Kyce Towns struggles with the rejection of being dumped into the foster care system at two days old. If his own mother didn’t want him, how could he possibly open his heart to someone else? His game plan is to steer clear of loving anyone other than the two men who became his brothers through love and not blood. Until fate put her in his path after suffering another obstacle.
Masani Edwards is a nurse who loves caring for her patients and helping them return to their lives healthier than before. What was supposed to be a quick stop through the emergency department became a detour that changed more than her attempt to get some fresh air. After stumbling upon an emotional family and police, Masani finds herself in the thick of things. She learns quickly that sometimes God has a plan bigger than her need to avoid of a man whose heart is hardened.
In a world where unconditional love is a hot commodity and healing is key, Secured in His Heart is a tale of breaking free from the torment and neglect of a person’s heart.
This is book one of the Baxter County Blues, a three-book standalone series. Each installment will have a complete story for three men whose lives have been everything but roses and the women tasked with loving them through their challenges.
I’m not the most religious person but babyyyy the word is ALL UP AND THROUGH THIS STORY I know that. This was a really heart warming and heart breaking tale of the resilience, love and belief in something bigger than yourself required to survive life’s hardships. The only reason is wasn’t 5 star to me was because the brothers were co-dependent which is expected due to their upbringing but I feel like it was glossed over a bit. I also felt like placing that healing responsibility onto Masani removed some of the romantic elements for me. Like I love a supportive partner but I don’t like seeing women being used has rehab/mental health facilities especially given the trauma Masani also dealt with. Like while it’s great that she couldn’t remember everything before meeting her true family I think that’s a heavy and selfish burden to lay on someone you love. I loved that he realized that and took the steps to be the partner that Masani needed. I also wanna know why she was entertaining her coworkers like that lmao like after the Doctor she should’ve been legally blind in that hospital. This book was a beautiful story and it really shows off Riley’s pen and her ability to turn trauma into triumph. I can’t wait for Jawaan’s story
Kyce and Masani were just what each other needed. My heart went out to Kyce and the things he endured. I loved that Masani was there for him and didn’t judge his past. Kyce didn’t have a great upbringing, but I loved the relationship he had with his brothers and Ms. Aretha. Although brief, I liked the cameo from my favorite detective. Can’t wait to read the other brother’s stories. I would recommend this book but be prepared for the word of God, and some heartfelt and emotional moments.
The story had my feelings all over the place. Some of the storyline I anticipated and other parts I could not allow to penetrate my brain. The concept of neglect and shiggity was too deep to allow access. The author told her story, and I am just here for the adventure. You will need to discover on your own if this story is your cup of tea.
Ma'am, the way you wore down my emotions, and my little feelings, is an understatement! 🤯 This was a beautiful read that had some heartbreaking moments, but there was also resilience, trust, love and faith as well to round it out.
Kyce and Masani both found themselves in foster care as children but had drastically different outcomes. Masani found a loving couple, who adopted her and became the parents she always dreamed of. However, Kyce was left in a foster home where all he knew was sadness and pain. 💔 His foster brothers became his brothers, and no one could tell them any different. They were the only thing that made life bearable growing up with Rema and Humphrey.
Fast forward, Kyce is injured and rushed to the hospital, where things aren't looking very good for him. However, a sweet nurse (Masani) is there to calm his frantic brothers and immediately prays over this stranger for his healing. Why do I feel this tightness in my chest when I am near this man, and I have never met him before she wonders. She understands that maybe she was meant to meet Kyce, and that there may be something special about him that she needs to uncover.
When Masani enters Kyce's hospital room, and prays for him, he responds although unconscious. Dubbing her the brother whisperer by Kyce's brothers. 😂 When Kyce recovers and hears Masani's voice, he is mesmerized by her and knows immediately that he needs her presence in his life.
Although the road to happiness was not easy for these two, Kyce worked double time to ensure that he does all he can to keep Masani in his life. As he healed and the evils that he endured during his childhood were revealed, I was gutted!!😤 How can people be given the extreme privilege of raising children, just to harm and traumatize them? 🤬 But God! 🙏🏿 Kyce sought God to help him, as he knew that he couldn't do this alone. He also saw all the good he was doing in Masani's life. All imma say is I need a seat in Pastor Reece's church on Sunday, okay? 👍🏾
I was so caught up with these characters, I did not want it to end. Can't wait for Juwaan, and Kayshon's stories next. Great job! 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
The calm after a storm and a rainbow at the end of the storm. After reading about Kyce’s childhood I was like how much pain and suffering does one have to endure. Masani brought him peace, love and spiritual healing. Kyce and Masani were blessed with the HEA that was needed.
