My fate is in the dark, And my shadow there is real…
The darkness likes to play in this world.
It also likes to deceive.
In the Enchanted Forest, secrets thrive and one girl desperately needs to find answers before it’s too late.
That girl is Corvina Charles, a powerful Shadowborn—a human who touched dark magic and became something else.
Something dangerous.
At the age of eighteen, Corvina and her best friend are swept away to the Shadowborn Academy, the one place where magic and darkness coincide.
It’s also where pupils go missing, teachers don’t play by any rules, the therapist is hot, and boys with dark magic love to seduce your soul.
With death becoming a game at the academy that not even the Dark or Light Fae seem capable of winning, my love life should really be the last thing on my mind…especially when one of the boys just so happens to be my teacher!
Shadowborn Academy is a Dark Reverse Harem Paranormal Fae Romance for 18+. In this world, not even the shadows can be trusted…
G. Bailey is a USA Today bestselling author of books that are filled with everything from dragons to pirates. Plus, fantasy worlds and breath-taking adventures. Oh, and some swoon-worthy men that no girl could forget. G. Bailey is from the very rainy U.K. where she lives with her husband, two children and three cheeky dogs.
I don't think I've ever started a book written by G. Bailey and been disappointed by anything in it. Shadowborn Academy was no exception. Definitely enjoy this from the beginning to end. Corvina's character was completely interesting but she wasn't the only one. Heck, even this whole world was interesting.
Not surprising that she starts meeting her little harem once she goes to school. It also didn't hurt that all of them were completely yummy and head over heels interested in her. Ugh, so adorable. The only thing I can and will complain about is that damn ending. I HATE CLIFHANGERS!
Ugh, I need to know more and I want book two ASAP!
AHHHH! I usually don’t DNF books, and if I do I typically don’t leave reviews, but when I saw this book had an average 4 star rating, I thought I should at least say my peace.
Honestly, it’s my fault for not enjoying this one. It’s a reverse harem paranormal romance, but I got WAAAAY too excited when I saw that it was about “Shadowborns” and I thought it would be a whole lot darker than it was.
The story starts with a young Corvina getting tricked by a faerie into jumping into a well where she *mostly* dies and is reborn as a Shadowborn. <—- FANTASTIC START!
But where the story loses me is when we fast forward some odd years to Corvina having already accepted her new Shadowborn identity and is now preparing to go to the Shadowborn Academy to learn about her magics.
I’m sorry, what was she doing all this time then?
For me, THAT was where the story lay: her coming to terms with her magic, meeting her new bestie, and learning to love her “inner demon” who is actually some kind of sexy shadow faerie that bound himself to her when they were both on the brink of death. AGAIN, could’ve been an AWESOME story, but it’s like the authors skipped all the cool stuff.
All that being said, I’m sure this book would appeal to lots of folks. But if you enjoy dark plots, with complex characters, and rhythmic prose (that’s been edited), I wouldn’t recommend this one.
In our series of "Hit and Miss, the Academy Sagas", this was a definite miss.
I love G. Bailey, but this book wasn't as polished and as well written as it could have been.
I'll keep this short. No spoilers. The "misses" in this book were:
- Weird/Boring world building: Mostly, the places/buildings seemed very 'fantastical' and sometimes just like every other academy book. But there was a loooot of descriptive writing, and it got boring at times. And there were several loooong-winded info dumps about things that possibly aren't and won't be important.
- Inconsistencies: Secrets (and secret talents) that were meant to be secrets were suddenly openly spoken about, and at least two people hung out at Zander's place on Fridays, but were unaware of the other people's hangouts. Also, the time-skips were too fast, and because of them...
- Underdeveloped relationships and characters: I have no clue who is really into whom, and what type of people they really are. For a while, I confused Gage with Gale (ugh, similar names push my dyslexia into overdrive), and I still have no idea who Ronan is, but apparently I should have cared..?
- Somewhat pointless plot, or plots: If you asked me to sum up the plot of the book, I couldn't do it, because there were too damn many side plot lines, and there really wasn't even truly a single underlying plot (merely one plot line was what caused the end climax thingy, and meh, even that was boring). I found myself asking what the true meaning of the book was supposed to be - as in, what was the story it wanted to tell?
