"She was the axis my world turned on; the only one who’d taken over my thoughts, dreams, and fears. I was drawn to her, compelled by a feeling I couldn’t fully understand."
After Clubs, I've been waiting to finally get my hands on my this book because I've intrigued by Max's character from Spades. The chemistry and tension between this book had me on the edge of my sit. And can you believe that i finished this in 2hours in one setting that's how much i enjoyed it. However the only flaw is that unlike the other books, i could predict what was going to happen next and it felt a bit off putting considering i loved Clubs so much with Spades being a close second, but all in all i loved it so much. Plus i felt like it just jumped into action, we never got to see when they fell in love. It kind of started with Max just being head over heels and we never got to understand how, when and why he was infatuated with her.
Rosalie, i liked her character so much. I adored how her and Max had that push and pull relationship. The yearning, angst and heart wrenching moments between them literally felt like a rollercoaster of emotions. I can't explain how much it had me stressed but at the same time all their stolen glances and him dropping her home, or just being a bodyguard in general, i was living for those moments. And him being jealous, yes please, it was so hot, i was literally giggling the entire time. I also enjoyed how she put him in his place, she had this mafia boss being late to work whenever she was late for breakfast and i couldn't stop laughing.
Max, his character always intrigued me. It was sad seeing him struggle after their breakup, him resulting to harmful things, it was really devastating. But the marriage of convenience, yes please. I loved seeing how the boundaries between them broke and next thing you know they are in love. He was patient with her and never forced her to do anything. I loved how they stood up for each other, mostly at the end, it felt so fulfilling. And him killing for her, i was literally swooning because what the hell.
The only other thing that left me confused is that they didn't confess their love for each other. Is it just me who feels like for a romance book, that is just necessary?
All in all i enjoyed it and can we talk about how Kyra's writing has improved! From her debut book Spades to this, you can tell how much she's improved and can't wait to read her future books.
