Aprons & Veils #5
The Courting of Miss Cady
He’s the man of her dreams—she just doesn’t know it yet.
New York socialite Jane Cady is the envy of the season, and the supposed love of Graham Bank’s life, until news arrives that her father’s last merchant ship has sunk, costing them everything. To avoid scandal, the family disappears to manage a hotel in Las Vegas, New Mexico. Determined to support her family, Jane sets aside her dream of marriage and joins her father in working for the Harvey House, as a waitress. But when her former fiancé strolls into the Castañeda Hotel, the weight of her sacrifice becomes all too real.
Rancher Wade Sterling is well acquainted with hard work and that Miss Jane is one of the hardest working Harvey Girls he’s ever met, besides his sister-in-law. When Jane faints on duty, Wade catches her and upon her awakening in his arms, her passionate kiss nearly knocks him off his feet. She begs him to play along and before he knows it, she tells some dandy that they are happily courting. Jane later begs Wade’s forgiveness, explaining it was an emergency as the man was her former fiancé and their relationship ended poorly. But, when the dandy stays in town, Wade finds himself in a fake courtship and in love with the woman of his dreams. He only needs to convince Jane that he is the man of hers.
The Courting of Miss Cady is a fake dating/forced proximity romance with all the sigh-worthy swoon, but no spice!

This story had me hooked from the start! I knew Wade would win me over, he’s such a solid, good-hearted hero.
Jane is left at the altar after her father’s latest failed investment leaves the family broke. They lose everything... money, home, and social standing, and move so her dad can manage a hotel. Jane takes a job there as a Harvey Girl.
She meets Wade, and there's an instant spark. But they part ways... until he walks into the hotel where she works the same day her ex-fiancé shows up. In a bold move to make her ex jealous, Jane kisses Wade, and just like that, a fake courtship begins. It may have been fake for her, but it was anything but a fake kiss for him!
But nothing is simple... Jane’s father is secretly arranging another marriage for her to save the family. Her ex wants a second chance. And Wade? He’s suddenly surrounded by women because of his valuable horse, Raven... but he only wants Jane, for real.
So much drama, tension, and forced proximity. And the way Wade keeps showing up for Jane? Swoon. He may not have as much money as all the other men trying to win her heart, but he is the only one who truly loves her, and he’s willing to fight for her. But can he convince Jane that they can have something beyond fake kisses, and that what he's been feeling all along is real?!
I loved this! 4.5 stars, rounded up to 5.

Miss Cady was such a sweet and optimistic character as the book opens. And then disaster strikes and she doesn't allow herself to wallow in pity. But she is practical and sees the needs of her family and of her life. She gets up, brushes herself off and sets to work. And it's a good thing too because her mom isn't of much help, but considering she wasn't taught how to work hard like this and they've had to leave behind their charmed and wealthy life in New York society, to living in the hard desert of Las Vegas, New Mexico, you can't expect Mrs. Cady to do much.
Jane Cady is put through a lot of ups and downs due to her father. But I loved watching her rise with grace and dignity through it all. And I loved watching her find her true love. Her knight in shining armor. And not some imitation of what she thought was love but was really just a facade.
Be still my cowgirl beating heart! When Wade Sterling rescues an unsuspecting Jane from being trampled by longhorns, you're going to swoon!!! My heart was racing, and it wasn't just from the stampede and impending danger for Jane. Nope. It was more so for the handsome cowboy who came in, and swooped her into his arms and rescued her. Not just her physically, but her heart! *Happy Sigh*
I loved how they worked through misunderstandings. Especially the biggest one of all. Miss Cady jumping into his arms, kissing him and declaring that they are courting, all in the name of dissuading her ex-fiance to think there's any possible chance of a second chance for them! I loved every moment of it!!!
This was the first book in the Aprons and Veils series that I've read. You can definitely read it as a stand alone. And you'll be wanting to go back and read the previous stories. I have the previous ones and just need to go read them now. I've only read a couple of books by this author but I loved them so much that I'm hooked!!! You too will be hooked!
Content: Sweet and clean. Some kisses but nothing further.

