Fresh off her Georgetown graduation, Jasmine Lewis landed what felt like a dream Washington gig: Working in the communications office for Senator Jack Ashworth, scion of an old money political dynasty, who just also happens to be the frontrunner in the presidential primary. If she plays her cards right, she could be on the fast track to the inner circle of political power in DC.

What she didn't account for was the walking liability that is Trip Ashworth, the Senator's famously handsome and infamously rakish son. When he has a summer romance gone wrong with a pop superstar, she turns their fling into a banger of a breakup song. After a snippet of the song goes viral, Jasmine is tasked with rehabbing Trip's ‘playboy prince’ image, preferably before Jack formally announces his candidacy.

Despite their initial uneasy alliance, Jasmine discovers there’s a lot more to Trip than what the clickbait says. When their relationship evolves into a genuine connection, Jasmine must decide if being with Trip is worth going from spinning the headlines behind the scenes to becoming one herself.

Fans of “Red, White & Royal Blue” by Casey McQuiston and “Good Girl Complex” by Elle Kennedy will enjoy “American Royalty” by Suzy Langevin.

It’s Washington DC. It’s workplace relationship. It’s politics as we wish it could be…it’s American Royalty.

Jasmine’s plan was always to work as a staffer for a year before leaving DC with her boyfriend and going to law school. Now she’s been assigned to rehabilitate the image of the senator’s son after his breakup went viral.

But Trip is not what she expected. Far from being the spoiled prince the media has portrayed him to be, she discovers an intelligent, thoughtful person who is fiercely loyal to his friends.

As Jasmine’s work takes her further from where she thought she was supposed to be, she is faced with a choice - the life she thinks she should choose, or the life she actually wants?

This political romance was refreshing, to say the least. It tackles judgement, the experience of biracial individuals in politics, and the difficulties involved in realising you are not heading the same way as someone you love.

More importantly, there’s hope in this story for those who binge watch West Wing as their comfort show. While it may seem like a fantasy right now, this book is a reminder there are people who get into politics because they genuinely want to make the world a better place.

This is a slow burn, open door romance. Jasmine does start the book in an established relationship, but there nothing even remotely romantic happens before she becomes single. The story deals with parental death, racism, alcoholism, and homophobia.

If you still queue up West Wing when you’re feeling down and want some romance mixed with politics that mean something, add American Royalty to your TBR.

American Royalty by Suzy Langevin is a contemporary romance that has the fast pace of a political drama. The characters are so fun, the dialogue is quick, and the chemistry between Trip and Jasmine is on point.

Jasmine is on the staff of a high profile, political dynasty Senator. When his son, Trip, breaks up with a Taylor Swift coded singer who writes a very public break up song about it, it's Jasmine who is in charge of fixing his image in the media.

What comes next is a slow-burn, but not too slow, romance between Trip and Jasmine that feels very authentic. Langevin does an amazing job at building their relationship in a way that makes it feel real. She doesn't rush into anything, and the third act conflict didn't make me want to throw the book in frustration.

I think what I liked most about the book was the supporting cast of characters. Sometimes the friends can feel a little superfluous in a romance, but all of the characters were three dimensional, and I found myself caring for each and every single one.

If you like the shows The West Wing and Veep, you're going to want to pick up a copy of this book. You're not going to regret it.

Jasmine is taking a year before beginning law school. She has secured a communications job with a Senator in D.C. Her first assignment, damage control for the Senators son. Will their relationship turn into something more? Will scandal tear them apart? I adored this romance. There were several emotional, heavy hitting moments, but also a good amount of humor in the mix as well as some spice. I can’t wait to read more books from Suzy. I find them captivating. I always love the romances from Langevin, and this one delivered, too. The characters were brilliant and were developed so well throughout the book. I adored how Jasmine handled herself throughout the book. She always stood on business and projected herself well in social and work situations. Trip was the perfect MMC, and I felt myself falling for him as I read.

This is such a feel-good, warm hug of a book. I highly recommend it.
