A whirlwind romance inspired by Ferris Bueller’s Day Off about four friends whose hearts are broken and mended over the course of an epic senior skip day—from the bestselling author of The Summer of Broken Rules!

For starters, Grace is secretly in love with Everett, who used to go out with Isa before breaking her heart in the infamous Freshman Year Fracture. And, oh yeah, no one knows that Isa has been hanging out with James, Grace’s brother—and if Grace finds out, it could ruin their friendship.

With graduation fast approaching, Grace decides an unsanctioned senior skip day in Philadelphia might be just what they need to fix things. All she has to do is convince Isa to help her kidnap Everett and outmaneuver James, who’s certain his sister is up to something.

In an epic day that includes racing up the famous Rocky steps, taste-testing Philly's finest cheesesteaks, and even crashing a wedding, their secrets are bound to collide. But can their hearts withstand the wreckage?

3 friends decide to have a last hurrah before college and skip school to go on an adventure. Their other friend, also the brother of one of them, isn’t invited and wonders where they are. It is told from 4 different viewpoints about their day.

They were all very close growing up, but there is tension between all of them due to various things that have happened. Their adventure is supposed to heal their friendship.

It’s hard for me to rate this one, because I feel like I wasn’t really the target audience. While it was enjoyable, I felt this book was more meant for people in about 8th-9th grade based on the themes of the book, which is way younger than I am. 😂 I think this book will be very enjoyable for high schoolers.

I did enjoy that they all had secrets that came to light throughout their adventure and that they were able to heal from their past. There is also mention of depression and seeking help for that which I thought was good representation.

Overall, it was good, but unlike some other YA books, I felt this one wasn’t really for adults too.

Thank you to netgalley for this free advance copy in exchange for an honest review. 🩵

This book was EXACTLY what I needed for my book slump! 🙂‍↕️🙌🏼
The friendship and the romance portrayed in this book was written so well, despite the predictable ending etc I still ATE this book upp! 👏🏼

The Taylor references also had me hooked loll 🤭

This book’s timeline is the span of 24 hours, has 4 POVS, and the audio book was perfection! Which is definitely what made me keep reading!

As much as there’s a lot of miscommunication in this book it didn’t bother me all that much cause it had me intrigued the entire way through lol 👀

I definitely recommend this book for a quick easy read!

𝟑.𝟐𝟓 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧 ☆☆☆

⋆⁺₊⋆”you’re my true home, ev. you and isa and james. no matter where we move, you’re not going anywhere”

⋆⁺₊⋆𝐩 𝐥 𝐨 𝐭: highschool senior grace barbour decides to plan an impulsive day off from school with her two best friends, isa and everett, without telling her brother james. the thing is that isa and everett aren’t friends anymore ever since their breakup freshman year. they both don’t know that this day is grace’s attempt to reconcile their friendship before they all go off their separate ways to college. (basically this is a 𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐬 𝐛𝐮𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐫’𝐬 𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐨𝐟𝐟 retelling)

⋆⁺₊⋆𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞𝐝: ok so as some of you know, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐛𝐫𝐨𝐤𝐞𝐧 𝐫𝐮𝐥𝐞𝐬 is one of my all time favorite books so i was ecstatic when i got approved for this arc! (thanks again netgalley) i really liked this book overall as well! it was a really fast paced read with four different perspectives which kept it interesting, as well as the whole premise of the book. i LOVE ferris bueller, and i’m about to be a senior in high school so i feel like i am the perfect target audience for this book. i quickly fell in love with the characters, especially everett haha ♡︎ i feel like it’s uncommon to have a book with so many perspectives where they all feel different and 𝐤.𝐥. 𝐰𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 did an amazing job with that! grace and isa are our classic best friends/basically sisters duo and i love their friendship! also james and everett omg i love them both but i can’t say much without spoiling! new book bfs? another thing the author is really good at that she did in both this book and the summer of broken rules is that even tho it’s a lighthearted happy book, she adds in a deeper side to the characters,
with the backstory of everett’s dad and how this skip day connected to him. i love that.

