I should never have agreed to babysit the NHL's hottest playboy. Or move into his house. Or fake date him, for puck's sake.
Luke Smith only takes one thing in life seriously. Hockey. He thinks every problem can be solved with a grin. And those big brown puppy-dog eyes? His get-out-of-jail-free card.
But not this last time… and now it's my job to fix his reputation before he gets traded.
To keep the puck bunnies away, I agree to fake date him.
A complete puck-up.
Because when we're alone, late at night, and his lips brush against my ear, he's got me breaking all my rules.
He's heaven between the sheets so walking away is hard. Then cue those puppy-dog eyes and I'm coming right back for more.
And now there's so much more at play than just us…
Because this little blue stick has two pink lines.
The Fake Play is a steamy, fake dating, opposites attract, forced proximity, surprise baby, pro hockey romance. It's the second book in the Pucking Daddies series and can be read as a standalone. HEA guaranteed!
This book has me shaking my head. First Keke is introduced as some sort of cockup. Running through jobs and then suddenly she’s this amazing fixer who can plan a charity auction?
Let’s talk about this auction…it’s to rehab Luke’s image but she encourages him to strip on stage and then throws him to his “dates”. Yet also gets pissed about it? None of it makes sense.
Keke waxes poetic about how much she loves Atlanta and never wants to leave but we never see a single friend of hers? She sits alone in hockey bars reading. Her backstory feels flimsy and vague. We have no idea how old she is…we get one mention that her ex’s frat protested outside her brother’s restaurant. So recent grad maybe?
I’m mostly fine with the himbo qualities of Luke. But only thinnest veneer of hockey is present in this book.
This is the second book in this impressive series and this is Luke and Keke’s story. Luke is a renowned NHL playboy, and Keke is PR specialist, who is tasked with saving his reputation, even is it means living with him and keeping him on a tight leash. This is a well written easy to read story, which has family, friendships, emotions, opposites attract, challenges, fake dating, tension, humor, witty banter, romance, palpable chemistry, and love, which leads to an entertaining, spicy, and fun addictive page turner. This is the first book I've read from Mia Mara, and I enjoyed it. Mia's characters are well-rounded and interesting. I would have been happy to keep reading just to learn more about them. With the exception of a few places I think could have used some polishing, this was a good time! I will definitely be putting more of her books on my TBR.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Quite literally the worst book I’ve ever read and I read over 100 books a year. I ALWAYS finish books and I could not finish this one. I wondered multiple times if AI wrote this book but then I decided AI would’ve done a better job.
DNF - I wasn’t a big fan of the first book but wanted to give this one a try because it’s one of my favorite tropes. However, like the first book, it still felt very chaotic and jumpy so I didn’t feel very connected to the characters. The FMC again was chaotic and impulsive and would self sabotage which is icky for me. A lot of her actions also seemed so counter intuitive to the fact that she works in PR?? Decided to just stop the series here.
This was so strange and chaotic I don’t even know where to start.
So Luke needs help fixing his player image, he talks about how he’s dated heaps of girls and he’s seen as a bit of manwhore, so what does Keke do? She’s sleeps with him, WITHOUT PROTECTION. Like I knew this was a surprise pregnancy trope (which I secretly love) but cmon girl 😭
Luke also has a man bun and semi blue hair which is personally not my thing.
Then to help fix Luke’s player image they decide to auction off the players for a fundraiser. Seems simple enough. But Keke then encourages Luke to strip and flirt with all the women while he’s on the stage (while they are also fake dating). During this auction she finds out she’s pregnant with his baby so obviously she decides to announce it TO EVERYONE WHILE SHES ON STAGE. Yes I slammed my kindle shut during this.
We also learn literally nothing about Keke. Like I couldn’t tell you her age, her last name, nada. She’s introduced reading a book at a bar, why? Idk, we never learn why she doesn’t just read at home.
The other thing I could not handle was how they named their baby. So Keke gives birth and they haven’t talked about names much and don’t know what to call the baby. SO THEY ASK A NURSE WHAT THEY SHOULD CALL HIM. AND THEN PROCEED TO NAME HIM THAT? Like cmon.
I however did give this 2 stars instead of 1, since I was able to finish it, and was interested in certain parts.

