Highland Hall #1

Kilts and Kisses at Highland Hall

Rate this book
A BRAND NEW series set in the Scottish Highlands, from bestselling author Hannah Lynn!

Numbers don't lie, and neither does the heart...

When straight-laced London accountant Rebecca Barker arrives at neglected Highland Hall armed with spreadsheets, strategies, and a surefire plan, she has absolutely no intention of mixing business with pleasure. But the estate's brooding groundskeeper, Duncan MacDuffrey, is a variable she hadn't accounted for.

Heartbroken, Duncan focuses on managing the rambling estate while keeping his heart firmly locked away. But something about this career-focused city girl, with her perfectly pressed suits and hidden wit, makes him want to risk it all again—even as the entire village tries to keep them apart.

Between professional boundaries and a fiercely protective Highland community, a romance should be the last thing on either of their minds. Yet as mists roll in from the Loch and across the estate, even the most careful calculations can add up to love.

A laugh-out-loud enemies-to-lovers romantic comedy perfect for fans of Portia MacIntosh and Sophie Kinsella.

This was a really sweet story with an incredibly beautiful setting. I mean, who doesn't love a story set in a castle in Scotland.

Rebecca is an ambitious accountant in London, who gets sent to Scotland to sort out years of accounts for a grumpy lord. There she meets Duncan, his groundskeeper, and sparks start to fly. He might not be over his ex, she doesn't want to mix business and pleasure, but maybe they are perfect for each other anyway. But, she's only there for two months.

This being set in a castle in Scotland was a sure way of making me love it from the start. I would give anything to go there.

I loved Bex and Duncan, they were so cute together. Honestly, I fell in love with Duncan the moment he bought her earplugs, just because she said that every day she gets woken up too early by birds. We love a man that listens and does something about it immediately.
Fergus, her boss, was such a grump, yet such a softie. He really grew on me. I have a feeling we have more things to discover about him and his life. I have a theory about something, and I really hope that I'm right.
I really loved the small town and all the people we met, especially Lorna and her friends. She was such a great sister to Duncan and I loved the way she immediately welcomed Bex in her friend group.
Also, Ruby and Kenna were the most adorable animal addition to this story.

I was really enjoying myself reading this story, until the conflict happened. I got so mad I literally had to stop and go touch some grass to calm down. I really hate drama being randomly thrown in. Can we stop doing that, please.
The ending was also pretty abrupt so I'm looking forward to the next book.

Overall, it was a quick and lighthearted read and I had fun reading it.

Who knew spreadsheets and Scottish charm could be such a swoon-worthy combo?

Kilts and Kisses at Highland Hall is a warm, witty escape to the Highlands that delivers the perfect blend of grumpy-sunshine romance, small-town meddling, and heartfelt moments. When no-nonsense London accountant Rebecca arrives to whip Highland Hall into shape, falling for the ruggedly handsome, emotionally guarded groundskeeper wasn’t in the business plan—but love isn’t always logical.

A thoroughly feel-good read with all the Highland magic you could want. Can’t wait for the next in the series!

I really liked this book, I loved the characters, plot and the setting, but now I’m just kind of shocked and I guess I feel the end was super abrupt????

I was under the impression this was a standalone, but apparently it’s an interconnected standalone? The FMC was in a previous book? 🤷🏻‍♀️
I’m still not completely sure because it’s not listed as apart of a series on Goodreads, and because of the super abrupt end if it’s a standalone, that’s even more confusing.

I would definitely read this if it’s a series and I really hope it is because damn now I need to know!!!!!!

This was a fun book. I enjoyed the story immensely and it was a joy to read.

The cover was great and has a colour palette that pops. It makes it stand out!

The book is written well and flows perfectly. The descriptions are good and I found the book to be full of charm, wit and humour.

The Highlands setting was stunning. I do love books set in Scotland. The Hall sounds quaint which I liked.

The characters were excellent and fit into their roles well. I liked Bex and Duncan and loved how their story unfolded. Their interactions were excellent.

I really recommend this to you all. I am definitely going to be checking out the rest of Hannah's books.

Thank you Hannah Lynn, Boldwood Books and Netgalley for the ARC.

This was such a cute read. I love the city girl to small town shift in picturesque Scotland.

