Winning Isn't Normal is a look into the ways to become better mentally trained for the sport of swimming, an attempt at teaching you skills to win more consistently. I was hesitant at first because it felt like all common knowledge. If you're motivated to train and you want to train it will make you better, as well as to consistently win you have to be different and stand out from the rest of the pack. Also it was centered around swimming, an activity I've never been any good at. As I progressed through the story, however, I became more and more interested. And by the end, I was astounded at how much I gained from the story. I've been physically active my entire life and it took reading this book to see some of the very negative habits I've had and how I can begin to redo them. I also gained vital information about how to motivate yourself to do things in general. I've always struggled to form good habits. This is fascinating to me because this book was published nearly 40 years ago. Many parts of the education system have been proven to be obsolete and I thought that goal setting and habit making were one of those things. The way that Bell described double goals that are more open-ended was completely foreign to me. And it was fresh and much less stressful than the way that I've been doing it. I honestly think I can use this book for inspiration to start a more consistent workout strategy and running strategy. This book had an instant impact on my mental state, one of the coolest parts of reading. All because I decided to pick it off a shelf randomly...