Okay, this was a pretty good story. My first read from this author and I'm sure to pick up some of her other books. I love the fact that the two main characters needed each other 🥰
The one good thing about this book that stands out from the rest is the fact that religion is used heavenly throughout this book. I appreciate that Kyce and Masani bonded and grew their love through prayer and believing in the good Lord. Masani is my girl and her and Kyce makes a dang good couple, I just wished that the book at the end didn’t go by so fast. The ending of this book was definately rushed.
My confliction to this book is that my feelings was all over the place. Most of the storyline I anticipated while the other parts of the story was something that I had to allow to try and process. Anywho, you will have to read this book for yourself and see if it is something that will speak to your book spirit.
This was such a beautiful and heartbreaking story. The trauma that Kyce had to endure as a child is something I would never wish on anyone and then add to the situation that led to him and Masani crossing paths and this book had me near tears, but with as many heartbreaking and gut wrenching moments that Kyce relived through his therapy, the prayers and covering that Masani had over him had me smiling from ear to ear. Masani was such a blessing to this man and you could tell these two were placed in each other’s lives for a reason. Their connection and chemistry was beautiful and endearing. I loved their moments together and I loved the bond between Kyce and his brothers. I’m excited for this series and I can’t wait for the next book in the series.
I would also like to caution reading this book if you are easily triggered by statutory rape and child abuse of any kind because the amount of trauma and grief from these topics in this book is heavy. If you are mentally okay with reading these topics and seeing the rainbow that appears on the other side of the storm that was Kyle’s childhood, I think you will enjoy this story as much as I did. But as always, protect your peace and your mental and prepare yourself for this journey if you decide to partake in this story.
This book? PERFECT. Absolutely perfect. I’m not a super religious person (I’ve had my struggles and questions) but the way the author blended faith and real life felt so natural and comforting. I usually stay farrrrr away from Christian romance because listen… I read romance for the nasty, the dirty, the filthy, the sinful….and I don’t want Bible verses and backshots in the same chapter.
BUT THIS? This was the most beautiful blend of both worlds.
I loved the way she prayed for him. The way she spoke life into him. The way she covered him in the spirit while still being a real, relatable woman. There’s a scripture somewhere about a praying wife helping guide her husband spiritually whatever it is, this book embodied it PERFECTLY.
He’s more worldly. She’s rooted in church. And somehow they meet in the middle in such a genuine way.
And let’s talk about her character… the way she moves with faith, the way she trusts God with her life and love, the way she remains soft and believing it was beautiful to see. I felt that.
Now… when it comes to Kyce’s foster parents? Why aren’t they dead yet? I read book two first and I wanted them gone back then. One down is NOT enough. BOTH of them need to go meet their maker immediately. No delays. No sequels. PACK IT UP.
This book had my emotions EVERYWHERE. ALL over the place. In the BEST way. It reminded me that even if I’m not living the perfect Christian life, even if I’m not as close to God as I want to be, I’m still not outside of His grace. It made me reflect. It made me hopeful. It made me feel seen. I love books that do that.
And when he started going to church? Baby… that was THE icing on the cake.
The way this author handled trauma, healing, vulnerability, faith, love EVERYTHING was so tender and intentional. I adored it.