The characters were utterly endearing. Main and side cast alike! Fergus especially gave major “grumpy old uncle with a gooey center” vibes. Ruby the dog might be the MVP here.

I loved that the FMC didn’t hold back when the MMC tried to use her to get his ex’s attention. However, I didn’t expect it from MMC’s character to do that. It’s sad since he had all the makings of a green flag king. It felt a little off-brand. He definitely made up for it though.

The ending felt a little underwhelming. Particularly around Bex’s inner tug-of-war about her future. I would’ve loved a deeper dive into the life she dreams of beyond romance.

Still, this is a charming recommendation for anyone craving cozy, small-town romcom energy, wrapped in lush green hills, mirror-like lochs, and just the right amount of drama.

✨Book Review✨

I was lucky enough to join @lovebookstours to get an ARC for Kilts and Kisses at Highland Hall by @hannahlynnwrites This was such a fun read! The characters were so well developed and who doesn’t love the highland vibes! Side note, after reading this I told my husband that we are going taking a trip to Scotland next year. 🤞🏻

This story follows Rebecca, an accountant from the big city who is told to go to a small village in the Highlands to support a client in getting his bookkeeping in order. As the only ‘single/ unattached” person at the Firm she was the first choice to head out of town for a few months. As someone that works in the accounting industry (although not an accountant) I loved how Rebecca navigated working her way up the later in a traditionally male dominated role in public practice. She was a strong hardworking character who just wanted to get her big promotion with no distractions.

We then get to meet the charming Duncan. Who can resist a brooding (and sexy AF) golden retriever MMC who is navigating a broken heart. I have to say the side characters really made it for me though. Being in a small village the locals welcomed Rebecca into their circle with hilarious banter and found family vibes with a little mystery woven in. Although, by far my favourite character would have to be the adorable pup, Ruby.

I highly recommend this book for a light summer read. I could not put this down and read it in one sitting!

I was obsessed with the Wildflower Lock series and the characters in that book and now one of the characters Bex has her own series and I'm just as obsessed. I'm desperate to read book 2, i already know its going to be good.

Hannahs books are so easy to read, I devoured this one in a day. I just fall into them from the first page.

If you have never read a Hannah Lynn book, pick one up, you won't regret it.

Summary: Rebecca is up for a promotion at her accounting firm, and her boss Nigel tasks her with going to a small Scottish village- Loch Darroch. A friend to Nigel's father (Fergus)is the laird of the castle and needs help bookkeeping his accounts. Duncan is the handsome groundskeeper that Bex is attracted to but wants to keep things professional.

🤔 My Thoughts: This was a light-hearted romance set in the Scottish countryside with goats and nosy villagers. Bex tried to keep Duncan at a distance, but he kept asking her out until she finally gave in. Lorna and Fergus were their relationship cheerleaders while Duncan's ex Katty tried to get him back. There was a misunderstanding that caused Bex to pack up her stuff to return to London, but her friends swoop in to keep her there with Duncan. In the epilogue, their relationship was unsure because of the long distance, but they'll work it out. Ruby and Kenna were the MVPs🐕🐈!

Sorry but the blurb is misleading.
1, It’s not an “enemies to lovers” story
2. Bex is not “strait laced.” And she doesn’t arrive armed with spreadsheets and a plan. Until she arrives, she doesn’t actually know what is facing her. It takes her a week to sort out the paperwork and separate the rubbish from the personal and the accounting stuff.
3. Duncan is not “brooding,“ he is the softest sweetest and most straightforward of men.
4. It’s not ‘laugh-out loud’ and frankly, I would not describe it as a romcom. It’s a romance.
5. There is no community conspiracy to keep Duncan and Bex apart. Yes the community is protective towards Duncan and his sister does warn Bex from taking advantage of Duncan - but the idea that the community is collectively working against Bex is totally misleading.

This is a pleasant enough read, until we get to the ‘Black’ moment. This was so unreal and so manufactured as to thoroughly annoy me and throw me out of the story. I was horrified by Bec’s reactions.

I hate conflict and breakups based on misunderstandings. I’ve always been told that if an obstacle could’ve been sorted by a straightforward conversation then it doesn’t count as conflict - but is just lazy writing. What was the editor doing, letting this plot device stay?

