Below the Hunter Moon is a cozy, slow-burn MM paranormal shifter romance with a dash of suspense. It is book two in the Silver Rapids series where each story focuses on one couple’s HEA, and is best enjoyed after reading book one, Under the Lupine Moon.
Silas Granger never wanted to be an alpha. His lifelong avoidance is challenged, though, when a prickly redhead storms through his front door, igniting a blaze in Silas’ heart and awakening instincts that were long since buried. Suddenly, the reluctant alpha is forced to grapple with new discoveries and old foes. Through it all, there’s only one thing he knows for certain—he can’t do it alone. So how is he meant to step into the role he was born for, when the only person he can’t live without doesn’t want him back?
Everyone keeps secrets, but Sam Lamont has more than most—and he’d prefer it to stay that way. Or would he? His resolve is shaken when a giant, oafish wolf-shifter tears down his walls—literally and figuratively—determined to protect him. Even Silas can’t keep him safe from everything, though, especially when Sam’s monsters are of his own making. Will Silas still want him when he realizes just how big the secrets between them are, or will Sam run before he even gets the chance to find out?
Return to Silver Rapids, Alaska with Silas and Sam as they navigate treacherous bargains and burning truths. How far are they willing to go to protect each other from the inevitable?

Back in Silver Rapids with Sam and Silas's story and I absolutely devoured it. I'll try not to spoil too much, I'm just amazed how this story flowed so well especially with some back story with book one as well. I appreciate that even with a bit of crossover it felt like a complete separate book.
This two def hit different for me and I wasn't expecting that. I love how Silas didn't give up when it came to Sam. And Sam was definitely giving Silas a hard time but I was so here for it. Although the spice was more of a slow burn imo, it was HOT.
I like the found family aspect too with this series and love seeing Finn, Jaime, and Shepp again. (I do have a bone to pick with a certain someone but that's nor here or there) Can't wait to read more of this series.
“No. You can push me away all you like. You can run. But I’ll never stop looking for you. I’ll never stop hunting you, choosing you. I’ll never stop waiting for you to choose me, too.”
Book safety, content warnings, and tropes down below.
There were definitely good bits in this book and overall I enjoyed, but there were a couple things that kept it from being great. It was fun seeing the improvements from the author’s debut tho.
Okay, so, the book felt about 100 pages longer than it really needed to be. When the plot was over there was still nearly 50 pages left and most of it was just smut, so I ended up skimming all of it. The plot was also dragged out a lot simply because the MCs refused to communicate, which, plot relevant or not, gets annoying really fast.
I did really enjoy the dynamic between the MCs tho. Their relationship was cute, and their connection felt solid. The spice was good too, just too much of it in a short amount of time at the end for my tastes. I know many will love that tho.
My final grievance, and I don’t know how many times I’ll complain about this before I stop reading shifter books for good, is WHAT IS THE POINT OF WRITING A SHIFTER BOOK IF THE DUDE ISN’T GONNA SHIFT INTO A FUCKING WOLF. Once at the end to fight the bad guy just doesn’t count. Shift and cuddle the human MC ffs. We’re all reading shifter books because we want to read about shifting. Cuddles and animal traits. All that jazz. Having his wolf ears out while being human just doesn’t cut it for me.
3.5 rounded up for making me feel something a couple times with the pining, rejection and fear.
Bonus note: my brain refused to not be confused by the MCs’ names. Silas and Sam. Could not get it right.

Silas whined. He actually whined. How could such a cute noise come out of a man so big and burly?
Would it be worse to not remember the warm tenderness that Silas had shown him, or to have it burned in his memory forever, haunting him with a taste of what could never be his?
He’d told himself one more day. One more good fucking day. The memories of making love with Silas would probably haunt him forever, but at least they’d be good ones.
once again, A. Knightley outdoes herself with this latest installment in the Silver Rapids series. While By the Blood Moon remains my favorite installment of the series, Below the Hunter Moon is a strong successor.
It does a beautiful job of not just picking up where the previous book left off but beautifully weaving the threads of each novel into the new tapestry of this book. Knightley does an excellent job of showing new details of things we've already seen and showing us new things altogether.
