Knights of Malsdon is a fast, action-driven fantasy set in a vivid kingdom nearing war. Xavier Leo’s journey tests his bravery and loyalty, supported by strong world-building and a lively cast. The political focus can slow the pace, and a few characters feel predictable, especially with familiar tropes and Rivers’ constant attitude.

Still, it’s an exciting, immersive read with great battles and memorable touches!
I did enjoy it, 3.5⭐️

Step into the mystical land of Malsdon, where ancient magic flows through the very essence of its people and lands.Xavier Leo, a young knight, embarks on a perilous quest alongside his fellow warriors to protect their homeland from looming darkness. As the island’s diverse regions—Iron Coast, Vermillion Sands, Silver Hills, Emerald Meadows—each hold their own secrets and power struggles, Xavier must navigate treacherous landscapes and formidable foes. The remnants of the war against the mages still haunt Malsdon, casting long shadows over its present. Will Xavier and his comrades rise above the trials, or will the forces of malevolence consume everything they hold dear?

What makes Knights of Malsdon truly stand out is its richly detailed world-building. From the rain-drenched Iron Coast to the shimmering Silver Hills, each setting is vividly brought to life, making the island feel like a living, breathing entity. The balance of politics, power, and magic is masterfully woven into the plot, with noble houses vying for dominance while the magic-infused land fuels both hope and fear. N.K. Nash’s writing captures the grandeur of epic fantasy while keeping the story grounded in deeply personal stakes—Xavier’s journey isn’t just about war; it’s about legacy, loyalty, and the cost of heroism.

The characters shine just as brilliantly as the world they inhabit. Xavier is a brave yet vulnerable hero, making his journey deeply compelling. His relationships with fellow knights and the noble houses add layers of intrigue, while the influence of magic shapes every encounter. With intense battles, fragile alliances, and looming threats, the story keeps you hooked from start to finish.

If you love epic fantasy filled with action and rich storytelling, Knights of Malsdon is a must-read. It’s a tale of adventure, honor, and magic that will keep you turning pages. Will Xavier and his knights save Malsdon, or will darkness prevail? Dive in to find out!

N.K. Nash’s Knights of Malsdon is a wonderful piece of fantasy storytelling, but what truly stole my heart was the profound bond between the characters and their animal companions. As an animal lover, I was mesmerised by the gigas lions—noble, intelligent creatures that weren’t just pets or battle mounts, but loyal friends with their own souls and personalities. Xavier’s connection with Saya and Jupiter is breathtaking, filled with unspoken trust, love, and mutual respect. The moment they fight alongside him, their presence roaring through the pages, is utterly exhilarating.

Beyond the action and political intrigue, it’s these emotional connections that make the story unforgettable. The loss of a beloved gigas animal is felt as deeply as any human tragedy, a reminder of how powerful and irreplaceable the bond between human and an animal can be. Nash writes with such heart, making every interaction between friends, family, gigas beasts and even the enemies pulse with life. I laughed, I cried, and I felt my heart swell with joy and sorrow alike. This is more than just a fantasy novel—it’s a love letter to the animals who stand by us, in fiction and in life. An absolute must-read.

Knights of Malsdon is a fast-paced, action-driven fantasy novel set in a richly imagined kingdom on the absolute cusp of war.

Nash has written young Xavier Leo, a knight drawn into a conflict from the minute the story starts that tests his courage, loyalty, and leadership. The world-building is vividly amazing, complete with a map to illustrate it further with distinct regions, magical relics, and deep-rooted rivalries that bring the setting to life.
The story itself is engaging from the start, filled with battles, it does drop off for me personally due to the big focus on political tension and alliances (which also gives a view into what the world is actually like), and a strong sense of camaraderie among the knights. Nash’s writing balances the action and emotional depth well, due to some big story pionts that occur l, as well as the inclusion of actual capable female warriors and leaders gives the cast a refreshing but also predictable edge.

That said, a few characters do fall into familiar or exaggerated fantasy tropes, which can make them feel predictable at times. I could sene where the story was going the minute the Graw brothers were introduced as well as Rivers’ attitude(I get she's a female knight but the constant hard bickering attitude got tiring quickly) It doesn’t take away from the enjoyment, but it’s something readers might notice as the story unfolds.