- The RH romance: Just bleh. For about uhhh half(?) of the book I didn't know who the FMC will fall for, apart from all of the hot guys that she kept drooling over, and then the ones that she actually liked, well, they were all just very bleh.
Of course pairing up these two authors, you are guaranteed a hit!!! I enjoy each author separately, so when I found out that they are collaborating again I was very happy. The Dark Fae Academy is promising to become a favorite with me.
In Shadowborn Academy we have Corvina, who is a shadowborn. Usually becoming a Shadowborn is extremely not fun, to die horribly. Sent to the academy to learn how to unlock her magic, but at least she is not going alone. Her best friend gets to come along. Who do you trust when danger is all around, anything can and will kill you.
Guys this was just freaking awesome, I cannot go into to much detail, but I can only suggest that if you like these authors. You like a good, well written story, give Shadowborn Academy a try. I promise you will like it. I know I need book two asap!!!
I feel like a lot of stuff happened for the sake of the girl to have multiple love interests. Most of the guys she made out with were completely unprovoked and made no sense.
The writing was kinda alright, sometimes though I wasn't completely convinced about it.
I... Don't know. It wasn't the best. Probably won't continue the series
Well. That was awful. I kept getting the characters confused. Grammar was appalling throughout, and the story line was obvious, basic and boring. Disappointed that I actually waited for this to come out. It's also like young adult with a single sexual situation that doesn't go anywhere and a lot of swearing. Originally the impression I got was that it wasn't YA and it was an adult book. So yes as I said boring.
This Fae fantasy story was interesting but not well written. I kept running into things that made no sense and usually in stories like this the answer to all the unexplainable is always magic but that excuse didn't quite cut it this time.
I'm not going to use spoiler tags because everything I'm about to mention is written within the first 2 chapters of the book...
We start out story learning about the Shadowborn which to my understanding (the rules on this change throughout the book) are humans who get turned into a type of Fae and when they get turned, they basically die and get reborn. So, the Fae community removes these humans turned Shadowborn children from their human homes and puts them in an orphanage for Shadowborn. This was confusing for a lot of reasons. What happens to the children's family's, are they led to believe their child died? Why are you hiding all these Shadowborn children on the human plane? How exactly does becoming a Shadowborn work, because the rules changed later on in the story. Now the FMC lives in one of these orphanages in the human realm and for the life of me I couldn't guess what era of humanity they were living in; no modern technology was mentioned. They even used magic torches instead of flashlights and traveled to the Academy in a horse-drawn carriage. So, no hints there. There was mention of an ensuite bathroom but that could have worked on the magic rule. It wasn't until over halfway through the book when Netflix was randomly mentioned that I finally knew it took place in modern times.
About the FMC, she's supposed to be college age but acts like a moody pre-teen with a bit of a death fascination. She also mentions not liking characteristics in people that she displays herself.
Then there's the poorly executed writing style where chapters started with "A month has passed and here's how relationships have been developing" or "It's been Two Months since the events of the last chapter". This type of time elapse can work well after a major event or at the start of a new book in a series but when you have to keep starting chapters where months have passed and nothing of interest happened you have a problem with the natural flow of the storyline.
What I did like, one of the MMC's has a Ghost Boy thing going for him. He's not an actual ghost more like Fae turned Shadow that stalks our FMC but I really enjoyed reading the character development between those two and it was one of the major highlights of the story for me. The story is interesting and has mystery plot lines and I can tell there's going to be some court intrigue in future books and typically it's the kind of high fantasy read I would love, but it's not interesting enough to make me want to keep reading the rest of the series especially when I only love one character and it's not the FMC.
DNF 31% I wanted to like this book and I think under normal circumstances I probably would have. I just think that the timing wasn’t right for me to read this. I was struggling to understand things as I felt like a bunch of the characters and the plot lines were being thrown together at once. I might I try to come back to this later and I’ll hopefully like it more
This book made 0 fucking sense. They go to the academy after they turn 18? Where they wear sexy uniforms? And all hook up with teachers? And what are they trying out for? But also this book couldn’t pick a fantasy/magical realism direction and commit to it and instead tried to fold every trope in here possible. Also, what reverse harem????? If there was one I missed it.
