Well this was certainly the sexiest Paige Toon novel yet, these characters are all charged and there are lingering looks left right and centre. This book is also chock full of secrets which also makes it incredibly hard to review without giving spoilers but don't worry I'm not giving anything away and neither is this author. Every turn is unexpected and I really didn't see some of the reveals along the way coming at all.

I bonded with Hannah right away, she seems like such an easy going type of person and someone that it would be easy to chat to and get along with and so I was invested in her right from the start. She has had a tough start in life and her secret heartbreak is always there with her affecting her everyday thoughts and actions. Sonny also wears his heartbreak right out there. He is a complex fellow and I have to admit I was somewhat wary of him to begin with but he is a total cinnamon roll of a man, he has a bit of a tough exterior but is soft and lovely in the muddle. He has a whole host of skeletons in his closet and all of those contribute to his complex past and his own secret heartbreak.

This book deals with many many issues that aren't often covered in this genre. A lot of those issues are plot points, reveals or spoilers and so I can't really go into greater detail but I really loved seeing this author tackle some of these topics that might normally seem taboo. One of the messages that comes across in this book is that sex isn't the be all and end all in a relationship, that sex can sometimes be traumatic and there can be love without sex and that is something which I don't think comes up often enough.

We also delve into the area of mental health in this novel, something which thankfully is becoming less and less taboo. Reading about it in this matter of fact way is definitely something that contributes to breaking those barriers and I love the way it is explored and written about in the context of Hannah and Sonny's stories. Of course we have some wonderful settings because it wouldn't be a Paige Toon novel without some wonderful travel adventures whether that's a trip in a canoe along the cam or flying further afield to friends and family in exotic locations. I was there alongside these characters; travelling vicariously through them and having the odd glass of prosecco with them as I did.

This is a beautiful slow burn of a book that explores love in all its forms. I love the topics that Paige Toon has had her characters meet head on and I loved being back in Cambridge again and the One Perfect Summer vibes that it bought. This is the kind of book we all need in our lives right now and it was a pleasure to read, I hope to see these characters again very soon!

When Hannah meets Sonny, sparks fly!

Hannah works in an optometrist’s office when Sonny comes in for an eye exam and to order new glasses. Their interaction hints at a connection. But when Sonny returns to pick up his glasses, he’s a different man. Gone is the happy, flirtatious guy; instead, he seems sad and lost.

In the weeks that follow, Hannah bumps into him multiple times. Eventually, they strike up a friendship. Neither Hannah nor Sonny is looking for a relationship. Hannah, moreover, isn’t staying in England permanently. She plans to leave as soon as her uncle returns from his cruise, as she’s house- and dog-sitting in his absence.

Little by little, Hannah and Sonny open up about their traumas and pain, but can they open their hearts to love?

Fabulous writing, deeply moving themes, likable characters, and a summer setting make this reader a fan of Paige Toon.

The Minute I Saw You by Paige Toon. (2020).

When Hannah meets Sonny, she's irresistibly drawn to him. The best thing is he's only in town on holiday which works for Hannah as neither of them do long-term relationships. But as time goes on and their chemistry shows no sign of cooling, they start to question their reasons for shutting each other out. Are they both too broken to find love? And if they tear down the walls between them, will they still like what's on the other side?

This one went a whole lot deeper than I was expecting to be honest. I thought it would be along the lines of a romance with a bit of drama. But Sonny and Hannah's respective backgrounds are actually quite dark and traumatic when they are revealed, Sonny's in particular could be triggering to some readers. I know the synopsis refers to them being "broken" which is a very accurate description; sometimes it felt too unbelievable that these traumatised people managed to find each other AND somehow be exactly what the other person needed to move forward from their trauma. I definitely enjoyed this one, it just really wasn't what I was expecting. It also moved fairly slow in my opinion. I did really like both Sonny and Hannah and was hoping it would work out for them, and I loved their friends Matilda and Archie.
Overall: a thought-provoking and interesting contemporary love story exploring some serious issues.

I dunno. I liked it and finished it within a day, at the same time it was a bit too much tragedy for me. One step further and this could have been written by Colleen Hoover. Not sure whether I'll stick to that 4 star rating.

"The Minute I Saw You" by Paige Toon is a story about lives that grow and flourish with challenges when enriched with love and friendship.

Beware that there are triggers such abuse, sexual offending, death and grief.