Foremost, to know someone was capable of inflict such harm, pain & trauma until a child. Sorry, but not, their life should be a perpetual state of torment too 🤷🏾♀️‼️Please seek professional help all sexual deviants, pedophiles, predators & or their co conspirators‼️Why⁉️…(Fundamentally, I know why, (because they can). I just don’t/won’t ever understand their logic or justification to hide🙂↔️‼️) Nevertheless, it’s heart wrenching, to read and hear a man’s audible cries (under general circumstances). But more so the tears sustained from his recollection of just expressing a natural human curiosity (of a child) “why didn’t my mother love me?” while being exploited & violated by people responsible to fill that parental void 🤬‼️Hmmm 🤔😭, I’m equally discussed, disturbed & conflicted by the horrific foster care experiences endured by Kyce (and his love brothers) in “Secured In His Heart (Baxter County Blues - Book 1) (4.5⭐️’s). Yet, I’m overjoyed by the compassions and obedience of Masani and parents that understands the power of intercessory prayer (without ceasing) for themselves, their immediate fellow family members, the community and especially the providential prayer for strangers in need. Prayer encourages, provides instruction, guidance, hope changes things, circumstances & or people. Both Masani & Kyce are living witnesses of the transformative powers of prayer, restoration of trust, redefining family and their unity …rescued by love 💕‼️
This book was AMAZING in every way possible!!!…The power of prayer, healing, feeling and love of the ppl that you pick to be your family!!!…I wish I could give this book more than 5 stars!!!… The prayers throughout this book had me rocking, and raising my hands!!!… I love how Masani immediately went into prayer for a man she never knew, didn’t know what led him to be in the place he was, but her heart and mind spk those words without hesitation!!!… Her mother, followed up letting her know that God’s presence and request of her was bigger than she would ever know!!!… She carried that weight until it became too heavy with Kyce last revelation!!!… Kyce a man who was hurt by the adults that were suppose to guide and protect him!!!… His willingness to uncover what hurt him, what left him damaged and looking for an outlet!!!…He didn’t think he would find a love of his own!!!… His apology about putting all his heaviness on Masani was beautiful and with her understanding heart, they moved fwd!!!… Can’t wait to see what is next for this family circle has me excited to read a series!!!…
Star level: 3.5 stars Spice level: 🌶️ Trope: strangers to lovers, found family, religious Trigger warnings: child abuse/ neglect, past trauma Fav quotes: “For the first time in my life, you make me want to let go of the heaviness within my burdens. Talking to you isn’t always easy because my anger can often get the best of me, but I still want to do it even when you go silent after my harsh delivery.” “It’s like seeing a rainbow on the ocean after a hurricane. As soon as I think she’s ready, I’m locking her ass down,” About the book: This book is about Masani and Kyce and how they meet due to event that lands him is the icu. Even thought Kyce wasn’t his pt she felt a pull to him and a stronger feeling to pray over him and his strength to survive. This was a slow pace romance but to me the book lacked a lot of romance. I really did like this book, but what I didn’t like is that I felt like a lot of his trauma and upbringing was on her shoulders to help fix him and this was the strong focus point of the story and the romance part took a backseat. I know it’s a short story so the author couldn’t fit everything in the story but I do wish’s it was more date and romance. She was also adopted yeah they didn’t have the same upbringing but they also just skated over the topic. Now I am glad he manned up and got an actual therapist and took all the pressure off her, started going to church, and him and his brothers became apart of her family. This was a lovely story.
This book requires some patience and emotional maturity. The MMC and his two brothers were exposed to some vile things in foster care. The FMC is also a product of the system with a much different experience and eventually being adopted by a loving couple. The story is about how the two main characters are drawn together and develop a relationship after a traumatic event. The story is well written with enough depth to move through some complex issues in 200 pages without missing the salient points. I know the stories of the other two brothers will be explained in upcoming works and look forward to seeing them.
I discovered Riley Baxter quite by accident. If some new Riley Baxter content hits my feed, I put everything else on pause. I really enjoy her character development and the tales from City of Ribax!
Wow!! This book is very good. It sheds so much light on the foster care system and how it fails kids. Most of the kids are already at a disadvantage, but when you add physical and mental abuse to what they already have going on, it makes me angry.
Kyce was truly messed up from the things he endured with Rema and Humphrey's trifling asses. They were absolutely disgusting. And, even though Kyce was successful, educated, and handsome, he still felt unworthy. Masani saw him differently. She was drawn to him and knew she had to help. She knew the assignment and followed it through. She became known as the "brother whisperer".
Riley this is good shit! You did your big writing thing with this story. I can't wait to read the rest of the series.
Kyce and Masani cross paths when Kyce was brought into the hospital where Masani works due to a injury. The way that Masani was drawn to Kyce was ordained. Kyce had gone through sexual and mental abuse during his childhood while in foster care, and he needed Masani in his life so she could pray for and pray over him. I'm glad that he decided to work on his mental and spiritual health. I loved the brotherly relationship between Kyce, Kayshon and Jawaan. They loved each other and stuck together through thick and thin. Their humor and mischievousness had me cracking up. I can't wait to find out who the brothers' women are going to be because it's going to take some special ones for them.
Whew Chil, this story right here was full of so much trauma. My heart truly broke for Kyce cause he had truly been through so much trauma. From his mom, to foster care, to them trifling AZZ pedophiles the Humphrey’s🤬🤬🤬. Him and his brothers truly got the short end of the stick. This book shined light on a subject that isn’t talked about enough "SA of a boy/young men".
I was proof when Kyce decided to seek help through Pastor Reese who referred him to an amazing Therapist. I thought his trauma ended with the things he told Masani😔. Then he just kept unloading and I’m like JESUS 💔😭.
The book kinda spotted up a lot in the end, but it was still a good read.