Sam and Silas were an absolutely adorable match. Grump x Sunshine will forever be one of my favorite pairings. There's quite a few details that we learn about Sam and I don't want to spoil the surprise but I absolutely ADORED his characterization. He is easily my favorite of the whole series.
I cannot wait to see what happens next for the folks in Silver Rapids.
A trillion thanks to the author for an advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Why yes, I did finish this full novel in a day. And it was absolutely amazing. I need to sit with my thoughts for a bit. Full review to come!

MY ARC HAS ARRIVED. *SCREAMING*

OMG this cover!!! i'm in love
Under the Lupine Moon (#1) - ★★★★☆ By the Blood Moon (#1.5) - ★★★★★
I loved this book so much! Thank you for sending me an arc and congrats on the new release! (I also have the paperback I need to photograph b/c the art is STUNNING!)
If you’re looking for fated mates, grumpy/sunshine, found family, forced proximity and protection, wolf shifters with knotting, and some lovely size difference, then this is the perfect book for you!
While I think you could read this one on its own, I do think you’d much better understand what’s going on if you start with the first book.
I absolutely loved this one - even more than the first! You can really feel the emotion between Sam and Silas - there is some push/pull, as we learn the reasons why Sam thinks he must stay away from Silas despite wanting him so badly. The author did such a wonderful job writing the tension between the two of them and working up to the reveals over what had happened.
And these two! Steammmyyyy! I loved them together so much. I also really love getting to know more about the pack dynamics and Silas really taking control of his pack.
We’re introduced to some new characters and I cannot wait for more stories set in this world! Truly a wonderful romance!
I received an arc in exchange for an honest review.
The Catalog: MM, wolf shifter x human, forced proximity, secrets & lies, reluctant MMC, slow burn, fated mates, grumpy x sunshine, only one bed, size difference, care scenes, found family, brat / spanking, knotting & more!
Spoiler-free Summary: Silas never wanted to be an alpha; there are too many bad memories associated with the title. But when he meets his fated mate, instincts he’d long forced dormant come roaring to life. An alpha needs their mate, but Silas’s doesn’t want him back. Sam is keeping a huge secret, one so big and crushing that he’s decided it’s safer to distance himself from everyone to keep them safe. Sam wants Silas like he’s never wanted anything else, but he fears his mistakes are too insurmountable for them to be together. Luckily, Silas will stop at nothing to make Sam his.
Thoughts: I am so happy to be back in Silver Rapids, my favorite cozy paranormal town in Alaska! I first met Sam and Silas in book one, Under the Lupine Moon, and was so excited for their book! I loved book one, but I think I love this one even more!
One thing I adore about this series is that the wolf shifters spend a lot of time in their partial wolf forms, so there are a lot of adorable (and hawt) moments involving ears, claws, and fangs. In addition, I love how the author writes the characters’ wolfy inner monologue, especially Silas! His wolf was so funny and cute and added so much to the story.
The slow burn development between Silas and Sam was delicious. Sam has his reasons for rejecting Silas, and Silas has his reasons for taking it slow, but the PINING was sooo good! And best of all, I found the balance between intimacy, care, and spice to be perfection.
If you’re looking for cozy gay werewolves, this series is definitely what you want!
okayyyyyy this was insanely better than the first one!! it had a plot and the fuck fest was really pushed to the end. maybe the third one will actually be good?
i was honored to receive an arc in exchange for an honest review.
i have been waiting for this one for so long ! i love silas and sam so dearly and i have been waiting for their story after under the lupine moon for so long i was excited when we were nearing the release date.
i love silas. he is so crazy about sam but still remains respectful and keeps his distance vent though he knows how much the mean to each other. i did want to shake sam a couple of times for how stubborn he was, but it did keep the story going otherwise they'd have been together early and we love a yearning and struggling alpha. sam's work was intersting and i loved how silas was not jugdemental and actually loved it. supportive hubby let's go ! gosh, i need another book about them asap. of even illustrated comics ! i'm sure they are super hot together !
the cover is absolutely stunning and helped me visualize the pair even better.
