Nekoda James, a former transport guard, faces a life sentence on the prison planet Syrtis. In this lawless wasteland, free of any infrastructure or oversight, everyone does what is right in his own eyes, and life expectancy is short. Food is scarce, most native species are deadly to humans, and cannibalism is rampant. At the top of the menu are former law enforcement personnel like Nekoda, and he is determined to be the first person to escape the planetary prison.

Into this netherworld, children are sometimes born, though they rarely live long. Twin sisters Mara and Serah are among the few who have managed to survive into their teenage years. But when they catch the eye of Tidal, chief of a roving band of cannibals, they must flee across the desert with their father to evade capture. In their efforts to shake Tidal's pursuit, they cross paths with the newcomer Nekoda, and their father recognizes him as the very transport guard responsible for bringing him to this place of horrors.

Revertant is an engaging story of redemption that takes you to a savage world that’s reminiscent of Mad Max. From the cutthroat characters to the dangerous creatures hidden throughout the land, there is no guarantee of anyone’s survival. That uncertainty made the story all the more exciting and suspenseful.

If you have read anything by Asher Allen in the past, you may be surprised by this story. It is much different from his previous work. It just goes to show his skill as he writes in a much different genre and style.

Raw and gritty. A brutal and heart wrenching telling of the depravity of human nature at its core. Still, there are elements of beauty, of man's courage, fortitude, and endurance against all odds. Of hope when there is nothing to hope for. Asher Allen is a writer with a skill for storytelling that is uncommon and exceptional.

Gritty, thought-provoking, gripping, and intense…If you are looking for a story to give you the warm fuzzies, Revertant is not it.

If you are looking for a story that shies away from difficult subject matters to appease those too afraid to feel discomfort...again, Revertant is not for you.

However, if you are looking for a story that stands out in stark contrast to all of the mind-numbing dreck that our society calls entertainment nowadays, Revertant is for you.

So many themes were touched upon in this narrative: love, loss, sacrifice, depravity, justice, morality...I could go on. How do we determine what is good? How do we determine what is evil? Is comparison all that matters? Simply being better than those around us? Who gets to determine what's "better"? Who gets to set the standards? "The purpose of a storyteller is not to tell you how to think, but to give you questions to think upon." ~ Brandon Sanderson. Asher Allen definitely gives plenty of questions to think upon.

Once I started Revertant, I devoured every chapter. As I quickly approached the last chapters, I began wishing I read it more slowly because I didn't want the thrill of reading it to be over. I found myself longing to savor it longer.

Revertant made me feel. I became so invested in the characters that I even sobbed as they experienced tragedy. It made me contend with heartbreak and gave a voice to feelings I didn't know how to verbalize on my own. As Jean Luc Godard said, "Sometimes reality is too complex. Stories give it form."

Revertant is so masterfully crafted, that I went back and rated the author's previous works a little lower (though I thoroughly enjoyed them too) just to show what a standout Revertant is. I would give Revertant more than 5 stars if I could.