A traumatic childhood. The oldest of his brothers. Handsome and successful. There’s an accident and he ends up in the hospital. Her hospital. She was his nurse. She prayed for him. She prayed over him. There was a pull to continue to be there for him in the background. He woke up. He thanked her. She ran.
2 complete opposites. One damaged from his past and one who healed through love and prayer. They built a friendship. Then a bond. Then a relationship. She tried to help heal him but it became too much. He then did the work necessary to heal for him and for them to become forever. He knew the only thing he wanted to do was love her. This is a painful yet beautiful story of healing and love. They persevered.
There are not many books that I have read that touched me in a spiritual realm. Thank you, Riley B. for writing this story. It showed so much of a relationship that you can have with God and being your true self. It also showed true love between the main couple. I loved how this book was written and how Kyce worked through his trauma and struggles that he went through in his life.
Riley, this one is a keeper for me and one that I will read again and again!
Now, here is the question...how long do we have to wait for book two? ( I don't care which of Kyce brother it will be) 😃😄
Wow, is all I can say! What a story and what a life Kyce endured as a child & teen. I did a lot of crying, but rejoiced in knowing that he had an angel and friend in Masani.
Love is patience, and love is kind!
What a beautiful relationship they developed, and I'm glad he received that professional help he so needed, in order to nurture and secure not only his mental, but his love as well.
Kyce and his brothers showed that they didn't need to be blood to be brothers. I can't wait until the next book in this series.
I wasn’t expecting this story line but I enjoyed it Masani a women of faith is drawn to a situation that healing prayers…. Kyce a man who’s fostered upbringing was dark…a bond his formed when Kyces brothers only want her to help soothe him while in a coma….this book touches on so much but I love that faith and therapy were the choice that Kyce choose to heal I love how the brothers stuck together and not go to the streets but to college great read on to the next
A wonderful story of overcoming deep rooted childhood trauma with the love of a woman of faith and forgiveness Supporting characters KayShon and Jawaan, Kyce brothers were tight with each other The friendship and faith that is weaved through the story helps you to deal with some of the sadness but it also gives you hope Riley really gives us something special to think about when we encounter hardships and major challenges and disappointments in our lives that when u place your faith in the right place you will overcome
Kyce knew nothing about love because he was given up two days after birth.... Manasi was adopted at eight years old but God gave her a steady home and wonderful God fearing parents. Kyce was shot by a crazy person and Manasi is a nurse and when she see how his brothers are losing it she steps in to find out how their brother is doing. Who knew these two souls would become one... I love this book and can't wait for the next brothers book😍
Whew. Talk about heavy. That said, Kyce and Masani were meant to cross paths. The parallels yet major differences with their upbringing made this story feel like kismet to me. Masani was selfless and it was easy to see how she fell for Kyce. Their love was patient and it was beautiful watching it blossom. I’m very interested in his brothers’ stories because I have feeling that there’s so much more to unpack.
I love the way Riley Baxter delivered this story of love. Kyce lived a messed up life during his childhood that brought tears to my eyes. But the love of his God-sent Woman brought light, love and security into his Heart. Please get this book. Because I am going to see right now if there are books on Kyle's two brothers. Since they also made requests for God-sent Women. It was just that good!!!
I am a firm believer that God places people in our path that we can be a blessing too and be blessed by. This is exactly what happened between Masani and Kyce. I don’t want to give away the story but just know that you will be truly blessed delving into this story. Riley Baxter you did your thing with this one and I can’t until we get to hear Jawaan and Kayshon stories..,
Fantastic, I loved Kyce and Masani. I laughed, cried, got angry and praised God. Loved Kyce''s brothers, can't wait for their stories to be told. This story touches on abandonment, mental abuse, child abuse and the power of God. Loved how the author incorporated God's word. The brothers are all alphas with professional jobs with a hint of thugs😀😀. You have to read this. Kudos to the author👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
This was a cute book. Kyce and his brothers went through a lot. I’m surprised they weren’t made to deal with their actions. The daddy having a heart attack wasn’t suffering enough for me. They both needed to go. Masani was sweet and was just what kyce needed. It was a heavy told to place solely on her so I’m glad kyce got a therapist. The shooting was weird but I guess that had to happen in order for kyce to meet Masani. I might read the next one.
I really love this book it pulled me in even though it can be disheartening when you learn bout the main characters past but with his girl by his side they nothing he would loose and I really was pulled in when I saw the up and down of the main characters and how they are their for each other. The way they meet was unconditional but her sticking with him and checking on him and praying for him and introducing him to a side that could help him heal through his trauma.
