Pero allí solo hay una pensión, donde coinciden con la señorita Thompson, que trabaja como prostituta. Eso escandaliza a los Davidson, que son misioneros. En un ambiente opresivo dominado por una lluvia incesante, el señor Davidson se propondrá hacer volver al rebaño a esa oveja descarriada, sin ni imaginar que eso desencadenará un pulso entre dos caracteres totalmente opuestos.

Rain may be a short story but it is more powerful, lush and colourful than many long novels and its unexpected denouement literally shook me.
Christian conventions collide with the laws of nature… Indoctrination is opposed to reason… Self-righteousness turns out to be just a case of obscurant hypocrisy… And high ideals come to nothing but self-deception…
Fanatical convictions, even the most idealistic, are evil.

He came over to the table and stood in front of it as though it were a lectern.
‘You see, they were so naturally depraved that they couldn’t be brought to see their wickedness. We had to make sins out of what they thought were natural actions. We had to make it a sin, not only to commit adultery and to lie and thieve, but to expose their bodies, and to dance and not to come to church. I made it a sin for a girl to show her bosom and a sin for a man not to wear trousers.’

«Ο αναμάρτητος πρώτος τον λίθον βαλέτω»
Αυτή η «βροχή» ήταν η νομοτέλεια της φύσης.
Έπεφτε ασταμάτητα, για πολλές μέρες και νύχτες και κατάφερε να μουσκέψει και να ξεπλύνει ψυχές.
Κατάφερε να σβήσει και να αφανίσει όσους προσπαθούν να καταπνίξουν τη φύση τους, τις επιθυμίες τους, τις ανάγκες που πρέπει να ικανοποιούνται ως προϋπόθεση απαραίτητη για τη ζωή μας, για την ψυχική μας ισορροπία.
Αν προσπαθήσεις να καταπνίξεις τα ένστικτα και τα αρχέγονα γενητήσια θηρία των φυσικών ορμών, με οποιοδήποτε τρόπο ανθρώπινης επινόησης ένα είναι σίγουρο- τραγικά δραματική αποτυχία.
Μια υπέροχη νουβέλα με αφηγηματική πληρότητα και υποβλητικό ύφος. Τα γεγονότα παραθέτονται σε τριτοπρόσωπη αφήγηση χωρίς να εξηγούνται ή να κρίνονται.
Τίποτα σχεδόν δεν αναλύεται, εκτός απο τους χαρακτήρες των ηρώων που είναι άρτια δομημένοι, όλα τα συμπεράσματα και οι αναλύσεις αφήνονται στον αναγνώστη.
Το σκηνικό αρχίζει στα νησιά Σαμόα του Ν. Ειρηνικού. Κλίμα βαρύ, βροχερό, καταθλιπτικό και υγρό. Αποικίες των Αμερικανών.
Ένα πλοίο που κατευθύνεται στην πρωτεύουσα των νησιών, αγκυροβολεί αναγκαστικά σε κάποιο άλλο λιμάνι λόγω μιας μεταδοτικής ασθένειας που εξαπλώνεται.
Σε αυτό το νησάκι μακριά απο τον προορισμό τους είναι αναγκασμένοι
να διαμείνουν οι επιβάτες του πλοίου.
Οι ήρωες μας. Δυο ζευγάρια. Ένας γιατρός με τη σύζυγο του και ένα ζευγάρι ιεραποστόλων.
Το πέμπτο πρόσωπο της ιστορίας μας είναι και το καταλυτικό στοιχείο που γδύνει τον καθωσπρεπισμό. Μια πόρνη που διασκεδάζει τους ναύτες και σκανδαλίζει με την ειλικρίνεια της.
Τα άτομα αυτά θα βρεθούν αναγκαστικά κάτω απο την ίδια στέγη.
Και εδώ ξεκινάει η βροχή.
Μεταφορικά και πραγματικά. Η βροχή της εκδίκησης. Η ανίκητη εξουσία της φύσης που ξέρει να τιμωρεί όσους αψηφούν το νόμο της και στηρίζονται στο νόμο της επιβολής και των όπλων.
Οι ιθαγενείς έχουν τα δικά τους ήθη και έθιμα. Τις δικές τους αντοχές. Τα παραδοσιακά τους στοιχεία που χτίζουν την καθημερινότητα τους.
Έχουν κατακτηθεί απο τους λευκούς δυτικούς με βία και αδικία, ενώ συνεχώς δέχονται τιμωρίες για την ανάρμοστη και προκλητική συμπεριφορά τους στο όνομα ενός θεού τιμωρού που δεν γνωρίζουν κι όμως επιβάλλεται να υποταχθούν.
Οι σταυροφόροι ιεραπόστολοι, μισαλλόδοξοι και ρατσιστές, υποκριτές και ηθικολόγοι κατά περιπτώσεις.... θέλουν να εκχριστιανίσουν τους ιθαγενείς «σφάζοντας» στο όνομα του σταυρού.
Ως ενα σημείο το‘χουν καταφέρει. Έχουν παραβιάσει και καταπατήσει χυδαία και φθονερά τη φύση ασκώντας εξουσία και λειτουργώντας αυθαίρετα στο όνομα κάποιας εντολής που ποτέ δεν τους δόθηκε.
Το άλλο ζευγάρι σχεδόν συναινεί με τους ιεραποστόλους. Ο γιατρός διαφέρει αρκετά απο όλους και δεν δέχεται αυτή τη στρατηγική υποδούλωσης και μετάλλαξης των ιθαγενών σε ένα θρησκευτικό φανατικό δόγμα. Ωστόσο δεν μπορεί να κάνει κάτι δραστικό.
Και η βροχή συνεχίζεται.... και σκεπάζει τα πάντα.
Καταπνίγει δυο κόσμους τόσο διαφορετικούς με τη διαφορά πως οι ιθαγενείς εξουσιάζονται απο τη φύση, επομένως μπορούν με ευκολία να ζουν με αυτή την υπόγεια καταδίκη της ασταμάτητης βροχής.
Οι «σταυροφόροι» υποφέρουν, δεν αντέχουν τον καταραμένο βροχερό τόπο που τους τσακίζει τα νεύρα.
Πρέπει όμως να επιβληθούν σε έναν τόπο που δεν τους ανήκει. Οι άποικοι δεν μπορούν να προσαρμοστούν στο κλίμα, καταρρέουν ψυχολογικά μαι σωματικά.
Οι γηγενείς επιβιώνουν και ξαναγεννιούνται απο τα βρόχινα δώρα της φύσης τους.
Όταν έρχεται η σύγκρουση ανάμεσα στον ιεραπόστολο και την πόρνη αφανίζεται κάθε πλαστή ανθρώπινη βούληση κατά των παθών και της μοίρας.
Κανείς δεν μπορεί να αντιταχθεί στη φυσική του υπόσταση.
Δυο κόσμοι τόσο διαφορετικοί που τελικά αποδεικνύεται πως είναι φτιαγμένοι ακριβώς απο τα ίδια υλικά και δομημένοι τέλεια απο την ίδια συνταγή ανθρώπινης δημιουργίας.

