This suspense thriller about a combat veteran who "fixes" potentially nasty situations for clients hooked me from the first page. The unexplained disappearance of a young man leads an attractive woman who may not be who she appears to be to hire Evan Drake to find the missing man.
The job leads both Drake and his client into some dark situations, involving ruthless businessmen, Russian gangsters and a prototype AI program which could have a deadly flaw.
I liked protagonist Drake, who comes across as smart, tech savvy and refreshingly low key. Not a cliche "strong and silent" type he shows himself to be a man to reckon with in more ways than one.
Evan Drake, ex-soldier lives/works in LA as a fixer of sorts to lawyers, agents, rich folks etc. He's not a licensed anything but can get things done. He gets work by referrals from previous clients, drives a VW convertible beetle(really a bad look for a fixer) and gets a new client looking for a missing friend. He's reluctant to help as he feels she's not totally honest.
A few days later the missing man turns up dead and she wants him to find out what happened. Evan ends up discovering new tech AI for an in-home system for lonely people that actually is in testing and has some bad side effects but will be going public soon. Can he stop the launch of this dangerous product, get the truth out of his client and stay alive in the process.
It takes a bit to get to the good parts but an ok read.
Drake completed the job for his new client, however there were too many loose ends and he couldn’t let go til he cleared them all up. Taking us through a gripping thriller involving a dark underworld involving what seemed to be a legit company that produces algorithm games. Unfortunately the CEO wasn’t prepared to lose millions of dollars just because a player committed suicide and others were expected to follow. Calling in his Russian friends to forestall Drake when he was getting too near to the truth. Great read from a brilliant author.
I absolutely loved this book. It is the first in a series and I will be reading them all. I love ther characters, the story is fast paced and hard to put down. I love the story line and how each part unfolds. The first mystery is revealed early on, but the pace pics up as Evan Drake try to stop the killer. I like the writing style and will be looking for the next book in the series. I think if you like this genre you shoul try the Evan Drake series. You won't be sorry.
Evan Drake is an investigator. He does research for others. He and his girlfriend were living together, but they broke up and she moved out. He is contacted by a woman who wants him to investigate a company that sells virtual dates. She is convinced there is something wrong with the programming of the virtual dates. Can she and Evan figure out what is going on?
Good introductory first in series manages to stand out in crowded genre. Up to the minute storyline, continuous action and interesting characters dispel potential yawns from "L.A. Fixer", sufficiently enough to look forward to next in series.
Pretty typical mystery/thriller. Fixer is hired to find a missing man. There is much convulsion. Probably would have given 4 instead of 3 except for one thing that kept pulling me out of the story. It was written in present tense instead of past. Would it annoy everyone? Probably not. But dang it! Some of us have degreed in English!
I may have found yet another author I cant live without. I am adding this guy to my must have list. This book is a real page turner. The main character is just that a real character, after all, a "fixer" should be scary, not drive an old VW...lol. Give this one a try if you're tired of the same old cliches and are looking for a read with substance.
I was half way through the book before it got interesting. It's one of those where too much time was spent on background. Once you get into the second half, things really heat up. If you have the book or are getting it, just remember to wade through the first half for the pay off. It's an interesting premise and probably at least a little different than similar books you may have read.
Grabs you from the opening chapter and keeps moving along at a fast clip. Interesting twist midway when the true motive is revealed. Very timely. Captures LA perfectly. Looking forward to second book in series.
Plausible storyline considering what’s been happening through some social media already. However the writing style is quite simple, and the MC is lacking a clear definition - he’s not a Cole nor a Pike, nor a Reacher, shifting around somewhere in between all three.
Such a great book. I absolutely loved it. So many twists and turns and filled with suspense. I am looking forward to reading whatever comes next for these characters.
I loved the book. It had me intrigued right away. Throughout the twists and turns i remained focused. Everything that could happen did from Russian Mafia to sexual holograms.
As a fixer for Hollywood celebrities he doesn’t have to follow rules he just needs results. This time Evan might be in too deep. He has pissed of the police, a narcissistic tech co. owner and the Russian mob. He is really just trying to do the right thing. He was hired by Skye to get to the bottom of a a missing man, Ryan. Like a good thriller all is not what it seems. A solid read and seems to be the start of a series.