Find me on instagram

As I started this book with blank expectations, I was a bit confused about the first half of the book that would depict the protagonists Sonny and Anna in a very superficial way:
Sonny the promiscuous bad boy, Anna the good-girl next door. But, I do understand that this is the facade that people allow you to see. Just the tip of the iceberg.

The next 25% of the book deals with the actual inner worlds of Sonny and Anna. This part felt a tad overwhelming as a reader. Both of these protagonists have gone through great misfortune and the story instigates high hope for healing these misfortunes.

The last 25% of the book are all about quick fixation of pains and drama and re-focus on the happy ending. So, love, peace and harmony are all here. For everyone - without any exceptions. That sounds great, right? I mean who doesn't love a happy ending? But, considering all the misfortunes, I was taken by surprise that the healing process was accelerated to match the high hopes for love, peace and harmony.

Overall a 3,5 star reading experience. I wasn't really convinced by the writing style, hence downgrading to 3 stars.

THIS.BOOK.WAS.AMAZING!!! It has been a while since I read a romance book that I felt was impossible to put down and totally transport me, but The Minute I Saw You was everything I look for in a five star read!

Two things that made this book perfect were the pacing and chemistry. I do not want to spoil the plot, but Hannah and Sonny both had past traumas that they were dealing with, and the way the two slowly opened up to each other felt realistic and raw. Also, as a reader, we really got to know each of the characters in the present before Toon opened up to us about their pasts. Of course, there were glimpses into their histories that built suspense, which only ended up increasing my connection to these characters. In terms of the romance, Hannah and Sonny's chemistry, support for each other and progression of their relationship was a joy to read. I loved how close they were despite having zero physical intimacy and the idea that they were dating long before they were dating.

Also, the secondary characters added a ton of depth to the story, the writing transported me right to the Cambridge suburbs, and I loved Hannah's profession as an optician/ all that I learned within this field.

Don't skip out on this emotional romance!!

'However unstable you may feel at times, you never unsteady me.'
Another beautiful, heartbreaking but at the same time heartwarming story by Paige Toon. As always, I connected with the characters right away and I just loved Hannah and Sonny together and how their relationship developed.

This was a perfect slow burn romance with just the right amount of tension and the perfect summer setting. I will make sure to visit Cambridge someday when all this craziness is over! Sounds so lovely!

I really wanted to like this and it started out so well, but in the end it was just okay - mostly because nothing really happens in it. It would have been better if the focus had stayed on the heroes issues, which I felt were more important. But then the h had to have her own malfunction and she was so annoying and selfish about it. It became more like a competition for 'who is the most f*cked up' and I really felt like the story just spun its wheels.

The premise was great. The characters were AMAZING, very well drawn and real, and the book overall was well written. I didn't mind the slow-burn, or the secondary characters that got almost as much time as the mains, or even that there were kids in it. I just kept waiting for something to happen to make me feel, and nothing really resonated.

I will still check out more by this writer, however. Fundamentally, she works for me.

I’ve long maintained that there is a big difference between a romance and a love story. This is a love story. The blurb may read like a romance, but in my opinion, it ticks all the boxes for angst ridden, heart-breaking, all consuming love story.

‘You know I don’t do relationships,’ I say awkwardly, turning away and pulling up a handful of grass.
‘We are in a relationship,’ he snaps, making me jump. He sits up with frustration and plants his palms on the ground behind him. ‘You know that, don’t you? This is the closest thing to a relationship I’ve ever had. The only thing that’s missing is the sex,’ he adds with exasperation.

The Minute I Saw You is about two people who, despite their attraction to each other, are determined to not fall in love. This novel is a study in trauma and the way in which unresolved trauma can dig down deep into a person’s soul, affecting everything and steering their choices long after it’s been lived. This was, at times, a truly heartbreaking story and entirely unexpected in terms of where it went for both of the characters.

‘Sometimes, Hannah,’ he says in a deep, dark voice that sends a chill down my spine, ‘I think you and I are so damaged that being together might be the worst thing we could possibly do to each other.’

The supporting cast within this novel are terrific. From friends through to family, this story shows the entire notion of ‘find your tribe’ in action. It also demonstrates just how important trust is when it comes to working through trauma, having people there for you who are able to empathise and support when necessary. Hannah’s aunt June and uncle Charles were such a force within Hannah’s life and yet they were both off-screen characters; June was dead and Charles was away on a cruise for the majority of the novel. This is where Paige Toon really shines in her skill as an author; her characters are so wholly three dimensional that even when they aren’t ‘there’ they are very much present.

