WHO

Rate this book
WHO begins with the abrupt disappearance of Kaia Ingram, the inaugural member of Philadelphia’s August Girls—a puzzling group of young ladies that have gone missing near the end of each subsequent summer. As the fifth anniversary looms, Maura Sterling is waking up and reveling in her newfound empty nest now that her twins, Soleil and Selene, have moved to the city to start their journalism careers after graduating college. Just as Maura musters the strength to get prepared for a busy day ahead, there is a startling and unexpected knock. Nervously, she cracks open her front door and is shocked to find a pair of detectives who have come with a purpose—to share the news that her girls, too, may have vanished.

From there, a small circle of characters known by the Sterling family add to the murkiness of the already convoluted cases tied to each of the August Girls. As the investigation heats up, will Maura and those detectives be able to find her daughters before it’s too late? Through their work, might they get any closer to learning what has happened to the others? Who, ultimately, has done this?

5% of all profits* of WHO are committed to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC). Because of the darker themes found throughout books like these, it was important for this project to serve a greater purpose outside of simple entertainment. Sadly, this subject matter has devastated so many, and NCMEC does an incredible job of aiding individuals and families impacted by such horrific, real-world circumstances.

It's different in the way of writing style.

The story itself is intriguing and does take you through different stages of the abductions.

You do get the past and present between the sisters and the mom.

The ending I didn't expect.

I never know how to review thriller/mystery type books without spoilers so please bear with my vagueness.
It took me a few chapters to really grasp the formatting of this book, but when I did, and I piece it all together. Genius. I loved how it was and don’t think it should have been any other way. Getting the stories of the other Girls was perfect to keep you invested on the main plot line. And I know it was thriller but I truly did not know what to expect for an ending so it was so easy to keep reading to have to know what was gonna happen. Truly intrigued by this series and what’s to come.

After winning WHAT? on Goodreads I was looking forward to purchasing WHO?. Once again the story is set in Philadelphia and focuses on the fifth anniversary of the missing "August Girls"; women who have gone missing near the end of every summer. This book is an engaging thriller from start to finish.

DNF @ 7%. The writing is no good. It’s clunky, awkward, and overly descriptive to the point of being exhausting to read. Every sentence feels like it’s trying too hard to impress, drowning the reader in unnecessary detail and leaving no room for imagination.

The idea behind this book and series is much better than the execution. Structure of it didn't bother me but the writing did. Among other things, the dialog doesn't ring true