The potential conflict of Bex’s ambitions for her career in London versus the relationship with Duncan could’ve created a third act breakup much more easily and more believably than for her to believe Duncan was the father of Katty‘s child. And for her to ignore his messages or refuse to speak to him this was the act of an adolescent not a 30-year-old woman! I was so angry with her.

The ending was rushed and unsatisfying.

I liked so much of this book until the last section which was totally unsatisfactory and emotionally disappointing. It’s well written and I enjoyed enough of it to make me want to try other books by this author.

**Thank you to NetGalley for providing an advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review.**

I really liked the potential this story had—it had the foundation for a compelling narrative and engaging characters, but unfortunately, the execution fell short for me in several areas.

I wish the author had spent more time developing Bex’s life before she left home. Chapter 1 jumps straight into her being sent off to work, which made it difficult to grasp what she was giving up and lessened the emotional impact of that transition.

In the first third of the book, I struggled to relate to Bex. She often came across as judgmental, making surface-level assumptions about those around her, which made it harder to connect with her character. This disconnect persisted through much of the story, and by the halfway mark, I was seriously considering DNFing. The central relationship felt shallow and lacked chemistry, making it difficult to become invested in their dynamic.

A large portion of the book is devoted to Bex's internal monologue about why she and Duncan shouldn’t be together, rather than showing us meaningful interactions between them. Because of this, the romance felt underdeveloped and missed the emotional depth that readers expect from this kind of story.

Additionally, I noticed a disconnect between how the book is being marketed and the actual content. It’s labeled as an "enemies to lovers" story on the author’s Instagram, but that trope doesn’t really apply here. The dynamic lacks the tension and emotional stakes typically associated with it. Similarly, describing Duncan as "brooding" doesn’t quite fit his character as written.

This story had promise, but ultimately, it didn’t land for me. With more development in both character background and relationship building, it could have been a much more engaging read.

This is a light hearted and fun read, and it was a good choice for me as I had several hours on the train and this proved to be a good companion.

So, a castle, a grumpy laird, some relatives, a small community, dogs, and a city girl! You just know this is going to be fun. Not so much for Rebecca Barker though... She was expecting a promotion when she was called into the boss's office, instead she is told she is the one who is trusted enough to sort through the accounts that belong to the owner of the scottish castle. The castle looks good from a distance but closer up it is not great, but there is a job to do and there is the expectation that she will be there for around 3 months. It soon turns out that even 3 months may not be long enough, especially when she starts getting side tracked by the help Duncan.

Their first encounter is fun and this continues through the book. The community may be spread out but they do look out for each other and Rebecca soon finds herself feeling welcomed but with a warning to be careful with Duncan. He is available but apparently not emotionally ready, but then he didn't expect to meet Rebecca the way he did.

This is one of those books that you can easily sit and while away a few hours with, it is light hearted but at times does have some more serious notes to it. The mountains of accounts are just the tip of the iceberg for Rebecca as she begins the mammoth job of sorting things out. But as she makes headway with those she is also getting to know the area and the people.

This is a lovely story that is full of charm, humour and some giggles. A good lighthearted story with a lovely sense of community and some fabulous characters. If you are a fan of contemporary romance and romance then this is a book that I would be happy to recommend.

Set in a small village in the Scottish highlands called LochDaroch. Our FMC Bex, an accountant from London, is sent to the beautiful highland hall to sort out the accounts, which have been left in quite the state over the years and more than just completing a job, she learns to love the people, animals and scenery she has been pushed towards.

This was the perfect light romance I had been craving. Duncan sounds like a hottie Scottie, who is also tender and loving, although first impressions left me seeing red flags initially. He isn’t perfect, but neither is Bex and I loved the way their romance was navigated. I really enjoyed Bex’s relationship with the side characters in the book mainly Lorna and Fergus, who I began by not liking at all and by the end had really grown fond of the old man. There was intrigue and drama, humour and romance, if you like your books spicy, I’m afraid you won’t find it here, but I thought it was perfect the way it was. Like many books in this genre it was predictable but in the best ways and I’ve still got some questions and I’m wondering whether this will be a standalone or if we will come back to highland hall again because Kieran was talked about a fair few times, but we never meet him and I just have an inkling that maybe the best story could be about him?! I also want to know more about Fergus, he is such a mixture of sweet and sour and so full of wisdom, I wanted more of him!