This book is everything you need if you’re looking for a sweet, fluffy, and heartwarming love story between mates—it’s like a warm blanket for your heart.
I absolutely loved the grumpy/sunshine dynamic between Sam and Silas. It was wonderful to see how Silas never gave up on Sammy, even when Sammy fought his feelings and believed he didn’t deserve Silas.
Their story was breathtakingly beautiful—you can feel the love from the very beginning. The yearning and longing between these two characters will tug at your heartstrings, and the slow burn is absolutely worth the wait.
The plot was captivating and pulled me in completely. I can’t wait to read the rest of the series and return to the magic of Silver Rapids!
AWW this was exactly what i wanted! I’m really loving the characters and the found family. Silas and Sammy were fantastic, i was kicking my feet, smiling during some parts. I’m just such a sucker for the mates trope <3 i do think the smut got a little repetitive in the second half, but i really like the ending. I’m so excited to see where the story is gonna go from there.
I am just gone for Silas. Everything he does has me swooning or blushing. From the way he takes care of the people he cares about, his pack, to his filthy mouth. He’s so incredibly kind and supportive, which we see in book one. And it’s further shown in this one.
Then there’s Sammy. Beautiful, broken, cares-far-too-much, self-sacrificing Sammy. Getting this deep dive into not just who he is as a person, but also the reasoning behind the decisions he made was amazing. He’s a complex man who needed someone willing to take the time to pull back his layers to reveal the beautiful soul he has.
These two fit so well together. Their chemistry, the way they cared, and the heated tension between them. But beyond that, they understood each other on such a deep level that went beyond them being mates. Expect to blush, smile, cry, and rage while reading.
The little possible teasers of couples to come has me so ready and excited.
I received an advanced copy and this is my voluntary review.
Ohh, this was so good, you guys. My heart! I can't even anymore.
I was ecstatic when I received an ARC for this one. I was so impatient to get to it, but like... My brain can be very peculiar about things. So it tends to prefer starting ARC's closer to release so I can post my review in the days leading up to the book coming out! And that was the plan! Except then life was a bit of a mean b*tch and I fell into a reading slump. Which is why this review is coming to you a bit later than I'd hoped.
Honestly, I'm actually a little speechless? This was just so good! First off, the author's writing has improved since the first book was released. Don't get me wrong, it was already great! But in the first book, the dialogue was a little stiff at times, which was really one of my only tiny niggles, and I didn't get that in this one. It flowed so much better! I can't wait to see this author's writing grow even more. Definitely one to watch because I'm certain she's gonna bring us even more amazing and beautiful stories in the future.
As for this book? Excuse my language but DAMN. Sammy and Silas stole my heart, truly. The way this story unfolds, the way everything between them builds and builds, the longing and pining, the deep intense feelings they have for each other... Sammy's pain and desperation and Silas' fierce protectiveness. Sammy has such a sweet soft side he hides from everyone and Silas is so wonderfully unashamedly devoted and steadfast. This book perfectly shows all the things I love about the hurt/comfort trope. My heart is so full after finishing this.
I highly recommend this book, this series, to everyone who's a fan of shifter romances, of fated mates, of hurt/comfort, and of beautiful intense romances. Don't miss out on these books, people, I beg you. Check them out if you haven't already.
I received an ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) in exchange for an honest review.
this plot was 100% driven by miscommunication which never fails to drive me up the wall — so much more could have happened if Sam was just honest sooo much earlier !!
regardless, i did enjoy this one a bit more than the first; for all my qualms about the miscommunication/lying the plot/pacing was slightly improved i think
I loved the glimpses of these two that we got in the previous books, but when I sat down to read theirs I really was not prepared for the level of attachment to their love story I was going to have!
