This is a collection in which various teams tell a short history of Superman set in their respective countries. Like any compilation, it has a great difference between one and the other of quality and argument level. And since I can't find a perfect story, I will simply put my favorites and talk about them a bit.
Top stories for the narrative:
Superman United States: the importance of speaking instead of attacking. A clear example of asking before shooting, and not vice versa.
Superman Spain: it is a little Naive, but it is endearing to see the big guy just enjoying himself.
Superman Serbia: Superman as being of light, something that is getting lost more and more.
Superman Brazil: of all the stories, this one is the most philosophical. Why is Superman as he is and why he acts as he acts.
Top stories for their art:
Superman Spain: Jorge Jiménez. Nothing more to say. He is a top artist and does not have a single flaw in his drawings. Here is a sample of his art, and what the author used for inspiration for drawing:
Superman Serbia: Only for the initial image is more than worth it.
Superman India: It is made in black and white, with touches of blue. I find it very interesting, in addition as a wink, Superman carries the classic s.
Superman Argentina: I don't know if I like it or not, the result is fine, but the digital catches my eye a lot.
Superman Poland: a simple story but with the spirit of the character, and a very cool drawing to match it.
Superman Czech Republic: The story is quite crazy, I can't deny it, but it is Superman's design in this volume that I liked the most, I think the suit is very good, the cape better, and the beard suits him. Najrelevantniji Supermen: SAD (teme bliske današnjem stanju u svetu)
Najlepše nacrtan Supermen: FRANCUSKA (he’s an icon, he’s a legend and he is the moment)
“Daddy Chill!” Supermen: ČEŠKA (enough said)
Some of these are great and some of them are so forgettable, I would say my favorite wassssssss Argentina
United States: pretty good, Dan Jurgens being the obvious and I think appropriate choice
Super thought: its sometimes better to ask questions first and hold off on shooting
Spain: good!! I liked it, really great beautiful artwork
Italy: Superman traverses Dante’s Inferno, I was ready for this one to be over
Serbia: good, shoutsout the main man
Cameroon: good! Shows great examples of respect and being able to say “sorry I messed up”
India: good story, lovely black and white art with just Blue for pop
Argentina: I found this one to be really entertaining and the art is gorgeous
Turkey: the first one that struck me as very mid
France: it’s alright, it’s a king shark romp
Brazil: FIRE, gorgeous artwork, great message
Poland: gorgeous art, pretty good! The action sequence in this one was notably thrilling, very effective
Mexico: this one’s iiiiight the story is cute, the artwork is not my fave
Germany: this one’s insane lmfao there’s a lightly tacked on message of “Germany’s done some bad things but everybody can do better” and then they scooby doo reveal the villain
Czech Republic: not bad
Japan: Superman’s going crazy in the Japanese 7/11
I jakości, jaką można oczekiwać.
I think I’m done with the “The World” series for DC characters.
It started with Batman: The World, which I actually liked. The concept sounded brilliant — having local creators from different countries reimagine iconic characters in their cultural context. But the execution? Not so much.
Joker: The World was a mess, and now Superman: The World feels like the final nail in the coffin.
And here’s the thing — if you answer “who is Superman?” by listing his powers, then sorry, you’ve never actually read Superman.
Sadly, most of the writers in this anthology clearly haven’t either.
Only three stories stood out to me: Serbia, Poland, and Czechia.
As a Turkish reader, I’ve been especially disappointed with how Türkiye was portrayed in all three “The World” editions. That stings a little extra.
This project is very special to me. People who like to more critically analyze culture are very quick to not only flag Superman as the kind of character only the US could create, but as the kind of character that is incompatible with the rest of the world. A project like this is a resounding proof that that se obd point is nonsensical, allowing writer artist teams from all over the world to all take a stab at writing for Big Blue. The stories and art styles vary widely but that's the joy, I live how the German story is so different from the Indian story which is so different from the Spanish story etc etc. All Superman, but Superman seen and filtered through a variety of cultural contexts. Its also a fun snapshot of the various comic traditions from around the world.
Tiny bite sized vignettes of my favorite guy from all over the world. Not every one is exceptional, but enough of them are, and they all form into such a strong celebration for the character that this becomes almost a necessity to read for fans. Absolutely wonderful.
Nearly every story is a gem - great artwork and beautifully written - proving that there's a LOT more to Superman than "the American way." The character represents hope and finding love and beauty in all its forms, and he's truly universal.
I love the idea of this anthology: creators from around the world make short comics starring Superma in their home country. The execution varies wildly. There are a few solid little stories in here, either because the character of Superman or the country were solidly represented. However, most of the stories are merely passable. And I found the narration boxes in the Italian comic to be too difficult to read, both because the text was small and because the fonts used weren't very clear at that size.
