(Descriptions found at end of my review)

Should I read in order?
It’s not totally necessary here – this book is happening at similar time to Charlotte’s Control. This is in the same world as Sim’s Control series and School of Enlightenment (start with her newsletter freebie, Roslynn’s Rebellion, to start at the very beginning. (It is also a part of the loosely connected Lyon’s Den series, which can be read in any order)

Basic plot:
The Black Widow engages Belle in restoring Luke to his full potential while promising her matchmaking services...

Give this a try if you want:
- If I had to guess, I’d say late Regency/Georgian (this is after the events of The School of Enlightenment series, which was about 1817/1818)
- age gap – but she’s older
- hero is taller than her by several inches
- class difference – hero is an earl’s son and heroine is a retired courtesan
- lots of focus on recovery – this hero starts the story as an alcoholic and with the heroine’s help attempts to overcome
- close proximity – these two stay together at the heroine’s house for much of the book
- furry chested hero
- mid to higher steam – 3 full scenes

Ages:
- heroine is 32, hero is 22

First line:
Isabella Rossi, Belle to her closest friends, was a master at controlling her expressions.

My thoughts:
Ok, first I have to say how much I love this cover! I mean, I am always a fool for Floyd but with the chest hair tease...mmmmmm.

Anyway, this is my first book of the Lyon’s Den world and I am loving the idea of a loosely connected plot that authors can play around with. I am really curious to see what other authors have done with this! (If you have a fave of the series so far, let me know so I can give it a try sometime!)

I have really liked Sims books in the past, especially Charlotte’s Control (which Charlotte and William are side characters in this one). And this one I also found fun – we have an older heroine that knows what she wants in some ways, but also is struggling with truly appreciating her own worth due to her past. And Luke has plenty of his own demons to overcome. These two together are really delightful – they balance each other out. I loved how Luke really took the time to let Belle figure out who she was and what she wants – she didn’t need to perform for him.

Thanks to the Netgalley and the author for a copy of this ebook and this is my freely given opinion.

This is a part of the Lyon's Den series, but it would be helpful if you read book 1 of the Control series, Charlotte's Control, because the two main characters in this book, and some background on them are denoted in Charlotte's Control.

In Lyon's Lover, we have a forced proximity historical romance with differing social status, reverse age gap, family conflict, and addiction themes. Isabella Rossi is a talented and sought after courtesan, who has decided to retire. Thanks to her friendship with her financially savvy friend, Charlotte, she has accumulated enough wealth to not need to seek and cater to male benefactors anymore, and can use it instead to forward her own goals. She seeks out the help of the Black Widow, owner of the Lyon's Den for her matchmaking services. But, in addition in lieu of part of her fee, Mrs. Dove-Lyons contracts Isabella to provide a service that she as successfully plied before. Not as a courtesan, but as someone who has successfully aided another in overcoming an addiction. The Widow has a problem client that she wants Isabella to help overcome his particular vices.

Despite having some doubts of this particular request, Isabella agrees, and is particularly chagrined when she finds out that the addict in question is a particularly loathsome, wastrel friend of her best friend's paramour. A boy she has met before, and who failed to make any positive impression on her because of his immaturity and poor behaviour. Luke Lynwood is a young man on the wrong path. Having lost his mother at an early age, and unable to earn the love and approval of his father, the Earl, he runs down the path of dissipation, preferring to recklessly gamble and drink his days away. But he gambles and loses too much one night and ends up caught up in the Black Widows schemes and forced into the not so loving arms of Isabella Rossi.

This starts out with both parties being more enemies than anything else, with Isabella seeing Luke as an immature, drunken wastrel and neither liking, trusting, nor expecting much from him. Luke lacks any sense of direction, and sense of self, and having nothing else, settled on drinking, gambling, and hanging with the wrong set of people to get through his days, and avoids responsibilities, especially having to deal with his fractured relationship with his father. But as he sobers up, he starts to gain a sense of accomplishment, and sense of self and a direction for his life. He and Isabella, despite an ignoble beginnings, do develop a friendship, and burgeoning attraction for each other. But Isabella doesn't want an affair or another patron. What she wants is marriage, and to raise a family outside of Town, so that she can leave her past behind. When she returns to the widow with the Luke, Mrs. Dove-Lyons throws her plans for a loop again when she presents to her chosen match for Isabella - the newly sober Luke.

