This is book five of the Eden Mercer K-9 Mystery Thriller series and Eden has enrolled herself and her K-9 partner Shadow into an elite search and rescue training course in the small town of Juniper Wells, Arizona, but she has a second reason for being there which she has kept secret from her friends and colleagues. Her estranged father is the head of a cult she escaped years ago with one of her younger sisters but had to leave behind her mother and her other young siblings. Something she has thought of ever since. Now her father has got in touch with her, telling her that her mother is dying and if she wants to see her, she needs to come alone to meet with his representative at the Utah border. Her close colleague and mentor Hank, at Nightfall PD in Oregon, is not happy when he finds out why she is really at the training course and warns her against meeting her father. Her first day at her course starts early on and she finds out the others on the course all know each other and are part of the local search and rescue (SAR) team, as well as a well-known trainer, Maggie, who had worked with the group a few years ago. Strangely, all the other participants are working with new dogs, which is very unusual since it usually takes years to train a dog! On top of that, the others are leaving one of the team isolated and every time he tries to come and speak to Eden, one of them interrupts! Sammy is a military veteran and K-9 handler, with years of experience but who left the local search and rescue team recently, with what seems to be an issue from the others on the team. Something strange is going on and the more time that goes by, the more Eden becomes concerned about the way they work with their dogs. She has a lot of previous training in search and rescue and her dog Shadow announces when someone is found, whereas the other dogs act very threatening and are absolutely silent when they find someone, which seems completely opposite to what they should do. The rest of the team act together to make Sammy be the victim needing to be found for their first pretend rescue. But that soon brings her questions, when he is found dead from a suspected animal attack. It doesn’t sit well with her, and she decides to investigate, which puts her in danger.

Added to all this is the additional stress of reminders of how long until she is to meet her father and members of the cult. Threats come from one of the team members in particular, but she had no idea of just how far this team have corrupted the training purposes of their dogs. There is something sinister going on with them all, but she can’t figure out who else might be involved in the death of Sammy, once an animal attack seems less and less likely. Deputy Running Bear is the officer who comes to investigate Sammy’s death, with the others all pushing the animal attack front, but Eden won’t take it as a given until an autopsy is done. Eden starts asking questions and soon gets left a calling card, showing she is getting a little bit too close for comfort. The other SAR dogs are acting feral, rather than in their right minds, far too aggressive to Eden and Maggie’s minds. The other team members have been giving her faulty equipment and sending her in the wrong direction, which in these slot canyons, could be deadly. Eden doesn’t get on well with Running Bear to start, being seen as an outsider, but gets on better as time goes by and the truth of Sammy’s death is revealed. An outside source is pushing for more trained dogs for his next event and the pressure is on Brock and his friends to fulfil the order. The aggressive side Eden has noticed from the other dogs and their handlers, will soon make sense when connected to the sick millionaire and his needs! Running Bear follows the money in relation to Sammy, to try and figure out why he was killed and by who. A well-hidden shell corporation are behind his payments and the SAR team leader Marcus is certainly deep into the whole situation. More threats come for Eden as she tries to balance finding the veteran’s killer(s) and the stress of returning to the cult to see her mother. Hank and another colleague, as well as her sister Hope, are concerned with her trying to solve this murder, but more so about her turning up to the cult all alone and whether her father would ever let her go! She has put all the pressure upon herself to make Sammy’s killer(s) pay for their actions, but at least has an ally in Running Bear, but time is running out for her to get it done by the time she has to travel to the cult.

Shocking truths will come out about the training of these dogs and the real purposes this team of SAR members, and the wealthy client they are supplying for his sick events. A surprising twist on her planned visit to her mother and the cult and I look forwarded to catching up with Eden and Shadow, to see what comes next! I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout, and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

Oh my gosh! I loved this and will definitely be getting the audio book version to add to my collection, that way I can enjoy it again, just maybe a little less tense. This is the type of book that if I had been reading I would have jumped to the end because I couldn't wait to find out what was going. So it was a good job I was reading the kindle version, otherwise I would have ruined the suspense and climax. I want to say I liked the characters but I spent most of the book mistrusting everybody, well except Eden and her faithful partner Shadow of course, who excel in this book. Eden has grown so much, from how she was in the very first book. The rest of the supporting characters like her mentor, her sister and grandmother aren't present in this book, as Eden and Shadow go it alone but they do provide support which Eden very much needs as she tackles more than one deadly situation. The story is mostly told by Eden as it's her challenges she has to over come and work out but you also get a few perspectives from other characters as the tension builds. This works well to create a gripping read that while I wanted to skip to the end, I also didn't want to end. A series I am glad I discovered because in my opinion it is just getting better and better and I can't wait for the next book.

