What is an adverb? It's hard to explain but easy to show―and that's just what this book does, in rhyming, comical verse that will have readers giggling as they learn. Cartoon cats guide readers through the tricks of describing when, how, where, how often, and how much in this lighthearted celebration of language.
I will caveat that this book wasn't exactly what I thought it was. I am currently reading any and all books I can get on the technical aspect of writing. I thought I'd try a book aimed at a lower level as some of the adult books I've read have assumed a high level of knowledge already and as I'm trying to pick up those things I've forgotten it isn't always useful.
However this book is aimed at very young children just learning what an adverb is, it's fun, colourful and probably useful.
I read it with a rather sing-song rhyming format in my head and so it felt like an educational Dr. Suess book, the problem for me was that much like one of those books sometimes the context is lost as you speed through the rhymes. This probably wouldn't be an issue for the age it is aimed at.
As with all the others in this series, I got these to share with my children as a fun and cute way to discuss language and have not been disappointed. They are cute and engaging for kids.
We really enjoy Brian P. Cleary's books. He makes learning fun, and this is a silly and humorous rhyming book about adverbs. His books really entertain children while teaching them basic concepts; our girls really like them. The illustrations by Brian Gable are cartoony and cute, too - we love the cats.
We've read several of the books in the Words are CATegorical series and we've really enjoyed them. We will certainly look for more books by this author/illustrator team at our local library.
My son is just wild for the Brian Cleary CATegorical books. I personally don't care for the illustrations, but he finds the drawings hilarious and loves the rhymes. He gravitates to the shelf and keeps checking them out this summer. So it's 5 stars for his review, and 4 stars for me.