This is not the whole of the story. Isabella and Luke are forced to deal with her qualms about their relationship, with their differing social status, as well as with her past and his family issues as well before they can find their HEA. Not to give to much away, but there are some interesting elements about Isabella's past that overlap with Luke's family as well, and at times, as a reader, there were some cringy moments on thinking about them. But I found the evolution of Luke and Isabella's relationship and his growth to be sweet, with a lot of expected heat as they allowed their attraction to bloom.

The first book I’ve read by the author & it won’t be the last. It was different, it was entertaining & it was very enjoyable. I loved Bella & Luke both had their issues & both thought they weren’t good enough. I loved how their relationship changed & how their feelings deepened. There’s a surprise to them but not so much to the reader – I loved their reactions & also what ensued. A very well written captivating romance

Family, Secrets, Emotional, Surprises:
What a fascinating and pleasurable story this turned out to be.
Finally, a really good gripping deeply emotional and surprising Lyon story.
Both characters are most interesting in their own right.
Belle is tired on being a courtesan and would like to marry, start a family and gain some respect, but how you say?
Enter Mrs. Dove Lyon.
This is not the usual way the Black widow works her magic for a client to gain a husband but if that is what Belle wants, she will need to do what the black widow insists.
Taking on a challenge to rehabilitate Luke, an incorrigible wastrel and acholic has both characters thrown together into a fast-paced journey.
Will Belle be able to help Luke and keep him sober?
Will she be able to keep away from the handsome man who tantalizes and fascinates her with his sexy innuendos, and his desirous looks
Will the unknown surprise send her away or will they be able to find a happy ever after.
This is a story that captured my heart, and the passion had the pages smoldering. Worthy of a Lyons Den book and a lady's fan is suggested.
My first time reading this author and it was a delight that I will look forward to reading more of Ms. Sims books
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy for my hones t thoughts and opinion.

I loved Maggie’s take on the Black Widow of Whitehall. I have read a number of the Lyon’s Den stories and love the connected theme, each author creating their own experience within this mad matchmaking scheme. Belle’s reputation and profession give her a unique impression of the me of the ton. In a way she has become slightly jaded and needs much encouragement to see past her own perceptions. It is ironic that it is the courtesan who is passing judgment, while the titled Lords of the story have nothing but acceptance. I loved the dynamic between Belle & Luke, like a good tennis match they volleyed control back & forth in all their interactions. It was enlightening watching Luke come out of his addictions and embrace his maturity, finally seeing his own potential. We are our own worst enemy, and often the biggest obstacle to our successes. I truly enjoyed North’s place in this story. I’ll admit I was originally hoping for one outcome, convinced it would be the twist to a great story. Always impressed with Maggie Sims’ power of persuasion, she skillfully guided me away from those thoughts and fully on board with the inevitable outcome. Belle & Luke complimented each other in all their best ways, helping each other to grow and accept their own worth. A truly fabulous story of learning one’s self worth and having the courage to embrace it.

I enjoyed this story so much! What’s not to love about a courtesan deciding to retire and looking to settle down with a husband? There were so many things in Belle’s eyes working against her and Luke and yet I found their story believable and dare I say heartwarming?

Belle seeks out the help of a matchmaker, the mysterious Mrs. Bessie Dove-Lyon, the Black Widow of Whitehall, overseer of a very popular gaming hell, for finding herself a husband that will be accepting of her past career and also desire her for companionship. In exchange for helping her, Belle is asked to prevent the worst drunken gambler from frequenting the Lyon’s Den and irresponsibly gambling away his money. Luke wants as little to do with Belle as she does with an entitled man, but it seems the Black Widow knows what’s best for both of them. Please be aware of trigger warnings for alcoholism and detoxing when picking this book up. However, I thought it was so refreshing to see a forced proximity trope that didn’t follow the traditional plot lines. It would seem Belle is in a more superior position of helping Luke, but I felt that the growth and maturity Luke showed throughout the novel put him on even footing with Belle.
I loved how in the intimacy scenes, Luke made sure that Belle did not feel as if she was “performing” for him. He put her first in so many ways and took the time to listen. If you enjoy age gap, mistaken identity, and non-virginal MCs, this book will definitely be for you. Maggie Sims can definitely write a steamy book and I found the interactions between Belle and Luke to be both fun and heartfelt. I received an early copy from the publisher. All opinions are my own.

