Rate this book
Shooting Straight is the gripping biography of a skilful soldier and an outstanding leader from the Indian Army-Lt Gen Rostum Kaikhushru Nanavatty. It recounts the adventures of a decorated and accomplished infantry officer who saw action in Nagaland, Sri Lanka, Siachen and Baramulla; it also tells the story of a military leader who was known for his operational acumen, his intellectual brilliance and his ability to speak 'truth to power'.

Meticulously researched and objectively written by Arjun Subramaniam, an accomplished military historian, Shooting Straight offers a close look at soldiering, command and leadership in turbulent times. Stretching across five decades-from the 1960s to the 2000s-the book offers insights into several avatars of contemporary warfare. These include counterinsurgency and counter-terrorist operations, operations by Special Forces, high-altitude operations and 'No War No Peace' contingencies. Finally, the book offers a sweeping landscape of the Indian Army from the perspective of one of its most respected commanders in recent times.

For anyone interested in India's military history, Shooting Straight is a must-read.

In this book, Lt Gen. Rostum K Nanavatty is portrayed as a man of integrity, discipline, and dedication, traits that shine through every chapter. From his early years to his distinguished military career, the book delves into the challenges and triumphs Nanavatty faced, highlighting his resilience and commitment to the nation.

Arjun Subramaniam has done a great job in balancing his personal life and professional ups and downs. His writing is very simple, provides context and is engaging. About 30% of the book has various references and detailed notes taken by Gen Nanavatty during his carrier and that gives the reader a wealth of first hand information.

A book about one of the finest military commanders of India. The book is very well researched and penned down. Those who known and had the opportunity to serve under Gen Nanavatty will always remember him. He was a true warrior and a role model. Only once in a generation does such an individual come and leave an impression on everyone. Such leaders and soldiers are sadly only too rare to come across in today’s day and age where it’s all about showing off and projecting. Gen Nanavatty is the last of the true ‘Karm Yogi’s’.

A beautiful and well researched book about an outstanding General. This book is a lesson in professionalism, which should be read by every individual. Reading about his life, his professionalism and his achievements makes one realise that one can be true to one's profession, believe and stand up to one's values and still reach great heights. One doesn't have to be a yes man for that. Grateful to the author for a lucid narration and in depth research.
