Ghost Cupid #2

No Bones About It

Rate this book
So far, my first demon hunting mission with Zhen has gone

1) We came in for one job. It was not one job. And all of our nice, conventional weapons aren’t working. (Zhen is right, EFTs suck)

2) A crash course in Monacan legends and medicine. (Probably the best part of this trip.)

3) The bond plays a painful game of yo-yo with us. (Which means I’m getting dragged into fights I’d rather skip.)

4) Houdou are maybe addicted to peanut butter. (How was I to know?!)

If this is how all of Zhen’s cases go, we need to solve the bond issue stat, ’cause me and bullets do not mix well.

Magically bonded, chosen family, Kris and Zhen actually communicate, whole story is just mindless violence and fluff, Zhen is a walking green flag, Chinese mythology, Monacan mythology, multicultural romance, part time soulmates, full time problem, relationship negotiations, it’s a hot mess but they’re trying dammit, Evil Flying things NOT for the win, Dead Eye Kris, Zhen is turned on by Kris shooting, emotional realizations are never fun, Zhen rides a Huodou, this is a match made in heh Hell, archery for the win, only a barn was harmed in the making of this story, Kris might have sicced the Houdou on her sister’s fiance, but to be fair he had it coming

I loved this book just as much as book one.
This couple feels like such a comfort couple to me…
Something about them and their chemistry is just so sweet and soothing. They are both huge green flags.

There’s no bones about it, you cannot go wrong with this author.

You absolutely cannot go wrong with anything written by this author (with any of her 500 pen names lol). Every book of hers I’ve read has been a delight, and I literally laughed until I cried while reading “No Bones About It”. The characters are realistic and multi dimensional, the humor is on point. And the caring way the author researched, and then portrayed, myths and legends from cultures outside of her own is worthy of a standing ovation. Fantastic work as always.

While the cover was much better in this sequel than the 1st book, it didn’t flow super well.

Have you ever been in an argument with someon, and they're trying to prove a point, but they don't really have one, so they talk in circles, trying to distract you from the fact that they don't have one.
That is this book.

Book one, murder of a woman who was to be a ghost bride was the book's focus, with a side focus of matchmaking for dead people. This book, it was harder to pin down and I think it lost focus.

For the first time in reading any of this authors books under this pen name or another pen name, I found myself scrolling and becoming bored.

It honestly felt like the book was written by a completely different author. Gone, were the funny in head quips that is typical if this author, and in its place is this seriousness. With Kris being the adult and Zhen being the immature man-child.
That didn't quite fit either character, as we've come to know them from book one.

The bond appeared in book one and was a bone of contention, but almost felt like an afterthought. In this book, it became a focus because the characters were trying to figure out how to do things when the bond kept demanding they be close, we hear a little from the grandmother and the dad, but their characters become afterthoughts. We hear more from Charlotte, and the nonsense that's involved in her life, which again just felt out of left field like it didn't quite Tie into the book, it tied into the history. Yes, but was ridiculous in its own sense and I felt like that entire sequence could have been summed up with Charlotte, realizing her own strength, moving out, showing up and asking for Kris's help, rather than the way it unfolded. Which seemed very convoluted.

The bond was so much of a focus, and how does it wrap up? in three sentences in the epilogue! I almost rolled off the sofa laughing ...not in a funny way. We find out who did it and why they did it? But even with it being such a bone of contention and being so stressful throughout the entire book, and, in the end of the last book, there's nothing done about it. It's more, "Do you know how much stress that gave us?" And that's it. Are you kidding?

Typically, with this author a majority of her books that I've read in another Pen name, the title is the theme that carries throughout the book. This is the case in book 1, but not in this book. no bones about it, and I expected what I'm used to and instead got
The bones part of the book was over in 2 chapters.

It felt like the author was just throwing things in the book, trying to distract me from the fact that the book had no substance to it.

Don't get me started on the fact that the description was even more lacking in this book, then in book one. In book one I ended the book knowing nothing about the characters. Yeah, I had history about them but you know, when you picture a character in your head based on the description you're given of that character? that was all blank.

When it came to the description of the characters, I almost felt like the author was running scared in trying not to offend people or trying to get the reader to develop their own ideas. But that vagueness was detrimental to the story, especially when it camevto the monsters. For example, the spirit Wolf.
I know he was big, and he was a Wolf. We note some creatures were the size of a bus, but that doesn't quite give a full description. We know the flying creature can take on the human shape of an old person. Describe the old person. And that otherwise they look like a ginormous raven. Yes, I know what a raven looks like, but suppose I was one of those people that didn't? Who wants to go searching the internet just to find a picture of a raven so you can picture it in your mind's eye while reading a book?