Hypocrisy, self-conceit, mercilessness, and human weakness in the face of temptation are all expressed in this short story. The combination of those may lead to drama.
It also reflects on colonialism, its dehumanizing tendencies, and prejudices which sometimes have a dangerous effect.
Two couples - Macphails and Davidsons - arrive at Pago-Pago, an island in the Pacific Ocean. Due to quarantine, they have to spend some time here before going to another island. The travelers are not happy with this delay. To make matters worse, the rain continues without stopping in Pago-Pago.
Davidsons are missionaries who have a high opinion of themselves. They look at indigenous people as being barbaric and subject to be reformed and 'civilized.'
On the island they meet Miss Thompson whose way of life and morals seem suspicious to the missionary. Macphails, Davidsons, and the young woman rent rooms in the same house. There are few houses on the island in which foreigners can stay. Loud music and voices from her room draw their attention. Miss Thompson is intent on having fun and earning some money.
Soon the venerable missionary finds out that his suspicions are justified. After that, the young woman is at the mercy of the rigid man. He rejects compromises and wants the delinquent miss to leave the island as soon as possible. How can he forget his duty and indulge the sin? However, Davidson himself falls victim to the sinful nature of man, so to speak. There has always been something beguiling around Miss Thompson. Those who speak a lot about morality and tend to preach to others may end up being the first to betray their ideals in real life.
The image of himself with which Mr. Davidson is confronted in the end is not flattering at all. He can hardly bring himself to look in the metaphoric mirror. Descending into sin may be much easier than starting a more decent life.
Maugham imparts only some information, not giving many details about the characters and what is going on between them. The open ending leaves the reader to draw their own conclusions as to what happened to Davidson.

