And not only will she need to find him, she'll need to make him remember and fall in love with her again. With the help of a compassionate security guard, Oenone slowly gets acclimated to her new life (which was utterly charming and amusing). When Oenone finds Paris, he is not what she expected, and she finds herself questioning what Happy Ever After truly means. A remarkable story of new beginnings, healing, finding where you belong, self-discovery, and sweet romance. Seeing St. Louis and Chicago come alive through the eyes of Oenone was such fun. This book will take you on a journey you'll never forget.