I gave book 1 a 4 star rating I initially was going to give this book a 3 star rating based on my loyalty to the author what truthfully I can't in good faith because it's not the author it's the book that I'm giving the rating to. Because of how this book is written, there's no excitement about what book three entails, or a desire to read it.

This was such an easy, breezy read. Lots of fun with a nice mix of relationship issues, monster madness and new friends being made. I love the huodou, how protective they are, as well as how helpful they can be. The major issue in this one was, of course, the bond. It was driving poor Kris and Zhen crazy as they tried to figure out what, exactly, affects it. I was happy to see we get an answer as to why they were bonded out of nowhere, but I won't spoil!

Man, Kris is resilient! She has to go on monster hunts thanks to the bond and, while she's terrified and absolutely hates it, she handles it better than the majority of people would if in her shoes. And, I liked the new monsters being introduced. With paranormal books, you so often get ghosts, witches, vampires, werewolves, were-animals and not much else. Well, a few, but it's a rarity....at least in my reading. Maybe I need to broaden my horizons? Oh, I digress. But, I'd never see a mention of the huodou (aside from book one in this series), the Raven Mocker, and the Mist Wolf. I like learning about different mythological creatures from a variety of cultures, so this was nice.

I'll keep going with this, as it's so fun to read, and it's such a quick read! I recommend if you're looking for paranormal, sweet with a bit of sexy thrown in, funny, absurd, insane, but so darn cute!

What Are You Made Of

GhostCupid2

Kris and Zhen are still coming to grips with the soul tie that bonds them together for life. Not knowing how it happened, and not knowing how to break it - though everyone who can see it is disturbed by it - they have decided to get on with it.

The challenge is that Kris is not sporty, at all. And, she is comfortable with that. But the soul bond won’t let them separate physically or emotionally, so Kris is accompanying Zhen on his demon slaying runs, and having to wing it.

Zhen is only called out for dire situations, and both he and Kris are protective of innocents. But with the bond making them stay in close proximity, Kris is facing more situations than she has skills for. And the bond is making her less mundane all the time, as she gets more comfortable with her new supernatural life.

It’s a steep learning curve, for both of them. Luckily, the people they’re interacting with can offer advice and support that is making a difference. And Zhen doesn’t shirk the emotional work of the relationship, so they meet each other in the middle, with openness and honesty.

It works.

I really loved the first book, so I was really excited to read this one. Unfortunately it didn't live up to my expectations. Don't get me wrong, it's a good book. Entertaining enough to finish it but the first book was way better. I love the characters of Kris and Zhen. I think they have such great chemistry. They're funny, strong, and they communicate with each other beautifully. Secondary characters were very likeable and interesting. The first half of the book was so good. But I got a bit bored during the second half of it. I found myself struggling to finish it. The plot of this one didn't resonate as much as the first one did. And the ending fell flat and left me disappointed. I'll still read the next book in this series though. I love the characters too much.

I totally should have skimmed the first book just as a heads up because it just continues from there.

I wasn't lost per say but a little crash course would have helped because it's been a while.

This was an enjoyable read where Kris and Zhen are still finding their footing with each other. We encounter more mythology and I really like that. I absolutely love the huoduo!!! I forgot how awesome they were.

Hope there's more adventures and the author alluded that there would be! :)

I simply love this series. The time taken to read the book is no reflection on it. I bought it direct from the author and downloaded it to my Book Funnel app. It decided to play up when I had to download something else part way through reading this. Finally it came back on line and I got to finish my book. It was a wonderful adventure or should I say series of misadventures. I chuckled all the way through it. Bring on the next one I want more; I’m hooked. Kris and Zhen rock.

I love Kris and Zhen so much! This story creeped me out a bit more than the other one mainly because of the inclusion of the indigenous myths of the Appalachians. I am Appalachian born and bred so I enjoyed this very much. These two are still trying to learn how to work with their bond and do both of their jobs. The houdou are also very awesome! This story was very enjoyable and I can’t wait to see where their adventures take them in the future!

