'Alfred of Wessex, Book Resistance' is the third book in the Alfred of Wessex trilogy of historical novels.
"Enjoying every minute, thank you." "Just finished book 3, fantastic throughout!" "On book 3. Enjoying all!! Thank you Mr. Carden."
With every other Anglo-Saxon Kingdom defeated by the Danes, once again Wessex is invaded and this time it could be final. Are there Saxons prepared to accept the conquering army? Will more vikings pounce on a seemingly defeated Wessex? Can Alfred's resistance to the Danes succeed?
The action moves across Wessex, with Alfred on the run until the last battle that will decided the fate of the Kingdom.
Alfred of Wessex is historical fiction but is firmly based around real events in Anglo-Saxon Wessex during the 9th century viking wars of Alfred the Great.
Reader "I finished reading 'Resistance' yesterday and have to say I thoroughly enjoyed it." Reader "Loving this series!" Reader "Fantastic trilogy. I'm just on book 3 now...great books." Reader "Very good books! To be compared to the master of the genre, Bernard Cornwell, is high praise indeed!" Reader "Excellent fictional account of Alfred the Great" Reader "Fantastic trilogy." Reader "Finished the third one; VERY good series" Reader "Many historical novels of the Anglo-Saxon period have a tendency to be gritty stories of battle after battle. But not this one. Carden's trilogy is filled with human interest, the warp and woof of human relationships, deep questioning on the part of the hero, Alfred. Yes, of course there are battles and sieges, but these are well drawn in the mind, and whilst they are tent poles for the story, the underlying narrative drives that story onwards. I have read all three books in something under a week, and am grateful to Carden for painting a vivid and engaging portrayal of what might well have been the kingly rule of Alfred."
'Resistance' follows on from 'Alfred of Wessex, Book Inheritance' and 'Book Vengeance'.
The Michael Carden Michael Carden has six published books to date, including humorous tales of cycling adventures through historic sites of England and Scotland, the Bike Ride Books series. This is the third book of the Alfred of Wessex trilogy.
Last book of the trilogy, ending with the aftermath of the battle of Edington, where Edward decisively defeated Guthrum and The Great Heathen Army..
It would be nice if the author wrote a few more books, covering the defeat of the Danes at Benfleet, and then systematically driving the Danes out of Mercia, East Anglia, and Northumbria.
Recommended for those who like historical fiction and are done with vikings being portrayed as heroes.
Great book on the story of Alfred. Easy to follow due to the author simplifying names and places. A novel for sure but based on known historical facts. Read the 3 book series and now in search of others relating to the rest of his life and of how his children carried on his legacy.
Having read The Saxon Chronicles with all its excitement and intrigue, I was worried this version would be dry and factual. Boy was I wrong!! Michael Cardenas breathed life into Alfred of Wessex and recreated a world of bravery and horror, fear and love, and friendship and trust. Long live Alfred the Great.
I love history but it sometimes gets very stuffy This book I felt had lots of proven historical facts but with likeable rounded characters that you can invest in and follow their journeys