Keke gets her last chance at a PR gig from her brother, Michael. She is to live with a hockey player named Luke who keeps causing drama for the team. The two meet at a bar prior to her employment. Great meet-cute. The author does a good job of building the characters and the story. Luke gets a new teammate who is gunning for his place on the team. Luke is also in danger of being traded due to his reputation. Keke sets up a bachelor auction to showcase Luke's non-profit support of an animal shelter. This was neat idea and brought out more competitiveness between Luke and the new guy, Lucas. But the behavior at the auctions seemed over the top and unrealistic. It is at the auction where Luke finds out about Keke's pregnancy. I really loved the part where Whitney, the teams' PR manager compares Luke to Joey. Watch for that part. Also the conversation with Keke's Aunt Tessa is fantastic! The story has a lot of drama, a decent amount of steaminess, and great character development. It is an enjoyable read.

I absolutely loved this book! The tension, the banter, and the fiery connection between the leads had me hooked from the very first page. These two are so hot together — their chemistry is off the charts, and every interaction sizzled with intensity. It was impossible not to root for them because they are so clearly meant to be.
There's just something irresistible about a bad boy who falls hard and fast, and this story delivers that trope perfectly. Watching him soften and open up while still maintaining his edge was so satisfying!
My only wish? I would have loved more fake dating scenes! That trope is one of my favorites, and I feel like there was so much potential for more of those moments. Also… are we ever going to find out if they won the finals? The story left me hanging on that front, and I need answers! There was only mention of them moving forward, right? No championship games?
Overall, this was such a fun, steamy, and addictive read. I'd love to see more of these characters and their world!
I loved this story about two damaged but very different personalities that come together. Keke and Luke have an interesting dynamic. The hey are very attracted to each other in different ways. She thinks he is a player and he thinks she is a challenge because she is a thinker. This becomes their love story. It has a different approach but it works. He is a hockey player who has a bad reputation. She is a PR fixer. He comes up with the idea for them to be in a fake relationship so he can repair his reputation and save his job. It has some interesting twist in the plot but it does have a happy ending. I enjoyed reading their story. Not only that but her brother Micheal is a great character. I loved Whitney as well she is a force of nature and becomes a sister from another mister to Keke. I would give this story more than 5 stars if possible.

He has always been the player, the fun guy, but even he knows it is wearing thin. He tries to pick up the girl with her nose in book at the bar on a bet from his friends, but she is not having it. She has no interests in jocks with big egos and turns him down. The next day her brother has a job for her, reinventing one of the player's image, and it turns out to be none other than the player from the night before. Now she has to live in close quarters with him and save him from himself. Despite her resolve to keep things professional, they have strong chemistry and they soon end up in closer quarters than expected. The character development is pretty good, you get a strong sense of who each of them are including their vulnerabilities. They navigate their way through their challenging circumstances and find their happily ever after in the end. A cute story, with a little spice and some bedroom eyes.

