For as long as she can remember, Joan Hohl has always wanted to be a writer. Her mother said Joan had her head in the clouds, always daydreaming. The only thing was, Joan's daydreams had plots!
She is a popular U.S.American writer of over 60 romance novels since 1980. She also signed her novels as Paula Roberts and Amii Lorin
3.5 stars This was a nice sweet time-travel Christmas story with no angst. The heroine is a doctor who finds the hero when he has been shot. The kicker being he has been thrust 100 years into the future. The heroine is disbelieving at first but comes to see he is being truthful. She takes him to her house, she teaches him the new world, they fall in love, marry, HEA. Of course the hero has money coz he has his gold coins. Nice sweet read.
During the month of November, I searched through my shelves for all Christmas themed novels I had. To my surprise, I found I had over 40. ( Not all were romances) So, I picked out some of the shorter ones , so I could squeeze in as many as possible between my regular reading list. This book has only 188 pages. It is a Silhouette Desire romance written by Joan Hohl and published in 1989. Although this is an older book, it wasn't all that dated, which can be the case with contemporary romances written during that time. This one had a little bit of a different plot. A man during the mid 1800's is shot in an ambush and wakes up in "present day". His doctor, Virginia, an independent woman with no desire for marriage or even an steady relationship with a man, takes an interest in Matt. Despite his having no ID and having no idea about modern technology, Virginia is drawn to him. Since he has no place to go, Virginia allows him to recover at her home. Doing a little research she finds that Matt really did live in the 1800's. They don't know what happened to cause him to skip through time. But, there is a danger of his not being able to stay. Time travel romances are hit and miss with me. This one was a little different since the guy came into the future from Ft. Worth, Texas. I don't really know why this one didn't appeal to me so much. I'm not sure if it was the time travel thing, or the age of the book, or that I just didn't feel like the chemistry was all that great. Either way, it was an OK read. Overall a C-
I normally love Christmas stories, and I tried to love this one but I just couldn't get into it. Both Virginia and Hawk are terribly one-dimensional and the plot didn't exist
My problems: * no villian (sorry, no, a bad guy from the past who shots Hawk and then is NEVER seen from again and never impacts the storyline) * Hawk and Virginia's insta-love for no reason * We are supposed to believe that an intelligent, independant doctor would invite a virtual stranger to live with her based mostly on her desire to tap that cowboy ass? * Virginia/Hawk have NO personality: she's determined to be independant yet secretly needy; he's possessive and secretly...not crazy. * No plot. The big worry is that somehow he'll get hawled back into the past for no reason without warning. Yeah. Take a minute to absorb that.
I'm sorry, this book had a lot of potential. There are many time travel romances I've honestly loved (KMM Kiss of the Highlander comes to mind); and many Silhouette Desires I've read again and again but this won't be one. Bad. Just..bad. Skip.
I'm not normally a huge fan of time-travel romance, but this one kinda worked. I think it's because it's about someone from the past ending up in the current period (although by now, it's set almost 25 years ago... I'm getting old!).
And the whole thing was dealt with kinda realistically. I loved MAtt's thoughts about everything strange he saw (he thought Virginia was a hooker because she wore make-up for instance). I liked how he gobbled up information like it was nothing, and loved simple things like shoes, because they were so much better than the ones he wore in his own time.
I also loved that one of the conflicts was their fear that Matt would be swept back to his own time. After all, if you end up in another time, what guarantee do you have that you'll stay there?
It was so charming I could even overlook the small religious overtone the book got by the ending (mostly because it seems logic that a man of his era would be religious).