‘When I first went to live with my aunt and uncle, it took a lot of coaxing to get me to open up, while Charles could’ve talked the hind legs off a donkey. June was quieter, more willing to embrace the silence. I feel a pain, missing her – she was very comfortable to be around, a soothing, calming soul who always made me feel safe. But it was Charles who challenged me, who encouraged me out of my shell and who helped me to rediscover my voice and the confidence I’d had…’

I really enjoyed the project that Hannah and Sonny bond over, whereby Sonny photographs the eyes of homeless people in macro in order to raise awareness about the need for charitable vision care. This whole issue was presented so well within the novel and really opened up my mind to what it might be like to be living on the streets while not even being able to see properly. I need my glasses for every waking moment and even when I take them off to shower I am frustrated by my poor vision. I hate not being able to see. The privilege of having such an ease of access to good vision care that I take for granted was evident when contrasted, via some impactful examples, to the experiences of the homeless people Sonny met throughout the project. I loved the exhibition that Sonny put together for his awareness campaign, both its intent and what it must have looked like.

‘The photographs have been blown up to giant-size. A central coloured iris is set on a square white background, and tiny words run around the rim of the iris in a circle, telling us about the subject: who they are and what they like people to know about them. Sometimes the subjects recount how they became homeless…’

While there is undoubtedly some very sad moments within this story, a particular gravity to some scenes that leave quite the imprint on you, I found this overall to be an incredibly hopeful story. And as you all know, I am all there for anything with even just a hint of ‘uplit’ about it. I became quite invested in Hannah and Sonny, both as individuals and as a couple. They might have been a risk to each other, in terms of the trauma they each brought to the table, but their love story was beautiful and deeply meaningful.

Thanks is extended to Penguin Random House Australia for providing me with a review copy of The Minute I Saw You.

‘If I thought I was going to stop thinking about him, I was wrong.’

The Minute I Saw You is the latest release from bestselling author Paige Toon. Love, trauma, emotional wellbeing, personal baggage, friendships, chance and courage defines this moving contemporary romance novel. A perfect winter warmer, Paige Toon’s latest uplit title will embrace all readers, far and wide.

The Minute I Saw You takes the reader directly into the lives of Hannah and Sonny. When these two lost souls meet, the connection is immediate and strong. What was meant to be a no strings attached style romance, turns into something much more poignant. Despite both parties resisting any form of a relationship due to a whole host of personal baggage, life works in mysterious ways and it transforms this potential couple’s outlook on love. When Sonny is faced with some devastating news, he makes some adjustments to his life. This change results in a different kind of connection between Sonny and Hannah. They discover the true value of friendship and support. Despite the obvious level of attraction that simmers between them, they learn to connect on a different level. Along the way, this couple confront their personal demons, difficult pasts and they learn to trust again. But are they ready to let love into their lives?

I think The Minute I Saw You is a really great title for a contemporary fiction and romance novel. Paige Toon’s new release alludes to an instant, fall in love at first sight style romance. The novel and synopsis does head this way in some respects, but it encompasses much more. The Minute I Saw You was consuming and heartfelt. With emotional highs and lows, this one will be sure to strike a strong chord with a wide audience range.

Toon’s leads are interesting, well presented and haunted by their pasts, as well as present day hang ups. Toon paired this couple up very well, they complimented each other but there was also a sufficient amount of tension between Sonny and Hannah which helped to move the novel along. I liked the initial attraction between these two, the complications, personal baggage, trust issues, the obvious chemistry, tension levels and eventual pathway to happiness. Supporting Hannah and Sonny are great cast of secondary characters who lift this novel to greater heights. I really loved the canine companion included in the story, it was a heartwarming touch. Personal relationships, friendships, extended family and support networks remain of the utmost importance in The Minute I Saw You. I appreciated Toon’s focus on these aspects within her novel.

From the outset, it is easy to assume that The Minute I Saw You is a standard contemporary romance. However, Toon proves her worth as an author by including some weighty themes within her new book. From mental health, insecurity, depression, anxiety, loss, grief, trauma, risk, sex and addiction, The Minute I Saw You treads delicate emotional ground. Each of these issues is touched on with insight, personal connection and sensitivity. The experiences of the characters were heartfelt and genuine. The underlying message that love and the strength of personal relationships in overcoming trying times remains clear in Toon’s approach.

With majority of the action set in a truly delightful British locale, reminding me of a place I often miss living in Australia, The Minute I Saw You proved to be an engaging read, complete with a satisfying end. I cheered these characters on in their emotionally tough search for personal acceptance, true love, happiness, fulfillment and recovery. The Minute I Saw You is a must read for contemporary fiction and romance readers.