Overall Knights of Malsdon is a super clcompelling read for anyone who enjoys epic fantasy with a modern flair—especially those of us who appreciate immersive world-building and high-stakes adventure, I personally loved the addition of the gigas animals (Saya and Jupiter woop woop!), I would love this to be explored more in book 2 (maybe they are tied to a magic source like Matriarch Delilah?)

All in all, a solid 6/10 read, I'd definitely read again (and I will) and can not wait for book 2!

N.K. Nash delivers a gripping fantasy adventure in Knights of Malsdon, blending political intrigue, magic, and deep character-driven storytelling. The world is richly detailed, and the tension between duty and desire adds an emotional depth that kept me invested. The female characters, particularly River, Isabella and Liliana, are strong and compelling, though I wished for more focus on their perspectives. The pacing occasionally slows with political manoeuvring, but the action and emotional stakes make up for it. With its captivating world and layered characters, this is a must-read for fantasy lovers. I, eagerly awaiting book two!

description

What a truly wild ride this was!

From the very first few pages of the book, you will witness deadly battles, raging magic, and conspiracies that will make you wide-eyed and pumped full of adrenaline. I suggest you keep your shield and sword nearby just in case you also have to fight when the horns of battle sound, because it gets pretty rough in there real quick!

One of the many things I liked about this book is how fast-paced it is; it’s literally a page-turner.

I’m not much of a fan of the slow pacing that seems to be the norm for many epic fantasy and high fantasy series, so I was pleasantly surprised that Knights of Malsdon didn’t hold back on the plot in favor of complex world-building.

I also appreciated the powerful characters in the book, specifically Xavier and his Gigas lions.

I especially liked how wars don’t overwhelm Nash’s female characters – they expertly take on leadership roles for entire armies, fight for Malsdon, and give a very hard time to others. I loved all of that.

Especially River Silverlight. When she charges in with all her silver-hair glory and her battalion of archers, you’re sure that the enemy holds no chance against her.

I have my purpose, and each of you must find yours and fight for it with all your heart!

Moreover, there’s a fair bit of everything in the book – wars and politics, magic and swordsmanship, family and love – but it’s also very gritty and deals with the theme of war realistically.

On the contrary, I was a little dismayed by the fact that many characters follow the typical archetypes of the hero, the villain, and the supporting, and even get similar fates. I would have loved to see conflicting ideologies among characters of a similar moral standing.

Anyhow, it still felt refreshing to witness the good vs evil magical wars, thanks to the loveable characters.

The author has a great writing style. He cuts straight to the point and uses minimum fluff, sometimes focusing on the introspective as well as the sensory details.

The longer we stay here, the more I use my powers, the more I feel myself turning into the very thing I have to destroy. I feel so lost. I can’t recall the sight of the emerald-green grass of the Meadows nor the sound of the forest as it awakes with the sunrise.

For fans of the wars in Game of Thrones and The Stormlight Archive, Knights of Malsdon is a raging whirlwind of battle strategies, political scheming, and epic character-building. Not meant for the light-hearted, this soon-to-be epic fantasy series is one of its own kind in the genre of military fantasy.

A Knightly Adventure You Won’t Want to Put Down!

The character development is beautifully written. Xavier and the main cast are fleshed out perfectly, and even the side characters get their moments to shine. And the emotional scenes? They hit hard!

Fans of epic fantasy will definitely not be disappointed with this debut novel from N. K. Nash! For me this was a 4 star read and well deserved.

Flat and unbelievable characters that we are given no reason to care about. Rather than character development characters repeatedly just become evil. Dull and uninteresting. Decades pass but characters stay the same without aging or changing.

A Masterful Tale of Honour, Betrayal, and War (5 Stars)

N.K. Nash delivers a gripping and immersive fantasy epic in Knights of Malsdon, a novel that blends political intrigue, emotional character arcs, and intense action into a truly compelling story. From the very first chapter, the world of Malsdon feels alive, filled with noble houses vying for power, a history shaped by war, and characters struggling between duty and desire. What makes this book stand out is how effortlessly it balances the weight of grand conflicts with deeply personal stakes, making every battle—whether fought with swords or words—matter.

