The most epic day of my life got even better when I ran into my brother’s best friend and my first crush, Jack Hale.

He’s still just as charismatic, charming, and larger than life. Those skills come in handy as a sports agent whose biggest client is the country’s most popular football player. When I land a career-changing interview after the big game, our worlds collide in a Vegas bar.

That’s when our meet-cute turns into a celebration.

One night.

One perfect night.

Until the next morning when his famous client turns infamous. A scandal to end all scandals explodes into a media nightmare. And since I’m the new darling of sports broadcasting, our worlds collide again … only this time, not in bed.

Jack needs me, and I can’t say no to Jack in anything. Who would’ve thought that would put a target on my back?

Help from old friends and a secret organization might not be enough this time.

In the end, the only way to survive is to save each other.

Even if it means throwing out the playbook.

The Killers series is one of my favorites from Brynne Asher, with Gifts—Emma’s father Asa's story—being my 2nd favorite. so, I was really excited for this one. sadly, it didn’t quite live up to my expectations.

there wasn't anything wrong with it per se; the writing is solid, it has all the usual BA trademarks of overprotective alpha MMC, sassy FMC, some intriguing drama/ suspense, and great family dynamics, however I found it a bit boring. I personally felt it needed a little more relationship angst, things just seemed to fall into place a bit too easily. especially since there were plenty of situations where a bit of angst could have been injected and it would have really given the book a bit more… I don't know... something. without it I found this couple to be a bit on the dull side.

that said, it was still an enjoyable companion novel, and I’m glad I read it. I’m definitely holding out hope for Saylor and Knox’s full story, especially with that little teaser at the end✌🏻

This was such a fun read! Jack was so entertaining and I loved how obsessed he was with Emma. And Emma grew up to be a pretty cool heroine. To top all that off was how much we got of Asa! Asa is one of my absolute favorites from The Killers series and to see him being Daddy Asa was epic! Loved it!

It was fun, but mainly because of Daddy Asa and the middle-aged badasses. 😂

This is kind of a second chance-ish story, and the MCs have been introduced in Gifts and The Chemistry of Levi. I don’t think readers need to read them first before jumping into this one, but it might help them get a better grasp of who’s who and the dynamics between this group and the side characters mentioned in the story.

In the story, Emma (26), a sideline reporter, had the opportunity to speak with Brett, the quarterback MVP, who is also Jack's (29?) client. After watching the interview, Jack thought it would be a good idea to meet up with her and catch up since it’s been years since they last saw each other. He figured out the hotel she was at and thought he'd swing by. When they finally met, it was like no time had passed, and they just fell right back into that easy friendship they used to have. Then, at the end of the night, they decided to spend it together. 🫣

The next morning, the news was buzzing with stories about how the famous MVP was caught up in a scene with drugs, women, and guns. They painted him in a negative light to ruin his recent success. Jack wasn't about to let any reporters mess things up for his client, and Emma was determined to get this story out there by teaming up with Jack to show what really happened to Brett. Both of them believed he was set up, but they don't have any proof to back that up.

Anyway, this was insta-something at its best, which is a bit strange for me. I understand that they’ve known each other since they were kids, all the way up until Jack and Emma's brother graduated, but it's been years since they last saw each other. Sure, it's nice to see that they feel at ease with one another and that awkward moments are a non-issue for them. But after their one night, it was like Jack had a come-to-Jesus moment and suddenly wanted more time with Emma. He said he wasn't interested in keeping things casual between them, so he kinda bulldozed his way into her life. But still, how he came up with this realization after one night is beyond me. 🤔

This is super steamy, like way more than I’m into. Idk, but it seemed like a lot of what they had was just about the physical stuff. I’m not really buying that they had real feelings for each other. I'm sorry, but it was just unbelievable (atp). 😭

Some of their friends mentioned that the two of them were years in the making, but I honestly don't see it that way. Yes, they kissed for the first time when she was 15, and she had a crush on him. He probably didn't think too much about that kiss, though, since she was the younger sister of his best friend. They were apart for years and have both been living their lives (small mercies; there's no pining). They just reconnected, and all of a sudden, feelings are getting involved? So excuse me if I'm unconvinced when Jack said in one chapter that he thinks he fell in love with her years ago the moment she kissed him; he just didn't know it back then. 🤷‍♀️

I'm not so sure about the romance, but I do like how they interact with each other. Jack was really funny and cocky, sometimes too much for my taste, but I guess he can't help it. And Emma was dedicated to her job and eager to do it. She's honest about what she wants and doesn't mind saying what she thinks. I think they were cool together; I just need more time to be sure that the emotional aspect isn't just on the surface.