Words fail me. Never did I envision such an ending. Nervous breakdowns are ugly things.
The heart has its reasons, said Pascal, but when the heart has lost its reason it can be monstrous!
Nowadays drugs like Risperdal readily curb the appetite of those dogmatists, like the minister here, with violent case histories. Or at least this story calls for us to connect the dots in that way.
It works. Stops 'em dead in their tracks! A libido's lights out. Like our societal masters’ curt kiss-off works - to silence ANY “missionary grin” as Auden put it.
Read this one, folks, if you can stomach it! God, save the sexually repressed from being put to this test, when the test is faced by one's deepest and most impolite repressed wishes.
Maugham's answer to Heart of Darkness is cut like a diamond. It drew blood from my heart.
But it all holds together perfectly.
I am in awe, Mr. Maugham, of your mastery.
But Sigmund Freud would agree -
When the heart is weak and iced over with dread -
The heat of libido more readily rises!
While the incessant drumming of rain beats the tin roof of damnation.

Each of the Maugham's short stories I have read is a little masterpiece and 'Rain' is no exception. This time the author's focus of attention is this particular type of people who do terrible things in the name of God. Being ruthless, single-minded (and narrow-minded) zealots, they are cruel to those who do not easily conform, have no compassion for human weaknesses although they are not free from them themselves.
“You see, they were so naturally depraved that they couldn`t be brought to see their wickedness. We had to make sins out of what they thought were natural actions. We had to make it a sin, not only to commit adultery and to lie and thieve, but to expose their bodies, and to dance and not to come to church. I made it a sin for a girl to show her bosom and a sin for a man not to wear trousers.”
“How?” asked Dr. Macphail, not without surprise.
“I instituted fines. Obviously the only way to make people realise that an action is sinful is to punish them if they commit it. I fined them if they didn`t come to church, and I fined them if they danced. I fined them if they were improperly dressed. I had a tariff, and every sin had to be paid for either in money or work. And at last I made them understand.”
“But did they never refuse to pay?”
“How could they?” asked the missionary.
“It would be a brave man who tried to stand up against Mr. Davidson,” said his wife, tightening her lips.
Dr. Macphail looked at Davidson with troubled eyes. What he heard shocked him, but he hesitated to express his disapproval.
“You must remember that in the last resort I could expel them from their church membership.”
“Did they mind that?”
Davidson smiled a little and gently rubbed his hands.
“They couldn`t sell their copra. When the men fished they got no share of the catch. It meant something very like starvation. Yes, they minded quite a lot.”

Για τον Μομ υπάρχει μια ιδιαίτερη θέση στην καρδιά μου. Η μικρή του ιστορία, Τσάι και Ματαιδοξία, είχε πέσει στα χέρια μου, πολλά χρόνια πριν -ίσως ήμουν στο γυμνάσιο-, σε κάποιες μέρες ραστώνης καλοκαιρινής που διαβάζεις, και γενικά κάνεις πράματα που σαν να στα ψιθυρίζει η ζέστη - άρχισα να το διαβάζω μπαϊλντισμένος, δίχως προσδοκίες, σε μια περίοδο που διάβαζα αυστηρά και μόνο genre. Είνα εμβριθής και ψυχογράφος ο Μομ. Αν κι ο ίδιος διατείνεται πως γράφει μόνο για την χαρά της αφήγησης κυρίως, νομίζω μειώνει τον εαυτό του. Το πρώτο πράμα που ξεχώρισα στην γραφή του είναι η διεισδυτικότητά του στους χαρακτήρες του: καταφέρνει μέσα σε λίγες γραμμές να αποδώσει αδρά περιγράμματα και βάθος στους ήρωές του. Έτσι και σε τούτην την ιστορία, οι 5 κύριοι χαρακτήρες, περιορισμένοι σ' ένα νησί του Ειρηνικού μέχρι να λήξει μια καραντίνα, κυκλοφορούν και πράττουν σαν ολογράμματα μπροστά μου. Σα να ξεφυτρώνουν μέσα από τις σελίδες.

