On the good side: Some interesting background info on Warhol that fills in some knowledge gaps. Plenty of plates.
I had some major issues with the English translation however. I don’t read any German but I really hope the original is better written. The translation reads like a poor GCSE English essay. Andy deserves better than this. Also there is a lot of repetition throughout the book. The sections seemed to have been stitched together without regard for flow of narrative in the compiled result.
Many of the plates do not show the date and title of the works which is very frustrating. Thank goodness for google image search but this really shouldn’t be necessary! The comments against many of the plates seem very much an afterthought and bear at best a passing relevance to the art work associated with it.
On the other hand if you take all this as tongue in cheek irony I suppose that could have some merit!
It’s a great book to whizz through the plates (some I had not seen before), but much of the text is rather banal. I hope this is “expression lost in poor translation”.