Anyway, into the suspense part, Jack and Emma obviously teamed up, but it wasn't something they could pull off alone. Therein enters Daddy Asa and the crew to help sort this case out. 🤭 Eventually, they discovered who was responsible for the frame-up, and everything just fell back into its right place.

Overall, even with my issue above, I really think it's pretty good. Although I wasn't really sold on the romance for the most part, in the end, I found myself believing it because of the epilogue (this is why epilogue is important, imo 😂). Watching them so in love after all these years really made me believe that what they have is genuine and lasting. It's adorable to see how their families are doing in later years. 🤭

Also, I love how the high school gang and the older ones are part of it too. It’s great to see that their bonds and friendships are still as strong as ever. I liked the suspense, and I was glad that no good character ended up dying.

Anyhoo, I've always enjoyed Ms. Asher's writing style as a whole. There's just something about it that had me flipping the pages like crazy and getting so invested in the story. I think this one is actually worth reading. 😄

Book info:
- Romantic suspense
- Brother's best friend/Best friend's younger sister
- Second chance-ish
- Steaaaamy!
- Fast burn
- No cheating, OM/OW, or separation.
- No V (both had been with OP)
- Open door
- HEA (7 years later, married with a son and a baby girl otw)

Notes:
- He was her first kiss.
- Experience: Emma has been in relationships during those years. So there's no pining whatsoever. But with her job as a reporter, she hadn't been with anyone for quite some time. Jack used to have a reputation in high school. The last time he had a girlfriend was in college, but he said that when he started working and was finally able to establish his career, he had been "selective" with women. Do what you want with that info.

Emma & Jack's story is full of banter, adventure, 🌶🔥🌶🔥🌶🔥 & swoon!

I love the way they meet up again & the chemistry between them. Sure, sure, chemistry was Levi & Carissa's thing, but these two have it, too. 😉 Jack has matured into a savy businessman, and his business is sports. Emma doesn't know anything about the sportsball, but has enough chutzpah to make up for any lack of knowledge. 😄 Her charisma with a certain football player has everyone talking.

Don't worry! There's no triangle happening here!

Emma is all about Jack & vice versa. Which is what makes all the tonue-wagging about her & the football player extra amusing bc every time someone mentions it, Jack's possessive side pops up & it's fun. 😁

Anywhoodle! I loved this story lots & seeing our Killers together again - & Jack's intro into their world - made my heart extra happy while reading. I love Emma's tenacity & heart, Jack's sweet & spicy, and the friendship our Homies still possess. Plus, Mason's chickens...

We also get a pretty neat epilogue, & the whole story was one I did NOT want to put down.

😍😍😍

Brynne Asher’s Killers series is probably one of my favourite series of all time, so I was extremely excited to hear about the next gen spin off series. I read Levi’s book a while ago, but I have to say I don’t really remember Jack (H) from that book. Emma (h), Levi’s sister and Asa’s daughter, however, I do remember. She was a little teenage angsty for me, but I liked her enough to know that I would probably like her a lot in her own book. I was less excited to see that the book is brother’s best friend trope, with a long gap in between childhood to the stories events. It’s just not my cup of tea. I avoid tropes like this like the plague to be honest. Alas, I gave it a go and was mostly pleasantly surprised.

This book takes place approximately 10 or 11 years on from the events within Asa and Levi’s books. Now 26yo, Emma is an up and coming journalist who just scored her first break reporting on the NFL Super Bowl, despite knowing nothing about sports at all. When she goes viral for a chemistry filled interview with the star NFL player, her brother’s best friend Jack, said players sports agent, tracks her down for himself. In the years since he’s seen Emma, she’s grown up very well. Way back when, 15 year old Emma had her first kiss with Jack, and now they’re picking back up where they left off.

I really enjoyed this read. It does help that I love all of the side characters already and am always keen to jump back into the Killers world. Emma was a super strong heroine. She’s sweet and funny but she has a strong work ethic and wants to make a name for herself. Jack was great too, maybe a little too cocky for me but I know people often like that in a hero. He was absolutely down bad for Emma very quickly and I loved it. These two had a lot to overcome very quickly, but they did so as a team and that’s all I can really ask for. They did have great chemistry and some very steamy moments too.

I will say that there is a massive exposition dump throughout the first few chapters that really threatened to derail the story for me at first. I actually almost dnf’d because the flow of the story and dialogue felt really unnatural. Adding to this was the constant telling rather than showing. You definitely need to fight through those first couple chapters in order to get to the better part of the story, but once you do you won’t regret it.