The story follows Xavier Leo, heir to the noble House of Leo, as he steps into the harsh realities of leadership, war, and political deception. At first, he is full of potential but untested, a young man living with his father, the legendary Lord Darius Leo. But fate does not allow him the luxury of inexperience for long. When Xavier is tasked with leading his first real mission to Alice Island, what begins as a simple scouting mission quickly turns into a life-altering battle, testing his courage and forcing him to make decisions that will shape his future. The battle sequences are intense and well-written, capturing not just the brutality of combat but the mental toll it takes on those who fight.

Beyond the battlefield, the political tensions in Malsdon add a thrilling layer to the story. The kingdom is teetering on the edge of chaos, with the power-hungry Graw brothers, Ginn and Gavel, manipulating their way into favour while plotting in the shadows. The fragile alliances that hold the realm together are under constant threat, and Xavier quickly realises that wars are fought in courts just as much as on the battlefield. At the same time, his personal life is no less complicated. His love for Princess Isabella and her love for him is sincere, yet impossible, as he is bound by duty to marry her younger sister, Arabella—a woman whose ambition and pride make her both fascinating and dangerous. This love triangle never feels forced or melodramatic but instead adds emotional depth to Xavier’s struggles, making him feel all the more real.

Darius Leo, however, remains the towering figure in the novel, both in presence and influence. A war hero and a man of unshakable honour, he commands respect from all who know him, including King Theo, who sees him as a brother, and Sol Silverlight, the lord of the Silver Hills and dearest friend. His reputation alone holds weight in every political decision and military conflict, yet he is more than just a revered warrior—he is a father first. His relationship with Xavier is pure and life like, with natural tension and love as he pushes his son toward greatness while ensuring he does not lose himself along the way. There’s a sense of warmth beneath Darius’ disciplined exterior, a love that is never explicitly spoken but always felt.

The writing is fluid and engaging, balancing rich descriptions with fast-paced action. Malsdon itself is beautifully developed, from the lush Emerald Meadows to the rain-soaked Iron Coast and the mountains made of silver in the Silver Hills each region feeling distinct and alive. The dialogue is sharp and natural, with moments of humour that lighten the tension, particularly in the camaraderie between Xavier and his friends. The battle scenes are written with precision, never overcomplicating the action but always making it visceral and gripping.

There is a strong emotional core running through Knights of Malsdon. Themes of honour, sacrifice, and the burden of legacy are woven into every chapter. Xavier’s journey is not just about proving himself in battle but about finding his own path, while staying pure of heart. At the same time, the novel does not shy away from the darker side of power—betrayal lurks at every corner, and trust is a rare commodity. The tension builds steadily throughout the book, culminating in a climax that leaves the reader eager for more.

What makes Knights of Malsdon truly exceptional is how every character, even the antagonists, feel fully realised. The Graw brothers are not just villains for the sake of it—they are dangerous because they understand how to manipulate those around them. Arabella, despite her flaws, is not purely one-dimensional but rather a product of her own ambitions and circumstances. Even minor characters, like River Silverlight and Captain Artemis, bring life to the story, adding layers of loyalty, friendship, and conflict.

By the end of the novel, Xavier is no longer just a noble’s son—he is a leader, a warrior, and a man forced to navigate a world where honour and survival do not always align. His transformation is one of the most rewarding aspects of the book, and his final moments leave a lasting impact.

With its perfect blend of action, political drama, and emotional depth, Knights of Malsdon is a must-read for any fantasy fan. It captures the essence of what makes the genre great—rich storytelling, compelling characters, and a world that feels as real as the people in it. A fantastic debut!

Knights of Malsdon by N.K. Nash is a thrilling and masterfully crafted work of fantasy fiction that captivates from the first page to the last. Set in a richly imagined world, this book brings to life a kingdom on the brink of war, where ancient traditions, political intrigue, and an extraordinary cast of characters collide in unexpected and powerful ways.

The world-building in Knights of Malsdon is exceptional. Nash expertly introduces readers to the realm of Malsdon, blending history, mysticism, and a rich lore that feels as real as any historical period. The setting itself is almost a character, with its sweeping landscapes, majestic castles, and dark forests, which feel as alive as the people who inhabit it.

The characters are where this novel truly shines. The protagonist, a young but determined knight, is given a depth and complexity that keeps you invested in their journey. They are not mere pawns in a larger political game; they are individuals with dreams, fears, and moral dilemmas that make them incredibly relatable. Nash’s ability to weave personal growth into the epic scale of the story creates a character-driven narrative that doesn’t rely solely on battles or external conflicts but on the internal struggles of those involved.