When the father she escaped from fifteen years earlier offers her one chance to meet up with her dying mother, K-9 Officer Eden Mercer knows it will be hard not to get sucked back into the world that was so hard to escape from in the first place. Rather than sit around in an empty hotel room waiting for them to get in contact, she enrolls her partner in an elite search and rescue training session, with a top trainer. The problem is the rest of the participants taking part in the course are a tight team who works together on rescue missions and they resent outsiders. Eden is no stranger to resentment but even Shadow picks up on the strange atmosphere and behaviour. When one of there own is killed during a training session, things don't add up and Eden turns to the local law for help. With just days before she has to meet her father, can Eden unravel the strange behaviours of both the humans and the dogs in a group that is supposed to help people? Will she and Shadow survive to fight another day?

I was intrigued by the prologue. I was hooked by the premise of K9 training… I was sold on Arizona… in fact there wasn’t a darned thing I didn’t enjoy about this book other than I couldn’t put it down until I was done reading it. (Who needs sleep….)

I really liked the whole tiny little backwater town and would have loved it even more if Eden had been able to explore further but I guess like every other person away on business, you get to see very little apart from the location, the place you lay your head and where you get food.

The descriptions were vivid, I could almost feel the dry, hot desert wind and having seen the red rocks my imagination was running rampant on what could be waiting for Eden way out here.

In fact, the twists are so well written that before I was even 50% of the way through, I though Eden would be done with that town and moving onto meet her dad (the build up for this is nerve wracking and Ms Black keeps us on that hook squirming just like Eden.)

But I also didn’t want it to be done as I really warmed to Deputy Running Bear, and so wanted to know more about her and her life in Juniper Wells and beyond.

But before we’re barely half way through, the twists take the story into the next gear and then we’re racing along barely hanging on to the passenger door as the stakes get higher still.

I had no idea what the endgame was going to be, which is how I love my mystery books. I like to have a good guess, but I also like to be surprised. And I was, even right as the end came I was still surprised.

I feel bereft now… there’s a wait until the next book. I might have to go back to the first book and start again.

Okay, so I just finished "Twisted Pursuit" by Paige Black, and man, my heart was pounding. Imagine this: you're dropped into this dusty, isolated town in Arizona, Juniper Wells. You can almost feel the dry heat and smell the pine trees. That's where Eden, this tough K-9 officer, lands. She's got a secret, right? Family stuff, cults, the whole shebang.
Then, bam, someone gets murdered. And it's not just any murder, it's tied to these big, scary secrets. You can practically hear the tension crackling. Eden's dog, Shadow, is her rock, and you can just picture him, all focused and protective. They're sniffing out clues, and you're right there with them, feeling the danger get closer and closer.
The whole time, Eden's got this ticking clock in her head – her dying mom, her messed-up dad, this cult. It's like she's being pulled in two directions, and you can feel her desperation. The writing is sharp, and you can taste the grit of the desert and the fear in the air.
Honestly, I was hooked. I kept flipping pages, wondering if Eden and Shadow would make it out alive. It's a real page-turner, and if you like suspense with a good dose of heart, you'll love this one.

The mystery was great, but I feel like we slid backwards here. I didn't care for book 3 mainly because of characterization, then book 4 was so much better, and now I feel like we went backwards some which could have been fixed during edits.

The good:
Story premise
Mystery
The action scenes
The new character - Deputy Running Bear

The bad:
Repeated phrases - I mean how many times can you have chills run down your spine. This is just one example - there were a few repeated regularly. A pet peeve of mine.
No Hanks or Wilder - as you can see I liked the new character - who I'm guessing will make another appearance considering her possible proximity to Eden's family. But I fully expected a surprise visit from one of them - so that fell flat for me. Especially since they wanted to be kept in the loop and I feel like the Wilder connection was forgotten about by half-way through the book.

Thank you to the author and BookSprout for providing an eARC of this book. All opinions are my own.

Paige Black’s Twisted Pursuit is filled with page after page of action, excitement, suspense and intrigue. It almost leaves you breathless wondering what will happen next, and whether Eden and Shadow will get out safely. This is a really exciting story that keeps you turning the pages not wanting it to end. The treachery of the “evil” characters is very well depicted. I liked the way Deputy Running Bear fits so well into the story and hope she show up in future Eden Mercer books. It is my favorite Paige Black book so far. It takes place in the deserts of Arizona, and the descriptions of the heat, dryness and treacherous conditions of being in one of the canyons when a sudden storm comes up are so accurate. Flash floods are a fact and can be very dangerous. You will definitely enjoy it. Keep them coming Paige.