Clodpate & the Wench
I’ve been waiting for this one, and it was absolutely scrumptious!

~ Isabella & Luke ~
She’s a retired courtesan ready to settle down, marry and have kids, and he’s this university drop-out, good for nothing lordling, roaming around London’s gaming hells and brothels, drowning his daddy issues. She enlisted the Lyon’s Den’s Black Widow to find her a husband, and he’s just lost his final bet against the house... As part of her fee, the Widow demands Bella to take Luke under her wing and clean him up.

What follows is a five star course in how to train your whiny wastrel whelp and make him a man. Except... the cub comes with the most Tantalising Toothsome T and the heart of a lion, and, as it turns out, even a pro has a soft spot.

He needs to face his failures, his future and his father. She’s strict, stern and cares - a lot - and it takes him a beat to accept her tough love approach, but it works, he finds his footing. As his confidence grows, hers starts to wobble - the balance slowly shifts, and it’s so beautifully done. The setting is exquisitely intimate, there’s amazing growth for both MCs and the twist near the end was brilliant - I was so completely immersed in their story, I never saw it coming. Excellent!

This story moved me with its vulnerability and honesty. It was the perfect mix of naughty & nice, teasing & trust, sizzle & soft. It was enthralling and witty with a ton of heart and 100% pure Maggie Sims magic. A reverse age-gap, class difference, forced proximity, enemies-to-lovers, stand-by-you, steal-your-boots-and-tie-you-to-the-bedpost, let-me-serve-you, slow burn steamy delight, and a bloody marvellous read!

PS: it overlaps with Charlotte's Control and, while not strictly necessary, I would recommend reading that book first - as an extended exquisite intro 😉

Seriously though, run, don’t walk, and grab your copy!

Luke Lynwood is an alcoholic, he just hasn't realized it yet. Isabella Rossi is a retired courtesan, hoping Bessie Dove-Lyon can find her a match. Bessie introduces the two at he Lyon's Den and proposes a deal: Isabella can help Luke get sober, and she'd find Isabella a good match. This is an excellent addition to the Lyon's Den Series, and Sims' "Control Series." It is stand-alone, but knowing the backstory for Luke's best friends, Nate and Will, makes the story that much more enjoyable. Sims writes steamy love scenes you don't want to get caught reading in public, and this book is no exception. The banter and chemistry between the two main characters bounces off the pages. There is always a HEA in this series, but I wasn't sure how they'd overcome one heck of a twist to get there, but they do.

The alcoholic story line was tastefully done, not sugar coated. It may be a trigger, but being part of a family with several members suffering from this disease some parts were difficult to read.

Overall I loved this book and I highly encourage you to read it.
Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC.

This story in Lyon's Den series is a unique and delightful forced proximity and an age gap love story. A desire to change one's life and begin another leads to Mrs. Dove-Lyon. A man who's lost his way and needs to find a new path. After an interesting and strange idea that has many twists, humor, and wit, that was very entertaining, including delicious passion, a beautiful love was formed. The ending was lovely. I highly recommend reading!

Thank you Net Galley. This was a fun read. Belle goes to the matchmaker to find her a husband who will be able to live with her past. She is asked to help Luke overcome his drinking problems. She helps him and they are getting along well but he falls in love with her, and she loves him, but he is to inherit from an Earl, and she is afraid of hurting his reputation. He has to make up with his father who was one of her clients. The ending is rather a surprise.

Maggie Sims is one of my favourite authors and I was so excited to read this next book of hers. It does not disappoint. You know it’s going to be a great read when the main characters refer to each other as “Wench” and “Clodpate”! It’s a wonderful enemies to lovers story, reverse age gap, close proximity story.

This book has characters from her previous book “Charlotte’s Control”, which is another outstanding read not connected with this series but it’s not necessary to have read it before this one as they are secondary characters in this book but I would still recommend reading it because it’s a great read.