It's not often an author writes a first line of a book that I stop and think 'oh boy I'm in for it' but @author.aknightley did that to me with this one! I believe the note in my Kindle literally reads "I'm sorry what!? You're gonna start us off with that!? Right in the feels? Okay I see how this is gonna go!... 🥹"
And most of my Kindle highlights read mostly the same way after that 🤭
Okay now that my dramatics are out of the way. I really enjoyed this book. Silas' utter devotion to Sam and his needs even if those went against all of his instincts as an Alpha and mate made me love him all that much more. Oftentimes with fated mates they just use the bond as an excuse, but Silas was willing to go at Sam's pace. He listened when Sam asked for space and only proceeded with a relationship when he was comfortable. Did Sam need a firm hand and some Alpha love every now and again? Yes, but that also was at Sam's pace.
Oh Sammy. He needs a hug. He really just needed someone in his corner. He had been fighting so many battles on his own for a long time. Learning to trust and love was such a monumental thing for him. I loved watching his prickly personality soften for Silas, letting his true loving side out and really be comfortable around him. But then turn around and still be the gruff older brother for Jaime.
I'm so grateful for this ARC! And if you haven't you can go meet Jaime and Finn first, in Under the Lupine Moon! Jaime is one of us and enjoys all the smutty reads 😏
4.5 ⭐️ Oh the secrets in this book 🥹. The plot layers and reveals in this book are phenomenal and the author reveals them wonderfully until that feeling in your stomach that says these two have heartache coming is replaced by they are going to make and take on the bad guys to win!! I loved book one but this book is far more emotional and I wasn’t expecting that and it surprised me in the best way. Silas is swoony and sweet and alpha but he isn’t invincible and the strength he draws from Sammy is all sorts of tender and touching. Sammy has had so much in his shoulders that he shouldn’t have had to deal with since a very young age and honestly my heart broke for him. He is so resilient and I also low key loved his prickly exterior that goes to battle for everyone he loves. I love for Silas just supports and loves him unconditionally. Also while this is a slow burn their chemistry is off the charts and the pining is so hot. Also I loved how more if the lore continues to be discovered and introduced, give me all the great world building this book has to offer.
Expect: * Wolf shifter x human * Opposites attract * Found family * Hurt comfort * Pack dynamics * Touch him and ☠️ * Slow burn to inferno * Pining * Fated mates * Sex worker
This series is not giving me what I thought it would. I was kinda hoping for like a paranormal Star's Hollow vibe. Just like supernatural beings going about their business in a cute small town, some action, some romance, some freaky shifter sex. And okay, yes, we get that, but I also got a really overwrought, corny, try-hard kind of romance. It's my own fault for reading a fated-mates story, I don't think I've ever really enjoyed one.
The second couple in the Silver Rapids saga is Silas and Sam, who we already know from book 1. I will say that I wish I'd read these two books closer together, because I really struggled to remember details from book 1, and I felt pretty lost for a lot of this book. Anyway, Sam (the human) is on the receiving end of a bizarre attack on his home and ends up staying with Silas (wolf shifter) for a bit. Silas has already decided that Sam is his one true mate and so he basically spends 70% of the book trying to coax the prickly Sam into a relationship. It could have been cute and fun if there was a bit of levity in it, but this book just takes itself so seriously. Sure, the plot is pretty hectic and serious. But everyone is just so earnest and sincere ALL OF THE TIME. And sure there was some plot relating to Silas stepping into his alpha role and Sam's mysterious dealings with shady characters, but I was actually fairly bored.
Knightly is not a bad writer, and this is not a bad premise, so maybe I'm just in a mood, but it was too cheesy.
Silas and Sam gave me everything I needed and more. I was worried that it might be too suspenseful for me right now because I’m in my Weenie Hut Jr. era but they were perfect. 🥹
Sam with his secrets and Silas with his obsession. Their first meeting was adorable and explained why Silas was acting off around him in UtLM. Silas is nothing if not persistent thought.
Sam and all of his prickles turned out to be the sweetest acts of service man. He just needed to know that he wasn’t in this alone.
I loved that we got to see some action while keeping the story fairly low angst. It was a very happy medium.
I’m excited for Riley and Buck and Shep and Gabe. Shep has a backstory that I just need to know. 🥹
This was an amazing followup to the first book in my opinion.