For some things in this book, I knew right off the bat something wasn't right with those characters.....I had a bad feeling with the dogs. I'm hoping that was the extent of the harm with the dogs, but something tells me it was not. Sammy broke my heart...and Cowboy. That was a hard one to swallow. He was someone you wanted to got to know. Shadow is definitely my favorite. I really enjoyed Detective Running Bear. She's a good character I think that needs to be in Eden's life. Constantly. With the way they were acting ....that was a big clue. So it was easy to put together. But something is missing.. it's probably me, but something felt missing . BUT having said that, it's a great mystery and a great story loved it.

Action-packed

In the Arizona desert, Eden has joined a specialist dog-training class, where she and her faithful Shadow will learn advanced search and rescue techniques. Following the class, Eden is going to meet with her dreaded father, cult leader and manipulator, in slim hope of reuniting with her mother and siblings. Before then, though, Eden realizes that something is off with the training class, and her curiosity about this nearly gets her killed several times. There are very thrilling escapades in this book, set in a harsh landscape that takes its own shot at killing Eden and Shadow. As ever, a solid entry in a very good series.

Another heart stopping thriller by Paige Black. In the next installment of the series staring K-9 officer Eden Mercer and it doesn't disappoint. Eden has enrolled in an elite search and rescue training course in a remote area known as Juniper Falls. Eden has a private reason for wanting to go to the area. Her estranged father has finally given her a chance to reunite with her dying mother but only if Eden agrees to meet the cult leader alone on the Utah border. When a murder happens things go south quickly.

Paige Black has delivered another gripping, page turning Eden Mercer mystery. This time, Eden and Shadow are on location in Arizona for special K9 training. I missed the Night Fall, Oregon setting and our usual cast of characters. However, there were plenty of interesting new characters to meet. I appreciate the ongoing story in the background, involving Eden’s family.

This was a good mystery....after awhile you were not sure who Eden should trust (with the exception of Shadow of course.) Eden undertakes a different type of survival /search and rescue course near where her father said he would meet her. The makeupof the group is a bit off at first and just gets stranger as time goes on. The people are hostile, the dogs are aggressive and someone gets murdered.Somehow Eden is in the middle of all of this and needs to figure it out. Very well written.

WOW OH WOW,Mercer at her best or worst on the move first to last

Eden Mercer is going for extra training in Arizona. She and Shadow are in way over their heads. She might not stay alive long enough to keep the tryst with her hated father at the end of seven days.
. I stayed up to read this book last night when I had planned to just open it. Should have known better can’t miss anything in her stories once I stick my nose in.

Search and Rescue

Eden goes to a training camp for a week to improve her skills working with Shadow, her rescue dog. Beginning with the first morning training the Club she was with were standoffish. Eden felt it was due to her being an outsider but as the week progressed one of the group died and several were acting threatening to her. Escaping with her life, Eden traveled to a site to meet her father's people to see her mom and siblings.

engrossing tale

What a story! Wealthy, entitled mogul in his ivory tower….

Eden, still focused on finding her mother and siblings, enrolls in a one-week SARS training seminar in Arizona near the location indicated by her contact within her family’s cult.

But the atmosphere at the seminar is fraught, and the training becomes a true test of survival skills.

Twisted Pursuit. quite a thriller for sure!,

I loved the twists and turns in this story. It had me on the edge of my seat. Powerful events. Eden is a great character. So realistic are all the characters. But nothing was mentioned about her family , her mom and siblings in the end.? Great plot, exciting turnarounds. Read Paige Blacks books. You will not be able to put them down.

Hanging in there

Elle joins a search and rescue camp for 7 days, and on her 2nd day, one of the guys dies, and at first, it looks accidental, but later, things change to danger for herself. This book will worry all the way through it, and at the same time, she has to think about her family.

This story is terrifying, thrilling, exciting and overwhelming.

The main character is a police officer and K-9 handler who was raised in a cult where her father was the undisputed and cruel leader. She is courageous, stubborn and determined to rescue her mother and siblings from her father.

This one is full of action as Eden & Shadow go to Arizona for a week-long K9 training class. She's not welcomed by the other "students", five of whom are a local search and rescue team. Something is off, not just their group dynamics, but how overly aggressive their dogs appear. After the class, Eden is scheduled to go see her mother at her old cult's current location.