Isabella (Belle) Rossi is a no nonsense talking, ex courtesan who is now looking for a husband to settle down and have children with. At thirty two years old she knows she has to find a husband soon so employs a mysterious and picky matchmaker, Bessie Dove-Lyon aka The Black Widow. Belle is questioned about what she is looking for in a husband. After her requirements are taken, Bessie makes a non negotiable request to assist a man overcome his difficulties as she has experience with helping others with problems.

Luke Lynwood is a privileged, titled man boy with a drinking problem, a debt problem and daddy issues after losing his mother as a boy. Now twenty two years old, things are catching up with him and he is assigned to Isabella by The Black Widow, to whom he owes a debt to and unless he wants Bessie to contact his father regarding his debt, he will stay under Isabella’s instruction until he is sober. The problem is they met a couple of months ago and didn’t start off on the best of terms. They only remember each other as “Wench” and “Clodpate”.

Although the physical attraction to each other is evident from the start, boundaries have to be maintained in order for Luke to conquer his demons. This involves Belle bringing out some of her light bondage straps from previous lovers to keep Luke restrained at night while she sleeps. As they spend time together they realise they have things in common and enjoy each other’s company. Belle challenges Luke throughout and he teaches her not be so serious and makes her laugh. Luke is given the task of finding a purpose by Belle and Luke challenges Belle’s self perception and helps her realise her worth, along with some other no nonsense talking women Isabella knows. Isabella feels her past will influence and hinder her future but strong words to her make her question her feelings of inadequacy. Luke discovers that life with without alcohol isn’t bad and gives him an opportunity to find his purpose in life.

I loved the shocking revelation in the book that I didn’t see coming until it was announced and loved reading how it all played out.

Maggie Sims’ writing style and content speaks to my heart and makes it sing! I would give this book more stars if I could. I would recommend this book to anyone who just enjoys reading. It has something for everyone in it.

If you are familiar with Maggie's works, you know she writes a steamy historical romance with an excellent story and a bit of kink. This one still hits with the steam and the story but does not have the typical kink aspect BUT (hear me out!) it fits the characters and the larger Lyon's Den series. More on that later.

We first met Luke and Belle in Charlotte's Control and immediately sensed the dislike between Luke and Belle (I think I've earned the right to call her "Belle."). She calls him Clodpate (fitting) and he calls her Wench (slightly less fitting but still very cute and funny). Belle is about ten years older than Luke and has just retired from being a courtesan. Luke is floundering but also addicted to spirits and gaming. When tasked by the head of the Lyon's Den to help Luke, Belle reluctantly agrees.

Maggie really allows the characters their vulnerability in this novel. Belle sees Luke at his lowest points and Luke sees Belle for who she really is and who she wants to be. Both let their guards down with one another because they don't think they'll see each other again and have little to lose. Belle also feels somewhat superior to Luke because of her age and because she is trying to help him conquer addiction. And while addiction is part of this narrative, it does not overwhelm or detract from love story. Luke and Belle are drawn to one another, very attracted to one another, despite claiming to dislike the other. Which is likely another reason they don't mind revealing who they are since the other has already decided they will never be friends. However, they cannot resist temptation. It would be easy for an author to let Luke's dependency on Belle be the reason he falls for her, but Maggie doesn't let that happen, thankfully. Therefore when they do fall, it just feels RIGHT. It feels natural and real and not another addiction or dependency for Luke or another contractual relationship for Belle.

As for the spice: YES, it is there. Lyon's Lover is very sensual and builds on the tension between the two characters. When they finally do join, you can feel the urgency and need. There is no major "kink" in this installment but again, it makes sense. Belle no longer wants to play games to entertain a man for his pleasure but wants to be herself in (and out of) the bedroom, whatever they may look like--she's still trying to figure that out. Luke doesn't want her to be anyone but her true self as well. Does that mean they won't experiment later? Likely not. It's alluded to.