I was gutted when the book ended as I really enjoyed it, it’s made me so want to visit Scotland even more than I already did. A great book, with lovely cover art and memorable characters.

Kilts and Kisses at Highland Hall is a sweet romance set in the stunning Scottish castle and surrounding village, which is full of wonderful people. It's a pleasant read that I enjoyed until the last part of the book.

Unfortunately, this book suffers from being marketed as something is it not. It's labelled as enemies to lovers, romantic comedy, brooding hero and straight-laced heroine. Except it's nothing of sort. Duncan isn't brooding at all, Bex is career focused but hardly straight-laced, and they certainly aren't enemies (or rivals or anything of the sort). The story is sweet but funny is it not. While I got over quickly about the book being marketed as something it is not, there's few issues I had with Bex, the main character.

The story has a lot of potential, and a better execution would have made it very good. Unfortunately, Bex is quite judgemental in the beginning and keeps making things difficult for herself. The biggest problem I had is the third act breakup. Without any spoilers, it is entirely manufactured, it felt like manufactured, and could have been resolved with one conversation. Instead of being an adult, Bex completely ignores Duncan even when Duncan did nothing wrong and Bex knew it. I feel like the potential conflict could have been something different, more natural.

Overall, a sweet and cosy romance. I would have given the book four stars if not for the last, heavily manufactured, conflict and third act break-up that ruined the story for me. Particularly when the ending is rushed and some questions are left unanswered.

Kilts and Kisses at Highland Hall
by Hannah Lynn

Rebecca, affectionately known as Bex, is a determined and career-focused accountant based in the bustling city of London. Her meticulous skills are put to the test when she’s dispatched to the scenic landscapes of Scotland to untangle years of disorganised accounts for the notoriously grumpy Laird Fergus, a man whose harsh exterior masks a deeper complexity.

In this charming setting filled with rolling hills and historic castles, Bex finds herself grappling with numbers and navigating the Scottish countryside's rugged charm. As she works alongside Duncan, the dashing groundskeeper with a heart of gold, an undeniable chemistry begins to blossom between them, igniting a slow-burn romance that keeps readers captivated. Sparks fly as their contrasting personalities collide—Bex’s determination and Duncan’s laid-back nature create a delightful tension that evolves beautifully.

However, I found the abrupt ending somewhat unsatisfying. It feels like there’s more to unravel, hinting that this story is just the beginning of a new series that may explore further adventures at Highland Hall and beyond. Having previously read *Forever Love at Wildflower Lock*, the fourth book in the Wildflower Lock Series by this author, I couldn’t help but draw comparisons. The sweet, patient development of Bex and Duncan’s relationship mirrors the enchanting dynamic I enjoyed in Lynn’s prior work. The rich setting and well-crafted characters enrich the narrative, making it a delightful read overall.

How could anyone resist grabbing this gorgeous looking romcom summer read? - I definitely couldn't and what a great quick read it was too!

I love a good romance and this setting was just so perfect for this genre.

City girl Rebecca heads off to crunch the numbers and sort the paperwork for the highland estate, with the promise of promotion when it's sorted.

Groundskeeper Duncan vows to help her get things sorted, but in the meantime, the pair hit it off in a way neither was prepared for.

I am a sucker for a highland setting - especially one in the grounds of a glorious Scottish estate - and it was lovely to see some of the wider community here too.

Having said that, the community were not allowed so keen on seeing the relationship developed and the grumpy Laird certainly tried to put his opinion across.

The descriptive writing had me craving a visit to the Highlands and I was sad when this ended and I had to come back home again!

The characters were a diverse set and I loved seeing these differences enhance the relationship as it developed.

I hadn't realised that this book was actually part of a series and of course, this was my first read - but although I'm sure that there were returning characters from previous books, this being focussed mainly on Bex and Duncan, I felt that this read just fine as a standalone read.

Although we do end on a tiny cliffhanger that makes me curious to read the next book - and to catch up on the rest in the meantime!

A great read that I raced through in no time. Can't wait to catch up with the other characters' stories.

---

This was an entertaining read. I was hooked from the first few pages, an as a fan of anything to do with Scotland, and this book delivered so well. I liked the FMC, although I must admit that her somewhat judgmental personality didn't sit well with me at first, until I saw the change in her. I liked her, and even more so as she gradually became friends with the owner of the castle. I'll say that the romance here was nice but also a little confusing, entertaining too, but as I said, I didn't see much chemistry between the characters until almost the end of the story. Would you call it a slow burn? Let's say yes. In short, it was a good story that entertained me and made me laugh a few times.