⋆⁺₊⋆𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐍𝐎𝐓 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞: okokok so just a couple of small things. there were some parts where i got SUPER lost bc there would be flashbacks but at first i couldn’t tell they were flashbacks and then they were so long that i forgot they were flashbacks and then got all mixed up and turned around. for that, i’m
deducting a star. this second thing i can’t say cus it would spoil but basically something was super rushed and it felt weird.

⋆⁺₊⋆𝐨 𝐯 𝐞 𝐫 𝐚 𝐥 𝐥: i enjoyed this book, it just didn’t give me the 5 star feeling. i am 110% recommending this! i will definitely be buying a copy when it releases!

⋆⁺₊⋆𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝟒𝐭𝐡, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓

⋆⁺₊⋆ 𝐩𝐫𝐞-𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰: ahhh i finished it was so good! rtc soon!

⋆⁺₊⋆𝐩𝐫𝐞-𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝: i got approved for another arc! i loved the summer of broken rules, so i’m super excited to read this!

I was really excited about having another KLW book to read this year, but this was not my favorite of hers.

I have never seen Ferris Bueller so I have no idea how similar/different this was from the movie. On paper, the whole idea of ditching school and going on adventures with your friends sounds like a lot of fun, but I just didn’t get that vibe while reading this book. All of the activities they did were boring in my opinion. The entire story spans only one day which made the pacing very slow as well. There were quite a few flashbacks but the way they were weaved into the story was clunky and not very seamless. The ending was abrupt and the storylines didn’t get any sort of closure which was annoying too.

It also doesn’t help that the reason for all the drama in the book is simply miscommunication or actually a lack of communication between the characters. I just wanted them to talk and resolve things, but it doesn’t happen until the very end. The characters were also too stereotypical and they didn’t have much depth to them. This is a multi-POV book which didn’t leave enough time to really delve into each character and give them a chance to shine. They all just sort of blurred together. There are two romance storylines, but everyone already has feelings for each other and I didn’t understand why. It felt like the author just skipped over that part and it’s all about having the characters overcome certain obstacles in order to be together.

All in all, this book was fine but maybe a little bit of a letdown for me.

LOVED IT!!! K.L Walther is one of my auto buy authors!! her books are so fun and swoony and emotional, I just love all of them!! I’ve been sooo excited for this one to come out and immediately preordered the special edition🤭 and this book did nottttt disappoint! the vibe was so fun! I absolutely loveeee best friend to lovers and best friends brother, so that was great! them running all around Philly was so fun too! also getting some emotional parts was so special- with Isa starting to realize that she is allowed to be her own person with her own ideas, all of them getting with the person they truly love, Grace and James finally righting their relationship, and Everett coming clean about his dad and his issues! so good!! I loved the romance obviouslyyy! I gave it 4 stars for two main reasons: the plot and basically what happened was a little mature for the age they were lol…idk if it’s realistic for four high school seniors to skip school without their parents knowing and drive into a big city for the whole day. idk man it just doesn’t feel super realistic! also, there was a minor fade to black scene at the end that could have been a little more closed door. and I always say that the language is pretty bad lol. but overall, this was a great book with every aspect i could ask for!!

⤿ arc review ⊹ ࣪ ˖

i found this book to be rather repetitive, and i’m relieved to have finished it. the narrative lacked depth, and each character's perspective fell so flat. as for the taylor swift references—k.l. walther, please, let’s not! i appreciate a good taylor mention (in moderation, of course), it felt so awkwardly placed in that it seemed more like a marketing ploy than a natural fit.

i’ve never quite understood the sentiment until now, but this book screamed “young adult” in a way that felt more suited for a playground than a library (think 8-year-olds with crayons, not teens with angst). the writing was so juvenile and I quite literally can’t find any other word to describe the characters than cringe. I’m writing this review a little while after having read the book and let me tell you I barely remember anything because of how forgettable this book is.

anyway, thanks for indulging my second k.l. walther rant. sorry to any k.l walther fans but her books just aren’t for me (yet I keep reading them 💀)

This book is so cute! Essentially grace the fmc wants to get her friend group back together so she decides to pull a Ferris buellers day off faking sick and man the adventure that they go on and the secrets that unfold are so good! Grace Everett Isa and James are everything I wanted in a friend group add in a principal who has it out for James makes this a funny easy read. It very much gives graduation nostalgia vibes. Thank you NetGalley for the arc.