I love Paige Toon's work. I have never been let down by her writing in the past. I have always received a high quality story and not just about romance where boy-meets-girl, no, her books go far deeper and we're provided with a wonderful storyline that just envelopes you in a warm, comforting hug. 'The Minute I Saw You' is going to be another first class read and I will need to stock up on some tissues, I think. I love Hannah and Sonny and I can't wait to meet them again and follow them through the ups and downs of their journey, wherever they may end up. I really enjoyed the first three chapters and already my emotions were beginning to stir!
I cannot wait for the full story!!!
Thank you very much Simon & Schuster UK, for this wonderful, three-chapter 'teaser!'

The Minute I Saw You was such an amazing book and along with The Last Piece of My Heart it is now definitely my favorite Paige Toon novel. Hannah and Sonny are some of the best characters she’s created so far and I grew fond of both of them right away. I loved the story and it’s been a very long time since a book has made me as emotional as this one. I definitely had to fight back tears several times and I can’t wait to see what Paige Toon will come up with next.

Addictive from start to finish. Hannah is a likeable character from the start and Sonny grows on you so much. The topics brought up in this book are quite serious but so delicately written. I love the setting of Cambridge so much loving even more the mention of Joe and Alice (Two personal favourites of mine).

Awful. Faux drama with unconvincing characters and their unconvincing back story. A triumph of research without believability. I finished because of my completionist tendency, not because I cared one iota of the characters and their story. Glad that's over.

Paige Toon was written another simply stunning story.

I was hooked almost immediately and loved the blatant initial chemistry between Hannah and Sonny in their first meeting and was as confused as Hannah when a couple of weeks later he was like a different person.

From then they start to see each other about and accept that they can only be friends - especially since Sonny is pledging abstinence for reasons not entirely divulged initially. Equally Hannah is obviously holding something back about her life, which is why she has never really wanted to settle anywhere.

In fact what Hannah was hiding, was so unexpected, I literally guessed it about 5 pages before the reveal, and even then I didn't fully guess. And Sonny, I'd not have pegged what is in his past either. But it was the finding out about both them that is where the book seems to go up another notch.

I loved Hannah's new friendships and her dog Bertie is adorable too. The first canoeing scene is fabulous in that respect, so amusing.

I really enjoyed seeing just how close Hannah and Sonny could become while still maintaining there was nothing between them! It is just a heart warming story that I found a joy to read.

I found this this, like all of this authors books, to be a quick, easy to engage with book, that I didn't want to put down.

Thank you Simon & Schuster and Netgalley for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

Paige Toon has done it again with another cracking book. This may be classed as chick lit, but her books are never sweet and fluffy and usually cover some hard topics as this book did. Her books always draw me in straight away and I never want them to end!

The Minute I Saw You is easily my new favourite book of Paige’s, tied with Five Years From Now because I just love that one too! I loved Hannah and Sonny. They’re such amazing characters, each with a tragic secret backstory. I love their connection with each other and their friendships with other characters in this one like Matilda and Archie. They make the best friendship group! I was thrown surprises I didn’t see coming that made me not want to put the book down. And I didn’t, making me a rubbish booksta friend as I buddy read it with the lovely @bookish_rach but I just kept reading on because I just couldn’t stop! Sorry! 😂

What I love about Paige’s books is that she manages to cover important issues in her stories too. This one for example address mental health, for both women and men, which we don’t always see a lot of when it comes to male characters. I definitely want to see more of Hannah and Sonny and although I read a lovely little short story about Matilda and Archie, they definitely need their own novel, I need more!

I absolutely love Paige Toon’s books and her ‘voice’ - The Minute I Saw You is no exception. It’s difficult to review on the basis of three fairly short chapters, but the beginning of this story already has warmth, depth and intrigue and I know the whole book will be extraordinary, which is why I’ve just pre-ordered it on Kindle and can’t wait until it’s released on Thursday (14th May).

I can’t wait to fall properly in love with Hannah and Sonny (and like all of Paige’s heroes, Sonny is HOT!)

*UPDATE*
I’ve now read the whole of The Minute I Saw You, and wow - what an amazing book! I felt very emotional when I finished it, and found it difficult to talk.

It was such a warm, beautiful, moving and poignant love story. Some very difficult subjects (no spoilers here) were tackled sensitively and deftly, giving us very damaged but likeable characters in Hannah & Sonny, which made me root for them all the more. I loved the way the romance gradually blossomed between them, even without them realising it sometimes, and thought the ending was perfect. I also really enjoyed the Cambridgeshire setting, the secondary characters - particularly Archie and Matilda, plus Natalie and Imogen - and the star guest appearances (again no spoilers here!)