The pacing is another standout feature. Nash strikes the perfect balance between fast-paced action sequences and moments of quiet introspection, giving readers the chance to connect with the characters and their world while still delivering the thrills and excitement of a true epic fantasy. The plot itself is filled with twists and turns, political maneuvering, and enough emotional weight to make every decision feel consequential.

The writing style is fluid and immersive, with a richness that invites you to savor every sentence. There’s an elegance to Nash’s prose that enhances the grandeur of the story without ever becoming overwhelming or inaccessible. The dialogue is sharp and engaging, full of wit and wisdom, and the action scenes are described with such vivid detail that you can practically hear the clash of swords and feel the tension of each battle.

In conclusion, Knights of Malsdon is a triumph of fantasy storytelling. It combines the best elements of classic high fantasy—knights, kingdoms, and quests—with a modern sensibility that makes it fresh and exciting. N.K. Nash has created a world that is as immersive as it is compelling, filled with characters you will care deeply about and a story you won’t want to put down. This book is a must-read for any fan of epic fantasy and a shining example of the genre at its finest.

Reading Knights of Malsdon felt like stepping into another world. From the very first page, I was drawn into Xavier Leo’s journey. He’s a young knight, brave yet unsure at times, and that made him feel real to me. I could connect with his doubts, his choices, and the way he carries the responsibility of protecting his land. There were moments I stopped reading just to think about my own journey in life—how we all face challenges and push forward even when we’re scared. Xavier’s story reminded me that strength isn’t about being perfect, it’s about not giving up.

The world in this book is magical and full of life. Every place, from the rainy Iron Coast to the peaceful Emerald Meadows, felt so detailed that I could see it clearly in my mind. What I liked most was how magic was part of the land itself—it wasn’t just something characters used, it was part of their history, their identity. The story has a mix of adventure, danger, and emotion, and I liked how it wasn’t just about fighting battles, but about facing fears and building trust.

The writing is smooth and easy to follow. It’s not too complicated, which I really liked. It made the story enjoyable and helped me stay connected with the characters. Xavier’s friendships and the people he meets along the way all felt natural. There are moments of action, but also quiet scenes that show what’s really in people’s hearts. I found myself caring about the characters, hoping they would make it through, and that’s what made the story special to me.

I would recommend Knights of Malsdon to anyone who enjoys fantasy with a heart. It’s not just about knights and magic—it’s about courage, loyalty, and finding your place in a world that’s changing. This book made me feel a lot, and even after finishing it, parts of it stayed with me. If you want a story that takes you on an adventure but also touches your heart, give this one a try.

I don't usually read as much of the 'classical' type of epic fantasy, but the premise of this book sounded interesting so I picked it up. Knights of Malsdon for sure took me on a deep, immersive and action-filled journey which was full of battles, political intrigue, magic and vivid world-building.

As with most epic fantasy, I found I had to concentrate a lot due to the vast cast and complex storyline. I enjoyed how this story stretched across several generations. The lengthy timeline allowed us as readers to experience the growth of each character through the years as they aged. The battle scenes were incredibly riveting, and it almost felt like I was there within the story itself. The plot took some interesting turns, some of which took me by surprise, which made the book even more exciting. Knights of Malsdon does not shy away from violence, and some scenes I found rather gory, but this added to the richness of the story, making the scenes memorable and impactful.

A small quip though was that I felt like there was more telling than showing at times along with some info dumping, but it is understandably so for a book with so much political intrigue and a complex magical system. At times I also hoped for a slightly deeper complexity in the characters, as I found the good were very good and the evil were very evil. It would have been nice to have more layers to the characters' personalities, but that might be just me, as I enjoy reading complex unpredictable characters who have twisted motives behind their actions.

Something else I really enjoyed was how strong the female characters were. I think River and Liliana probably stood out the most to me. Some of the scenes were quite emotional as well! Overall, I found Knights of Malsdon to be a very exciting read, and a strong debut. I can't wait to see in which direction the story will take us next.