Another wonderful addition to the Aprons and Veils series! And I expected nothing less, which is why, upon receipt, I began reading it directly after work, until 11:30, and woke up early to finish it at 6:30 this morning. 🤭
This book has some wonderfully dramatic moments, an almost double meet-cute, and beautiful faith woven throughout. Wade is a kind, gentle hero, and Jane is generous beyond expectation.
Quotable: "Lord, help me through today. Let me not focus on the rumors. Renew my heart, Lord, and give me hope for my family’s future."
I loved this tale and always enjoy returning to a Harvey House.
Highly recommended! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I received an eVersion from the author prior to release, for my honest opinion. All thoughts are mine alone without expectation or compensation.

This is an engaging historical romance series! My favorite part of this one is Miss Cady making a quick decision to rope in Wade Sterling to make a point with her ex-fiancé. Wade is a completely charming hero.

I have a confession to make.
If a book contains a Harvey Girl, a rancher, a fake courtship, and Grace Hitchcock's name on the cover, I keep looking for excuses to read one more chapter.
The Courting of Miss Cady was pure delight.
The kind of delight that makes it impossible to read "just one more chapter" because suddenly it is midnight and you're grinning at fictional people as though they are your actual friends.
Wade Sterling walked right onto my list of favorite heroes. The man is patient, hardworking, kind, and somehow manages to survive a fake courtship with Jane Cady, which may be one of the most dangerous occupations in New Mexico.
And Jane?
I adored her.
Watching her navigate disappointment, changing circumstances, unexpected feelings, and one refining challenge after another while learning to trust God and His direction for her life was worth every page.
What I appreciate so much about Grace Hitchcock's books is that faith is never hanging around the edges of the story hoping someone notices it. It matters. The characters wrestle with it. Their choices are shaped by it. God is present in a way that is natural and meaningful.
Also, can we talk about how much fun fake-courtship stories are when they're done well?
The awkwardness.
The pretending.
The sweet tension.
I smiled so much while reading this book.
If you're looking for a clearly Christian historical romance filled with heart, humor, tender moments, lovable characters, and enough fake-courtship chaos to keep you happily turning pages, this one deserves a spot on your reading list.
Five stars from me.
Now excuse me while I patiently wait for Grace Hitchcock to write approximately fifty more books.

I thoroughly enjoyed every captivating page of The Courting of Miss Cady, another delightful Harvey Girl story by Grace Hitchcock. This story takes place at and near the Castaneda hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada in 1898.
After Jane Cady's father loses their fortune, her fiance, Graham Banks, leaves her at the altar. The Cady's find themselves near destitute, humiliated, and hustling out of town on a train westward from New York to Las Vegas.
Fred Harvey appoints Jane's father as the Manager of the Harvey House in Las Vegas, and her father convinces Jane up to work there to keep part of her wages. But Jane is thrilled to have independence and live in the dormitory with the other Harvey Girls. Despite her pampered upbringing, she is not afraid of hard work.
"One day. I lasted one day in the Wild West." She ends up in the way of a Longhorn Cattle Drive until "a strong arm wrapped around her waist, securing her to the rider. She looked up at her rescuer. The sun shone down on a Stetson....She blinked, finding a cowboy, a real live cowboy, bearing a fierce scowl. He was the most ruggedly handsome man she had ever seen." Rancher Wade Sterling was in town briefly before heading back to the mountains and his horse ranch. He is a decent hardworking man who doesn't get into town too often. "She was the most beautiful woman he ever beheld...." And he didn't even get her name. All she knew was his kindness and that they both loved horses. "Good gracious. Left at the altar one moment and in a romance novel the next."
Readers will love this page-turning story told with humor, a sweet romance between two very different people, and the chaos that ensues with her destitute father, and the two New Yorkers who show up unexpectedly. I love how Wade is willing to help her with a fake romance to get everyone to back off about marrying Jane. You don't want to miss this enchanting story!
I love learning more about Fred Harvey and the Harvey girls. In the Author's note, Grace Hitchcock talks more about these brave women.