I can’t wait to read this again, and am really looking forward to Paige’s next book.

Nope, this was not for me!

I found the story slow and boring, main character Hannah was very immature and whiny, and grated on my nerves. I don't mind some drama, but this was too much.

I had never read a Paige Toon book before and I don't think I'll read another one.

It's a wonder I managed to finish it.

Normally I ADORE paige toon but I kinda didn't like the latest books of her that much. I'll still read the next book she's going to bring out since I always was a huge fan of her and her stories.

Główni bohaterowie, czyli Hannah i Sonny, mieli traumy z przeszłości, z którymi musieli sobie radzić.

Absolutnie uwielbiam sposób, w jaki autorka pokazała nam to, w kontekście historii Hannah I Sonny’ego.

•Gdy tylko cię ujrzałam• to przepiękna, rozdzierająca, ale jednocześnie rozgrzewająca serce, historia❤️‍🩹 To idealny romans z powolnym rozpalaniem, odpowiednia ilością napięcia i wspaniałym letnim otoczeniem. Eksploruje miłość we wszyskich jej formach. Uwielbiam dosłownie wszystko w tej książce!

Takich książek, potrzebujemy w swoim życiu!

Took ages to get going and the characters' idea of a good time seems to be to get drunk every time. Other than that, it was okay. Not my favourite by this author.

Finally another Toon book, my first on kindle, but I will definitely get the paperback when it comes out in August.

We follow Hannah in this story. She works as an optician and is housesitting for her uncle. She went through a lot in her life and doesn’t do relationships. Then Sonny walk into the shop, she works at and they have instant chemistry. Paige Toon captured that beautifully. When he comes back to pick up his glasses two weeks later he is very different though.

Sonny is a photographer, but he is not enjoying fashion photography. His past has been full of difficult situations and now he has sworn of sex for a while.

They meet again through Hannah’s new friend Matilda. A friendship starts to build up between them, but their connection is still obvious. I really enjoyed how their relationship developed, because it was different. They start spending more and more time together, sometimes with their friends or canoeing on the river or just hanging out at the pub.

This book covers a lot of very important topics like mental health, the homeless and many more. I don’t want to give too much away here.
It’s full of emotions and that makes the book really intense in a good way. There are a lot of unexpected moments and ups and downs.

Hannah and Sonny are great main characters with a lot of depth and warmth. I also really liked the other characters in this book and it was fab to read about some familiar faces again.

Paige Toon’s voice is electric, passionate and fresh. I was hooked immediately and really liked how the storyline developed. The book is also very sexy and exciting.

It’s another stunning and amazing book by Paige Toon. It’s a roller coaster of emotions and I also enjoyed being back in Cambridge. I absolutely adored the setting.

ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!!! Perfect for summer!

Paige Toon is a relatively new author to me, and my best friend and I took it upon ourselves to read ‘The Minute I Saw You’ as a read along.

This story is beautiful in so many ways, it’s a heartfelt romance with lots of sweet compelling moments which really tugged upon my heartstrings. It also is about two people struggling to come to terms with very significant moments in their lives, one loss and another overcoming from abuse. It made for a very powerful read, and I loved Sonny and Hannah together. To me two broken halves definitely healed each other to make them whole again.

Hannah and Sonny both don’t do relationships, they prefer no strings attached, as gifting people more than a night forces them to be vulnerable and share a part of themselves they aren’t ready and don’t want to give. But when they both encounter each other, it is instant attraction, flirtation and flaming chemistry, but their lust develops into a slow burning love.

This book struck a personal nerve, and made Hannah’s character completely relatable. It hurt my heart but also allowed me to close the book feeling 100 percent satisfied with the ending and the conclusion of all the characters stories.

I absolutely adored Matilda and Archie, their romance was as equally as adorable as Hannah and Sonny’s, and I found myself wanting to be a part of their friendship group.

A modern, heartwarming romance which is perfect for those who enjoy sweet slow burn romances. The ending was so worth it!

I was dubious going into this book as I had deemed romance books not my genre earlier in the year. However, this pleasantly surprised me. I always feel let down in romance books by the way characters fall into love so easily but this one felt so real and raw. I liked that it had other interesting topics within as well, so the focus wasn’t just the love story. Thanks Nicole for the recommendation ! :)