I would have never picked this one up except I saw a review that peaked a nerve which sometimes rears its ugly head. Those who feel a sense of entitlement own this reprehensible nerve.
A missionary couple ends up on a ship that is stranded due to weather where the husband decides he is the chosen one to save the soul of a female passenger.
The woman was just fine until meeting this devout missionary who took it upon himself to interfere with her life and decides how to save her.
This story told did the job it was written to do.

This short story is 48 pages of pure brilliance. Not one extraneous word. Maugham was considered one of the most famous short story writers of his time. I can see why after reading this story.
The story is called Rain as they are all stuck on an island waiting for the rain to abate before continuing their sea journey.
Dr. McPhail says to Mr. Davidson, the missionary:

Υπάρχει μια ορισμένη ποιότητα ανθρώπων που ποτέ μα ποτέ δεν πρέπει να τους δίνεται η παραμικρή πρόσβαση στην οποιαδήποτε μορφή εξουσίας. Όσο μικρή κι αν είναι δεν παύει να είναι μια οπή, μια ασυνέχεια, την οποία θα καταφέρουν να ξεχειλώσουν. Άνθρωποι χαμαιλέοντες θα ενδυθούν τη νομοτέλεια και την καλώς εφαρμοσμένη ηθική στις πράξεις τους, θα εκλογικεύσουν οτιδήποτε μπορεί να πάρει τη μορφή ενός λόγου, ή κανόνα ή κάποιας κατάστασης που απορρέει, θα μετατρέψουν ότι δε μπορεί να πάρει έλλογη νωπή εντολή σε μορφή συμπόνιας, κατανόησης και τιμωρίας. Είναι σαν το γλυκύτατο ζωάκι που σου λέει ποτέ μα ποτέ μην του δώσεις νερό τη νύχτα, γιατί μετά έρχεται η ώρα του γκρέμλιν.
Είναι ο άνθρωπος που δε μπορείς να κάνεις τίποτα απολύτως για να μην εμπλακεί. Θα εμπλακεί, γιατί έχει ανάγκη να ρέει διαρκώς μέσα του η αίσθηση της παντοδυναμίας. Ο φόβος των άλλων είναι η κόκα του. Λέμε πως ήρθαν έτσι οι συγκυρίες και τόσοι πολλοί βρέθηκαν να ακολουθήσουν τον ψυχοπαθή Γερμανό με το ηλίθιο μουστάκι. Γιατί την ιδέα της αναμόρφωσης ανθρώπων που δε μας πείραξαν σε τίποτα σε πολιτισμένους σκλάβους ήταν λιγότερο ψυχασθενείς μια μεγάλη μερίδα αυτών που έτρεξαν να εφαρμόσουν, να εκπαιδεύσουν, να μεταλαμπαδεύσουν και να κάνουν τον κόσμο να στενάξει, όπως στενάζουμε κι όλοι εμείς οι πολιτισμένοι με τα καλώς νοούμενα μας;
Κάλλιστα μπορώ να δω στη σκιά αυτού του βιβλίου την Καρδιά των πραγμάτων του Γκράχαμ Γκρην. Ίδια σχεδόν θεματική, ενισχύει την υποκριτική φύση πολλών ιεραποστολών –ανθρώπων που βρήκαν ένα σκοπό συγκαλυμμένης συμπόνιας, είτε έχοντας φάει κι οι ίδιοι το καλώς δοσμένο παραμυθάκι των συμφερόντων, είτε ξέροντας επακριβώς πως αναζητούσαν μια θέση στον τελευταίο προορισμό που θα μπορούσαν να την αναζητήσουν.
Το έργο αν και μια σταλιά είναι τρομερά υποβλητικό στην ατμόσφαιρα του. Δεν κρύβω ότι έχει εφιαλτική ζέστη εδώ που είμαι, η υγρασία κάνει πάρτυ όλη την ημέρα και μπήκα μέσα στο κλίμα της ιστορίας και τράβηξα σε κάποια στιγμή την κουρτίνα μου, να δω αν βρέχει.
Οι παρατηρήσεις και υπογραμμίσεις του συγγραφέα εξαιρετικά εναργείς και οι χαρακτηροδομές του γιατρού και της Σέηντι εξαιρετικές. Ο ιερέας σκοπίμως παραμένει μια ελλειπτική φιγούρα κι όμως καλοδιατυπωμένη που προκάλεσε κύματα οργής από πλευράς μου. Η γυναίκα του ιερέα είναι η ιέρεια του συντηρητισμού και η γυναίκα του γιατρού είναι η πανταχού παρούσα μετρημένη, άβουλη συντηρητική ουραγός. Για την ακρίβεια οι τρεις γυναίκες συνθέτουν την εικόνα των φάσεων της ηθικής.
Νομίζω πως η καλύτερη αποτύπωση, το καλύτερο παράδειγμα αν θέλετε είναι η δυσλειτουργική αρμονία του γιατρού με τη γυναίκα του, δυο άνθρωποι δειλοί, κρυμμένοι με αφέλεια πίσω από την επιφάνεια της δουλειάς του ως λειτούργημα, αλλά όχι ως στάση ζωής. Και αντιπαράλληλα το άλλο ζευγάρι, μιας γυναίκας δυνατής που παρέδωσε κάθε σκήπτρο δύναμης στην παράφορη εξουσιομανία του άντρα της, υπακούοντας σε κοινά κακώς νοούμενα ιδανικά, καθαρά εκλογικευμένα και ρευστά.
Αγοράζοντας το βιβλίο δεν αγοράζετε την πρωτοτυπία του, δεν έχει κάτι τέτοιο να σας δώσει. Έχει όμως να ζωντανέψει τα πάντα μπροστά σας, να περάσει κάτω απ’ το δέρμα σας και τελικά… βρε λες να βρέχει;