I was given an advanced readers copy all thoughts and opinions are my own.
The very first book of Grace’s that I ever read was a Harvey girl book: “the Finding of Miss Fairfield, and I fell in love with her writing, and the Harvey Girls in general! I have made sure to read every book on the Harvey Girls that Grace has written, so when I saw this book I was excited to read it! There were so many twists and turns to the book that I caught myself thinking about it! I kept wanting to refer to Jane as if everyone would know who she was! Wade was probably one of my favorite characters in this book! I caught myself smiling and wishing for a wade of my own! The only part of the book I didn’t like was the end, but that was only because it was over! I was sad that there were no more pages to read and I didn’t have any more of Wade and Jane to learn about!
I highly recommend this book

I absolutely loved this story! It was great! Poor Jane gets jilted at the altar after her Father loses all their money. The family moves to New Mexico and Jane becomes a Harvey Girl. She is used to having money and can’t cook or do much but she works hard. Wade is taking a break from work and staying in town where he meets Jane. When Jane’s former fiancé comes into the restaurant , she kisses Wade on impulse, but Wade isn’t complaining. Hence we have a fake dating story and I loved it! I really loved Wade and Jane together. Drama abounds in this book and Wade and Jane don’t have an easy go of it. Her father keeps complicating matters. Jane was such a hard worker and I loved how dedicated she was and kind. I also loved how much Wade wanted to make the relationship real but gave her time. Great Christian content. Overall, a great read and I definitely recommend.

Oh my gosh, I loved this fun story! I instantly fell in love with Jane and Wade. Wade is the swoony cowboy who knows how to treat a lady. Jane is a survivor and fights for what she loves. An entertaining read from the beginning to the end, I couldn't put it down! A few snarky characters contribute to the ups and downs of Jane’s journey, not to mention her own father. Each page has you guessing how this story will play out. I think this is my favorite Harvey Girl story. Now that I have finished, I miss the characters and can't wait to see which Sterling brother finds a bride next.

This is a great book! It’s a Christian Western romance, and a bit of a roller coaster. The MCs are both excellent characters, kind, honorable, and completely endearing. It’s impossible not to get frustrated with the FMC’s father as he makes foolish and selfish mistake after mistake, but it’s sweet watching Jane and Wade work through it all together. Their relationship is well developed, and I really enjoyed their story.
There is a mild Christian message throughout the book with prayer, faith, and the seeking of God’s will. Though it could have been a little smoother in how it’s woven in, it’s still tasteful and I appreciated the messaging.
Content:
There is no foul language or sex, and the violence is minimal. The romance is limited to lightly descriptive kisses. This is a Christian book with prayer, some scriptures, and the seeking of God’s will.

Jane Cady's whole life is turned upside down when she finds out her father has lost her entire fortune along with his own while at her wedding. Her fiance immediately leaves her at the altar, her family moves from New York to New Mexico, and both she and her father are employed at the Harvey House. But the change isn't as bad as Jane feared. Especially with a handsome cowboy around to save her. Wade Sterling has lived outside of town in fear of his past, but now his name has been cleared, and his brothers are determined it is time for him to live his life, including taking care of the town's stables while the owner recovers from an injury. When Jane's former fiance and his friend both come to convince her to marry one of them, Wade agrees to a fake courtship to protect her. But there is nothing fake about their feelings.
It was delightful watching Jane become her own person, and Wade was so wonderfully accepting of her just being her. I'm not sure I would have been as forgiving as Jane of her father's actions, but it all built her character. Overall, a beautiful story about how life changes can bring blessings you would never have imagined.