If you've read Charlotte's Control, you will want to read this as it takes place at the same time and we get to see what Belle was up to while Charlotte and William were finding their HEA. But what about Nate, creator of "intimate objects"? Hmmm, yes...what about Nate, Maggie? I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Isabella Rossi is a well-known courtesan who has decided to retire her career. Belle longs to find companionship in a husband with whom she can have children, and is aware that several obstacles stand in her way as a former member of the demimonde, but she knows exactly who can help. She approaches a woman known as the Black Widow who not only owns the Lyons Den gaming hell, but is renowned for her matchmaking abilities. Belle doesn't think she has a super tall order, so she's a little surprised when the Black Widow agrees to help on one condition: she will find Belle a suitable husband if Belle helps Luke Lynwood, the heir to an Earldom, overcome his addiction.

Luke is the posterchild for "down and out". He is rarely sober, up to his eyeballs in gambling debts, and at risk of being cut off by his father. After imbibing and increasing his debt even further, the owner of the Lyons Den, offers him a deal he truly cannot afford to turn down: shake his vices for debt forgiveness. Belle and Luke met once before and neither one is thrilled by this prospect, but they reluctantly agree.

I thought this was a great forced proximity/enemies-to-lovers romance that very respectfully handles addiction. As someone with first hand experience of caring for a person with addiction, I appreciated the inclusion of each detail that expressed the struggle of alcohol detoxification and recovery even if Luke's rehabilitation is handled a bit quickly. Both MCs are bound by pasts and societal expectations that make a future seem nearly impossible. One obstacle seems particularly insurmountable, but Maggie has a way of developing incredibly vulnerable characters that makes you absolutely believe things could work out. While their relationship begins on shaky ground, it develops into something really lovely.

This novel is a part of a larger Dragonblade series that I have not read, but also did not feel I *had* to read to enjoy this story. Lyon's Lover occurs in tandem with Maggie's last book, Charlotte's Control. While I don't necessarily think you *have* to read that one to pick up this story either, I'll tell you right now that you absolutely will not regret starting there before you dive in. Maggie Sims is always an auto-read author for me. If you're looking for an extra steamy, well written historical romance that's a little k!nky, I *highly* recommend checking out her backlog.

Thank you to the publisher for a copy of this eARC via NetGalley. As always, opinions are both honest and my own.

This was a good enemies to lovers story with a lot going on. There is addiction, family conflict, class differences, and an older woman/younger man as themes that kept me turning the pages.

Isabella (Belle) is a retired courtesan looking for a change. After a successful career and intelligent investing, she has more than enough to live comfortably. But Belle wants a husband, children, and a life away from her past. She asks Mrs. Dove-Lyon to work her matchmaking magic for her. Mrs. Dove-Lyon is willing but has an unusual requirement. She knows Belle successfully helped a young woman beat an addiction and wants Belle to help a problem client overcome his vices.

Luke Lynwood is well down the road to ruin. He lost his mother at an early age and has a tense relationship with his father. Luke spends his days and nights drinking and gambling until the night he loses far too much at the Lyon's Den. Mrs. Dove-Lyon tells him he has a choice: get sober, or she writes to his father about his debts.

Though Belle is not happy with the mission, she is determined to carry it out to the best of her ability. Luke is very uncooperative at first, and he and Belle clash constantly. But after a few days, Luke begins to feel the results of her tough love approach. Neither one expects the sparks of attraction that flare up between them. Luke is an accomplished flirt who enjoys getting under Belle's skin. He also begins to appreciate her efforts on his behalf, and his confidence grows. I liked how Belle challenged him to take control of his life and future.

I enjoyed watching their relationship develop. From antagonists to friends to lovers, it wasn't an easy journey. Once Luke finished his "program" and was cleared by Mrs. Dove-Lyon, they were in for another shock. Mrs. Dove-Lyon reveals that her choice of husband for Belle is none other than Luke himself! Belle is horrified. She cares for Luke but fears that her reputation will cause him irreparable harm, and she resists any attempts to convince her otherwise. Luke takes to the idea quickly. But there is one other obstacle to a happy ending for them, and it shows up as a twist near the end.

The ending was terrific. I loved how Belle's past and future came together unexpectedly. It warmed my heart to see the support she received and the difference it made to her view of the future.