Θεωρούμενο ως το κορυφαίο διήγημα του Maugham, η "Βροχή" μου θύμισε τον λεγόμενο Ακαδημαϊκό κινηματογράφο. Ποιοτικό αποτέλεσμα, με προσεγμένα επιμέρους στοιχεία (φωτογραφία, κοστούμια, μουσική κ.ο.κ.), και όμως το σύνολο σου αφήνει, με την ολοκλήρωση, μια γλυκιά αίσθηση μεν, πλην όμως λειψή – σαν κάτι παραπάνω να μπορούσε να ειπωθεί που δεν ειπώθηκε και έμεινε ανεκμετάλλευτο.
Ίσως φταίει και το γεγονός πώς ο συγγραφέας έσπευσε να εξηγήσει τα πάντα, "σερβίροντάς τα στο πιάτο", διευκολύνοντας υπερβολικά τον αναγνώστη – κάπως σαν μια εύκολη κατάκτηση, μια βολική πνευματική ικανοποίηση. Το αφηγηματικό ύφος του Maugham είναι ξεκάθαρο, στρωτό, υπερβολικά βολικό και διαυγές για τα μέτρα μου. Εν τέλει, πρόκειται για ένα ποιοτικό ανάγνωσμα, λαμβάνοντας υπόψιν τις προϋποθέσεις που ανέφερα.

I have loved W.Somerset Maugham’s writing for most of my life but, somehow, have never got around to reading his most famous and successful short story, “Rain.” Actually, it is more of a novella and first appeared in 1921 in the American literary magazine, “The Smart Set,” under the title, “Miss Thompson.” There was a Miss Thompson on board a steamer, as well as a medical missionary and his wife, when Maugham and his companion, Gerald Haxton, visited Pago Pago in Somoa.
This story is set on the island of Pago Pago, where the passengers of ship are stranded ,for at least two weeks, as the crew supposed to be taking them on to Apia are in quarantine due to an outbreak of measles. Among the passengers are Dr Macphail and his wife, plus the Davidsons, who are missionaries. The couples have befriended each other and go about finding lodgings with a trader and prepare to sit out the wait. However, the trader is also persuaded to find room for a Miss Sadie Thompson and her arrival soon causes problems. Mr Davidson is puritanical and soon wishes to put a stop to Miss Thompson’s partying and male visitors, with tragic consequences.
Maugham is, sadly, a little out of fashion now, but that is a shame. It is easy to forget how hugely successful he was – both as a novelist, travel writer and in the theatre. Indeed, just this one story spawned a successful play, which ran for 608 shows in New York, as well as three films (1928, 1932 and 1953) and even an opera in 1997. He travelled widely and brings to bear his immediate knowledge of the area where he has set this story, as well as his descriptions of the characters.
Dr Macphail is the mouthpiece the author uses to show his disapproval of Davidson’s intolerant attitudes; rebuking him for being harsh in his attitude to Sadie Thompson. Meanwhile, as events play themselves out, we are always aware of the uncomfortable, sultry, humid weather and the never ending rain of the title. The island and the house the characters are staying in become more and more oppressive. This story has a shocking ending and this really does have a real impact. I am glad I read this at last and, as always when I read anything by W. Somerset Maugham, I long to read more – the real test of a great author.