“Love is such a funny word—it can mean so many different things. For instance, I love chocolate and horse riding.”
So says Graham Bank, as he jilts Jane Cady in Grace Hitchcock’s The Courting of Miss Cady. Bk #5 of the Aprons and Veils series, Jane’s story stands on its own. After Jane’s father loses everything, her groom leaves her at the altar. Mr. Cady, once part of the Fortune 400, is forced to moved West and take a job as house manager at the Harvey House in Las Vegas, New Mexico. Because her family is in such dire straights, Jane goes from wealthy socialite to working girl at the Hotel Castañeda. Ostracized by most of the Harvey Girls there, Jane struggles against their prejudices. To make matters worse, as she is serving a handsome cowboy one day, in walk her ex-fiancé and his best friend. What can Jane do, but grab said horse rancher/breeder and start kissing him? Thus begins her fake relationship with caring, loyal, and kind Wade Sterling, whose heart is made of gold.
Wade knows he wants the relationship to be real very quickly, but there are so many obstacles in his way, most of them human. Some see him as competition, some as a prize, others as a business pawn. Can he rise above other people’s expectations to enjoy the freedom God had given him, and find a way to share that freedom with Jane?
Speaking of business pawns, Jane is just that in her father’s eyes. My heart hurt for hers as her father repeatedly puts her in untenable positions in order to better himself or the family. (How thankful I was for a good earthly father at this point!) Jane has to move beyond her fears of being rejected by her father for her “disobedience“ to his directives. She begins to see her father does not accurately reflect God the Father, whose love is unearned. “Lord, thank You for reminding me that I am treasured, You love me and that, because of You, I have worth. Forgive me for placing my identity in my family’s wealth.”
Just as it seems God is working circumstances out for Jane and her cowboy, Jane’s father’s actions threaten to ruin everything yet again. I loved how Jane shows love to her parents, without feeling the need to obey questionable orders. She never washes her hands of her family, which would have been tempting! Through their egregious faults, Jane still is concerned about their welfare.
If you enjoy historical fiction, stories of the Harvey Girls, the Gilded Age and the West, or horse-related novels, this book may be a treasure for you!
I received a copy of the book from CelebrateLit. I also bought my own copy. No positive review was required and all opinions are my own.
Notable Quotables:
“Too long you have been relying on others for your future. My future begins now. The Lord is my father. With Him on my side, surely this will be a grand adventure worthy of Meg’s hopes for me.” -Jane
“Is this what business is like? Kissing the rings of kings and hoping that they bestow upon you, a mere mortal trying to earn an honest wage, their favor?” ( Wade)
“Losing the family fortune is the best thing that has ever happened to me.” - Jane
"It’s a terrible thing to treat others differently just because of a change of fortune that wasn’t even your fault. You are poor now, but that doesn’t change who you are." - Wade
“That is nearing unforgivable, but I am attempting to truly forgive you so that my heart is free and not caught in the brambles of bitterness because those thorns will only draw my blood, my hurt and I won’t heal unless I choose to forgive.” - Jane

A darling love at first sight, fake dating, historical romance! I’ve loved each of the Aprons & Veils books from Grace Hitchcock & The Courting of Miss Cady is another fabulous edition. From the start, this book grabbed hold & didn’t let go. From the elite high society of New York to the Wild West of New Mexico, I loved following Miss Cady & her family as the go from riches to rags & find new beginnings, love, & second chances.
New York Socialite Jane Cady is about to get married to one of the most eligible bachelors in town. As she’s ready to walk down the aisle, news arrives that her entire family’s fortune is lost at sea & her future groom decides to leave her at the alter. Fleeing in disgrace, she & her family move to Las Vegas, New Mexico where her father becomes the manager for one of the Harvey Houses at the Castañeda Hotel.
Hoping to find some independence away from her controlling father, Jane becomes a Harvey House waitress & is rescued by a handsome rancher, Wade Sterling who literally & figuratively sweeps her off her feet. When her old fiancé shows up at the hotel, she winds up kissing Wade & roping him into a fake dating situation. Wade’s already half in love with her, but can he convince her to date him for real?
I enjoyed this story so much! Jane’s such a patient, kind woman. Her father’s something else; stealing her inheritance & willing to do anything to get back the riches he lost. I loved how dedicated she was to her family despite her father’s machinations.
Wade has a sordid past yet found forgiveness & redemption. I loved how thoughtful he was & so willing to help Jane & her family. He’s got a successful ranch & horse breeding business that’s just taking off & now all he needs is Jane to share it with. From the spur of the moment first kiss to the sweet undercurrent of attraction between them, seeing the fake dating turn to more was so much fun. I also loved seeing Jane take on the challenge of waitressing & attempting to cook.
It’s a sweet, swoony, historical romance I highly recommend! Though part of a series, it can be read as a standalone. I received an advanced copy but also borrowed in Kindle Unlimited. All opinions are my own & voluntarily provided.

