Nancy grew up in Enfield and began life thinking she was no different than others in her community. As she grew older, she was confronted with an identity that she could not keep hidden. One day she asked her father why their surname was MacDonald if they were Mi’kmaq and the answer shocked her. She shares the story of her great-grandfather Louis (Newell) MacDonald who was known by the Mi’kmaq as the illegitimate son of Sir John A. MacDonald who was custom adopted. W hat’s in a name, a lot if you have to keep both sides of your family a secret in the community you grew up in. Nancy would spend much of her life helping to reclaim custom adoptions in the Mi’kmaq communities in Nova Scotia.