“Chuva” é possivelmente um dos contos mais famosos de Somerset Maugham, e agora percebo porquê. Um dos protagonistas, o Dr. Macphail, estupefacto com a atitude intrometida e maníaca do Sr. Davidson, um missionário na Polinésia, pergunta várias vezes por que não se mete ele na sua própria vida, e é esse é realmente um dos grandes enigmas da convivência. “Chuva” aborda vários tipos de intromissão: a do colonialismo com o seu braço direito, a propagação da fé cristã…
- Instituí multas. Está claro que a única maneira de fazer com que as pessoas compreendam que uma acção é pecaminosa é puni-las quando elas a cometem. Multava os indígenas se não iam à igreja. Multava-os se dançavam. Multava-os se dançavam. Multava-os se andavam vestidos de maneira imprópria.
…a do puritanismo em vidas consideradas mais libertinas…
- Não é a mulher que dançava com o contramestre a noite passada? – perguntou a Sra. Davidson.
- Deve ser – disse a esposa do doutor… - Eu até quis saber, ontem, quem ela era. Parece-me um tanto amiga da paródia.
- O aspecto dela não é boa coisa – afirmou a missionária.
…e a dos homens a policiarem o comportamento das mulheres.
- Dr. Macphail, não digo que tenha uma opinião muito favorável ao Sr. Davidson, mas sou levado a confessar que ele está no seu direito denunciando-me o perigo que constitui a presença de uma mulher como Miss Thompson num sítio como este, onde há marinheiros aquartelados no meio de uma população de indígenas.
No final, há um combate impiedoso entre o pecado e a salvação, com um desfecho inesperado.

Διάβασα στην περίληψη για πλοίο, επιδημία και καραντίνα και λέω να εδώ είμαστε να ένα πρωτότυπο βιβλίο με ένα θέμα που δεν πρόκειται ποτέ να με απασχολήσει :p Πλάκα κάνω προφανώς η περίληψη μου δημιούργησε διαφορετικές προσδοκίες ως προς το τι θα διαβάσω με αποτέλεσμα να απογοητευτώ λιγάκι γιατί δε μου αναλύθηκε καθόλου το κομμάτι το οποίο ήθελα. Πρωταγωνιστές της νουβέλας 2 ζευγάρια τα οποία θα κληθούν να μείνουν στην ίδια οικία. Μέσα από τους ήρωες ο συγγραφέας θα καυτηριάσει την υποκρισία και την ατελείωτη ηθικολογία μεταξύ των ανθρώπων. Ποιος άλλωστε δεν το κάνει ως εύκολη λύση να κρίνει τους άλλους. Τα δύο ζευγάρια εντελώς αντίθετοι πόλοι και κόσμοι και στη μέση η βροχή που έρχεται να καλύψει αυτούς τους δύο κόσμους που συγκρούονται.
Ενδιαφέρον αλλά θεωρώ ότι μου άφησε αναπάντητα ερωτηματικά και νιώθω ότι δε μου είπε όλα οσα θα έπρεπε να ειπωθουν. Ήθελα κάτι ακόμα.

Πρέπει κάποτε να τελειώνουμε με τα ψέματα, να βγάζουμε απ’ τη μέση τους ψεύτες και υποκριτές της ενάρετης και αναμάρτητης ζωής, τους φορείς και κατηχητές της πρακτικής της σωστής πίστης στο θεό.
Το ευχαριστήθηκα αυτό το μικρό βιβλιαράκι, πρώτη μου επαφή με τον Σόμερσετ Μωμ και ανίδεη για τα μεγάλα και θαυμαστά έργα των ιεραποστολών. Κατάφερε μέσα σε λίγες σελίδες να σκιαγραφήσει ωραιότατα μερικά πρόσωπα μιας κοινωνίας και να πάρει τελικά ο καθένας αυτό που του αναλογεί.