New York - 1898
Miss Jane Cady, 23, daughter of the very wealthy Knickerbocker couple, Benjamin and Mildred Cady, is preparing to walk down the aisle to marry equally wealthy Graham Bank. But he instead meets her at the entrance of the church and tells her that he cannot marry her or his mother will disinherit him. Shocked, she learns that her father has just his entire fortune when a scheme he joined ended up literally sinking in the ocean. Now, they must leave town and they head west.
Las Vegas, Nevada
Benjamin Cady has been hired to be the new manager of a Harvey House hotel and restaurant along a railroad. Mildred and Jane are to live in a rundown house just outside town. Walking along the road to the Hotel, Jane’s nearly run down by a herd of steer but saved when a cowboy, Wade Sterling, grabs her up and onto his horse. She is very grateful to him.
Jane realizes that her father wants her to work as a Harvey Girl waitress and plans to take her money to pay for the family’s expenses. The man is a cruel and despicable person. However, Jane is brave and agrees. She works hard, long hours but loves the challenge. She is happy to meet Wade again and finds he will be working to help a stable keeper to manage his horses while an injury the man received heals. Wade will stay at the Hotel and looks forward to seeing Jane. Their friendship soon turns to more. But Graham comes to town and brings a friend both of whom want to marry Jane. She wants nothing to do with them but they remain persistent. Can Jane get them to leave and is there a future for her and Wade?
This is a delightful story that I enjoyed very much. The characters are real and I so admired Jane’s strength and determination to make a life for herself and her family even with her father’s persistent greed. I first read about the Harvey Girls in a novel by Juliette Fay earlier this year. It was my first time learning about them so I was very intrigued to read this book. Wade is such a real man and he and his brothers will be very successful in their endeavors. Do enjoy this sweet, clean romance.

The Courting of Miss Cady is book five in the Aprons & Veils series that is written by Grace Hitchcock. I’ve read the other books but they can be read as a stand alone. I love traveling back to the era of the Harvey Girls.
This book focuses on fallen heiress Jane Cady. I was not a fan of her father. He reminds me of a shady businessman. He loses his fortune and this causes the marriage of his daughter and Graham Banks to fall apart on her wedding day. Cast out of New York society and they travel west. Jane’s father has become the house manager at the Castañeda Hotel. Her father wants to control everything. Including her finances. She takes a job as a waitress at the Harvey House.
Jane is happy to earn her own way. She’s hoping to find freedom from the tight constraints her father had placed on her. One day she’s waiting tables, and her former fiancé walks in. So logically she kisses the man that she’s waiting on, Wade Sterling. (Logically lol)
Wade is a horse trainer. He’s had a rough past and lives like a hermit. He’s in town to help manage a stable when he’s drawn to Jane. So when she kisses him he’s lost all sense to him. Then she proposes a fake courtship.
I loved Jane. She’s making the most of the situation her father’s business dealings have left her in. She wants to make her way on her own. However she doesn’t count on falling for Wade. Wade has a rough past but believes that he’s finally found his person. They have some obstacles that have popped up including Jane’s former fiancé.
I love this series. I love all the characters and their stories. I hope Dolly gets her own story. She’s been such a driving force in the whole series. I loved the ending where the author points out the truth and fiction.
Thank you to the author, publisher and Celebrate Lit for allowing me to read a copy of this book all thoughts are my own.

The Courting of Miss Cady is a wonderful historical fiction novel. I’m a huge fan of the Harvey Girls and love reading novels about them. This is also book five in a series. You don’t have to read the series in order, but I highly recommend you do. After all, everyone loves reading more books versus fewer books!
In this novel, we meet Cady. She’s had a cushy life, really. She’s had money and prestige and been a part of high society. She’s engaged, and her life is good! But then. Isn’t that how it always goes? Life is good, and then bam, out of nowhere. Well, that’s how it is for Cady.
Her father’s last shipment (merchant ship) is lost. Money is gone. So are their friends and connections. To avoid scandal, they disappear to New Mexico. Her father to manage a hotel and Cady to be a Harvey girl. It’s all going well. Cady is a hard worker and enjoys her job.
But then! Yep, another one of those.
Her ex-fiance shows up at her station. She may pass out and wake up in a handsome rancher’s arms. And a plan is formed! She kisses him, begs him to play along that they’re an item, and so begins this relationship of convenience. Only, is it all convenience? Because Wade has feelings for her.
What will they do as the dandy stays around?
Loved the characters. Loved the plot. It’s a fast read, and I would definitely read it again.
I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book, which I received from Celebrate Lit. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. I was not required to write a positive review, nor was I compensated in any other way. All opinions expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the FTC regulations.