Luke, a talented hockey player, is known for his playboy reputation. He’s dangerously close in being traded to another team unless he smartens up. Keke, is hired to clean up Luke’s reputation so that he’s not affecting his hockey team. Being in close proximity to each other is challenging but to fool the paparazzi, they pretend they are dating. Luke’s all in to making this into a forever partnership as they do have a strong connection but she’s holding back from what’s happened in her past. Can Luke become the better man & convince Keke that he won’t leave her after her job is completed with him?
A really good book to read with Keke releasing her insecurities about romance & love based on her past life. Luke’s close call opens her eyes & losing him is not what she wants to happen.
I received an ARC of this book via through Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Luke needs an image change and quick! Keke is hired to do that but things change along the way.
I really hate to leave a 1 star review but that one star is for Luke. If I could rate it less, I would. The first encounter was awkward. Keke (not a great name btw or Kenneth) was basically on her last chance for work because she is useless. “Whipping men into shape is a specialty of mine.” She says. Inserts eye roll. You couldn’t whip cream!
She then goes to catch feelings, sleep with him, give him bad advice about team mates. The icing on the cake, she is supposed to clean up his image, she arranges a charity event where he basically gyrates through being auctioned off. She then announces, bang smack in the middle of it, that she is pregnant and runs off. She acts like a spoilt teenager. Luke is quite caring and I liked him but he needed to step up a bit, I felt he was walked over. I read another book in this series but I don’t think I would read more from the author
Loved Keke and Luke’s story. He’s a playboy always looking for a good time, but it’s starting to cause issues with the team and he needs an image improvement and that is where Keke comes in. The first time these two meet she has no idea who he is and wants no part of what he’s up to. Luke tries his best to get her number but fails. Keke never thought she’d see him again that is until her new job was to fix a playboys image who turned out to be the guy at the bar propositioning her. Luke has this way with people, he’s charming, sweet and sexy, but also competitive and won’t back down from a challenge. These two will have to figure out how to get along and keep their hands to themselves which will be easier said then done. Great read, liking this series. I found this book on BoonSproit.
I don’t understand why people like this book. The pacing was crazy, the MMC at one point is described as “dim,” and the FMC immediately has sex with him despite warnings against doing so that her career would be over. Like, no buildup whatsoever of them developing a friendship, learning each other, extended forced proximity, etc. There’s some nonsense rivalry that has to be dealt with, and for a “fixer,” the FMC is incredibly fragile and unable to hold up to the tiniest bit of stress. Also, for a hockey romance, there is like zero hockey lol. Not that I need descriptions of hockey games (matches?) to enjoy a hockey romance, but it was very clear that this was a hockey romance in only the most peripheral way. There’s not even the normally ubiquitous “she’s wearing my jersey, lemme rip it off her” moment that’s pretty standard for the genre.
Luke is the hockey player who just likes to have fun - dates, drinks and sometimes things go wrong and his face is all over the news. Management wants it to stop and they have got a person to keep him in line. KeKe is public relations and she is going to see that Luke tows the line. The one thing nobody was expecting was that they were going to have to live together! This is going to be a disaster! But oh so much fun to watch. Luke and KeKe will encounter moments of craziness, wild chemistry, passion. But there are moments of tenderness, warmth and love. This story is entertaining and a struggle for both the characters; who have things in their past that hold them back. It’s a great story. I loved it!.

I absolutely adored Seb in Spicy Play but Luke has 100% upped the ante. The way he wants to change for his girl and be a better guy is so swoony. I love how he was patient with Keke throughout the book. There is not one single thing about this book that I didn't love. It has spice and swoon worthy moments. If your jam is sexy hockey players reforming and surprise baby tropes then this story is definitely for you!
Now, I have to know is Lucas getting a story? I want to see a lady bring his cocky little self to his knees. Also, can we take a minute to talk about that plot twist. The ending was absolutely NOT what I expected but I think it’s for the best.
This book has several of my favourite troupes (fake/fake to real relationship, hockey romance, opposites attract and a surprise baby) and I loved reading this book! The spicy scenes were smoking hot and I never felt like it needed more.
I loved watching Keke and Luke do everything they can to resist each other but when you have that kind of chemistry there’s no holding back. The whole working for the same team and forbidden relationship and all the drama (but not too much drama) kept me flipping pages excited to see what’ll happen next. I found this is an awesome book and hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
What an awesome story. Goodness I love hockey! So when hockey and romance go together in a story you know it will be amazing. I enjoyed how the author switched the characters point of view at each chapter. Luke and KeKe’s story was so much fun, sassiness, hot romance, and teamwork. Luke never gave up on showing KeKe that she is loved and it’s good to let someone help you. KeKe was focused and dedicated to making sure Luke turned his life choices around to be a better hockey player. It’s so sweet how they thought having a fake relationship will keep the media happy, but what it brought them was a deeper relationship that both were not expecting. Such a romantic sports story! I enjoyed every chapter. The story just flowed smoothly. I recommend this book to all romance readers out there.
A great hockey romance between two very unlikely people. Keke first meets Luke in a bar when he tries to pick her up, she tells him her real name, Kenneth, knowing he won't believe her. Luke is the bad boy of the hockey team and gets a surprise when he finds out Keke is going to be his live-in reputation fixer. Their HEA is full of resolving past hurts, PR havoc, entertaining events and admitting their love for each other. This is a must-read.