I really enjoyed reading Knights of Malsdon. This is a solid debut by N.K Nash, his writing style is fast-paced, cinematic and very character-driven which I really liked, I was able to picture various scenes like it was a film, from the green forests of the Emerald Meadows to the barren and beaten plains of the Forgotten Lands.

The characters are very well written, likeable and relatable, even the villains in this story are straight evil not morally grey, they’ve even fallen from grace so to speak or have allowed their ambitions to twist their morale compass. One small thing which could be improved is more character descriptions of some of the minor characters.

Now the character I loved the most, River Silverlight. This character is a image of a strong and true to herself woman. She doesn’t let anyone bully her or push her off of what she believes in, along with the fact she commands her own troops and more. Which wasn’t very popular in medieval times and was a great thing that Nash put in his book, women that are capable of fighting, showing love and not scared to die for it.

Additionally, there is a bit of everything in the book from wars and politics, magic and sword play, family and love. But it’s also deals with the themes of war realistically.

Here are some of my favourite quotes:

‘What everyone will be fighting for up until the end of time, my dear.’

‘They died protecting their children, like any parent would.’

‘Don’t let your pride and your honour blind you,’

For fans of Game of Thrones and Arthurian legends, Knights of Malsdon is a great world of battle strategies, political scheming, and epic character-building.

A Masterfully Written Fantasy Epic

N.K. Nash’s Knights of Malsdon stands out not only for its gripping plot and well-developed characters but also for its writing style, which brings the world of Malsdon to life with remarkable depth and clarity. The prose strikes the perfect balance between immersive descriptions and fast-paced storytelling, ensuring that readers remain engaged without feeling overwhelmed by excessive detail.

The world-building. Every setting—from the lush Emerald Meadows to the stormy Iron Coast and the grand halls of the palace—is described with just the right amount of vivid imagery, making the world feel tangible and lived-in. Instead of relying on long-winded exposition, the history and politics of Malsdon unfold naturally through dialogue and action, allowing the reader to absorb the intricacies of the kingdom without slowing the story’s momentum.

The dialogue is sharp, authentic, and full of personality. Each character has a distinct voice, from the commanding presence of Darius Leo to the wit and fire of River Silverlight. Conversations feel natural, sometimes playful, sometimes tense, but always purposeful in developing relationships and advancing the plot. The banter between characters, adds warmth and humour, making the emotional moments rewarding.

Action sequences are another highlight of Nash’s writing. The battle scenes are cinematic yet easy to follow, with a strong sense of movement, tension, and stakes. Every swing of a sword, every strategic decision, and every moment of chaos is crafted to draw the reader in, making the battles feel both thrilling and meaningful.

With its fluid prose, gripping pacing, and emotional weight, Knights of Malsdon was a great read.

Reading Knights of Malsdon by N.K. Nash was an experience I didn’t know I was missing until I picked it up. What struck me immediately was how naturally the story pulled me in—there was no slow build, no waiting for excitement—it was alive from the very first chapter. I loved how Nash crafted a world that feels ancient yet new, where magic is not just a force but a living memory woven into every stone and every sword. The pacing was perfect; every chapter made me want to read “just one more” until suddenly, hours had passed.

What truly made me connect with this book was Xavier Leo himself. I loved his honesty, his flaws, and the way he doubts himself while still choosing to move forward. It made his victories feel hard-earned and real. His friendships, especially, felt beautifully authentic—raw in moments of fear, warm in moments of trust. The emotional depth surprised me the most; it’s not just an epic adventure, but a human one, filled with choices that matter.

The world-building deserves special mention. The places felt so vivid I could almost hear the Iron Coast’s waves and smell the rain over Emerald Meadows. Nash doesn’t just tell you about his world—he makes you live in it, and that’s rare.

I honestly loved this book more than I expected. Knights of Malsdon isn’t just a fantasy story—it’s a reminder of why we read fantasy in the first place: to feel wonder, courage, and hope again.

At the heart of Knights of Malsdon lies the powerful dynamic between Darius and Xavier Leo, a father and son bound by duty, honour, and the weight of expectation. Their journey—from the comforts of the Emerald Meadows to the battlefield and political intrigue—forms the emotional and narrative core of the novel.

Darius is a man of legendary status, admired by allies and feared by enemies. He commands the respect of King Theo, who treats him as a brother rather than a subject, and is trusted implicitly by Sol Silverlight, the kingdom’s most skilled craftsman. His reputation as a warrior and leader extends beyond words; his very presence demands authority. Even his adversaries, like Ginn and Gavel Graw, recognise his strength.