I received a complimentary copy of this book but this is my honest and voluntary review! 🖤
Silas and Sammy’s story! I don’t want to spoil the plot, since it’s definitely more intricate than the last book! But in this one you can expect: fated mates (but they fight the bond), a protective werewolf boyfriend, strong family bonds, and mystery!
The plot and writing has definitely leveled up from the last book! This book features a dual timeline, but it isn’t hard to follow. You definitely need to read book one to enjoy this one, though!
Silas is protective and strong, and shows that vulnerability is sometimes our greatest strength. Whereas Sammy learns that sometimes being honest and open with people is the hardest, yet most rewarding thing you can do.
I really enjoyed this one! The pacing of the story was good, and the balance between spicy romantic goodness and plot was done well, too.
This book was a lot of fun. Silas was such a bright spot in Under the Lupine Moon so I loved getting to see more about him and his journey since the big reveal at the end of that book. OMG I LOVED THE PROLOGUE TO THIS. I think it added a really sweet element to him and Sammy's story as mates. Sammy has put up so many walls around himself trying to be a good brother to Jamie and I loved seeing how he was able to put trust in Silas and let himself be taken care of for once.
Thank you A. Knightley for an ARC of Below the Hunter Moon!
Sammy was so cold and rough around the edges in the first book, I really wasn’t expecting him to actually be a total softie with a bratty streak and a breeding kink. Like damn. And Silas was down bad for all sides of Sammy.
I enjoyed the plot - how all the secrets and lies intertwined and came out. I loved the letter Sammy wrote - I too would need to write it all down to make sure I didn’t miss anything🙃 I would love to see Silas’s alpha powers explored more and the new pack dynamics! But overall, I just loved the sweet softness and angst between Silas and Sammy.
I was lucky to get to read an early copy of this book and while I adored Under the Lupine Moon, prickly little hedgehogs like Sammy will always be my weak spot in life.
There’s something about how Silas gradually knocks down Sam’s fortress of walls just by being so constant and relentless in his affection that turned me to goo.
The plot of this story had me flying through the pages and I honestly loved every second of it. It was a joy to be back in Silver Rapids and I never want to leave!
"All the walls you throw up around that heart of yours won't stop me. I'll wait forever for them to crumble."
Oh my goodness I had all the emotions while reading this. I was giggling, laughing, crying, on the edge of my seat, blushing...everything. I didn't want to stop reading but I also didn't want it to end. I just love these characters and how relatable they are.
When we found out all of Sam's secrets...cue the floodgates. I was so relieved when he finally told Silas everything and he had that support. Silas was such a good friend. He was there to support Sam even knowing that he had secrets. I loved seeing scenes from book 1 but from Silas and Sam's POV. And of course seeing Finn and Jaimie again!
The tension was perfection. And when they finally lost the battle and slept together? Chef's kiss. Silas has quite the filthy mouth. 🥵
I'm a sucker for the found family trope and this book had all the good warm and fuzzy found family vibes. I can't wait to see who the next couple is!
This book was everything I hoped it would be. I really enjoyed reading the first Silver Rapids book, and the world building that came with it. Now with the foundation built, I feel like the story really came to life. We got the resolutions we needed from the plot in book 1, and then some new characters that I hope to read more in the future.
This is the second book in the Silver Rapids series and follows Silas, Finn’s best friend, and Sam Lamont, Jamie’s older brother. Silas has never wanted to be an alpha, but when an old enemy reappears in his life, he may not have a choice. This is compounded when he meets Sam, grumpy and sad Sam, who Silas is pretty sure is his mate. Sam has been keeping secrets, from his brother and everyone else. Wracked with guilt and terrified of the monsters of his own making, Sam is determined to stay away from Silas. But he can’t help but feel drawn to him. Can he share his secrets with Silas? Or will Silas turn him away once he knows what Sam’s done?