This lovely addition to The Lyon's Den series weaves a captivating tale of redemption, second chances, and the tangled webs of past sins. The story of Isabella Rossi and Luke Lynwood—two people from vastly different worlds—comes together in an unexpected yet compelling romance.
Isabella, once a renowned courtesan, yearns to leave behind her colorful past and embrace a more traditional life. The pain of her past is well-crafted, and her desire for a future filled with love and stability feels genuine. Her quest for a fresh start leads her to the mysterious Black Widow, a powerful figure in the world of matchmaking, and thus begins her reluctant partnership with the troubled Lord Luke Lynwood.
Luke, on the other hand, is a man of self-destruction, immersed in alcohol, gambling, and avoidance of his duties as heir to an earldom. His downward spiral is poignant and troubling, making his journey toward redemption both painful and real. The transformation he undergoes under Isabella's watch is beautiful to see. Their forced partnership, which begins with tension and reluctance, slowly grows into a deep connection as they help each other face their darkest fears.
The plot is intricately woven, balancing character growth with romance and a touch of holiday magic. The chemistry between Isabella and Luke is slow-burning but utterly satisfying, especially as their vulnerabilities are revealed. Both characters have flaws that make them relatable, and their evolving relationship provides a heartwarming exploration of healing from the past.
In conclusion, this is a heartfelt and evocative romance, rich with character-driven storytelling. It’s a perfect read for those who love tales of personal transformation, forgiveness, and the magic of love set against the backdrop of the holiday season.

Lyon’s Lover by Maggie Sims is another entry into the Lyon’s Den Connected World. Isabella Rossi had been a successful member of the demimonde for many years. Now she wished to marry. She wanted children. She would like to be loved, but that was not a requirement. She had saved plenty of money, so that was not an issue either. She came to Mrs. Dove-Lyon because she was the best. Mrs Dove Lyon could find her a husband, a merchant perhaps? Mrs Dove-Lyon agreed but first asked a favor. She knew Belle had successfully weaned a young woman off drugs and saw her successfully married to a country vicar. She had a young man who owed her a lot of money, primarily because he drank. She wanted Belle to wean him off his addiction. His name was Luke Lynwood and before this was over it was going to get very complicated.

Luke was a likable young man who had no self-control. He had left Oxford with out mentioning it to his father, and now he had been drunk for weeks. And losing money he didn’t have. Belle liked him but she was not going to put up with any nonsense. She needed him to get sober so Mrs. Dove-Lyon could find her a husband. She was not getting any younger. One night she awoke to the sound of something crashing: it was Luke looking in the kitchen for cooking sherry. At that point she handcuffed him to her bed and he slept on the floor for many nights. He was falling for her just as she was falling for him. What hard would one more fling do? It was a wholly entertaining story of a younger man (22) and an older woman(32) who did well together until the tables were turned. Clever plot twist.

I was invited to read Lyon’s Lover by Dragonblade. All thoughts and opinions are mine. #Netgalley #Dragonblade #MaggieSims #LyonsLover

I really enjoyed the story. I'm not usually a big fan of reverse age gap stories with dominant heroines and submissive heroes, but Luke and Belle have wonderful chemistry and are good for each other. I knew from the beginning what twist the story would have so I wasn't sure at first what outcome I would want, but am very happy with the ending. The plot is well written and interesting, with added class disparity, reformed hero and close proximity tropes, an addiction withdrawal, some steamy love scenes and very likeable main and secondary characters.

Former courtesan Isabella "Belle" Rossi seeks help from Mrs Dove-Lyon to find a husband. She longs for children and companionship and wants to leave her old life behind. The Widow of Whitehall agrees to help her, but part of her payment, however, is to help a young, profligate lordling overcome his addiction to alcohol and gambling.
Luke Lynwood is the heir to an earldom. Unlike his best friends, he has no goals or purpose in life and shuns responsibility. Brought up by his strict father and failed at university, he spends his life gambling and drinking himself into oblivion. When he loses another game at Lyon's Den, he is carted off to Isabella's house and is no longer allowed to drink. Isabella helps him overcome his addictions and slowly Luke learns to appreciate the small successes in his life. The two are strongly attracted to each other, but their past, their different social status and the age difference seem insurmountable for Belle...

If you like stories about couples who find their happy ending despite all obstacles and differences, you will enjoy this book!