Meanwhile, Xavier begins his journey in his father’s shadow. Though he starts as a confident yet untested noble, his first real challenge—leading men into battle on Alice Island—forces him to grow. He earns the respect of his fellow knights, and figures like Captain Artemis and River Silverlight come to see him as more than just a lord’s son. His ability to make difficult choices and command in the face of danger showcases his transformation into a leader.

By the end, both have solidified their roles—Darius as an unwavering pillar of strength and support. With Xavier as a worthy leader and protector of the realm. Their journey, along with others they share it with makes Knights of Malsdon a compelling and emotional tale.

Knights of Malsdon is more than just an epic fantasy—it’s a deeply emotional story of loyalty, love, and the relationships that define us. While the world-building and action are great, what truly captivated me was the beautifully crafted character dynamics, especially the father-son bond between Xavier and Darius. Their relationship is filled with warmth, respect, and quiet strength. Darius isn’t just a leader—he’s a father who carries the weight of both duty and love, shaping Xavier into the man he’s destined to become. Their moments together, whether through training, quiet conversations, or shared battles, are some of the most moving parts of the book.

The other relationships are just as compelling—Xavier’s connection with Isabella is starts in bittersweet and tender way then builds into something much more, while his dynamic with River is built on camaraderie and mutual respect. Each interaction feels authentic, layered with history and emotion, making the stakes feel all the more real. Nash has a gift for writing relationships that feel lived-in, full of unspoken words and undeniable depth. This is a story that doesn’t just make you care about the fate of a kingdom—it makes you care about the people in it. A stunning, heartfelt read.

N.K. Nash’s Knights of Malsdon is a thrilling fantasy filled with political intrigue, battle, and complex relationships. The story unfolds steadily, balancing action with emotional depth. The relationship between Xavier and his father, Darius, is a strong element, grounding the high-stakes conflicts with moments of warmth and wisdom. Xavier’s journey from noble heir to warrior is compelling, though at times, the pacing slows due to political manoeuvring.

The world-building is immersive, with the island of Malsdon feeling rich and lived-in, but the real strength lies in the character relationships. Xavier’s bond with Isabella is beautiful, and his friendship with River adds charm and humour. The gigas lions bring a unique, almost spiritual connection to the story, adding another layer of emotional investment. While some sections feel drawn out, the payoff is worth it. A strong start to what could be a promising series.

Knights of Malsdon is a fantastic and easy read. What I loved most were the relationships between the characters, especially Xavier and his father, and Xavier and Isabella. The themes of loyalty and friendship really shine through and give the story a lot of heart.

The fight scenes aren’t overdone, but there’s just enough detail to let you picture the action without it dragging on. The villains are properly nasty, doing some truly awful things that make you hate them even more.

The character development is solid for the main characters, and even a few of the side characters get their moments to stand out. The emotional scenes are where the book hits good. They’re written well and with care, you can feel the characters’ struggles and joys—some of those moments genuinely stayed with me after I finished reading them.

Knights of Malsdon by N.K Nash took me by surprise! I have read a lot of fantasy books in the past and I can only name a few which have pulled me in fast like this from the start. I started the first couple of chapters of this book thinking I’d read only a few chapters a day, I was honestly surprised as I ended up reading almost half of it in the first day. Two days later and I finished it, and it had left me wanting more.

The writting is consistent, the style is gorgeous, and the story itself will have you guessing every move. The main character, Xavier Leo, and the other cast of characters are fantastically realised and complex. The world is a breath of fresh air in this genre.

Overall, Knights of Malsdon is a very strong debut from this author and I am keen to see more like this from him. If you like the fantasy genre, then pick this book up!

Thank you to the author for my copy of this book, here is my honest review. This was a 3.5 for me.

This was an epic fantasy, the world was large but not too overly complicated as some can be. The characters were driven by their desire to do good and right by the land they lived in. I would have liked a little more background into why the first war with the mages began but that's just a side note for me.

I loved the aspect of the gigas creatures and how they interacted throughout the book with the main characters and how they bolstered the confidence of the soldiers when in battle.

The moral dilemmas were an interesting angle and were thought provoking.