Fun first book. Corvina the heroine is spunky and has a heads up when it comes to the dark arts thanks to being linked to numerous magical beings. She phases out of her foster home and sets off to an academy for those like her. One complaint she has is her blue hair and I for one think it sounds awesome. The end kinda drops some bombs so I’m ready to wrap my head around it all and see what’s next in book two.
Reverse harem romances have been a really guilty pleasure for me in 2019. I never in a thousand years would think I would like this type of thing, but it has completely captivated my interest. I can't believe that I am going to say this because I have read some really amazing RH romances, but this was the best start to a multiple love interest romance that I have ever read. It was so perfect!
This dark fantasy follows the adventures of Corvina while she navigates her first year at Shadowborn Academy with her best friend. She learns about magic, the history with the Gods and Godesses and that the forest surrounding the academy is full of secrets. Of course, Corvina has secrets of her own and a traumatic past that lead to her becoming a Shadowborn, but she is about to find out that she might have more secrets that she even knows.
I loved this book. It kind of reminded me of some of the fantasy books I read as a teen, but obviously with more adult elements. There were so many fantastical elements and a competition that added mystery and action to the story line. There was also a very rich and in-depth back history to this world that I feel like the surface was just scratched in book one and I can't wait to dive deeper into it.
The number one thing I loved about this story was the romances. I was completely engrossed by each budding relationship. Like I said above, this was the best beginning to a RH romance that I have ever read. Each relationship was unique, but they all started slow and progressed very naturally. The romances are a focal point in book one, but there is not much action which I liked. I am glad that the romances all have a solid foundation to build upon in the upcoming books. I feel like they are all solid and I am really excited to see what happens. And this is a first for me, but I have TWO favorite guys! Usually one is my favorite and the rest are great, but I LOVE two of them so it will be interesting to see if one pulls ahead of the other for me.
I am really glad that I picked up this book. I kinda feel like it was fate because I just so happened upon in on Instagram and the cover captivated me. I picked it up on a whim because usually when I am interested in a book that I randomly find, it goes to my TBR pile and is never seen again. I am so glad that this was not the case and I am SUPER excited to get my hands on book two!
Received ARC from Author for Honest Review. I Give this Book a 3.5-4/5 Star Rating, Listing as 4.
Cliffhanger(?): Absolutely! Romance: kinda like a teeter totter so..3-3.5/5. Heat: 2/5, Not as Much as I was Anticipating (due to previous books). But it actually fits the story cause the story line is very important. Suspense: 5/5 In All Honesty I’m still trying to figure it out, when I encountered the cliffhanger! Now I Gotta wait for Book 2! Drama: 4/5
No Spoilers.
I had to read this one pretty slow, cause I was afraid I’d miss small details. It was a bit hard to get through, cause it felt a bit congested in some areas with details happening back to back that I did have to reread a few times. But it is a bit hard to understand some of the details and picture of places and specific characters. But the storyline is good!
I Love Pitch!! XD Looking forward to reading more from this Author!
I loved this book! IT starts with Corvina getting tricked by a faerie and almost dying and then coming back shadowborn.. I literally don't need to tell you anything else.. pick it up on that alone. She has to go to a shadowborn academy to learn about her new world and of course that's where she meets her men.
I loved this book. It was an interesting story with interesting characters and to die for men. I can't wait for the next book!
Shadowborn academy..I downloaded you basically from you’re beautiful cover art. This book was good and I will read the rest of the series. This book has ALOT of detail but I kinda felt like it wasn’t needed. I needed more info on the characters..I liked them but I’m not connected to them. I love the world in this book I just neeeeeded so much more. And I am hoping the other books give me that connection n information I need.
Where are and what happened with her raven friends I get maybe one chapter with them and I would loved to have read more about them and to understand her friendship with them more. What about Jane the sister I really thought we would have gotten an answer to why she jumped (in this book)
I have so many more questions I need answer too. Plz let the answer be in the other books.