Such a funny, sweet, read! From the moment we meet Ms. Jane Cady, you can't but help feeling bad for her and her situation. On her wedding she finds out that her father lost all the money their family has in the world. She's left at the altar, forced to leave her home to head out west, and then forced to go to work! Such a lot of upheaval for a young woman who thinks her life is going to be that of a high society wife.
Enter Wade, the heroic cowboy who not only saves her from being trampled by a herd of cattle, but falls in love with her at first sight. If that doesn't make you want to pick up this book then I don't know what would.
I really enjoyed the pluck and determination Jane has as she's forced to learn how to do things on her own and try to take care of her family. The "pretend" romance she has with Wade is sweetly done, and easily had me cheering for everything to work out for them.
I really enjoyed the glimpse into how the Harvey Girls worked and lived, as well as the supporting cast of characters. There were times in this story I wasn't at all sure how the author was going to work it all out, but work it out she did! This book left me smiling after turning the last page.
If you like your historical fiction with a dash of humor, and a touch of romance, then check this one out now. You don't even have to have read the earlier books in the series as each book does a good job standing alone on its own.
*I read an early ARC copy from the author. All opinions expressed are entirely my own.

Christian Historical Romance books are a genre that I really enjoy. The Courting of Miss Cady by Grace Hitchcock is Book 5 in the Aprons and Veils Series. I have been enjoying this series since the beginning, so I was excited to read this one.
The storyline is very intriguing from the beginning of the book, similar to the other books in this series. The 2 main characters are Jane Cady and Wade Sterling. Jane, a former New York Socialite, now lives in New Mexico and is a Harvey Girl. Her family lost everything when her father's business went under, so they fled to New Mexico and she works at the Harvey House that her father manages. Jane had dreams of her own, but she also feels family first in life, so helping her family is her focus. The surprise on her face when her ex fiance comes to the Hotel where she works, makes her faint. Wade was right there to catch her and is stunned when she kisses him passionately upon coming to. Jane has to quickly explain that she would like to be in a "fake courtship" so that her ex-fiance doesn't think he still has a chance with her. I really LOVE that Wade has true feelings for Jane from the very beginning. It takes Jane a bit of time to realize that Wade is a kind and gentle person. The relationship between Wade and Jane grows slowly and the fact that they trust God's leading for their relationship is amazing. This book is one of Faith, Trusting God's Will, LOVE and Family. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian Historical Romance books! WONDERFUL BOOK!

The Courting of Miss Cady by Grace Hitchcock is book five in the Aprons & Veils series, but can be read as a stand alone novel. Jane Cady is a New York socialite about to marry what she thinks is the love of her life, Graham Bank. When news arrives that her family is now almost penniless Graham calls off the wedding, Jane and her family move to Las Vegas, New Mexico, and Jane begins working as Harvey House Waitress. One day she faints in rancher Wade Sterling’s arms and the kisses him after seeing her former fiancé. Is a fake courtship a way to help them both?
The Courting of Miss Cady was a joy to read with its dual POV. Jane and Wade are kind, fun and relatable characters, and I loved watching their fake dating turn into something more. They were both hard working, caring, and I enjoyed watching them both grown and mature in the story. The historical setting of the Harvey House in Las Vegas, New Mexico was fascinating and it was interesting to contrast with the New York Four Hundred society that Jane grew up in.
The Courting of Miss Cady is a fantastic read with a great setting, engaging characters, and sweet romance. I appreciated the themes of knowing what truly matters, forgiveness, and friendship. I highly recommend The Courting of Miss Cady by Grace Hitchcock.