📌 I received an e-arc through netgalley, and this is my honest opinion/review of it.

2/5 is generous in my opinion, because I went from being open to indifferent to annoyed to simply mad. It's mislabelled quite miserably, and I'm sore about it.

Let's start this off with simply stating the obvious - this is not enemies-to-lovers. Could someone tell me, at which point were they ever enemies? They're strangers and however much he's a creep to me, he isn't even that in her opinion, so I don't know what's up with that label.

The description also promises that he's brooding and keeping his heart firmly locked away when HE'S LITERALLY THROWING HIMSELF AT HER EVERY TIME HE SEES HER EVEN THOUGH SHE CLEARLY SAYS 'NO, THANK YOU'. God, that pissed me off. I genuinely despise him for that. It's not romantic - it's pushy.

Also - and this is a MAJOR SPOILER - a miscommunication trope as the third act breakup? Are you kidding me? The second she left without talking to him and deleted his message, I wanted to throw my Kindle against a wall. Who does that? I don't want to know or read about people who do that. This is not your toxic ex you're trying to avoid, it's a man you've just fallen in love with, who you know loves you too. Why wouldn't you talk it out? So stupid.

The writing style is fine and I liked the side characters.

In Hannah Lynn’s new cozy romance series, readers follow London accountant Rebecca Barker as she arrives with spreadsheets, strategies, and a plan to get Highland Hall back on track. Unwilling to mix business and pleasure, she has no time for heartbroken and handsome Duncan MacDuffey, the groundskeeper, and the entire village conspires to keep them apart to protect Duncan’s heart. Managing the estate and integrating into the protective local community, Rebecca has a lot to do and romance is not on the list, but she might not be able to strategize her way out of this shot at a happy ending. With great characters and a beautiful Scottish setting, readers will love life in this charming village and estate in the Highlands. Packed with details and fun characters, the atmosphere of this new book and series is cozy, heartwarming, and charming. Rebecca and Duncan are great protagonists with complex backstories, and the ability to shift between their perspectives gives readers glimpses into both sides of this possible relationship. Fun, charming, and entertaining, readers will love this new series -- off to a strong start with this first book -- from Hannah Lynn with her fantastic settings, great atmosphere and emotional storylines, and brilliantly written characters.

This was such a cute read. Rebecca “Bex” is on track for a big promotion at her accounting firm when her boss asks her to take a special assignment. She has to spend the next two months in Scotland to help sort out a client’s account. Determined to prove she deserves the promotion, she sets off. Nothing goes right from the start, but when she arrives, she is shocked to discover she will be working out of a castle. There is even a sweet pup to keep her company.

Duncan is the groundskeeper who is still nursing a broken heart after losing his fiancée. He has been focused on his work and his very demanding cat. When he unexpectedly meets Bex, things are more awkward than either of them expects, but he feels inexplicably drawn to her. As they spend more time together, you cannot help but root for them.

I loved how they got to know each other through little moments and quiet gestures. Duncan was so thoughtful with the surprises he planned for her. The local villagers were the heart of the story. They welcomed her into their community like she had always belonged.

The only thing that threw me off was how slow the burn was, and then once they finally made decisions, it all happened almost too abruptly. I am assuming since this is part of a series we will get more in the next book, and I cannot wait to see where the story goes from here since the ending felt a bit rushed and did not fully resolve everything.

If you are looking for a lighthearted, quick read where strangers fall in love and the locals adopt the newcomer as their own, look no further.

Thank you to NetGalley, Boldwood Books, and Hannah Lynn for allowing me the privilege of reading this story.

Rebecca Barker is ready for a promotion, but she needs to jump one hurdle first. Her boss has sent her to Scotland to help his friend sort out the neglected finances of Highland Hall. While on site, Bex meets the groundskeeper, Duncan MacDuffrey. The attraction between them is undeniable and it isn’t long until something besides friendship is forming between them. Bex’s perfectly laid plan of getting the job done and getting back to London is starting to become harder than she expected with whatever it is forming between her and Duncan. Will she be able to leave Scotland behind or will her pull to Duncan be too much?