«Non c’è niente come la responsabilità per far venire fuori quello che c’è in un uomo»
Il primo aggettivo che viene in mente pensando a Maugham è elegante. Lo conobbi con i suoi romanzi più famosi, l’ho apprezzato a pieno con i racconti. Questo libro ne contiene due di media lunghezza, entrambi incentrati sull’integralismo cattolico.
Non era la pioggerella inglese, che cade gentilmente sulla terra; era una pioggia spietata, in qualche modo terribile; ci sentivi la malignità delle forze primordiali della natura. Non cadeva, fluiva. Era un diluvio celeste, e batteva sul tetto di lamiera con un’insistenza esasperante. Sembrava animata da un’intima rabbia. E a volte ti veniva da urlare perché smettesse, e poi d’un tratto ti sentivi impotente, come se ti si fossero d’improvviso ammollite le ossa, ed eri infelice e scoraggiato.
Eh beh, parole come gocce di pioggia che battono sopra una copertura in lamiera: a folate, con impeto e armonia, tutte insieme e una alla volta. La descrizione arriva dopo che Miss Thompson ha fatto sapere al reverendo Davidson, che è disposta ad incontrarlo, a patto che non si presenti durante il suo orario di lavoro. Miss Thompson fa la prostituta, Maugham si prende gioco del fanatico moralizzatore che vuol redimerla e che non riuscendovi deciderà di renderle la vita difficile. Anche nel secondo racconto i missionari e il loro fanatismo vengono contrapposti al peccato, in questo caso impersonato da Ginger Ted, uno sfaccendato che dilapida la rendita mensile in alcool e donne. I racconti oltre che ben scritti sorprendono per i loro finali e descrivono il rapporto fra colonizzatori ed indigeni in modo chiaro, efficace e Pacifico (le colonie in cui sono ambientati si trovano proprio là, sono isole minuscole esposte alle intemperie e alle epidemie)

Si bien conocía al autor, no me había detenido a leer ninguna obra suya hasta ahora. Una vez que terminé, me agradó saber que era su cuento o historia corta mejor evaluada, porque la calidad de la misma es indiscutible.
La premisa es sencilla y clara: A partir de la parada forzosa de un barco de pasajeros en la localidad isleña de Pago Pago a causa de un brote de sarampión, un médico y su esposa se ven obligados a compartir durante días con un matrimonio de misioneros, cuyo fanatismo e intolerancia resultan apenas tolerables hasta que finalmente explotan ante la presencia de una mujer licenciosa y descarada que se hospeda en el mismo lugar que ellos y el misionero ve como obligación y desafío personales el conseguir que la mujer se arrepienta de sus pecados y se entregue a Dios y al castigo que este crea pertinente.
La escritura es sencilla, la construcción del conflicto es excelente y su desenlace incluye una profunda crítica (ya trabajada en las páginas previas) a la hipocresía de la época y de quienes hacen tan suya la supuesta palabra de Dios y el puritanismo para criticar al resto, sin ser muy distintos en esencia a ellos.
En último lugar, queda decir que la lluvia funciona como elemento natural testigo del conflicto mismo, por cuanto la lluvia inicia y se hace más fuerte conforme ocurre el enfrentamiento moral y religioso, y se detiene una vez que se resuelve.
Se suma a mi lista otra muy buena lectura de enero.

Ένας ιεραπόστολος,μια πόρνη,μια σύγκρουση διαφορετικών κόσμων κάτω απο μια ακατάπαυστη βροχή.Ποιός είναι ο νικητής,ποιος ο χαμένος και ποια είναι πραγματικά η αμαρτία;
Η πρώτη μου επαφή με τον Μωμ μου προκάλεσε πολύ έντονα συναισθήματα.Σιχαίνομαι τους φανατικούς θρησκόληπτους που θέλουν να επιβάλλουν και στους άλλους τα πιστεύω τους με το έτσι θέλω και ο Ντέηβιντσον είναι το τέλειο δείγμα ενός τέτοιου ανθρώπου."...θα τους σώσουμε έστω και δίχως τη θέλησή τους".Το ίδιο και η σύζυγός του που τόσο τον θαυμάζει για το πόσο σκληρός είναι απέναντι στην αμαρτία και τους αμαρτωλούς.Το καλό είναι οτι είναι το ίδιο σκληρός και με τον εαυτό του τελικά.
Η Βροχή είναι ένα τόσο μικρό βιβλίο,μια νουβέλα,αλλά τόσο γεμάτο και τόσο έντονο που είναι δύσκολο να αφήσει αδιάφορο τον αναγνώστη.

