Read after hiking in Hazel Creek and Lakeshore Trail east to Forney and Noland Creek this month to get a better understanding of the area on SW edge of Greater Smoky Mountains N.P. Interesting only if you already have some interest in the region.
I have visited the Fontana area multiple times and every time I find something new and fascinating about it. I first learned about the Fontana area while taking a ride on the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad. After that, I couldn't get enough information about the region, and so the search began for resources and led me to Holland's book on Fontana. I have read this book multiple times, and much like my experiences with the region, I find/learn something new each time I revisit it. Fontana was an extremely easy and enjoyable read, filled to the brim with incredible facts and information. The maps and photographs enhanced my reading experience each and every time. After finishing this book yet again, I am looking forward to my next visit to the region. Let the cycle of read and explore continue!
The Fontana Dam was constructed in the mid 1940's. This well written nonfiction piece provides a good history of the area from the first Inidian settlers to current day.