I have not read much from this author , but this story is DELICIOUS! Luke is a wastrel who believes his father, The Earl doesn’t care for him. Belle is a celebrated courtesan who wants to retire and raise a family. Enter Mrs. Dove-Lyon, who , with her majestic ways manages to convince Belle she must help Luke before Mrs. Dove-Lyon will help her find her a mate. I was enthralled to see how the author described his withdrawal and his absolute NEED for alcohol . (Though I feel it would probably take a lot longer than noted in the story). The reverse age-gap was an interesting mix and I adored how Luke handled not only that, but how he made sure he was getting Belle’s real responses and not her practiced ones. The twist was a surprise and added great depth and angst to the story. Seeing Belle’s change was beautiful and Eleanor’s view of the real problem putting it into focus from Belle was wonderful! Steamy love scenes and a sigh-worthy ending makes this book one to devour!

I received this book for free and these are my own opinions

Ready to settle down and retire from a successful career as a courtesan, Isabella Rossi seeks the matchmaking services of the Black Widow, Ms. Dove-Lyon. However, in exchange, Ms. Dove-Lyon asks Isabella to assist an indebted earl’s son, Luke, with his alcohol addiction. Forced to spend days together, their intolerance for each other blossoms into friendship and possibly more, if only Isabella would allow it. She is reluctant to start a family with a much younger, reckless rake, even though he commits to prove to her he’s more than an aimless gambler. Sims’ latest regency romance connects the Lyon’s Den series to the world of her Control series, and like Sims’ other novels, the spicy tryst is only part of Isabella and Luke’s tale. To fully be together, they must learn to accept their pasts, create their own futures, and trust their hearts. With cameos from characters in other Sims’ novels, this latest story is a welcome addition to her ever-expanding world and is a steamy holiday read.

Age difference and taboo plot

3.5/5 This one was a new one for me, a newly retired courtesan that falls in love with the son of her former lover. This dynamic didn’t bother me and I enjoyed it being something different.

I enjoyed the story and the path for each MC to overcome their demons. Overall though, this story missed the mark for me. I didn’t connect with their love story and I think a lot of that had to do with the timing of their relationship still during the caretaking phase of the plot. So this may work for other readers.

This book seemed to coincide with the other book in the series, Charlotte’s Control. I have that one on my TBR and this one didn’t spoil any part of that book.

The Lyon’s Lover is part of the multi author Lyon’s Den Connected World and the author’s Control series.

This was a new to me author and I’d read this author again.

There are three encounters and was surprised this book was top heavy with the steam. There was a few alluded moments in the back half but all encounters occurred in the first 60%.

Oh mama, she's a spiiiiicy one!

I found myself giggling and kicking my feet the entire time reading this, whether it was because I found something hilarious (the bed chains, he was a like a puppy!) or downright adorable (he paid attention to her breakfast routine <3). This is my second book within the Lyon's Den world, and even though they are different authors, you get the same central vibe of writing style which is wonderful in interconnected series with multiple authors.

Belle and Luke are wonderful MCs. Each has such a detailed history, and the way their stories intertwine was equal parts fun, deep, and endearing. There's one part that I called from the very beginning and looooved how it played out at the end (not going to spoil it, so you'll just have to read it for yourself to find out what I mean!)

I'd say there's a trigger warning for alchoholism, if that is a topic that affects you.

Appreciation as always to NetGalley for being able to read an early copy of this.

4.5*

Thankfully longer than many books in this series so you get to know the characters properly. After years a a courtesan Bella has retired, she wants to marry and have a family but isn't sure any man will marry her due to her past. So she visit Mrs Dovr-Lyon and asks for help.
I'm return Mrs Dove-Lyon asks that Bella helps a young Lord who is quickly becoming an alcoholic and gambler, so Bella agrees, and Like moved into her house to dry out. Although Like is much younger they become closer, and when Bella returns to Lyons Den, Mrs Dove-Lyon informs her that Like is the man pushed for Bella.

Both are a little taken aback although quickly discover they like the idea. Until Luke works out who Bella is, and she decided there's no future for them.

But do William and Lady Charlotte get their happy ending? I hate lose ends.

5 STARS, WONDERFUL ENCHANTING TALE

5 STARS for Maggie Sims & her excellent romantic storyline to the multi-author Series: The Lyon's Den Connected World. She provides a great BLURB, also. Great characters & keeping the Lyon's Den close to its roots.