Side note; I thought this meant that we would be getting books for all or most of the next gen, but based on the epilogue I’m not sure. I’m praying for Crew, Noah, Ozzy, Bella/Cole and Grady’s kids to get their own stories but who knows. Fingers crossed! 🤞🏼

Safety:
- No virgins.
- H supposedly not a manwhore; called himself “selective” which kind of icked me out.
- h had a few long term relationships in the decade or so between their first kiss and adulthood. She wasn’t really pining for the H which was great.
- No ow or om drama. H is jealous of his player but it’s unfounded and he knows it.

Well, the merry band of middle-aged BAs bring all that you’d expect to see to this one! Trust me, there is zero slowing down for these guys.

Jack and Emma seem to have a chance meeting, but do they really? Because the more they open up and talk, the more it’s clear to me that one of them has been holding a candle for a long time. Like, a very long time. And it’s honestly incredibly sweet and smoking at the same time. It helps that Levi gets some angst also, which is part of what makes me love this author. The family. The friendships. The sibling and friend antics. The loyalty. And the willingness to do whatever it takes based on a gut feeling.

But it’s not just them. Rylan and Brett end up being some excellent people to have around, as well. Even with lies and secrets and mystery and danger piling up all around, they trust that Emma and Jack have their backs. And in turn, they all trust that our original cadre of mysterious protectors have this totally covered.

So come for the humor. Stay for the heat and the love. And be sad when you get to “forever” because now you have to wait for whatever comes next!

Before I even start to talk about our main characters - who I loved by the way - can I just say Daddy Asa

Anywho! On to Jack and Emma, they were equally as swoony as the OG badasses but I never expected anything less from Brynne Asher. She knows how to deliver characters that will make you fall in love with them by the end of the first chapter. And I loved the dynamic of getting to see everyone together, and no not just Daddy Asa (yes he deserves the bold font).

With Jack and Emma not only do we get an intense attraction, we also get some suspense, some drama llama's getting their butts kicked (and rightfully so) and the best ending for this couple. I can't even put into words how much these two made me smile but I'll just say, if I was in public people would have been scared at how often I was smiling to myself.

I'd also say even with so many familiar faces popping up, this book could be read as a standalone. So if you're not already a die hard fan of Brynne Asher like I am, this might be a good book for you to fall in love with her and her characters.

ARC kindly provided in exchange for an honest review.

Brynne’s writing pulls you in from the start. This is a continuation of the Killers series. I absolutely loved the Killers series and this one doesn’t disappoint.

Emma has loved Jack since he was her first kiss at 15 years old. The fact that he is her brother Levi’s best and oldest friend just seems to complicate things. Fast forward
to her adulthood and she’s working to move up the journalism ranks and gets the interview everyone wants after the big game.

Jack represents the Super Bowl MVP and sees Emma’s interview and decides to track her down while they’re both in Vegas. One night leads to their future that he refuses to let her get away from.

Brynne also brings back the OG Killers in this book for yet another level to an already amazing book. You had to know Asa and Grady and especially Crew wouldn’t let someone messing with their family go unanswered. The twists and turns this book takes will keep you guessing till the end.

Excellent read and highly recommend.

Our girl is all grown up & the band is back together again!
As we know from her previous appearances when Emma gets hit by the world it hits her hard, this time she's hitting back hard too.
Jack continues to be an angel in devils clothing, its great to see more of his layers after the impression he gave as Levi's best friend in The Chemistry of Levi, he truly is an onion (but doesn't make you cry, mostly, doesn't smell funny & doesn't have wrinkly skin).
As always its not short on the action and has so many epic one liners that Brynne has floored me with, again as she always does, from all the feels of butterflies to full on eye-popping, no holds barred, shock, and of course plenty of laughter along the way. I'm not sure if shes ready to leave these characters behind, I'm certainly not.

Ever since Levi’s book I have loved Jack. This book just sealed. Jack is the absolute best. I have never laughed so hard at the banter between Jack and Emma. I still love the Homies….Jack and Emma were perfect for each other. This book just sucks you in from the beginning and holds you to the very end. How do her books keep getting better? I highly recommend it.

I really enjoyed this story a lot. Emma and Jack were a lot of fun and there was some action with a bit of danger thrown in. I was familiar with some of the characters having read the first four books in The Killers series. It was nice to see Crew, Grady, and Asa again. I think it would be better to be familiar with that series, as well as Emma’s brother Levi’s book, in order to enjoy this one. There were a lot of references to events in The Chemistry of Levi. For that reason, I would not consider this to be a stand alone.