Ahhh! This book was Amazing!! Once I started reading, I just couldn't stop! I got lost in this world of Darkness and Magic, it was so consuming! I've read these two authors separately, this is my first book of them together and They Killed It! Bailey is a Magic Guru and Snow is a Darkness Queen, together they are just spellbinding! The world-building is alluring, it's like Hogwarts meets Greek mythology on crack with a whole lot of Sexy! The details don't bog you down, from the forest to the academy, the animals, everything comes to life so enchantingly. The characters are wonderful! I loved Vina immediately, She is strong, smart and powerful! She is so easy to love and has a pension for trouble, her knowledge, courage, and loyalty is tested at every turn. I loved her guys! Each one is intriguing and they are all hiding secrets. Who can be trusted and who is the enemy? I loved how thrilling and suspenseful this book was! I will definitely have these characters stuck in my mind! I'm so giddy for this series! I feel like it's just what I've been needing, a new obsession! I love a good shocking surprise and we got a few at the end. The ending was heart-pounding! I'm still dying with questions and trying to piece what I know together! There is so much to look forward to and I can't wait to see how things will play out! I didn't want to get into detail and give away any spoilers, so read it and find out how awesome it is! This book was so GREAT and a perfect way to end or start your Year! I received an Arc in exchange for an honest review.
*Spoiler Alert* Corvina (FMC) died when she was a child, killing everyone nearby and as a result makes her a Shadowborn. Someone who is touched by Dark magic. When she turned 18 her, her friend Sage & her shadow Pitch are enrolled at the Shadowborn Academy. A school where they have to go to hone their magic and darkness. Full of hot students, teachers and wardens. Ones of which are therapist - Gage, Warden - Zander, Student and Prat (lol) Jonah as well as her shadow - Pitch. All of which have an interest in Corvina. Add to that all the student going missing. Its a great start to this series and i already love these characters. Even sweet Echo. Boy was that ending epic! I didnt see that coming thats for sure. Dying for the next book because this one was so good!
DNF 27% Might be because I have been reading too many of these Academy books recently but it just wasn't doing it for me. The introductions to new characters felt flat and her interactions with them seemed off, like disingenuous maybe, which made it hard to get a read of who she was as a person, they put negative emotions that would she need to be overcome in as an afterthought almost but not tied into her thoughts and actions. Just didn't feel cohesive. May try again at a later time.
I like G. Bailey and I can usually get sucked into her books pretty easily. This one I struggled a little with though. For an opening book it was quite slow in some places.
However one thing I really liked was that the fmc actually had powers and was not a naive character just learning they exist. That trope in fantasy can get extremely old.
2 amazing author's back again!! And boy did they deliver like always! This book was aaaaaamazing, the world building, the characters, the story everything was just brilliant!!! I loved Corvina and I can't wait to get more in book 2 I truly recomend this book😍😍😍
I wanted to like it, as I do each book I read, but the relationship between Corvina and Pitch is creepy when you consider she was 8 when he became part of her and the naked/bathing bits are questionable as a result.
The other objectionable parts are the counsellor/psychologist and teachers crossing the line to touch and sexually engage with students in their care. That’s a big NO. These are young women of 18! Like many other young women, men have taken advantage of their youth and inexperience throughout history. Even if the girls think its their choice, it’s morally and ethically reprehensible.
And...someone treats you badly, in this case Josh, but he has abs and a cute butt so that so ok to lust after him? Later he treats Corvina nicely for 5 minutes then goes back to being abusive. That’s classic behaviour for abusive relationships.
And so I cannot continue reading because I’m so annoyed.
These authors never disappoint! Between the many mysteries, the multiple crushes, the badass women and their snark, there isn’t much left you’re missing out on besides the desire for the next book!
This has a big scene at the beginning. Then everything died down with little to nothing happening. Through our the the book there are small things that take place, but nothing wowing. I think this book was okay, but I'm not interested enough to read book 2.
Took me a while to read this due not feeling great after COVID vaccine I took a break. This book however was amazing and I absolutely loved it, the beginning chapters pages are different to normal books and beautiful 🥰 love the characters and the plot, felt like I was there x amazing, 10000 stars x
I really enjoyed this I love that the story was set up without the romance taking too much of a central stage this early but you know who it is she’s interested in
pitch intrigued me as he has been tied to her for so long and who is Ambrose but I was not expecting the betrayal at the end
Meh. Didn't really hate it or like it. The pacing was weird and her relationship development made no sense. Her bully was nice for 5 seconds and she let him kiss her. Vina was a special snowflake with all the guys panting after her.