Keke and Luke's first meeting does not go well. Keke is setting at a bar with her head in a book. While Luke's friends bet him he cant get her to kiss him. Well after Keke throws a glass of water over him, he just responds with a big grin. Luke is the bad boy of the hockey tea, who finds he needs his reputation needing fixing. Guess is his live in fixer the woman from the bar Keke. Not only does the two of them find their chemistry is off the charts, but heal each other.

Cat’s Stats MMC/FMC- Luke and Keke Genre- Sports Romance (Hockey) Length- novel Heat- they do the things and I’d give it 4 volcanoes. Series? Y Safety? Y Triggers- sex, on-ice violence, language Tropes- Fake Relationship, Workplace Romance, Meet Not So Cute, Enemies to Lovers, Surprise Pregnancy, Reformed Man Ho-Ho-Ho. Mewsings I think that this is a fun story with a good blend of the different tropes. The characters are interesting and relatable.

I like it more than the first luke was a charming and play full character and in this was SO sweet, charming, mischivous . He is lately bring a Lot o problem for the team so they hired a Nanny for him .. enter keke the party girl who was just burn and tired of man ... They got amazing chemistry and they Clash and a baby is born .. kidding well kinda 🤣 there is a Lot for me unsolved issues that magically fixed like her Bad experience with man and him taking everything with a fun aproach , i Will love to SEE more of the friendship with Sebastián and the others but was ok
Relatable characters the young rookie antagonist going through anger and angst is raw. The main characters love is refreshing. The main Luke reminds me of my husband playboy wild child past but instantly knew his partner no questions. He accepted responsibility and even enjoyed the prospect of unexpected fatherhood no major shock just okay I love her I'll take care of her, even if she doesn't want me to yet. I can relate to Keke's independence even if it plays havoc on her life. Luke is patient with her but not a pushover.
This is the first Mia Mara book I have read. I am excited for more. Keke is a PR specialist. She has had a bit of a run of bad luck. Luke is a playboy/bad boy professional ice hockey player. Tropes: Ice hockey, sports, off-limits, surprise pregnancy, opposites attract, fake relationship, HEA romance.
A huge thank you to Mia Mara and Booksprout for providing me with an eARC book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This romance book by Mia is toe curling yumminess and OMG ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. I had this book read in just a few days all because of Keke and Luke. I found myself smiling at how the book ended when Keke was delivering their baby. That part seemed pretty realistic. So when I tell you that you must have this book and start reading it today I am definitely not kidding. You’re going to want to be reading ALL of Mia’s books after you devour this one. Just my honest opinion.
If you like hockey themed romances, you’ll love Luke and Keke’s story. This is the second book in the Pucking Daddies Series by Mia Mara and a great addition to the series. This book was wonderful and once I started reading it, I couldn’t put it down. The characters were likable and well developed. It won’t take you long to start pulling for Keke and Luke. A happy ending and no cliffhanger. I received a free advance copy via the author and voluntarily chose to write a review.
Sweet story of Keke and Luke. Keke is a PR Fixer challenged to repair the playboy image of Atlanta hockey star Luke. As their “fake” relationship grows they come to realize that even though they come from polar opposite family backgrounds they can make it work. His parents are Hollywood Royalty and hers are totally out of the picture. Loved how her brother Michael and her boss Whitney come to their aid, and you see the beginning of the next book in the series.
Just okay. The concept is a good trope and in theory one I usually like. The characters were fine but I feel like this was an instant love story with not much character built into it. The second half of the book, you get more back story and some understanding of Keke. The epilogue is where her “big past” comes out and it’s only like a paragraph. Since she referenced it so much in the beginning, I expected more. Easy read, but not the greatest.