The thing that drove me nuts, and the reason I’m only giving this 3 stars, was the amount of errors and misuse of words. I used to be a proofreader and these things shouldn’t have made it to the final book. Looking back at my other reviews for this author’s work, I see that she’s still making the same mistakes she was in those books. That’s quite annoying. If this had been more polished, I probably would’ve given it 4.5 stars.

This book was amazing! Once again Brynne Asher hits a home run. There's so much to love, Jack is a sexy, sweet, alpha man who charms both Emma and the readers! Emma has grown into a beautiful, strong woman who found her place in the world despite all the alpha badass men in her life. The banter is off the charts. So many laughs in between the romance and suspense and I was so happy to see what's happened to some of my all time favorite characters from the original Killer series. A must read! Bravo! More of this please!!

Wowwee Jack Hale is all grown up and melting hearts and panties. Now a successful sports agent, he sets his sights on what he wants and doesn’t give up until it’s his, and Emma is firmly in his sights.

Little Emma Hollingsworth has gone from driveby shootings in high school… to driveby shootings in adulthood, seems she just can’t stay away from trouble, but luckily this time she has Jack, Daddy Asa and his band of bad a’s, Addy, Keelie, Saylor and The Homies at her back.

B word colleagues, boss drama, kidnappings on live tv, clearing the name of the wrongly accused and a romance with her brother’s best friend. To say Emma’s life is hectic is an understatement, but Jack has her where he wants her now and no matter what, he’s not letting go.

I absolutely adored this story. Emma and Jack burn up the pages, their inside jokes and secret smiles are everything. Two of my favourite things about The Playbook of Emma (and there are many many more than two) are firstly Jack calling Asa, Daddy Asa, and the man himself and the way he reacts to his daughter’s choice of partner, and secondly Jack finding out that Asa really is as scary as he seems and his threats of bodily harm, aren’t unsubstantiated. The humour in this book was off the charts, which was expected with Jack but it was so much more.

The text conversations, the parents, especially Asa and the unalivers, Jack finally finding out that Asa is as scary as he seems, Levi and Saylor’s reactions and Keelie when Knox brings his girlfriend home and Deep Throat… that one you’ll need to read this fabulous book to find out, (just me with the dirty mind?). This book is packed full of goodness and everything I’ve mentioned here is just a tiny taste. Read The Playbook of Emma, if you need a pick me up, if you want a laugh, if you like a good brothers best friend romance, if you like some action with your romance or just because it’s an amazing book! Highly recommended

Full disclosure, I did a complete reread of the Killers series and Levi’s book (it wasn’t the first time I’ve reread these books and it definitely will not be the last). It wasn’t necessary but it was so good!

Jack is the same Jack from Levi’s book but all grown up. He really is absolutely amazing. Emma grew up into an amazing woman with a kind and sincere soul. I couldn’t love them and their love story more if I tried. I think I fell in love with Jack right alongside Emma!

I could not put this book down. It is intense and fast paced. It’s fun and wild and crazy. The banter is out of this world. The texting is awesome!

The tie back to the Carpino series and even Layla Frost’s Black Resorts series made me so freaking happy! Time for some more rereads! I am just beside myself. I feel like I just spent time with a whole bunch of old friends and I couldn’t be happier about it!

I have to admit, there were a couple times when I had to set the book down because my heart was racing! It was just epic.

Brynne Asher is always a must read for me, but I feel like she really pulled out all the stops for this one. I bow down to the queen!! If I could give it ten stars I would!

Homies for life. 💜

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
🌶️🌶️

When I say I am so honored to have received an ARC from Brynne Asher, it feels like the biggest understatement! I couldn’t be more thrilled with this book. I laughed out loud multiple times and highlighted more than I probably ever have before.

Emma Hollingsworth, girl, I’m so glad to see you thriving! You went through it in high school, but you’ve grown into such a force. I love that she doesn’t shy away from anything. And that little high school crush on Jack (uh, WHO KNEW?!)? It comes back in a big way.

Jack’s big personality rivals Cole Carson’s! Raised by two strong, badass women, Jack is out there taking names and building a bright future. He’s not afraid of hard work, and that absolutely includes earning his place by Emma’s side.

“𝑻𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆’𝒔 𝒔𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒈𝒆𝒕𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒐 𝒌𝒏𝒐𝒘 𝒔𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒐𝒏𝒆 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒂𝒍𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒅𝒚 𝒌𝒏𝒐𝒘 𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕.”

