The Anticancer Diet: Reduce Cancer Risk Through the Foods You Eat
In this international bestseller, Dr. Khayat provides easy-to-follow and often surprising guidelines on what are now known to be the foods most likely to reduce the risk of cancer. For those of a scientific bent, he explains what cancer is and how it develops. Bringing together his own research with that of other major cancer specialists, he breaks down what the studies mean, which ones provide the most solid evidence, and how to use their results in your and your family s diet.
Structured by the major food groups as well as supplements, beverages, and exercise The Anticancer Diet may surprise you by not disparaging red meat but alerting you to find out the source of your fish and suggesting sole over salmon. While highly recommending commercial pomegranate juice, it cautions people with fair hair and eyes against drinking orange juice. What stage of life a person is at will also affect what they should consume. Pregnant women, older women, men, and children may process foods differently.
With numerous easy-to-read charts and tables along with a comprehensive food list at the back of the book, this accessible, user-friendly guide helps readers realize the power in their everyday choices."

This international bestseller was on my local library's shelf and caught my eye for obvious personal reasons. It was an interesting read, dense with data and many tables. (sometimes a little too dense) Given that he is part of the esteemed medical oncology community, I appreciated his section on evaluating studies and research that promote one thing and another as the magic bullet cure. In fact, most of these studies are usually quite flawed with serious shortcomings in terms of real evaluations and often are funded by pharmaceutical companies.
He makes his case for an anti-cancer diet and lifestyle through a compelling discussion of nutrigenomics, the scientific study of the interaction of nutrition and genes, especially with regard to the prevention or treatment of disease. His conclusions stand in stark contrast to the last author (a radiation oncologist) I read on this subject who stated diet and exercise has negligible if any impact on the incidence of cancer, and the author before that (naturopath) who claimed a vegan diet was the magic bullet cure for almost every disease. Rather he takes a much more reasoned approach, giving the reader data on the nutritional value of foods along with data on the contamination of certain foods that are a result of pollution and poor farming practices. There is a list of ten things to stay away from and ten anticancer agents to include in your diet and lifestyle. Beyond that he promotes variety in the diet and the employment of common sense when evaluating new information/studies and flashy headlines in the media.

Most of the information is out of date, and thus misleading in 2019.

At first look, most data show this book was released in 2015. However, with a little more examination of the copyright trail and a trusty ol' Google search, shows it to be originally published in France in 2010. I feel that since it had to be compiled and written over seven years ago, it is now dated.
I checked this book out at my local library. The clunky translation and odd information put me off. Try following this entry..."At lunchtime, you can eat red and white foods, which you also have with your other meals. In the evening, avoid purple foods and eat green foods."
I list this as a skip. For nutritional guidance, I am seeing what has been released in 2016-17. For day-to-day plans, I consult www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle.

I had to do a lot of skimming in this book...Just too much detail on studies for me. I should have just skipped to the end for the 5 golden rules, 10 things to do and 10 things to avoid. I felt like some of the information was dated as well. That said, it is good to be conscious of what we are putting in our bodies so this book was helpful reiterating some of that information.

I like how he summarized his advice at the end for different types of people, such as premenopausal women.

Originally published in France in 2010, The Anti-cancer Diet by Dr. David Khayat, is newly translated into English for American audiences. A well known oncologist, Khayat has created an incredible "everything you need to know" food guide to help adults from contracting cancer.
Cancer is the leading cause of mortality in adults in the world. More than 585,000 Americans die of cancer yearly. Staggering figures. Until I read this book, I knew that by not smoking, I was probably keeping myself from lung cancer, but I had really no idea what the possible effects of the foods I ate could have on my predisposition toward cancer. The book contains many charts to explain foods, ingredients, vitamins, supplements, and just about everything that goes into a person's mouth. Each food is analyzed for its possible contribution to cancer. I was pleased to see that red wine has Resveratrol, a substance that has anticancer properties.
I am always quite amazed that once you are aware of something—in this case preventing cancer—everywhere you look you find information on the topic. This morning in the Google News, there was an article from the Globe and Mail about citrus fruit consumption and skin cancer. This is something mentioned by Khayat. And then, just as i was eating a leftover piece of grilled salmon on my salad, I read that grilling may be dangerous and eating salmon is problematic. Couldn't finish my lunch!
Khayat doesn't expect for his book to be treated simply as a diet plan, and he creates no daily eating guide, like many diet books. His goal is to raise awareness and caution consumers about the foods that we eat. He also adds the kind of sane advice that we have heard many times: don't smoke, eat a varied diet; vary how you cook your food, eat products that are made by hand, are locally produced, and farmed by sustainable methods; and find your energy balance—which includes getting exercise.
The Anti-Cancer Diet is a valuable tool for people who are concerned about their health and wellbeing. It will stay on my cookbook shelf. I really appreciated receiving it from the publicist.

A life changer, quite literally. My mum got this book when she got cancer 15 years ago. Since then I have given it to 3 friends - in today's world cancer is so prevalent it didn't take long for it to be relevant. They are all still alive. Couldn't say how much the book had to do with that but they all found it very helpful, so, 1 to recommend I guess.

The author is most definitely an expert on the subject as he's been the head of the National Cancer Institute in France among other credentials. And... the book has extensive footnotes. It boils down to the 10 things you SHOULD do to avoid cancer and the 10 things you should NOT do, too. Reaffirmed some concepts and debunked some others. Nice charts show excellent, very good and average cancer fighting abilities of some food; however, the conclusion doesn't leave the reader hopeful that being mindful of your food will have any bearing on whether or not a person ends up with cancer.

For someone who has a history of cancer in her family, this book was very helpful and had a lot of interesting information. It not only made me rethink my average nutritional intake, but the early sections on cancer's why and how made me want to read more into the science of cancer and treatment. Highly recommend for anyone who needs a wake up call on their eating habits, especially in the health crisis that is cancer.

Well researched and very readable with many tables that explain what foods and supplements might help one to somewhat reduce their cancer risk through diet. Includes other ways to reduce one's risk and discusses how cancer forms and many forms of the disease. Also does a good job of explaining the various types of medical studies. A good choice for the layman.

Very well researched and very readable for a lay person, this book informs you of how to try to reduce cancer risk and improve health overall. The glossary, appendix of alphabetically listed food for cancer risk, and a handy checklist after an extensive Index, make this book very user friendly. This book is one to be kept with your cookbooks. I received a copy through the Reading Room for review.

Really liked this book, simple, clear and to the point, I liked that he explains the limitations of the studies done on the diet and its link to cancer.
