The young deputy district attorney on the other side of the table reminded me of a hawk. Dominick Barnard was tall and bony with a curved nose, and his face was covered in sweat. His dark hair had enough gel to make sure his messy mop stayed in place all day, even with the rainstorm dumping buckets of water just outside the diner door. Barnard’s skin was so pale that I thought he might be sick, probably because he never went outdoors for long. They worked them hard at the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s office.
We were at Denny’s, and I waited to drop the bomb until after we’d ordered breakfast but before it was delivered.
Barnard’s hand trembled as he read the affidavit I’d just given him. I followed his eyes and saw he was halfway through the first page.
“Tell Cal Dobson he has twenty-four hours to drop all charges against my client,” I said.
I felt bad for the kid and hated that he had to bear the brunt of this. That’s why I was addressing him as if he were the messenger.
“And then I’ll take this matter out of his hands, and it will get ugly,” I added as the waiter delivered our food. I took a sip of my orange juice but didn’t reach for a fork, not yet. I didn’t want to distract him from his reading.
Barnard had been cocky before he’d seen the affidavit. He now bit his lip, turning whiter the further he got. I’d gotten the feeling when we’d first met up that he was proud to be doing this on his own, but he probably now wished he had the more senior Deputy District Attorney Cal Dobson with him.

Explaining this one is complicated. As is the story. We follow Kirk Hoffman, an attorney who only represents the innocent and works behind the scenes to help his clients. The protagonist is Dwayne Sachs, an online influencer and the son of a former client. Hoffman will take the case against all odds.
This book is too long. The plot has more holes than Swiss cheese and the characters are way to undeveloped and one-minded. I give a star only for Kirk Hoffman, which is a interesting main character although not likable at all. If not it’s a one star.
The protagonist is a narcissist and the story needs an excel spreadsheet to follow. I did not care who did it by the time I got to the end, and was really wishing someone would off the protagonist.
This is one of those Stories that you just can't put down. The action kept coming and coming. It ended up so involved that I never would have figured it out without explicit instructions. I really live the characters in the law firm. Everyone is so diverse, it makes it extra interesting.
I couldn't put this book down once I started reading it. I thought it would be a typical legal thriller (which I would have been happy with) but the characters and the story are all very unique. I kept telling myself, "Just one more chapter" until I realized the book was finished. I can't wait to read another book by Dan Decker.
Once you start this book it is hard to put down. Never know what turns it will take. All characters are easy to believe they are the bad guys. Decker is one of my favourite authors.
The story line is so back and forth, it becomes almost too convoluted to follow, and I am a dedicated mystery reader. Reading the internal talk of Hoffman was more distracting than enlightening
I should have rated it just 2 stars. It wasn’t up to the quality and interest that I found in other books by the author. It was very confusing and difficult to follow. I lost interest midway through and skimmed it the rest of the way.
I really enjoyed this book. It started as a routine legal thriller but quickly morphed into an exciting story with a lot of twists and turns. The protagonist was especially well written. Highly recommend!
A dreary read: too convoluted and too long. I didn't relate to most of the characters. The storyline was too far fetched . For me a rating of 5 out of 10.