Honestly, need I say more? This quote hit me right in the chest. I love this book with my whole heart. The ‘childhood friends’ trope isn’t always my favorite, but this one was written perfectly. Seeing old friends reconnect, help each other, bond with their kids, and grow together was so, so good. I can’t say enough about this book! 10/10—Brynne will forever be my first recommendation! 🤍

My heart is FULL! The Playbook of Emma by Brynne Asher was a fast past, swoony, and suspenseful ride that I could not stop reading. Emma and Jack’s romance had me hooked right from the start, and I simply couldn’t get enough of their sexy, thrilling romance. I loved Emma’s passion for reporting, love for her family, and long lasting desire for Jack. Jack’s confident charismatic arrogance was dreamy, and I melted over the words of adoration and praise that came out of his mouth all for Emma.(Damn!) You could feel all the pent up longing and tension between these two which created an intimate explosive chemistry that I fawned over. Plus, I lived for all the interactions between Levi along with Daddy Asa and all the Killers fellas. (Give it up for the middle-aged badasses!)

Overall, I LOVED this book. If you are a fan of a suspenseful second gen romance with a hot cocky sports agent, an up and coming reporter, the big football game, spicy Vegas nights, scandal, second chances, dangerous encounters, catching up the killers fellas, Homies group chats, revealing truths, an edge of your seat climax, and a HEA that is simply end game, then you will love Emma and Jack’s story. I always look forward to more from Brynne Asher.

I was absolutely immersed in this book! I loved Jack and couldn’t wait for his story! His chemistry with Emma was off the charts. From the minute these two reconnect, I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough and at the same time I kept telling myself to slow down and savor the moments.
Emma was totally an independent Spitfire and I absolutely loved seeing the growth of her character. I loved all the interactions with not just Jack, but all the characters and let’s face it getting all the killers, including Daddy Asa was just the icing on the cake.
I wish I could give this book more than five stars, absolutely an amazing read.

I loved this! It’s always so fun reading second generation novels and Jack and Emma were no different. Their banter was great and their chemistry was hooot. Plenty of adventure and suspense too. I really liked the sports world this took place in as well, which was a cool change of pace. Jack made me laugh throughout and BA was not kidding when she said he was Cole level cocky. But at the same time he was just so sweet with Emma. As always, we get to see previous couples, including our first gen Killers series faves! Give it up for first gen middle-aged baddies who I will also always love. I thoroughly enjoyed the entire novel and the epilogue gave me all the feels!

I am OBSESSED! Emma and Jack have instant chemistry, and I loved that he was her first kiss. Brother’s best friend meets the danger and action I love in the Killers series. The spice was off the charts and once the two accepted their feelings, there was no stopping them. Definitely one of my new favorites from Brynne Asher!

Brynne Asher has written some of my favorite books, books that I reread often and enjoy just as much as the first time I read them. The Playbook of Emma is another fantastic book that I’ll read again and again.
Jack and Emma’s story was cute, fun, suspenseful, and had the best banter. I was completely invested in them both individually and together from page 1. Their relationship alone was enough to make the story great, but throw in some Killers, Homies, Brett Sullivan and a side of Nebula (from Layla Frost’s Black Resorts world), and it went from great to incredible!

I’ve read a lot of Brynne Asher’s work and have enjoyed it. Unfortunately the Playbook of Emma is a huge miss for me. The balance between the seriousness of the mystery and danger facing Jack, his client Brett, and Emma is not in synch at all with the lightness of Jack and Emma’s relationship with each other and their other friends and family. I just can’t buy into a drive by shooting followed by fooling around on the family couch. They behave like giddy teens while at the same time having their lives threatened. I started skimming when Jack took his grandmother to the dollar store. What was the point of any of that? It fell into the realm of trying too hard to be funny and cute which lost the tension of the mystery. I’ll read the next book Brynne Asher puts out. Her Killers and Agents series are proof that she’s got the goods. This was just… bad.

The Killers Next Generation!!
Don't let the cover deceive you. This one is filled with action and just like any Killers story lots of hilarious one liners. Protective found family and crazy character interaction.

Emma and Jack have know each other forever. Its there time to shine and along the way danger creeps around every corner.

“You’re Emerson Hollingsworth. You are not a one-night stand. You’re a ———- prize. I do not take that lightly.”

You really don't want to miss this one.

I absolutely could not wait to read this book. I was so excited to see Jack and Emma’s characters get together!! Such a great book. It was well written and loved getting to reconnect with characters from the other books. I already want to read it again. This book can be read as a stand alone but I connected to the Killers series and The Chemistry of Levi. All are great books!
