I was really pulled into this book because while I'm not the biggest country music fan anymore I still know who the artists are and some of the songs. I've always loved getting to see inside the mind of the artist with their song creation process, so having actual interviews with the artists in this book was one of the biggest pluses. It's amazing how a whole song can come from just a random thought, or a feeling, or just situation that the artist was involved in or witnessed. I really like the songs where the artist is pulling out deep traumatic memories and turning them into songs, I see that as a way for them to help and access that it happened but they can survivor and still continue on.

As a lifelong country music fan, I was completely into this book—I’ve always wanted to know the stories behind the lyrics of the songs I’ve fallen in love with. This book takes you right into the heart of the Nashville songwriting scene, with real interviews from the songwriters and the artists themselves.

I was blown away by how these songs are born—sometimes out of a single idea, a fleeting feeling, or even just a line scribbled down—and then shaped into the hits we hear on the radio. Some came together in just mere minutes, while others took weeks, months, or even years to finally land.

I found myself invested in every detail, from the struggles and setbacks to the sparks of inspiration that turned into chart-topping anthems. Each story gave me a whole new appreciation for the songs I already love.

The book does go deep, with a lot of information dedicated to each song, which might feel overwhelming for some. But if you’re a true country music fan like me, you’ll find it fascinating and well worth the read.

I desperately wanted to love this book because of my love of Nashville, country music and knowing the songwriters behind the songs but unfortunately there were so many grammatical errors, incorrect words, incorrect spelling of the word in the context that it was being used and weird formatting that it completely took away from the experience for me.

Just a couple examples near the end of the book:

Tenor eleven instead of ten OR eleven
Brakes instead of breaks

When I first started reading this book, I counted at least six errors before I was even halfway through. It’s extremely disappointing to see lack of editing when reading something professionally published.

This is a book that fits well with my niche interests, with songwriting stories from many of Nashville's legendary songwriters. The focus is very much on the songwriting and the individuals who do that. The only downside is that there's very little narrative structure (some of this may have been due to formatting in the e-galley so I'm not dinging it for that), it really is more interview style with the writers telling their stories in an authentic way.

I'm not sure why I chose to listen to this book (apart from seeing it on Netgalley and thinking it sounded interesting), because country music isn't really my jam. I thought back-stories sounded cool though.

I didn't know a lot of the songs they were referring to (but I'm sure a country fan would) and there was the odd snippet of interesting ways the song came about but for the most part it was about the song writers (who I'm sure are all AMAZING) and how they wrote. There's a lot of information (an info dump in some parts) but, for me, it wasn't as engaging or as intriguing as I was hoping for.

This book is the backstory to all your favorite country songs . I love how this book takes you behind the scenes in Nashville with actual interviews with the songwriters and artists. The stories about how the hit songs were written are so interesting. Some hits took a long time to write and some were written in 20 minutes. It really does take a special gift to be a hit songwriter and they never get enough credit for it. If you are a fan of country music and you are interested in what goes into writing a hit song then this book is for you. Thanks @NetGalley for the ARC of this book.