Reading this love letter to Philadelphia while IN Philadelphia was one of my very best life choices ❤️ Literally reading about teen shenanigans in Rittenhouse Square while I was lying on a bench in that exact spot? Reader’s dream come true. Oh, and the story itself! As an 80s kid, this modern, gender-swapped Ferris Bueller’s Day Off retelling is an absolute DELIGHT. I loved the romances and family / friends storylines so very much!

wow. wow. WOWWWWWWWW. GUYSSS THIS BOOOOOOOOK!!!!!!!

i actually read this entire thing today while i was travelling and it was the PERFECT plane book. there was so much going on constantly which is exactly what i need to keep me hooked while im on a plane and this book did it GREAT. there was a perfect mix of action, romance, and plot, and it was just so good i dont even know where to start.

i loved all of the characters. they all were so funny and none of them annoyed me somehow! they all had their own great things about them and they interacted so perfectly together! i really loved grace and isa's friendship and how easily they got over the secrets they were keeping from each other instead of having some stupid unnecessary fight, it was honestly so refreshing to read about good strong friendships! i also loved everett and james, they were both so funny and hot and i loved them both (but everett was my fav i have a soft spot in my heart for him). i always seem to rate a book high when it tackles one of the characters dealing with the death of a parent, because i do relate to that with my dad and it just makes me feel for the character so much.

i also LOVED the setting of this one!! last year i was 100% convinced that i wanted to go to upenn (i didnt get in and now im at tennessee and am so happy im there) but we took 2 trips to philly to see the city and tour the school so now i recognized all of the places they were going and ive been to most of the places mentioned which just made it seem really cool and relatable!!

anyways idk if you can tell but i really loved this book and im so glad i read it!!!!

‘yes, there was no doubt. there was no doubt in our minds where we belonged.’

i have really a great time for the audiobook. the narrators did a really good job, especially the voices of grace and james (isa and everett's voice too).

but as much as i enjoyed the audiobook, i will not rated the actual book because there are some issues that i felt uncomfortable reading. nonetheless, i enjoy this one.

───────────────────────

pre-listen:

it's been two years since i read a k. l. walther book (which is of course, the summer of broken rules which i really enjoyed). and now that her newest release is out, i have to listen (and read) and see if i felt the same after two years 😅🩷

3.25 stars - This was such a fun premise with a lot of heartwarming undertones, but it fell a bit flat in the end. If you've seen Ferris Bueller's Day Off you have a pretty good idea of the story line this book follows, and if you haven't seen it you're still in for a delightful adventure. It's Grace's senior year and Student President, good grades, and a college acceptance mean she's been doing little more than working hard for the last four years and she needs - no, deserves - a break. Through some good old-fashioned best friend guilt, and a totally aboveboard "kidnapping," Grace and her two best friends embark on a one last big escape before college takes them all in different directions.

The friendship and sibling dynamics in this book were absolutely the highlight for me! Grace and her brother James are everything you'd expect from a brother-sister duo who have grown apart over the years but still clearly know one another better than anyone. Then there's Isa and Elliot, Grace's two best friends who haven't really spoken in years after a disastrous breakup. The tangle of emotions these three are working through perfectly encapsulates - to me at least - what it's like being on that cusp of adulthood, wading through heartbreak, and needing your friends to be there for you.

I do feel like there was a lot going on at times, with a few moments feeling rushed, but ultimately this was an entertaining tale of friendship, family, and making memories with those you love.

Thank you to Random House Children's, Delacorte Romance, and NetGalley for the digital ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This book is based on one of my favorite movies: "Ferris Buler's Day Off", and it did not disappoint.

I absolutely loved every second of this and binged it in every free second that I had.

I loved both the romances that unfolded in this book. Sooooo cute!

I love K.L. Walther's writing style so much. Her books are always so unique and fun!!