Fast paced & action packed with romance, love, & reasons to stop with an addiction to alcohol. I liked how it wasn't preachy on the subject of the evils of alcohol & allowed those not completely addictive to still enjoy their lives with some ale, sherry, or just some dinner wine.

I also love how Belle & Luke's love was considered by their friends & loved ones in almost blanket understanding. Then, hats off to Bell's close friend the Countess & one of Luke's best friends, Will. Maybe Maggie Sims will mention them & their friend the blacksmith of specialties in another read or 2.

A beautiful well-written storyline about an ex- courtesan and an Earl’s son who has become an alcoholic!

Belle had retired and wanted a life filled with a husband, family and if possible love. Luke was running from emotions of the past and was wasting his life gambling and drinking. It was Belle’s task to reform his ways and make him a better person.

This was such a fun, witty emotional read, two different people from two different walks of life who fall in love. Belle has issues and with her past creeping up, can they both overcome these issues to find their HEA?

Another great read from Ms Sims bringing love, tenderness and entertainment together in one perfect read!

Lyon's Lover is not only 2nd book in the Control series, but is also part of the Lyon's Den world. As such, characters from both make appearances, but it can still be read and enjoyed as a standalone. Luke and Belle's story is a reverse age-gap romance which has added depths due to the heavy subject of addiction underlying much of the story. It's at once witty and funny as well as serious and seriously hot. Both of them are wonderful characters and I loved the unexpected twists at the end leading to their HEA. Hopefully, we'll catch up with them again when Luke's last unattached friend finds his match!

This book features two great and unconventional characters, Belle and Luke. She is a dominant, determined, and strong heroine, but she struggles with her past as a courtesan. He is a submissive, young, and immature hero. They seem inappropriate for one another. Belle and Luke must overcome many obstacles, such as their age difference and societal and personal prejudices, especially Belle's. He redeems himself with Belle's assistance. She overcomes her poor self-perception with Luke's assistance. The two are strongly attracted to each other and face obstacles and challenges before finding their HEA. This story is an entertaining read.

Well well well. 😉 Having loved Charlotte’s control, I was quick to pick up Lyon’s Lover. I was delighted to see Charlotte and William feature in this new story where we get introduced to a new great couple. Younger, eager, devoted man and worldly but vulnerable older woman is fast becoming my fave dynamics.
There was so much to love in this that I can only urge you to read and see for yourself. An usual premise (a hero who suffers from alcoholism), scorching love scenes (I’m definitely having a man sleeping in my bedroom at the foot of my bed form now on), banter between males friends (I loved this) shocking twists (no spoilers!) and a satisfying ending.
Maggie Sims only gets better!

Already retired as a courtesan, Belle wants a husband and children. Mrs. Dove-Lyon is always the matchmaker, for a price. Instead of a husband, Belle ends up with a drunken Luke, an earl's heir. Her job is to dry him out and set him on the path of finding a purpose. Unexpected is the sexual attraction and deeper feelings. It's a dilemma for her to accept Mrs. Dove-Lyon's choice for a husband. The difference in age and class make a difference to her, but not for Luke.
Love this series and this book is one of the reasons why.

An enemies to friends to more! I loved that Belle, the former courtesan, was tasked with helping turn Lord Luke’s life around. But even with someone who once mocked her, she has the patience of a saint as she holds him accountable for his drinking.

It was terrific how these two both helped each other realize their worth. Luke totally looked up to Belle as a savvy business woman and investor while lamenting his own lack of prospects, and Belle worries her reputation will tarnish his.

Once they do get intimate, I love that Luke made sure he always had her consent and that she was never “performing” for him. Sims writes terrific steamy scenes with all of the emotion to back it up.

I loved the interesting twist to things and how that made them dig deeper to decide what makes them happy. Great story!

Maggie Sims is one of my favorite authors: her stories and characters have all the elements of a beautiful romance! Isabelle and Luke seem unlikely as a couple, but their personalities and chemistry match perfectly. She worries and protects him, while he wakes up and sees how his lifestyle adversely affects his relationship with his family. Their attraction leads them towards happiness with a few doubts and possible obstacles. I loved seeing some of the characters from prior books and can’t wait for more!!