What stood out to me the most was the greed and disrespect of Jane’s father. It was so difficult for Jane to discover how deceitful he was and the cruel way he used Jane for financial gain. I liked how she was strong and found her own path to freedom and happiness. I was pleasantly surprised to see her become a Harvey Girl. I am always intrigued about this well known group and how they expect excellence in everyone that works for them.
Jane has a lot to overcome after being shunned at the altar and discovering that her family has lost everything. I was thinking that if something like this happened to a prominent family today, the media would turn it into a circus. Jane is desperate to leave the scandal behind, but will it be possible?
Wade finds himself as Jane’s knight in shining armor when she needs someone to pretend they are courting. I did like the banter between them and how respectful he is towards everyone. Wade takes an interest in Jane and begins to have real feelings for her. He has no idea the adventure he will have as her father and ex fiancé interfere in their lives.
A beautiful story of strength, faith and forgiveness gives this story just the right feel for a wonderful example of God’s plan for our lives. We don’t have to be defined by our past.

I love all things Grace Hitchcock, and this does not disappoint; this is part of The Aprons and Veils series. Another great Harvey Girl story!! Jane Cady is a socialite in New York; and is left at the alter by her fiance Graham Bank. Graham finds out that Jane's father is penniless. Jane's father's last merchant ship sinks, costing them everything. To avoid scandal, the family disappears to Las Vegas, New Mexico. Her father is to manage The Harvey House, appointed by Fred Harvey. "Miss Cady," Jane becomes a Harvey Girl, her father persuades her; so he can keep part of her salary for the household bills. Jane loves living in the dormitory and making a few friends. She now has some freedom and independence that she did not have in New York. She sets foot into a cattle drive and is rescued by Rancher Wade Sterling. She was the most beautiful woman he ever met, but didn't get her name. On another occasion Jane jumps into Wade's arms and kisses him in the dining room. Their are many ups and downs for Jane, due to her father. This is a definate page turner!!! Love the plot, great setting, and strong intense interesting characters. I look forward to reading more from Ms. Grace Hitchcock!!!!!

The Courting of Miss Cady is book five in the "Aprons & Veils" series but they can all be read as stand-alone stories.
Jane and her family move from New York to New Mexico to escape a scandal involving her family. There she becomes a Harvey Girl working at the local hotel and meets cowboy Wade. Jane and her family are very much about money, impressing others, and being a part of high society. Unfortunately, those priorities end up being their downfall and financial ruin. Jane steps up to help her parents and sister Theo out of the financial mess their father has got them into but runs into many obstacles along the way.
I liked the characters especially Jane and Wade and their perseverance to have a better life to provide for their families and the strong determination they showed throughout the story. Wade was very supportive of Jane despite the culture back then with women and their lower place in society. The story line was fun, engaging and interesting from beginning to end. I can't wait to read more from this historical, clean romance series! I really enjoyed reading it from beginning to end.

This was such a fun story! Jane Cady could not have imagined how drastically her life would change after she was jilted at the altar. The family’s fall from grace and subsequent move from New York to New Mexico brought big changes and difficulty adjusting. However, Jane not only adjusted but persevered in her new life situation as a Harvey Girl. Wade was practically pushed out of his mountain home by his brothers with a directive to live life in town for a while. While Jane and Wade’s romance was of the insta-love variety, it did not feel unbelievable and I loved how they knocked aside each obstacle that would keep them from their happiness. During the trying situations with her father and coworkers, Jane discovered the source of her true self worth and found the courage to stand up for herself and not worry about the perceptions of others. Such a good series!

Rescued by a cowboy that believes in love at first sight?!
All dressed and no where to go. Jane Cady was jilted, left at the altar because her fiancé decided, without her wealth, they were no longer compatible, their values did not align. Leaving NYC with her family, their reputation in ruins, they arrive in Las Vegas, NM where father will be the manager of the Castaneda, a Harvey Hotel.
Jane dives right into the job to become a Harvey Girl. Her lovely, optimistic outlook endears her to some of her coworkers, while others see her as a threat. Her chance meeting of a good looking young cowboy brings a whole new aspect into her life. Learning that her worth is not based on the wealth her father forfeited but rather that she is treasured by God makes all the difference.
A copy of Aprons & Veils Book FIve was received through Valmont House Publishers and BookFunnel. These thoughts are my own and were in no way solicited.