When I picked this book up I was in the need for a cute, sweet romance that let me lose myself in it. This was the perfect book for what I needed. I got lost in this world from the beginning and was sad when my time in Scotland was up. Bex and Duncan were perfect together and I loved their chemistry. The side characters were great and I loved how they were woven into the story. The writing and pace of this story kept me engaged the whole time through and I really had a great time reading this. If you are looking for a good Scottish escape with a sweet romance this is a good book to choose.

When London-based accountant Bex Barker is sent to the Scottish Highlands to organize the finances of an aging Laird, she expects to put her head down and work on his books. She doesn’t expect to find Duncan, the charming groundskeeper or to quickly fall into a friend group where she feels like she instantly belongs. But she’s only in town for a short period of time, she’s convinced Duncan is rebounding with her, and her firm has promised her a long-awaited promotion when she returns to London. So what’s a girl to do when suddenly it isn’t quite so clear where home should be?

This was a quick sweet read with a swoony MMC and a dreamy setting. I liked the side characters a lot- especially the pets. However, the book ended really abruptly. I actually kept flipping forward trying to figure out where the end was. I read an advanced copy so maybe it was a mistake. If not, it needs an addition because two big plot points weren’t resolved at all and it literally felt like the book ended in the middle of a chapter. But their relational conflict was resolved and I guess that’s what really matters in a romance.

I received this ARC via NetGalley. It releases June 30, 2025.

ARC REVIEW

Kilts and Kisses at Highland Hall is a sweet, lighthearted closed-door romance.

Accountant Bex is expecting a promotion. Instead, she’s sent to work at a castle in Scotland for 2 months. It’s here that she meets Duncan, the newly single and very handsome groundskeeper.

I liked Duncan and Bex’s dynamic. Their scenes were fun and I like how they built up a good friendship and working relationship too.

I was less sold on the friendships in the book. I found Lorna a bit much, particularly towards the end and felt Bex’s loyalty to her in the beginning was odd given that really didn’t know each other.

Aside from Lorna, the other background characters were great. It was great to read Fergus open up and be a little less grumpy. I also adored the animals!!

Lynn has definitely set up this up to be a series. While I did think there were one or two undercooked or unfinished plots, I’m willing to look past that with the expectation they’ll be addressed in future installments.

Overall, a this was nice light read with minimal drama and a HEA.

Thank you to the Hannah Lynn, Boldwood Books, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an advanced copy of this book.

Rebecca Barker thought she was in line for a big promotion—until her boss sends her off to Scotland to sort out a bookkeeping nightmare for a couple of months. She was expecting a quick work trip... but it just might turn into something more.

This was a cute and easy-to-read story about people trying to safeguard their hearts from further heartbreak. It’s a closed-door romance, perfect for readers who enjoy a clean love story. I actually found that really refreshing—it was still engaging and full of charm, even without the spice.

Now, let’s talk about the “other woman” drama. I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but I’m that weird reader who enjoys it—even with the miscommunication. That element really pulled me in toward the end!

I don’t mind third person POV in books, but sometimes it can make characters feel a little flat. That might’ve been the case here with our main character—there were moments where I wished we got to dig a bit deeper into her emotions. Still, the setting was gorgeous, the pacing was great, and overall it was an enjoyable, heartwarming read.

Thank you NetGalley and Boldwood Books for this the ARC.

Another fabulous book by Hannah Lynn…
Scotland, a castle, 5 dogs and a grouchy lord…. What more could you ask
for when you have to go and work there for two months???
How about a tall, handsome stranger with gorgeous eyes, talk about a welcome distraction 😊
When Bex Barker takes on the task of having to digitalise all the accounts of Highland Hall for work, it means having to relocate and travel the 11 hours up to the castle, when she arrives she is met by 5 lovable dogs who bundle into her with slobbery kisses and a grouchy old man who turns out to be the owner and Lord of the castle itself.
When Bex settles into her new work/home environment she finds herself attracted to one of the staff called Duncan who appears to be reserved but presents himself in a caring manner towards Bex offering to help her with all the paperwork to make her job easier as he knows how things have been run and it seems like Fergus prefers to just put the paperwork in the office and close the door behind him.

How long will Bex need to complete the task, will 2 months be long enough?