Ένας λιτος λογοτεχνικός θρίαμβος που δεν θεωρείται αδίκως η καλύτερη νουβέλα του. Ο Μωμ χωρίς πολλά λογοτεχνικά φτιασίδια πλέκει αργά και σταδιακά ενα δριμύ κατηγορώ ενάντια στον κλήρο, την υποκρισία που τον χαρακτηρίζει και την άκαμπτη ηθικολογία του. Επιπροσθετα ασκεί μια κοφτερή κριτική στην αποικιοκρατική επιβολή του λευκού άνδρα και εν γένη όλη η νουβέλα είναι ένας ανελέητος σαρκασμος, με υποδόριο τρόπο δε, πάνω στα πρέπει και τα μη την εποχής με δεδομένο ότι γράφτηκε το 1921. Το συγκλονιστικό λυτρωτικό φινάλε αποτελεί το ιδανικό επιστέγασμα.

Rain is a simple and short story of a group stuck in Pago Pago as the ship could not go to another port as there was a measles outbreak, which forced them to wait while a constant rain continued on causing unreasonable burdens in all aspects.
Not good enough to mingle with the first class comes Sadie! Who fits in with the Natives quite well.
The cruelest part is the self-righteousness of the Davidson's who are obnoxious characters. He believes his actions are for the good of the natives, really it is just about personal power.
Macphail does not follow along with the Davidson's thoughts and unable to stop it.
We are left with an unclear ending of a suspect.
Some words of wonder: Mother Hubbard clothing, yaws, hooch, chafing dish, and ducks to name a few.
Maugham wrote it during his trip to the South Seas. From the brief lines he jotted down on his notebook, later published in A Writer's Notebook, he constructed the story.

Readathon 2017 23/26: Μία νουβέλα
H Βροχή είναι η ιστορία 5 ατόμων εγκλωβισμένη στην περιοχή Πάγκο-Πάγκο των νήσων Σαμόα οπού την συγκεκριμένη εποχή βρέχει ακατάπαυστα.
Το ζεύγος Ντέηβιντσον (οι οποίοι είναι ιεαραπόστολοι) το ζεύγος Μακφαίηλ οπού ο σύζυγος είναι γιατρός και η Δεσποινίς Τόμσον είναι αναγκασμένοι να μείνουν στην ίδια οικία για 15 μέρες ώσπου να λήξει η καραντίνα της Ιλαράς που έχει πέσει στην Άπια η οποία είναι και ο κύριος προορισμός της παράξενης παρέας.
2.5 αστεράκια διότι δεν με έπεισαν ούτε οι χαρακτήρες αλλά και ούτε το τέλος το οποίο ήταν ασαφής...

Μια μικρή νουβέλα με μεγάλο εκτόπισμα.
Αυτό είναι η "Βροχή". Ο Μομ με την λιτή του γραφή και βασισμένος στην συγγραφική του δεινότητα, "ξεγυμνώνει" τους βασικούς του χαρακτήρες μπροστά μας και μας υπενθυμιζει πως ο καθωσπρεπισμός και η υποκρισία πάνε πάντα κόντρα στον γενότυπο μας.
"Αλίμονο απο τους ηθικούς που ειναι ηθικοί γιατί δεν μπορούν να είναι ανήθικοι και αλίμονο από τους τίμιους που είναι τίμιοι γιατι δεν μπορούν να είναι άτιμοι" όπως πολύ σωστά και ίσως πιο απλά είχε πεί κάποτε ο Αλέκος Σακελλάριος δια στόματος Παντελή Ζερβου!

Due racconti ambientati in isole esotiche, in perfetto stile Maugham. Quelle atmosfere in cui sembra che l’acqua fumi, la luce è soffusa, l’aria immobile e in alcuni casi piovosa. Su tutto la fa da padrona la sorpresa. Un ingrediente che difficilmente si trova nella scrittura dell’autore e che facilmente qui conquista.
Un missionario e una prostituta nel primo racconto e come spettatore neutrale il dottore Mcphail; un reprobo e una infermiera missionaria nel secondo, sotto gli occhi imparziali e divertiti dell’ispettore Gruyter. Racconti ben bilanciati e con un pizzico di sprint finale che li rendono un unicum nella produzione che finora ho letto dello scrittore, abituata ad una prosa immobile e piana, sua specifica caratteristica, ma non per questo elegante.

This short story is rich with not just beautiful, descriptive writing, but deep symbolism.