Ever since I finished Under the Lupine Moon in January, I’ve been looking forward to Silas’s and Sam’s story. Especially because of Sam, who really intrigued me. I wanted to know what he was hiding behind those walls of his. And of course, by the end of Below the Hunter Moon, I just wanted to hug him and take care of him BECAUSE HE IS PRECIOUS AND DESERVES LOVE AND CARE 🩷
I LOVED this book! It was so hard to put down, I was hooked right from the start. I loved Sam and Silas 🩷 The moments between them were so cute and sweet, and ofc, steamy. Fated mates and hurt/comfort are two of my favourite tropes, and I loved how Knightley incorporated them into this story. It was also amazing to get a bit more of Finn and Jamie (YOUR HONOUR, I LOVE THEM). The plot was very intriguing and had a lot of mystery to it, which I enjoyed. Overall, I just loved everything about this and it made me cry, but it also made me happy, and then sad again when I finished it.
I also have to say that like Silas, I too wanted to know Derek’s last name and home address 😈
I was able to get an ARC of this and OH MY GOD it was so good, maybe even better than the first!! I enjoyed how in some spots in ran parallel with book one (FUCKING MOOSE), as well as the novella (Silas finding Jamie’s Halloween costume was FOUL I loved it), and I loved getting to know Silas and Sam more. I can’t wait for the next installment (give me Sheppard and Rivera or give me death) and I’m excited to see where the story goes from here!
Ughhhh I love this so much! I’ve been itching for Sam and Silas’s story since reading Under the Lupine Moon last year and it was everything I wanted and way more.
A.Knightly has created an incredible world that draws you in from the moment you step into it and keeps you hooked until the very last word.
If you’ve read UtLM, you will have seen little teasers of Sam and Silas, and even more if you’ve read the Halloween novella By the Blood Moon (I highly recommend you don’t skip that one!), but in BtHM we get to see how Sam and Silas navigated their fears for their brothers during the events of the first book, apart and together.
Silas is such a big softie, a gentle giant that would go to the ends of the earth to protect Sam. And Sam, my little prickly peach…he loves so fiercely and puts everyone he cares about before himself, but as soon as he lets Silas break down his walls he lets himself be taken care of for once and they’re so perfectly matched.
There are so many surprises and twists in their story, that I won’t give away, but I loved every single one of them. They had me gasping, kicking my feet, and tearing up throughout.
I love the found family element and the pack that this series centres around, and I can’t wait to read more. I need Cam and Gabriel’s story please and thank you!
Things are changing in Silver Rapids, and Silas is reluctantly pushed into his birthright role as alpha. He knows he can’t do this alone, but what can he do when the one person he can’t live without doesn’t want him back?
A. Knightley did it again I absolutely LOVED Sammy + Silas!! I connected with Sam on such a deep level. He’s so sassy and prickly, but so damn sweet 🥹
If you loved ‘Under the Lupine Moon’ - you’re going to LOVE the sequel!
• Wolf Shifter x Human • Fated Mates • Grumpy x Sunshine • Size Difference • Forced Proximity • Knotting • Dirty Talk 🥵🥵🥵

“All the walls you throw up around that heart of yours won’t stop me. I’ll wait forever for them to crumble.”
BLURB START:
Silas Granger never wanted to be an alpha. His lifelong avoidance is challenged, though, when a prickly redhead storms through his front door, igniting a blaze in Silas' heart and awakening instincts that were long since buried. Everyone keeps secrets, but Sam Lamont has more than most-and he'd prefer it to stay that way. Or would he? His resolve is shaken when a giant, oafish wolf-shifter tears down his walls-literally and figuratively-determined to protect him. Even Silas can't keep him safe from everything, though, especially when Sam's monsters are of his own making.
BLURB END:
This was so good just with Silver rapids needed I have been so excited to read Sam and Silas‘s story since they were introduced in Finn and Jamie‘s story below the Hunter moon is the second book of the silver rapids series and I’m so happy to introduce you to the series if you’re starting from this review let’s get started
You can expect so much paining and tension from this book. It was a lot of found family aspects and a lot of dirty talk which is delightful. below the hunter moon is also a shift of romance between Sam and Silas Sam is the brother to the previous main character and book one Jamie and Silas is the best friend to Jamie‘s fated mate Finn who is also a wolf shifter as well as Silas.