A heartwarming, historical rom-com, with a fake courting trope, an admirable heroine, dashing cowboy, and plenty of heart.
When her father's investments go belly up, Jane Cady's family packs up and her father takes up managing a Harvey House. I admired Jane for making the best of a bad situation, taking a job and brushing off the unkind words of others, clinging to her faith, and being willing to try new things.
A well-paced read, with great character development and interaction, as well as humor. Wade is surprised to have found the woman of his dreams fall out of the sky and into his arms, he's a gentleman through and through, to the point of some confusion. I liked his strong work ethic and how he keeps working to show Jane he cares.
Overall, an entertaining read, with great interaction, humor, faith, and romance. Highly recommend!

This is not my first Harvey Girls novel, I’ve read several. They are fascinating to me. These women work hard and are held to high standards. Jane got her job as a Harvey Girl after her family lost their fortune and her father was given a job as the manager of the same establishment. The only home they could afford in Las Vegas was a broken down, dusty house with very little furniture. Her mother was spoiled and her father was a gambler. Wade was a cowboy that rescued Jane on her first day in town. She was almost trampled by a barreling steer. He kept a close look out for her, especially when a former fiancée that left her standing at the altar shows up. I felt intense sorrow for Jane because of her father. He did not show any love or concern for her.
So many things became clearer as the story unfolded toward the end. I enjoyed getting to know Jane and Wade.

What a pleasure to embark on another adventure in the Aprons and Veils series! Set in the late 1890s, this story captured me from the beginning with Miss Jane Cady's New York wedding debacle and then swept me away to New Mexico and kept me glued to the pages for her stirring Harvey Girl adventure. Just the right combination of delightfully light and heart-tugging serious moments makes this read both engaging and deeply satisfying. Jane and rancher Wade Sterling are a precious couple and so right for each other although they come from different worlds. I greatly appreciate the meaningful way faith is seamlessly integrated into the storyline. This story left me smiling and waiting anxiously to hear more from the Casteñeda Hotel Harvey Girls and the Sterling brothers! Note: Although this is the fifth book in the series, it can easily be read and enjoyed as a standalone.

I think each book in the Aprons & Veils series gets better and better!
The Courting of Miss Cady is a convoluted tale of courtship, coercion, and consistency, all tied up by the end in a lovely wedding. *happy sighs*
Wade is the sort of man (cowboy or not) whom any woman would love to have as a husband. Considerate, kind, demonstrative, protective, hard-working, determined, family-oriented, and the list goes on. Graham however... he's one you love to hate. Ms. Hitchcock has done an amazing job of fleshing out all her primary characters in this story, while also giving cameo appearances to some of the others from previous stories. I sincerely hope there will be another Aprons & Veils story to come, as this is one of the more entertaining, clean, and hopeful series I've had the pleasure of reading.
I received an ARC; this is my honest review.

I just loved The Courting of Miss Cady! It’s one of those stories that makes you smile all the way through. Jane is such a strong, likable heroine, and Wade—well, he’s the kind of man every woman hopes will show up just when she needs him most. The sweet banter between the two of them had me grinning, and their growing friendship turning into something more was just plain heartwarming.
This book has everything I love in a feel-good romance: a little humor, a little drama, and a whole lot of heart. Grace Hitchcock did such a lovely job showing how love can grow out of trust, kindness, and second chances. It’s the perfect cozy read for anyone who believes in happy endings. 💕I was provided a complimentary copy of this book by the author in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed here are entirely my own.

These Harvey Girls stories offer a picture of Old West history with some society propriety in an endearing tale. This one tells a tale of love at first sight, or at least the appearance of that as a fake courtship ensues between two who don’t know each other. The interaction of the fallen rich girl and the humble cowboy, along with other characters at the hotel and from her former life, add to the drama and dilemmas. The author threw in some surprises along the way too. The plot is similar to the other fun reads in this series, but the depths this family fell too is staggering. The realistic characters come across as living and true, engaging and unique. The novel draws readers into the action and makes them feel like eyewitnesses to the events. It may also make you consider how you view others and how you treat them. I received a copy from the author. All opinions are my own.