Now I know

Yet another series I am completely hooked on. I cannot believe this, and now I have to wait for the next book to come out because characters are highly addictive. And I’m mad at the author for not having more. By the way, if you’re wondering about the bond between the two characters, yes, those who had caused the mischief are revealed in this story. I won’t say who, you’ll just have to read to find out.

Once again Allie Brahms has written a story I immediately fell in love with! It's the perfect follow up to Tie Me Knot. There's Kris and Zhen's addictive dynamic with Kris is doing her absolute best to adapt to Zhen's wild lifestyle, more of the humour, magic and action that was set up so well in the previous book and extra depth given to secondary characters from time spent with them in this book. This is one of the best series I've come across and I am desperate for more!

Fun and amusing second book in the series

This is a quick and humorous read. There’s quite a bit of sass along with some scary monsters to fight. And Kris and Zhan continue us adjusting to their bond which continues to present problems.

This is a fun series and I look forward to the next book. It’s a light and fluffy read (if you don’t mind monsters looking to kill!) so it made a nice palate cleanser after a more angst filled book.

Oops! Up all night

I started reading this way too close to my bedtime. My alarm goes off in 4 hours. But I couldn't stop reading. The story just drew me in. Zhen and Kris are couple goals (without the monster fighting) I'm already jonesing for the next installment of this series

I am looking forward to reading more from Allie Brahms. I usually wait until the entire series is complete and then binge read but with Honor and Allie, I am reading each book as it gets released.

The H and h really are awesome. Reading this book is like watching a good MCU(not the post Endgame ones) movie. There is action, romance, relatable characters and most importantly humor.

So good! An excellent second part to this series, I might be a little bias as this is one of my favourite authors but still it is amazing, once I picked it up to read I couldn't put it down, the characters are growing nicely there is no jarring between books and I am loving how the group of characters are growing love it, will be rereading would recommend!

Anyone who has read book 1 to this series understands that Zhen in a cast is a doctor's worst nightmare. Without the cast.... I never would have considered crossing the Energizer Bunny with a underwear model crossed with a comedian and a monster hunter. This author did - and made Zhen work as a character. What that says about the kind of mind this author has ......

Rom Com + Supernatural Action

It is an easy read that will bring a smile to your face. The main characters make you wish you could be their friends or neighbors because you know the fun would never stop.
If you like witty banter with a side of supernatural action, choose this book!
It is a good sequel.

It just didn't hold my interest. I skipped to the end to see if it explained how they got tied together. It was a well meaning ghost that didn't understand what they were doing. Like, how could they know what to do (very complicated) without knowing that you shouldn't do it to living people?

An excellent sequel

This was a great follow on to the first book. There was plenty of action but also a lot of humor and cuteness to go around. The characters are likable and relatable. I can't wait to see more with these characters.

Another good read. Okay so maybe I didn’t enjoy this quite as much as the previous one (although the cover is much better). But I love the characters particularly the huodou who steel every scene they’re in.
Looking forward to the next one…

As Always, a Pleasure

All around great and engaging author, I’ve found very few books by this author, in all her different guise, Thant I didn’t enjoy; this book was not different. As short and corky as it was it was as enjoyable as other reads, so pick up your today. ;)

I always enjoy books by this author, whether they're under this pen name or one of the others and this book was another enjoyable read. Love the funny banter between the characters and learning about different legendary creatures from different cultures.

best sequel!

I really hope this author continues the series as these characters are a super fun read. This second book is light, upbeat, and full mysteries to uncover- my favorites! The legendary creatures from multiple continents lends a beautiful complexity to the storytelling.

Love this Series!!

I love the two lead characters! The chemistry and bond between them are so natural and fresh. I love the mix-up (or mashup) of mythological creatures, monsters, and legends. A fun read! Can't wait for the next one in the series!

I took my time reading this because I wanted to savour it and enjoy the story, instead of devouring it. I can say it was totally worth the read love the Chinese hellhounds and cannot wait for more shenanigans. Highly recommend.

really liked it

I really liked this book. 4 star for rating, 1.5 for spice. Seeing them work together with friends and new acquaintances was interesting. And Kris gains confidence being out in the field with her crazy husband.

Love it

Love these 2 books. MC's are great. Great story line and backgrounds. Things all make sense. Don't understand why Boss doesn't have cataract surgery though. It's only 15 min. per eye?

This was like a completely different vibe. Although the switching POV was insightful I am not a fan. Missed Kris's internal voice. Missed the slow pace, the learning and growing. Storyline was awesome but the whole book felt rushed.