I always thought Sam’s initial story about the stalker was a little fishy you could tell something was wrong in the first book when he was talking to Jamie
Sam is incredibly hard on himself about how much he think he’s not needed or that he could just get away with running away from everything when obviously there’s so many people that wants him in their lives and I’m so glad that Silas, Jamie and Finn are all there to help him understand that he is important and needed and everybody makes mistakes
Also quick sidestep what do we think about the whole finn’s showing up?
Also let me see this. I know we haven’t really gotten to know them, but I’m really invested in buck and this new little wolf Riley I really hope Riley bad his brother comes back to silver rapids cause i since some while chemistry between him and buck but also I’m dead note talking about the hopeful future for silver rapids couples I really hope Shepherd find his mate so all the boys can have their happy ending
I will officially like to announce the king and king of dirty talk And to the VERY hot, Hot intimate adventures I’ll applaud you cause that was exquisite
I rated this book a 4 out of 5 stars. My own critic is that the slow burn was so hard to read considering it all could’ve been avoided if they had sat down and talk together but then again we wouldn’t have this delicious painting tension between these amazing boys, I really think this is something you should add to your TBR But remember to form your own opinions and not just take after me. Until next time, my loves…
Rating: 4/5 Spice: 3/5 Angst: 3/5 Would I read again: yeps

What to Expect 🐺 Wolf shifter x human 👨🏻🦰 Found family 🐺 Knotting 👨🏻🦰 Slow burn (but once it catches … 😥) 🐺 Size difference 👨🏻🦰 Grumpy/sunshine 🐺 Forced proximity 👨🏻🦰 Only one bed
Summary Silas and Sam meet not-so-cute when their brothers—both blood and chosen—fall in love while solving the murder-mystery surrounding all of them. Silas quickly realizes that Sam is his mate, which stirs up feelings that Silas has lived his whole life trying to ignore. Namely, his alpha side, because he has never wanted to be an alpha like his uncle: violent, manipulative, and evil. Once Silas finds his mate, though, his instincts can’t be helped, but he needs Sam around to help him step into the role he was meant to have.
Sam, as a human, has no idea they’re fated. All he knows is that he has a ton of secrets that prevent him from having the man he wants so badly from the moment they see each other. Unfortunately, Sam’s secrets put even Silas and those around them in danger, and he is sure that because of all the trouble he has brought upon himself, he deserves neither Silas nor any of the family and friends that seem such a large, comforting part of the alpha’s life. With all that is stacked against them, how does Silas convince Sam to take a risk, and how does Sam keep himself from running?
My Thoughts I’ll be blunt: this is a hard one to write without spoilers, because there’s so much good stuff here! A real meet-cute, a heart-tugging HEA … even the dedication is good. As mentioned, this is the second book in the Silver Rapids series, and as much as I liked the first, I enjoyed Below the Hunter Moon even more. Whether A. Knightley feels more settled as an author, or whether the story feels more established because of the world-building done in the first book, the writing here is better.
Not that the first book is poorly written by any means; that’s 100% not what I mean. But the writing here flows more easily, even with its flash-forward/flashback structure. The dialogue appears more natural, the sex scenes seem more fleshed out, and the events that take place in the story feel more evenly placed but still unpredictable. As someone whose pattern-recognition skills ruin a lot of surprises (thanks, ADHD!), I absolutely love reading a book where I have moments of “I don’t know where this is going.” I don’t want to read something that leaves me confused, but it’s OK to wonder what’s coming next. Now, I just wanna know what’s coming in Book #3!
Bottom Line Be warned: the ol’ miscommunication trope does rear its head here, even though it’s central to one of the MC’s motivations and is done for what he thinks are the right reasons. If that’s a deal-breaker for you, then you might want to skip this one. But if you’re like me and accept that miscommunication, while difficult, is a part of real life, then go grab yourself a copy ASAP! (Prior reading isn’t required but is recommended for the fun of it, and also maybe to help follow the flash-forwards/flashbacks.) And as I always tell you, check the content warnings, as one does. Happy reading! — A
Thanks to A. Knightley for an eARC of this book. All opinions are mine.
